    Abia: PDP’s Ikpeazu wins

The Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] candidate in the April governorship
election in Abia state, Dr. Victor Okezie Ikpeazu has been declared
winner of the election after the supplementary election in the state.

Ikpeazu polled a total of 264,713 votes to beat his closest contender
of the All Progressives Grand Alliance [APGA] Dr. Alex Otti who scored
    180,882 votes to come second.

The PDP candidate scored 16,254 votes in the supplementary elections
while his counterpart in APGA, Dr. Otti secured 15,476 votes.

The returning officer for the election in the state, Professor
Benjamin Ozumba declared Dr. Ikpeazu winner by 5.00 am Sunday having
collated results from the areas where supplementary elections were
    held across the state.

Prof Ozumba had earlier on the 13th of April declared the result of
the election held on the 11th April inconclusive following the high
number people who were disenfranchised during the main election.

At the April 11 main election, Ikpeazu of PDP polled 248, 459 votes
while Otti of APGA polled 165, 406 votes.

The supplementary election was held in some units in nine local
government areas of the state and accreditation started on time though
low turnout of voters. The exercise was largely peaceful.

  • Ex-senate president, others woo Abia voters for Ikpeazu

Ex-senate president, others woo Abia voters for Ikpeazu

Chief Adolphus Wabara, Nigeria’s Fourth Republican Senate President and other political stakeholders in Old Aba Division have called on Abia indigenes and residents to vote for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and other PDP candidates on Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly polls.

Wabara in a press conference held at the Aba Town Hall called on both Abians and its inhabitants to see the project of making Ikpeazu the governor of the state as a collective venture than a personal thing if they must achieve their ambition of adopting Ikpeazu as their sole candidate.

The former Senate President who described politics as dynamic said that making any other person the governor of the state apart from the PDP gubernatorial flag bearer would be a wasteful venture and counter-productive for the state.

He called on Abians to come out en mass and vote massively on Saturday, April 11 governorship and House of Assembly elections and vote massively for the PDP candidates.

Earlier in his speech, the leader of Old Aba Division, Elder Emmanuel Adaelu said that they have consulted other senatorial districts of Abia Central and Abia North who also affirmed their support for the candidature of Dr. Ikpeazu, adding that they would consider it a serious disservice to “this land, if any person or group decides to work against us on this particular issue.”

Adaelu however expressed optimism that electing Ikpeazu as the governor of the state would restore dead medium and small industries in Aba, “rebuilding of our hospitals, Roads, Markets, take the security of our people and property to the next high level, including electricity, give agriculture its appropriate priority in the scheme of things.

“We appeal to our brothers in Abia North and Abia Central zones to support the people of Abia south to produce the next governor, it will be wrong for them not to support us after we have supported them for the past 16 years.  We supported Abia North to produce Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu as governor of Abia state and Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu as governor for eight years. We also supported Abia central to produce Chief Theodore Orji who is concluding his second term as governor. In Aba North and south, we have done a lot of work. Anambra state alone has 170 unions in Aba, we have reached them all, the market unions and town unions of various communities. So, let this be a chance for payback time. It is time to show grand appreciation to the people of Old Aba Division. We are very optimistic that residents of Abia state will vote for our son, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu will be vote in as governor on April 11.”

He assured that the bond and relationship which has been existing between the people of Old Aba Division and the various communities living in Aba would blossom to greater heights when Ikpeazu is elected governor.

  • ‘Ikpeazu ’ll become next Abia governor’

The Assistant Media Director of the Abia State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Organisation, Mr. Kingsley Emereuwa, speaks with reporters on preparations for the governorship election.

How are your party preparing for the governorship poll in Abia State?

Abia as usual is relatively peaceful because the leadership in the state has shown commitment to peace. This, the governor has ensured by restraining himself or any of his aides or appointees from engaging in any act that would undermine peace. That is the mark of leadership and example is better than precept.

What is your take on the reports of recent violence at a town hall meeting between the PDP and APGA?

