Set up committee to reconcile Wike, Fubara, Ikwerre begs Tinubu

The umbrella body of the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, the Ikwerre People’s Congress (IPC) Worldwide, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to set up a committee to reconcile the political dispute between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike and suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

IPC, in a statement by its chairman, Livingstone Wechie;  Vice-Chairman, Ihunwo Obi-Wali and Secretary-General, Stanley Nworgu, said the committee should be high powered with members drawn from eminent leaders and stakeholders.

“This is with a view to immediately restore the democratic order in Rivers state in the best interest of Nigeria and for the better legacy of President Bola Tinubu”, the statement said.

The group said it was concerned about the dismantling of the democratic structure in the state, saying it had given the state a bad image.

The statement said: ” Mr. President, the message you sent has been passed through your intervention but Rivers people must not suffer a shortlived democracy for any reason because we have paid our dues despite this political imbroglio.

The IPac said it disagreed with the President over the constitutional justification of the suspension of the Governor and the Rivers State House of Assembly.

” We believe that Mr. President is motivated by the aspiration of Nigerians on this matter and that he is committed to take steps to solve than escalate the matter. It is doubtless that we did not bargain for this unfortunate development and the innocent populace in Rivers should not be punished for it as in this circumstance.

“Whereas as a people we are unhappy with the unwarranted political feud among the two sides, Ikwerre people are worried about the false image now created about our dear state which has now led to serious capital flights, fears of uncertainty among citizens, loss of investors confidence among others.

“Rivers people are very desperate to have their democratic rights restored so they can enjoy the liberty of the democracy the voted for that should be accountable to the masses. All we want is a government we can call our own”.

Ikwerre hails Tinubu for establishing Southsouth Commission

The umbrella body of the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, the Ikwerre People’s Congress (IPC) Worldwide, has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing the watershed Bill of the South-South Development Commission into law on Tuesday.

The IPC in a statement by its chairman, Livingston Wechie; Deputy Chairman, Chief Ihunwo Obi-Wali and Secretary-General, Stanley Nworgu also commended the National Assembly for the timely passage of the bill.

“This is indeed is a demonstration of extraordinary intervention by the President and a show of patriotic commitment to the development of the South-South zone.

“Ikwerres have made one of the highest contributions in terms of human, natural resources and land contribution to government assets not only in the South-South but in the Niger Delta region and this ushers in a new era of reward not only for us but the rest of our great neighbours who have made loud and extremely sacrificial contributions to keep Nigeria economically afloat,” the statement reads .

IPC acknowledged that its neighbours such as the Ijaws, Ogonis, Etches, Orashi, Ibibios, Urhobos, Itshekiris, Aniomas, Igbanis among others, had also paid the supreme price in the struggle for  collective freedom and justice.

The statement said: “On the face of it, we see this as some respite as we speed up into the long awaited era of the restoration of land and resource ownership to the original ethnic native owners which is the real pipeline for our delayed development.

“IPC respectfully and humbly urges Mr. President in his wisdom to be intentional in structuring this new Commission with a strong value for all-encompassing consultative, stakeholders management mechanism, democratic and transparent system devoid of political or singular ethnic dominance.

“This commission should not be entrapped in the regrettable shortcomings of the Niger Delta Development Commission. We urge the stakeholders of the South-South to value our unity now than ever and rally support for the President to make this Commission to succeed for the peace and stability in our zone”.

  • ‘Ikwerre a distinct ethnic nation’

    ‘Ikwerre a distinct ethnic nation’

The Ikwerre ethnic group in Rivers State is a distinct ethnic group, who are not Igbo, President of Iwhnurohna Progressive Organisation (IPO), Dr Okachikwu Dibia said yesterday.

According to him cultural affinity is not a determinant of what an ethnic group, but verifiable piece of history and the innate character of a man speak for his ancestral affinity, Dr Dibia spoke yesterday at a news conference.

