  • Ilori, Apampa urge underwriters to build trust

UNDERWRITERS have been urged to build Nigerians’trust in insurance penetration, experts have said.

The experts, Mrs. Yetunde Ilori, the Director-General, Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), and Mr. Moruf Apampa, the  Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Sunu Assurance Plc, said this at the conference on Insurance and Pension in Lagos.

They said since insurance business is about good faith, insurers must earn the trust of the people to boost insurance penetration.

The reason Nigerians are neglecting insurance, according to Mrs. Ilori, is because of the negative perception they have about insurance services, stating that there is no regulatory enforcement for insurance unlike pension. Misconception and misrepresentation, she said, are other problems that must be addressed by operators in the sector.

“It is high time insurers understood what the buyers are looking for; how do they want it as well as where do they want it so that this will drive a change in their behavioural pattern when it comes to deploying their limited resources,” she said.

Moreover, she said, if insurance products are readily accessible, it will attract more people and if deployed through mobile phones and familiar terrains such as the banks, people will take advantage of this and embrace insurance, thereby deepening penetration as well contributing to the nation’s economy.

When developing insurance products, she said, innovation and creativity should be taken into consideration, noting that a product should be able to address the needs of the customer, should be kept simple and flexible. She equally urged operators to offer bundled and complementary products that will make insurance attractive to Nigerians.

Stating that products should be scaled down in such a way that they address the immediate needs, she added that insurance pricing should be scientific and commensurate discounts and incentives be put in place so that people can love it.

“Insurance companies, association and regulators should be responsive when it comes to complaints and disputes resolution. Those that sell insurance should be people that are knowledgeable and have high sense of honesty, who will not deceive the buyers. Since Information Communication Technology (ICT) is the in thing, insurance company should invest more in ICT so that people can leverage it and be reached when they want it as they want it.” she stressed.

On his part, Apampa said insurers must know their customers to be able to carve products that address their immediate needs, adding that, it is high time operators focused on the retail business.

According to him, “the most important thing for us (insurance companies) to do is to first know our customers; how do we reach them and how to serve them because if you don’t know your customer, you can’t reach and serve them. Insurance penetration is below 1.5 per cent, and yet, operators are focusing on the corporate side of the business. What is happening to the retail side of the business; the market women; the trade associations? We need to identify these people and then device means to reach them.”

Stating that insurance policy rates might not necessarily be a challenge, he believes insurers are not doing enough to convince the people to buy insurance.

Okada rider can afford N2,000 pepper soup in a day and the same Okada rider cannot afford to buy annual insurance for N1,500. What we need to do, as I said earlier, is to know these customers. Now, they are willing to pay, but how do we make them to pay? They only want two things, which are, investment and protection,” he stressed.

Urging underwriting firms to make their products accessible and attractive to these people, he called on operators to be responsive to claims settlement as these can go a long way to make Nigerians build their trust in insurance services.

To him, “We have to be very fast in terms of paying claims. In terms of product innovation, I think we have to be very innovative. What kind of products are we churning out? Are these products really addressing the need of the people? These are questions that must be answered. The only thing we can give to these people is to get their trust and when you get their trust, they can give you their money.”

Govt: Attack on Ilori is assault on Osun

The Osun State government yesterday said the attack on its Commissioner for Regional Integration, Bola Ilori, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, at the All Progressives Congress (APC) restructuring summit is barbaric, reprehensible and an assault on the sovereignty of the state.

Ilori was part of the delegation that presented Osun State’s position at the forum last Thursday.

A statement by Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s Media Adviser, Sola Fasure, said hoodlums’ attack on Ilori was said to be political motivated and sponsored by a top-ranking Ondo State Executive Council (Exco) member.

?The statement noted that the attack was indirectly meted out to Osun State, which Ilori represented at the programme.

It said: “The statement credited to Yemi Olowolabi that ‘what happened is sad but it is avoidable. It is apparent the Osun delegates came prepared with thugs, charms, ammunition and cudgels to an event, which was supposed to be an all-APC event’ was highly undiplomatic and not expected from a commissioner of that status.

“This state of affairs was far from the truth as Olowolabi made people to believe. The Osun delegate simply went armed with their intellect to marshal the position of the state.

“Why would a delegate ?go with dangerous objects to a conference on restructuring when Ondo and Osun are not at war or in confrontation over any issue?

“Ilori represented the government and people of Osun State. Therefore, he deserved to be accorded the courtesy and respect due to the state. He deserved to be protected by the Government of Ondo as well as security agencies at the venue of the conference.

“All these safety measures were not in place. Rather, Ilori was exposed? to attack by some top government official, who reportedly had an axe to grind with him over election matters in the state.

“The attack on Ilori is barbaric and reprehensible, to say the least. It is no doubt an attack on the people and Government of Osun, which Ilori represented at the meeting. We condemn this affront on the people and Government of Osun, which the attack on our delegate signposted.”

  • Why APC is boycotting poll, by Ilori

Why APC is boycotting poll, by Ilori

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon Bola Ilori, has explained why the party will not participate in the council election.

He said there is a case in the Supreme Court that has not been resolved.

Besides, the APC chieftain noted that Governor Olusegun Mimiko set up a committee on the creation of new local governments, which has not submitted its report.