There was never a face off between the PDP and APGA or any party as the case may be. That was the creation of some elements in APGA who are desirous of creating false impression of a contest between them and the PDP.

The truth is that any day the PDP and APGA members in the state will physically descend to the arena will mark the requiem of APGA. But, we will ensure that it will not get to that point so that the peace which the present administration has laboured to build in the state will not be rubbished. The event you mentioned was the latest in the spate of violence being unleashed on the peace-loving people of Abia by one of the factional APGA governorship candidates.

Their victims were hapless villagers who were going about their normal business. Take the case of citizen Frank Dickson who was said to be on his way to buy food and was caught in the melee. As we talk now, the young man is still lying at the emergency unit of the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia with his legs shattered. This is as a result of shots he received from armed men being paraded the factional APGA candidate. So there was never a case of PDP engaging APGA in any physical duel. That may be a figment of someone’s imagination.

But, the report we got was that it was the PDP that came to disrupt a town hall…

    Report from where?

Are you not aware that was the first or initial report?

Now, you are talking. That was the very first kite they flew. Only them knew what went amiss and why they incurred the wrath of the people there. The moment they saw that they could no longer contain the anger of the villagers, their spin doctors went to the social media with this version that the PDP came to disrupt their town hall meeting. The common question then is why would PDP want to disrupt the town hall meeting or create mayhem in Ikwuano of all places which is its major catchment area. Remember that is the local government of Col. Austin Akobundu. You will also admit that there was another back-up version of their story that the state government imported hoodlums from Aguleri in Anambra State. However all these collapsed when one of the victims was traced to the hospital and luckily he spoke. That was how they became silent and have been trying to sweep the matter under the carpet.

What then in your view could have led to the fracas?

How will I know? I am not a member of APGA and I don’t dwell in speculations, neither do I possess clairvoyant powers. That is why we held a press briefing calling on the Inspector General of Police to order a full-scale investigation into the matter. But it is common knowledge that what you sow is what you will reap. Alex Otti if the truth must be told is introducing an alien culture of political violence in the state and it is not healthy even for him. Yesterday it was Frank Dickson, who knows who may be next? It could be me or even Otti himself.

Which was why I said earlier that any physical onslaught would bury APGA in Abia. That is why we must uproot this ugly trend before it germinates and gets out of control.

Don’t forget we had earlier raised alarm over the number of soldiers, policemen and armed civilians he had been parading. I am sure many viewed it as mere alarm and perhaps the concerned agencies did not take us serious. Today we have been vindicated.

What are the chances of the PDP flag bearer, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, considering the disenchantment that trailed his emergence?

There is nothing to look at as far as the governor ship election in Abia State is concerned. Okezie Ikpeazu is the next governor of Abia State. His victory in the contest is already fait accompli. On the issue of how he picked the ticket, it is on record that Abia PDP had the freest party primaries in December which none of those who lost challenged.

A further demonstration of how transparent the exercise was, is the support he is getting from those who contested with him who have queued behind him. How do you reconcile that with what happened in the other mushroom parties?

Politics has a pattern which makes it run on certain instruments. Such instruments are oiled to sustain the base. A man cannot quit his job in July and wants to govern a state he knows little or nothing about in the next few weeks. This is not an estate.

But, the governor of Anambra State, Dr. Willie Obiano, did just that…

Says who? Somebody opened the space and door for Obiano. A political structure propelled him. But what we have in Abia is a case of a man under hallucination and bondage by some dubious elements who want to milk him dry.

And talking about Anambra, you will also agree that Obiano also represents the Anambra’s version of equity which ensured that all the senatorial zones had shots at the Government House.

Why do you and many others sound so confident about Ikpeazu’s victory in the poll?

It is because we are talking about Abia where I have lived all my life and I know the 184 political wards in the seventeen local government councils. Because we are talking about a state that has just recovered from the stranglehold of a rapacious enclave.

