    UPDATED: Uzodimma presents ₦1.439 trillion budget to Imo Assembly

    Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, on Monday, presented a budget proposal of ₦1.439 trillion for the 2026 fiscal year to the Imo House of Assembly.

    Presenting the budget tagged “Budget of Economic Breakthrough,” Governor Uzodimma explained that the total budget for 2026 is ₦1,439,573,590,405.04, representing a 78% increase from the ₦807 billion budget of 2025.

    The governor disclosed that the proposal consisted of 83.4 percent capital expenditure and 16.6 percent recurrent expenditure with substantial allocations for health, works, and power sectors to support economic growth.

    Uzodimma said the figure was predicated on improved federal allocation and internally generated revenue, and his ambition to eradicate “a generator-based power economy and provide world-class infrastructure to facilitate economic breakthrough.”

    The proposed Recurrent Expenditure for the 2026 fiscal year is N238,499,999,653, covering personnel costs, overheads, and subventions, while the total projected Capital Expenditure is N1,201,073,590,752.04.

    He noted that this was a clear statement of his administration’s direction and determination to provide needful infrastructures for economic development.

    Governor Uzodimma said that the Ministry of Agriculture and food security is allocated N20.506 billion, while the Health Ministry will get N698.163 billion.

    He also said that the Ministry of Works and infrastructural development is allocated N87.727bn, while the Ministry of entrepreneurship and skill acquisition will receive N6.471bn.

    The Ministry of Power and Electrification gets N190.451 billion, the Education Ministry was allocated N60.623 billion, while the Ministry of Rural Development receives N15.106 billion.

    The governor expressed gratitude for the support of the Imo State House of Assembly, acknowledging their collaboration in passing bills that benefit citizens.

    Earlier The Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Chike Olemgbe, expressed hope that the budget would usher in increased and improved power generation in the state, increased infrastructural projects, improved healthcare, and increased human capital development, as well as sustained food security.

    Olemgbe stated that the governor had continued to abide by the tenets of democracy as enshrined in the constitution, while commending him for his initiatives geared towards strengthening security in the state.

    He commended the governor for his achievements and assured him of the House’s support for his policies geared towards the state’s progress.

    In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Speaker, Amarachi Iwuanyanwu (Nwangele), commended the governor for diligently piloting the affairs of the state.

  • Imo Assembly commends Uzodimma for increasing workers’ minimum wage

    Imo Assembly commends Uzodimma for increasing workers’ minimum wage

    The Imo House of Assembly on Tuesday adopted a motion commending Gov. Hope Uzodimma for increasing the minimum wage of workers from N76,000 to N104,000.

    The lawmakers also commended the governor for the payment of backlog of gratuities to Imo pensioners.

    The Chairman, House Committee on Pensions, Civil service, Labour, and productivity, Mr Kingsley Ozurumba (APC-Isu) proposed the commendation in a motion he presented during plenary on Tuesday in Owerri.

    While presenting the motion, Ozurumba noted that the challenges in the global and Nigerian economy had limited the ability of governments to pay salaries and wages of workers.

    He stated that governor Uzodimma has, however, been on the forefront in encouraging and enhancing the provision of the welfare of workers and pensioners in the state.

    He added that the leadership of the organised labour union in the state in a meeting with his committee had expressed satisfaction with the governor’s efforts at improving their welfare.

    The lawmaker also commended the governor for the release of N16bn for the payment of the gratuities of retirees.

    He, therefore, urged the house to commend the governor for his magnanimity and commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees.

    Supporting the motion, the Deputy Chief whip, Mr Kelechi Ofurum (Owerri North) commended Uzodimma for amenities put in place for the comfort of workers including providing vehicles for transporting workers and maintenance of offices.

    Also speaking, the Majority Leader, Mr Kanayo Onyemaechi (Owerri West), added that the increased minimum wage in addition to other efforts to improve workers’ welfare would boost the morale of the state employees.

    Onyemaechi went on to commend the governor for the various ongoing projects in the state, particularly the Orashi power plant.

    Mr Innocent Ikpamezie (APC-Mbaitoli), noted that prior to the wage increase, the governor had consistently demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of workers.

    He added that the governor had also cleared the arrears of the salaries owed to the employees to encourage them to put in their best.

    The motion was adopted following more contributions and a unanimous vote in support of the prayers of the chief sponsor.

    The Speaker, Mr Chike Olemgbe (Ihitte Uboma), directed the Clerk to convey the resolution of the house to the office of the governor.