He chided a former Secretary-general of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Uche Okwukwu for threatening to deal ruthlessly with the Ikwerre if they continue to reject the Igbo tag.

He called the attention of Inspector-general of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and all other national and international security agencies to the threat of extermination of the Ikwerre people by Okwukwu, who he quoted to have said: “Ikwerre land is the Igbo tongue to the sea and any attempt to excise it out of Igbo land will be resisted with the sword.”

He urged Ohaneze to recognise the need to change its antagonistic attitude towards Ikwerre and respect Ikwerre as a distinct ethnic nation, instead of insulting Ikwerre through claims that provoke and promote disaffection between the Ikwerre and Igbo.

He added: “Ikwerre history has been well written and documented. Ikwerre is not Igbo. Ohaneze should know that it is only a handful of Aro people who were allowed to settle in Ikwerre that can trace their origin to Igboland. Therefore, it is very wrong, preposterous and unacceptable for anyone to say that Ikwerre is Igbo. Henceforth, such offensive, insulting, abusive and insensitive hate-claim should not be uttered by Ohaneze or any other group or individuals from any part of humanity. Iwhnurohna will not tolerate it anymore.”

Dibia said while the Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality strongly believes in one Nigeria; to realise this unity, it is important for the different composite ethnic groups to enjoy full self-determination.

The organisation called on Ohaneze to maintain good neighbourliness instead of angling and making subtle desperate moves for unification for a political entity they will dominate and control.

He pointed out that “domination breeds suspicion, suspicion breeds lack of trust which in turn breeds agitation for freedom. Hence, it is very agonising to successfully build a nation or state based on domination.”

  • Ikwerre is Igbo, says ex-Ohaneze scribe

Ikwerre is Igbo, says ex-Ohaneze scribe

A former Secretary-General of the Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dimm Uche Okwukwu has insisted that the Ikwerre ethnic nationality in Rivers State is part of the Igbo nation.

Okwukwu in a statement in Port Harcourt, countered the position advanced by the Ikwerre socio-cultural group, the Iwhnurohna Progressive Organisation (IPO) that the Ikwerre is not Igbo.

He said: “God created the Igbo of which the Ikwerre are a proud part, and the ethnic-cleansing re-creations by man since the civil war should come to a close. Ikwerre are neither ‘Igboid’, nearly, almost, related to, like, resembling or partly Igbo; the Ikwerre are Igbo, originally and entirely till eternity.

“We understand that with the current prospect of a Rivers Igbo becoming the Ohanaeze President-General come January 2025, everything is in high gear in some circles to undermine this possibility of reuniting the Igbo, with one fifth columnist after another procured to vow non-Igboness of Igbo-speaking Rivers peoples, just in order to breach the Ohanaeze constitution and deny the Rivers Igbo the PG rotation.

“Hence, of all Igbo groups, the re-assembling of efforts to restart de-Igbonizing those along the Igbo contiguity to the coast is quite understandable. But, those Ikwerre elements who derive pleasure in extracting the Ikwerre from their kith and kin should address or answer the following before the Ikwerre, Igbo, Nigeria, and the world.”

Tracing the history of Ikwerre as Igbo, Okwukwu said: “We the Igbo, including the Ikwerre have related with Europeans at least since the 15the century and the interactions are well documented.

“Those ‘we are not Igbo’ or “we are no more Igbo’ traitors and fifth columnists among us should show Nigerians and all the world, a single document, not even two or more, where the word ‘Ikwerre’ exists in the Igbo, Eastern, European or Nigerian lexicon or records before the early decades of the 20th century as a distinct ethnic group, race, unrelated to Igbo.

“This sudden outburst is selfish only for economic and political ends. As late as 1957, Chief Joseph Wobo stated before the Henry Willink commission that ‘Ikwerre’ are Igbo and, from Port Harcourt to Onitsha is Igbo land. Based on evidence before it, the commission found that Ikwerre are Igbo.”