We are talking about a state that has witnessed honesty in service and in governance even when it is not appropriate or politically expedient to say the truth, the governor has never lied to Abia people. Not for one day did he deceive the people. Here is one governor that owes up to anything that goes wrong under his watch without playing politics with the people of the state and that has given him the courage to be a better leader. Recall during the era of kidnapping, Gov. Orji never passed the blame like Gov. Amaechi was doing. And because he owed up, he was able to surmount that challenge. Today Abia is a model in security.

Look at the issue of salary arrears of two months which the opposition hyped was in neighborhood of eight months and thought it could fetch it sympathy, the government admitted owing and promised to clear it which it has done and everybody is on the same page. That is where we draw this confidence you observed. The facelift in the health sector, judiciary, education, hospitality civil service etc are the reasons behind the confidence we exude.

More so, of all the so-called opposition candidates, Ikpeazu is the only one the common man in Abia will see his face and recognise. I want to challenge you to name any serious Abia son or daughter you have seen with Otti? Politics is about people and a game of numbers. He does not have it and will never have it because his ambition was built on false foundation, lies and deceit. And the people are no fools.

But your position appears to differ from that of others who insist that the governor has not done much?

It would have been foolhardy for even the governor to expect total acceptance from the traditional critics. Those frustrated loafers who peddle that information have failed to sustain or prove it. When we talk about the achievements of the governor, we are not referring to things that cannot not be proved or ascertained. The landmark projects in the judiciary, primary and secondary schools, the e-library, International conference center, the health sector revolution, the malls are there for all to see. Orji is the only governor in Nigeria today still commissioning projects at the twilight of his administration. Have you heard anyone of them fault the legacy projects of the present administration? Wait till tomorrow when you will see this same loafers use today as reference points.

  • I’ve not signed any pact with anybody in Abia —Ikpeazu

I’ve not signed any pact with anybody in Abia —Ikpeazu

…PDP candidate ready to step on toes to fix Aba

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has said that he has not signed a secret pact with Governor Theodore Orji to pay money to him, if elected as governor.

Speaking with reporters in Lagos, Ikpeazu said that he has a pact with the people of Abia to give them hope. He promised to reposition the state and restore its glory. While ensuring that the state is properly repositioned to compete with other states.

Ikpeazu however challenged Nigerians to ask those throwing money around in millions where they got such monies from.

He said: “I have not signed anything (pact) and nobody has made that proposal to me and nobody will do it because am a person of modest means and a lot of things do not appeal to me.”

“You know from recent history that such things don’t work anywhere, you can’t show one example of somebody that has been tied and put in the pocket and he is a governor…nobody is contemplating such” He said.

Speaking on his emergence as the party’s flag bearer in the forthcoming April 11 Gubernatorial election, the Lecturer turned Politician who acknowledged the role played by Governor Orji,  posited that it is the handiwork of God and the good people of Abia state.

“Governor Theodore Orji played a role in my nomination as PDP flag bearer, and he didn’t ask money from me to do that, if he wanted money, I wouldn’t have been an option because I don’t have money to offer anybody.

“One of the candidates running the election with me, who was an aspirant in PDP, offered N3billion to Governor Orji, but the governor said no, and said that equity and justice must be done, the same candidate paid another huge amount somewhere just to get the PDP ticket, when he realized his money couldn’t buy him the PDP ticket, he ran to another party, where his money was able to buy him a ticket, the records are there to show.

“It is not about money, this is about what God wants to do, for the first time in the history of our state an ordinary lecturer, a common man like me, from Ngwa, is emerging to become Governor.”

He added that it was members of Aba Landlord Association that recommended him to governor and the PDP in the state when he was serving as Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Enviromental Protection Agency (ASEPA) in charge of Aba.

“I want to put it on record that while I was serving as Deputy General Manager of ASEPA in charge of Aba, the Aba Landlord Association who saw the leadership potential in me recommended him to the PDP hierarchy in Abia State. At one of their meetings with the state governor, they said to him, this man could become Governor, they were so excited about my determination to wrought a change in that sector of the gamut of Aba challenge, I didn’t know them and didn’t give them them a dime, in fact it was after their meeting that I was told what they told the governor.