    Imo Assembly screens, approves two Commissioner-nominees

    The Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) has screened two commissioner-nominees appointed by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

    The nominees, Prof. Bernard Thompson Ikegwuoha and Dr. (Mrs.) Vivian Chioma Egu, were screened during the plenary session on Wednesday at the Assembly Complex in Owerri.

    Speaker Chike Olemgbe announced the completion of the screening exercise, stating that both nominees underwent thorough scrutiny and were approved to serve as commissioners in Governor Uzodimma’s administration.

    The entire House unanimously agreed on the nominees’ eligibility and suitability, with their screening and approval receiving full support from all members present.

    The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the outcome to the Governor’s office for further action.

    The House was adjourned until Thursday after the Majority Leader, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, moved for adjournment.

    Imo Assembly seeks ban on styrofoam over health, environmental risks

    The Imo State House of Assembly has urged the state government to ban the use of styrofoam, commonly used by food vendors for takeaway packaging, citing environmental and health concerns.

    The motion, sponsored by Minority Leader Hon. Princewill Amuchie and co-sponsored by seven other lawmakers, highlights the potential dangers of styrofoam, including cancer risks and environmental pollution.

    During deliberations, lawmakers emphasized the urgency of government intervention to protect public health and the ecosystem. Hon. Amuchie, representing Aboh-Mbaise State Constituency, noted that while styrofoam serves as insulation in buildings, its widespread use in food packaging poses significant risks.

    The Assembly is calling for immediate regulatory action to phase out styrofoam usage and promote safer alternatives.

    Amuchie said, “The motion requires urgent attention both from the Government and the Public, including Private organizations, as the material is being used, with people not aware of its hazardous effects to human life.

    According to him, “Waste pollution is a huge problem in Nigeria and across the globe, with serious impacts on the environment, including blocking drainages.”

    He said, “The continuous production of Styrofoam releases toxic chemicals that contaminate our air, water and soil which brings some incurable diseases like cancer, neurological damage and reproductive issues.”

    Amuchie further said a taskforce should be set up to clamp down on the evil product, as the hazardous effects of Styrofoam materials have prompted the Lagos State Government to ban its production and usage, while some countries like United States of America, China, Taiwan, Rwanda etc have taken bold steps in banning the material. 

    The Motion which was seconded by Hon Barrister Chisom Ojukwu, Member Representing Nkwerre State Constituency, was co-sponsored by the 10 lawmakers.

    Imo Assembly hikes Uzodimma’s 2025 budget to N807b

    Governor Hope Uzodimma has signed into law the Imo State 2025 Appropriation Bill increasing it to N807 billion from N756 billion with a pledge to support full implementation of the budget.

    Signing the bill into law at the New Exco Chambers, Government House Owerri, Uzodimma noted that what the lawmakers did by increasing the original figures he presented before them few days ago shows an alignment between the Executive and the legislature in providing essential services to the people.

    The Governor, who expressed satisfaction over the expeditious passage of the appropriation bill and tinkering with the original numbers, said that what had been done by the Assembly shows that the lawmakers have challenged the executive to commence work without delay on the 2025 budget.

    The Governor allocated huge chunk of the budget to capital expenditure in 2025 to the tone of N694,786,041,220 or 86.09 per cent of the total sum while the recurrent expenditure, N112,302,000,000) or 13.91 percent was approved.

    The Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development gets N297,509,312,778 or 42.8%, the Ministry of Transport, N101,010,000,000 or 14.5% and  the Ministry of Power and Electrification, N74,755,479,042 or 10.8%.

    The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security was allocated N50,020,000,000 or 7.2% of the budget, 

    the Ministry of Education, N49,460,000,000 or 7.1% while the Ministry of Health gets N31,933,234,000 or 4.65%.

    Uzodimma said after signing the appropriation bill: “I have just signed into law the 2025 Imo State Appropriation Bill, which now has the force of law and serves as the financial operational manual for the state.

    “While I initially proposed a budget of Seven Hundred and Fifty-Six Billion Naira for the year, the State House of Assembly, in its wisdom, adjusted it to N807 billion. It shows the alignment between the Executive and the Legislature in providing essential infrastructure and services to the people of the State.

    “The total 2025 budget, as amended by the Assembly and signed into law, is Eight Hundred and Seven Billion, Eighty-Eight Million, Forty-One Thousand, Two Hundred and Twenty Naira (N807,088,041,220).