  • Ikwerre youths decry murder of deputy director of logistics

A group, the Ikwerre Youth Movement International (IYM), has decried the murder of its Deputy Director of Logistics Samuel Wanjoku aka Egbe.

IYM is an umbrella organisation of Ikwerre youths in four local governments in Rivers State, namely Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, Ikwerre and Emohua. It said it might be forced to seek other means of protection.

This followed alleged failure by the Rivers State Government and security agencies to protect its members and others.

IYM, through its Deputy President-General Kingsley Owhondah, accompanied by Secretary-General Marshall Amankemeku Chuku and Director of Publicity Dike Lawrence Bekwele, yesterday in Port Harcourt condemned the murder of Wanjoku.

The victim was a younger brother of IYM’s President-General Azubike Wanjoku, who represents Ikwerre Constituency in Rivers State House of Assembly on the All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) platform.

Samuel and another IYM member, Moses Ogu, were kidnapped on November 11, but Samuel’s bullet-ridden body was found last Saturday in a forest on Omuanwa-Ubima Road. Ogu is still in the kidnappers’ den.

IYM said: “The death of Samuel Wanjoku is a big blow to the Ikwerre nation, IYM family and a great loss to the Wanjoku family in Apani. We condemn the dastardly act perpetrated by avowed enemies of Ikwerreland.

“IYM calls on security agencies, especially the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to investigate and arrest the perpetrators of the wicked act.

“We condemn the insensitivity of the Rivers State government over the incessant killing of Ikwerre youths, mostly in Ikwerre and Emohua councils. The killings and kidnappings have been on the increase in the area in the last two years.

“The government must protect our people. Otherwise we will create other means for our communities and people to be protected if the existing legal security platforms are no longer viable. We will no longer tolerate Ikwerre sons and daughters being killed. We may be forced to seek other means of protecting our people, should the government refuse to act.”

The group said a three-day mourning would be observed for Wanjoku, starting from today.

It directed Ikwerre youths to wear black clothes, adding that the chapters should conduct prayers on the third day (Wednesday).

IYM enjoined members to remain law-abiding.

It said the public should provide information to assist in the rescue of Ogu.

  • United Ikwerre gone with the wind

Ikwerre bu’otu (Ikwerre is one) was a popular slogan used in those days by the people of Ikwerre ethnic nationality to remind themselves that they are one indivisible entity. The slogan was also used to remind any Ikwerre man that it was necessary to always queue behind their brothers in times of good and bad.

It is in this spirit of Ikwerre Bu’otu that the Supreme Council of Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality called Ogbakor-Ikwerre was set up.  Ogbakor-Ikwerre was the final voice of Ikwerre people. Any matter taken to it  was resolved amicably. They pronounced judgment on issues and parties accepted their decisions.

But today Ogbakor-Ikwerre is seen as a mere gathering of unrecognised village chiefs. It has been infected by political virus and has lost its value.

Ikwerre sons and daughters have forgotten the slogan Ikwerre Bu’otu because of personal aggrandisement and selfish desire, which escalated to high level of betrayal and rape of trust.

Of course, it is now a shame and taboo to shout Ikwerre bu’otu in any gathering or in the public. It is now meaningless.

Our communities have been divided; they are now giving their support to one political leader or the other. Our community leaders and kingmakers now accept bribe in the daylight to execute their brothers or lead protest against them even without asking what he has done wrong. Some of the communities in Ikwerre land have two monarchs and council of chiefs, the one loyal to ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi and the ones loyal to Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

We thought it was  just a mere  destruction of  the traditional symbol of trust and brotherhood but it went beyond that; it has got to a level where Ikwerre people no longer trust one another. His brother is not just an enemy but an unforgivable one. We are in a situation where we prefer to trust a man from another tribe than to live or trust our brother. Many Ikwerre people, especially those who find themselves in the position of authority, have on several occasions signed the death warrant of their fellow Ikwerre brothers. And they are still doing that till today just because of their personal interest.