Ikpeazu dismissed the insinuation that the governor’s son, Chinedum Orji, who is seeking to represent Umuahia Central Constituency in the House of Assembly and nursing an ambition to become the Speaker, may be used by political actors to “track” him, if he does not play along.

He said: “If his people in Umuahia Central State Constituency feels he is good enough to represent them in the House of Assembly so be it, I think it will be unfair to use my ambition as an Abia South man from Obingwa to truncate the ambition of a young Umuahia man who want to start a political career, it is unheard of.

“You don’t get elected as speaker of the House of Assembly by staying in your house and talk about it, you are going to have 24 people elected into the House and the speaker will be elected from among them, and if they say he is good enough to be the first amongst equals let him be, but if they look at him and say no he will not be, I don’t think it is proper for us to talk about the sex of a child before the child is conceive”. Ikpeazu posited.

  • Abia: Why I am better than other contestants – Ikpeazu

Abia: Why I am better than other contestants – Ikpeazu

Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, was in Lagos during the week, when his Campaign Organisation and some professionals from the state organised a fund raising dinner for him at Eko Hotel, Jasmine Hall. In a brief chat at the dinner, Ikpeazu explains his vision for Abia and why he considers himself better than other candidates. Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, reports

I AM better than the other contestants for the office of the governor of Abia State on two flanks: One is that none of them has the kind of political pedigree that I have. I have spent 14 solid years undergoing political tutelage and I know where Abia State is coming from, I know where we are and certainly where we intend to go. That is why you see them making the common mistake of criticizing me for saying that the theme of my project is called solidarity. And they don’t understand that even in the most developed areas, we also find some infrastructural deficit. But we are saying that government is a continuity, it is about vision, if there is a big picture, it is only those who understand the big picture that can interpret the big picture and then the state can run faster  to the next level as it where. The present administration for instance has built a Government House; what I mean is that you don’t spend money again building another Government House. Instead, you spend the money constructing roads where there are needed. But they don’t understand that.

“Also speaking technically, in terms of electioneering, because I have been around for 14 years, I know where the votes are, I know the sentiments of my people. On Sunday precisely, I was around Obohia road where I sat down with the ordinary Aba person, the common Aba person and you can see that we felt the pause of each person. We understand each other. So, we are best suited to assuage their fears.”

On the kind of leadership he proposes to give to Abia if elected, Ikpeazu summarises it simply as ‘leadership through service.’ As he puts it, “I don’t want to be addressed as a leader. I like to see myself as someone that has come to render service. In the course of rendering service, if I am then called a leader, I will nod my head. But I will start with service.”

He refutes the allegation that his emergence as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party with the support of Governor Theodore Orji means he is his stooge. “It’s a lie,” he said, adding, “PDP is a large political family and there is a procedure; there is a process. Some of them could not take the heat of that process because they are not part of it. They brought mercantile mentality into politics. They wanted to buy it off; offered money, but when they saw that it was beyond money but that it was a project; that it is about a vision; about the Abian people, they went away. They can’t match the force with which we are coming because; look at me, a common man and we are more in number, common people. So, coming from that constituency alone gives me an advantage over them. How many people are wealthy? They are less than five percent of the society. So, I am representing the common people and the force of the common man is unstoppable.”

On why the development of Aba seems to have dominated the campaigns of the candidates of the major political parties, Ikpeazu said, “Aba is not the only place to be developed in Abia but we understand that if you are talking about Internally Generated Revenue (IDR), Aba is the economic hub of the whole of the South-East. Thinking about that leaves you the option of digging the oil field to get the oil. So, if you invest in Aba, the chances are that you may get the revenue with which you can develop Arochukwu, Ohafia and Umuneochi and so on. That is why the candidates are emphasizing Aba. Besides that, any development you bring to Aba will rob off on the entire South-East and southern Nigeria because there is no family around the South-East that does not have a representation in Aba.”