    “Capital allocation: Six Hundred and Ninety-Four Billion, Seven Hundred and Eighty-Six Million, Forty-One Thousand, Two Hundred and Twenty Naira (N694,786,041,220) (86.09%) while Recurrent allocation N112,302,000,000 or 13.91%.

    “I commend the Speaker and members of the House of Assembly for the expeditious passage of the Appropriation Bill and for increasing the initial budget estimate. This patriotic gesture challenges the executive to commence work immediately.

    “As outlined in my recent budget speech, this Budget of Expanded Economic Opportunities is designed to drive the economic transformation of our state through improved infrastructure and industrialization.     “The following allocations to core ministries underscore my resolve to strengthen economic growth in 2025: Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development: N297,509,312,778 (42.8%), Ministry of Transport: N101,010,000,000 (14.5%), Ministry of Power and Electrification: N74,755,479,042 (10.8%), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security: N50,020,000,000 (7.2%), Ministry of Education: N49,460,000,000 (7.1%), Ministry of Health: N31,933,234,000 (4.65%).”

    The Governor pledged to fully and faithfully implement the budget to achieve its goals.

    ” We will create expanded economic opportunities through investment and job creation. Ndi Imo shall be the beneficiaries.

    “I urge everyone and all stakeholders to support this administration in our endeavor to set Imo State on a path of sustainable development.”

    JUST IN: Imo Assembly votes to remove Chief Judge over alleged age falsification

    The Imo State House of Assembly on Wednesday, July 17, recommended the removal of Chief Judge, Theresa Chikeka from office. 

    The chairman of the ad-hoc committee Hon. Ikenna Ihezue, said: “Her actions amount to misconduct, and we cannot allow such behavior to go unchecked.”

    The committee’s findings revealed that the Chief Judge adjusted her date of birth from October 27, 1956 to October 27, 1958.

    Despite being invited, Ihezue said,  Chikeka refused to appear before the committee, which further solidified the case against her.

     “Her refusal to cooperate with the investigation only adds to the evidence of her misconduct,” said Rt. Hon. Clinton Amadi, a member of the adhoc committee.

    The Imo State House of Assembly has forwarded their recommendations to the National Judicial Council for further action. 

    “We are confident that the NJC will take appropriate action to address this serious matter,” said Hon. Bernard Ozoemenam, another member of the adhoc committee.

    “Falsification of age is a serious matter, and several judges and justices have been removed from office for this very reason,” said Comrade Ndubuisi Onyemaechi, Director of Investigations for the Civil Society Engagement Platform.

    Imo Assembly confirms six commissioner nominees

    The Imo House of Assembly on Wednesday, April 17, confirmed six additional commissioner nominees appointed by Governor Hope Uzodinma.

    Speaker Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe (APC-Ihitte Uboma) stated that the list of nominees was considered during an executive session on Tuesday before their appearance for screening.

    The House majority leader, Kanayo Onyemaechi (APC Owerri West), moved the motion for screening, which was seconded by a member representing Owerri Municipal, Clinton Amadi (LP).

    The confirmed nominees are Johncliff Nwadike, Ernest Ibejiako, Emeka Mbudem, Chief Ifeanyi Oru, Dr. Prosper Ohayagha and Chukwuemeka Okoronkwo

    Following the screening, Deputy Speaker, Hon. Amarachi Iwuanyanwu (APC-Nwangele) moved a motion for their confirmation, noting that they had satisfied all requirements.

    The motion was seconded by Clinton Amadi (LP-Owerri Municipal) after which the nominees were confirmed.

    This brings the total number of confirmed nominees to 22, as 16 nominees had been previously screened and confirmed by the House.

    Imo Assembly confirms four Commissioner Nominees

    The Imo State Assembly, on Friday screened and confirmed four additional Commissioner Nominees during a special plenary session.

    The nominees are, Mrs Ruby Emele, Mr Nathan Okoro, Mr Ikenna Elezieanya, and the former Attorney-general of the State, C.O.C. Akaolisa.

    The House majority Leader, Mr Kanayo Onyemaechi (APC Owerri West), moved the motion for screening, and was seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Princewill Ugochukwu Amuchie, (PDP-Aboh Mbaise).

    The nominees were introduced by their members in the House, and later approved by members after votes in favour of their confirmation.

    The speaker, Mr Chike Olemgbe (APC-Ihitte Uboma), declared the confirmation of the nominees, and directed the Clerk to forward the outcome to the office of the governor.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that 12 nominees had been previously screened and confirmed by the house on March 7, 2024.