Where is Wike, who once told his fans when he was local government chairman that he would forever continue to support his brother, Amaechi? Of course, he fought the battle like a great Ikwerre wrestler when former President Olusegun Obasanjo pronounced the K-leg wahala on Amaechi. At the end they won the battle and took over Rivers State Government House through the Supreme Court judgment. Today where is the brotherhood that bound Amaechi and Wike together? It is now torn to pieces? Who among them should our children emulate as a role model?

Chief Sergeant Awuse is one of the popular sons of Ikwerreland; he once enjoyed the admiration and support of Ikwerre people. Most of us, during his days of political bulldozor when Amaechi was in the Rivers State House of Assembly as Speaker, supported his ambition to become the first Ikwerre governor. But as a political prostitute, he frustrated most of his supporters and abruptly ended his dream of becoming the governor by jumping from one party to the other. During Amaechi’s second tenure election campaign, Chief Awuse told Ikwerre youths and supporters that he wouldn’t have measured with Amaechi’s achievements if he were governor. He then raised Amaechi’s hand and asked Ikwerre people to support him. Where is Awuse and the love for the brotherhood which he once preached to us?

Mike Elechi, a former permanent secretary in Rivers State Ministry of Agriculture, was an incomparable supporter of Amaechi. He was not the type that gave order or made call when it was getting tough, he fought the fight by himself. And Amaechi hardly joked with him as far as Elele community and Ikwerre Local Government was concerned. Today the Ikwerre affection that made him to support Amaechi is gone.

What of O.C.J Okocha and family?  They were very close to Amaechi. The relationship was intact until they went off the lane with betrayed heart. Where is Austine Opara, former Deputy Speaker of House of Representative and Amaechi’s   soul brother who with other friends turned Amaechi house to their meeting  point during the Peter Odili administration? Emeka Woke, Prince Paul Wonodi, Chief Wogu Okala, Chinyere Igwe, Sam Ogeh; these were Amaechi reliable soldiers whom he gave opportunities to serve  the state in different capacities, both at the state and at the federal levels. The list is endless.

These people are all Ikwerre, and they were before now strong supporters of Amaechi. What went wrong? What were their reasons for leaving Amaechi or Amaechi’s reason for not begging them to come back? Could it be possible that our political hatred on one another can supersede the love we have for one another as brothers and sisters? How united is Ikwerre ethnic nationality? Do we ever consider the future of our children in imbibing the true spirit of our fatherland? Must we hate or kill our fellow Ikwerre man before we could make it in life? What are we teaching the younger generation that will take over from us? These are unanswered questions burning in the heart of many Ikwerre people. As far as I am concerned, our pursuit of personal gain cannot in anyway bring peace and unity in Ikwerre land; instead it will divide us the more and make mockery of Ikwerre Bu’otu, which our forefather taught us to say. Ikwerre Anumeka.

  • Ikwerre leaders, IYM threaten N2b suit against anti-Amaechi campaigners

The leaders of four Ikwerre-speaking local government areas of Rivers State and their youths’ movement (IYM) have threatened to file a N2 billion libel suit against a group, Integrity Group Organisation (IGO), for allegedly publishing defamatory statement against former Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

IGO, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), published on August 3 an advertorial that the former governor allegedly embezzled billions of Naira belonging to Rivers State.

The group is said to be supporting Governor Nyesom Wike to fight his opponents.

The four Ikwerre-speaking local government areas are: Obio/Akpor, Emohua, Ikwerre and Port Harcourt City.

They share the same cultural identity.

Reacting yesterday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, to the advertorial, leaders of the four local government areas and IYM said they had asked the NGO to produce the evidence on the allege fraud within seven days.

On behalf of the four local government areas, Emohua Local Government Area’s Chairman Lucky Worluh said the Ikwerre would file a libel suit against the NGO to prove Amaechi’s innocence.

The spokesman said the action would be taken against the NGO and its sponsors, if it failed to back the libellous publication against Amaechi with a genuine document before the expiration of the ultimatum.