Predicting transparent and credible election, he said there has been progressive improvement in the activity of INEC from one election to the other, adding that the coming election would be better than the previous ones.

During the well attended dinner, the chairman of the occasion, Prof. Herbert Orji, who is the Chairman of Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, said at this point in its history, Abia needs for a governor,  a man like Okezie, a biochemist, “a man with eye for details, a man that is not looking for magic but is ready to work.”

In his speech, Ikpeazu said if elected governor, his areas of focus will include development of small scale manufacturing, trading, ease of business in Aba and agriculture.

Amongst important personalities at the event were Senator Emma Nwaka, the Chairman of Abia State PDP; Chidi Ajaegbu, the chairman of the Fund Raising Committee, Emeka Onwuka and Abia State pioneer Attorney-General, Theo Nkire.

  • 2015: How far can Ikpeazu go in Abia?

2015: How far can Ikpeazu go in Abia?

THE Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has joined the governorship race in Abia State.

At the primaries, he will struggle for the ticket with other contenders, including Senator Enyeinnaya Abaribe, Senator Nkechi Nwaorgu, Mr. Friday Nwosu, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, Chief Emeka Wogu, Chief Marc Wabara, Dr. Uche Ogah, Chief Alex Oti, and Elder Acho Nwakamma.

The PDP has zoned the slot to  Abia South Senatorial Zone, which has not produced the governor in 22 years. But, some aspirants are kicking against zoning. Ogah and Otti, who are from Abia North, and Nwaogu from Abia Cengtral are in the race.

If the zoning is sustained, the beneficiary will be Ukwa Ngwa ethnic group, which has the largest population in Abia South.

Aspirants from this sub-zone, including Nwosu, Ikpeazu,  Wogu and  Abaribe, have collected nomination forms.

Ikpeazu is from Isialaukwu,  Obingwa Local Government Area.  He is perceived as a vibrant, dynamic and energetic aspirant. He is also an experienced administrator. In 2002, he was the Transition Committee Chairman of Obingwa Local Government Area. He has also served as the Special Adviser to the governor on Environment.

As the General Manager of Abia State Passengers Integrated Manifest and Safety Scheme (ASPIMSS) from 2007 to 2009, he turned around its fortunes by making it a revenue yielding agency.  The company also employed over 1000 indigenes during the period.

In 2010, Ikpeazu became the Chairman of the Governing Council of Abia State College of Health Technology, Aba. He facilitated the accreditation of three critical courses in the institution by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

Declaring his governorship ambition in Umuahia, the state capital, Ikpeazu said:  ‘My commitment is to serve God and humanity. Therefore, I am driven by a strong determination to achieve results. In this regard, I am propelled by the fundamental needs of our people. I believe that, to successfully achieve this, there is the need to consult and involve a wide spectrum of our society”.

He added: “I appreciate intellectual discussions and contributions. I encourage men of ideas to express themselves. I share their opinions and ideas on issues of interest to our society and I hold the view that ideas are the bedrock of progress. Most importantly I take responsibility for every action and inaction under my watch. As the governor, I will do my best”.

But, can he get the ticket? His opponents at the primaries are formidable actors. They are experienced politicians. For example, Abaribe has a solid structure and network. The former deputy governor contested against former Governor Orji Kalu in 2003. He ran on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He was persuaded to return to the PDP, whre he has bounced back as a senator in 2007. In 2011, he was re-elected as a senator.

Wogu, who resigned as the Minister of Labour and Productivity two weeks ago, is a grassrrots politician. He also has money to run a state wide campaign.

Nwakamma is also a household name in Abia. He is perceived as a loyal PDP chieftain.

Emuchay and Wabara are from Ukwa East Local Government Area. They are formidable candidates.    Nwosu, a lawyer, is also popular in the party. But, he has not held any political office. Therefore, critics said that he is not a tested hand.