Ilori said: “We are ready for the local government election with quality candidates. We however, are not ready to legitimise the planned local government selection by the Mimiko government when we know it’s an effort in futility with the pendency of Ondo State Local Government administration matters with the Supreme Court.”

“Why all these waste in Ondo State that is owing the highest number of months in outstanding salaries in South West Nigeria?

“How does a government that announced the commencement of the process of creating new Local Government Areas with fun-fair now suddenly go mute after dissipating millions of naira on the process only to turn round to be touting election into the existing councils, this is a fraud? One wonders if he plans to dissolve the elected Councils after creating his new local government within the few months left in his administration. We don’t suffer such amnesia, our party will stand up to him on this” Ilori said.

The former Special Adviser to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Enviroment and Sanitation Matters said government resources were being expended without any visible human development.

Ilori: Power should shift in Ondo

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Special Adviser to the governor of Osun on Environment and Sanitation Matters, Bola Ilori, has joined other well-meaning Ondo State indigenes to congratulate the Sunshine State as she marks her 40th year of existence.

In a statement by his media office, Ilori said Ondo people can celebrate for living as one peaceful entity since the state was created by General Muritala Muhammed in February 3, 1976.

“It is, however, regrettable that despite its huge mineral and human resources, Ondo State is now competing with less endowed landlocked states like Ekiti and Osun for the title of highest salary debtor in the South West?

‘As of today, the oil producing and derivation collecting Ondo state owes more outstanding salaries, pension and deductions than any other state in the South West” Ilori said.

While calling for more openness in governance, Ilori lamented that “Insincerity has eaten so deep into the governance ethos of the current band in Ondo State House that shame could not allow them reveal the real debt profile of the state. When other states declared their true debt and got bailout which was subsequently paid to their workers, Ondo State government chose to lie about the real debt profile and its now reaping the profane fruit of deceit as the bailout fund was consequentially sank by Access Bank because of huge undisclosed outstanding debt.”

“I challenge the government to publish how it shared the twenty billion naira bailout fund he got from the APC led Federal Government in October 2015.”

“Nobody has received any salary or pension bank alert in Ondo State since October 2015 till date.” Ilori submitted.

However, Ilori who admonished the people to embrace the wind of charge blowing across the country, said there are better days ahead for the State. He urged people of Ondo State to remember the saying that ‘a fool at 40, is a fool forever’. The people must take charge and rescue the State from the present rudderless PDP led government.

“No more foolery in Ondo, change cometh!”. Ilori concluded.

  • ‘Ilori is not our leader’

Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo West/East Federal Constituency have dissociated themselves from the declaration of a former Special Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Environmental Sanitation, Bola Ilori, as the constituency’s party leader.

A statement by Chairman, APC, Ondo West, Mr Adeala Ademulegun; the Organising Secretary, APC State Exco, Mr. Raphael Adetimehin and Assistant Auditor, APC State Exco, Mr. Ebenezer Akinsulire, said Ilori’s claim was “a joke taken too far.”

According to them, the orchestrated declaration of Ilori as the leader of APC in Ondo East and West local governments was an attention-seeking gimmick in a bit to be “noticed by party leaders upstairs.”

“It is to be noted that the so-called declaration was remarkable for the absence of all notable leaders of APC in Ondo Federal Constituency,” the statement said.

The party men said the authentic leaders in Ondo Federal Constituency were well known.

“These are leaders that work day and night to uplift the fortunes of the party and not spend time and money creating instability here and there!

“We mention in particular the likes of Dr. Bayo Ademodi, an engineer and scientist, a former Special Adviser, Senatorial Chairman and Zonal Co-ordinator, Buhari Campaign Organisation; and Mrs. Lola Fagbemi, a former Special Adviser, Auditor in the State Exco and Women Co-ordinator, Buhari Campaign Organisation, Ondo State.

“And how about the important personalities who joined APC from Mimiko’s  Labour Party and PDP and who contributed their level best in achieving a famous victory in Mimiko’s  constituency  at the last general elections?

“Incidentally, it was during the campaign period that Bola Ilori was busy trying to enthrone himself, falsely, as the State Coordinator of the Buhari Campaign Organisation in Ondo State, a situation very much akin to his present self-declaration as the leader of APC in Ondo Federal Constituency.

“He similarly declared himself (again falsely) as the Ondo State Director-General of Ribadu Campaign Organisation for the General Elections of 2011,” the statement said.

The statement said Ilori has not contributed as much as the likes of General Oyeneyin (rtd), Prof Ropo Sekoni, Ambassador Orobola Fasehun, Yinka Adeyosoye, Gbemi Oyeneyin, among others.

“We ask, is Bola Ilori also the leader of the likes of Dr. Tayo  Fawehinmi, Director of Motayo Clinics and an erstwhile member of the House of Representatives, and Senator Gbenga Ogunniya, a three term distinguished senator of the Federal Republic?

“We, the undersigned, on behalf of ourselves and leaders and teeming members of APC in Ondo Federal Constituency hereby declare that Bola Ilori is solo; he is completely on his own while all our leaders are together on the same page on the activities of APC in Ondo kingdom.

“Most members of the party are aware that APC Constitution does not have a space for a leader of two different local governments,” the statement added.