He said leaders and elders of the four local government areas and the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) supported the legal action to defend the former governor, who brought honour and development to Ikwerre land.

Worluh said: “We do not only condemn the unholy allegations against Amaechi but we also challenge the leader of the unregistered NGO, Mr.  Livingstone Nwejie, his paymaster and sponsors to make public all relevant documents relating to the allegation within seven days of this publication.”

The spokesman noted that Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its leaders were only interested in how to bring Amaechi down.

According to him, with his (Amaechi’s) rising profile across Nigeria, especially for leading an armless revolution that ousted former President Goodluck Jonathan and heading the campaign that brought in the Muhammadu Buhari administration to power, it should be expected that the PDP would mount more smear campaigns against Amaechi.

IYM’s National President Azubuike Wanjoku said the Ikwerre ethnic nationality would not allow what it called a dubious publication to insult and blackmail the former governor.

He said: “We wish to state categorically that the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, Rivers State and Niger Deltans are indebted to Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi to have offered his life to lead a common sense revolution against the Jonathan administration…”

Peterside’s kinsmen: Rivers not for only Ikwerre

•Toby, others urged support for APC candidate

The kinsmen of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, under the aegis of Opobo/Nkoro Patriots, have urged Rivers people to massively vote for the 44-year-old member of the House of Representatives.

The Opobo/Nkoro patriots said Rivers State is not only for Ikwerre people.

Opobo/Nkoro patriots spoke in Port Harcourt yesterday through Prof. Dagogo Fubara, Alabo Biakpo Jack Tolofi, Dr. Silas Okansu and a former Rivers Deputy Governor, Sir Gabriel Toby.

The Opobo/Nkoro patriots said: “We thank Eze Ekpeye Logbo, chief and the entire Ekpeye people (of Rivers State) for their support. The Abua, Eleme, Engenni, the Ogba, Etche and Omuma people (all of Rivers State), we thank you. The market women, men, the non-indigenes and indeed, all people of goodwill have, in various ways, accepted the candidacy of Dr. Peterside. We say thank you and may God bless and prosper all those who have stood and defended the cause of justice, fairness, and equity, that, this time a round, the riverine section of the state be given the opportunity to produce a governor.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime, which all true sons and daughters of Opobo and Nkoro Kingdoms (in coastal Opobo/Nkoro LGA of Rivers State) cherish. We therefore call on all Rivers people and those resident in Rivers State to come out en masse on February 28, 2015, to vote Dr. Dakuku Adol Pererside, the APC’s standard bearer, as governor of Rivers State.

“It remains for us to place on record our deep appreciation to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, for his courage and outstanding sense of justice. It was he (Amaechi) who said from the outset that he would not support any other Ikwerre person to succeed him, because Rivers State is not only for the Ikwerre. Governor Amaechi went ahead to urge his party to nominate a riverine candidate to be governor. By this singular act, our dear governor has shown that indeed every Rivers man and woman can aspire for any office in the country. He has renewed the faith of every child in the strength of our rainbow coloured state and reassured us that no community will be left behind, in our march to building the Rivers State of our dreams.

“We are also mindful to note that it is only the APC, as a party, that accepted the plea of various Ijaw groups, including that of our leader, Chief Edwin Clark, who joined the Ijaw chiefs and elders, in urging all political parties to nominate a riverine person to bear their flags in Rivers State.

“We therefore call on all registered voters in Rivers State to ensure that we all come out and vote and protect our votes. Remember, your votes count. So, let us all come and elect Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, the APC’s standard bearer as our governor during the governorship election, scheduled to hold on February 28, 2015.”

  • Ikwerre buries ‘world’ oldest woman

It was a celebration of life at Rumuorlumeni community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers state last Saturday as Ikwerre sons and daughter gathered to bid farewell to late Mrs Wordu Grace Wamanda, who at a reported age of 145 years was the oldest surviving woman in Ikwerre land before her death.

Five months ago families and relatives of the Late Mrs. Wordu rolled out the drum to celebrate her record breaking 145th birthday. She had already surpassed the age of any living woman in her clan and the ceremony was marked with fanfare and various traditional and religious rites a day prayers for ageless woman.

However, Niger Delta Report investigation revealed that members of the late woman’s family were unhappy about perceived non-recognition of her feat by both the local and state authorities.

Some elders in Ikwerre land who spoke with our reporter argue that  Mrs Wordu was not only the oldest woman in Ikwerre, but in Rivers State and probably in the world.

It was gathered that the debate on whether Mama Grace Wamanda had broken the world record for longevity resurfaced shortly after her death two weeks earlier.

Sources within the family agreed that it was indeed difficult to ascertain the accurate account of her age due to the fact that she had outlived traditional historians and her contemporaries who are the custodians of her family records.

“Most of those who are elders in the various families said they could not give good account of mama because they met her in the family at her old age, that means those who could give a detail account of Mama are no longer living. It is difficult to meet anybody who knew her as a young lady,” a member of the family told our reporter.

Consequently, it was learnt that the age of 145 was unanimously adopted based on the oral accounts of her younger relatives, who have clocked 100 years and their memories of how older she was based on other historical events such as eclipses and natural events and disasters.

But some of the elder members of the family,  especially the women folks maintained that Mama is above 145. They lamented that the Ikwerre nation had been robbed of record of producing the world’s oldest woman because of lack accurate and verifiable records.

Mrs. Chinyere Nchelem  Manuyewhor Wordu, one of the family’s daughters-in-law, who spoke to Niger Delta Report said. “I was married into the family at the age of 25 years with the approval of Mama. But I met her as a very old woman. She was already using walking stick; she was very old and today I am above 50 years and we are still taking about 145th as her age it can’t be, mama was more than that.”

Speaking further, Mrs Wordu revealed that longevity ran in the family, recalling that, “Mama’s father died at the age of 130 years. I will say that is part of her family’s grace. Mama was a very nice woman who cared for everyone in the family she took us all like her sons and daughters. She never antagonized anybody to the extent of being push to the wall. She was discipline, courageous and hard working woman.”

Chief Sunday Wahunoro, 88, who is the current head of the family and kindred also averred that the late Mrs Wordu’s age could be over 145, adding that the family merely relied on the fact available to them.

“She is older than the  age they calculated because my own mother died at the age of 135 years. Mrs. Grace was among the pioneer member of Evo-nu-Apara women meeting of Rumuolumeni in the 70s and 80s. She was the President of Evo-nu-Apara Women’s meeting in Rumuorlumeni and she was a member of Rinya Ohna Rumuorlumeni group.”

Another member of the family,  Dr. Agwnu Justice Oduchi, a media consultant said, “Mama should be celebrated as Ikwerre world’s oldest woman, I think it sounds unbelievable to many people but it is rea. The world should know that  people in Ikwerre ethnic national  are  living with the grace of God. If what happen to us was to be other part of the country the news would have been everywhere but here it looks as if we don’t appreciate God. Mama was a peace loving woman she made a lot of sacrifice in pursuing peace in the family and the entire community.”

The Biography of Late Mrs. Wordu, which the family presented to NDR,   showed that she had no biological children of her own, but she ‘adopted’ her stepchildren and all the children around her, who she treated with love and care as she would her own children.

Manuyewhor Samuel Wordu, one of those she took as her children said. “Mama Grace got married as the first wife (Ogbotu) to the Late Chief Wordu Wawhnunoro in Mgbu-Iriata of Rumuorlumeni in Akpor Kingdom. Mama was very supportive to her husband who was a teacher at the time of their marriage. Despite the fact that the marriage was not blessed with a child, her husband loved her. Being a well groomed woman she understood what friends may say to her husband, so she advised her husband to take another wife on her behalf like Sarah in the bible. The second wife died after giving birth to two children and they became hers.”
