Imo agog as women celebrate Okorocha’s birthday

Vehicular and human movement was grounded Monday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, when thousands of women from across the state embarked on a solidarity march to celebrate the 55 birthday anniversary of the state governor, Rochas Okorocha.

The gaily dressed women who displayed placards with various inscriptions such as, ‘we thank God for the gift of Owelle’, ‘Owelle is a gift to humanity’, ‘Imo women celebrate the people’s Governor’, ‘Hurray our icon is 55’, ‘Imo women celebrate a selfless icon’ and ‘join us celebrate the architect of the new Imo’, among others, marched through major streets in the capital, chanting solidarity songs.

The procession resulted in traffic gridlock especially along Wetheral, Okigwe and Mbaise road for several hours, while security agents and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), battled to control vehicular movements.

Most prominent among the different women groups were the market women, beneficiaries of the state Free Education programme and female professionals from various disciplines who lauded the Imo governor for initiating projects and policies that have impacted positively on socio-economic status of women in the state.

Coordinator of the women and former Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Getrude Oduka, said the women decided to celebrate the governor for running a gender friendly administration that has improved the lot of women and children in the state.

According to her, the massive turnout of women for the procession was a confirmation that the women of the state are happy and grateful to the governor, adding that none of them were induced or coerced to attend.

She said, “we are here to celebrate a man that need to be celebrated, we are to celebrate an icon. For instance, he has given the entire children of Imo state an access to education, knowing full well that education is the key to life. To celebrate the architect of the new Imo, a man that has brought a lot of transformation to Imo State both in the areas of infrastructure and social development.

She continued that, “we are also celebrating a man that has the fear of God. So what Imo women are doing today is a triumphant entry into the birthday of the Governor”.

Receiving the women at the Government House, wife of the Governor, Nkechi Rochas Okorocha, commended the women for appreciating the efforts of the governor, adding that, the husband has always given priority to issues that affect women and children.

She also thanked them for wishing her husband well as he celebrates his 55 birthday anniversary, adding that the huge show of goodwill and solidarity by Imo women will certainly spur the governor to do more in his service to not only the women of the state but to the entire humanity.

In his speech, Governor Okorocha, who said he was overwhelmed by the outpour of love by the women of the state, pledged to continue strive to build a better society for the people of the state.

According to him, the occasion of his 55 birthday anniversary has given him the opportunity to reflect on God’s blessings, which he said propelled him to the height he is today.

He vowed to continue to alleviate the plight of the common people, especially women and children, through the provision of free education and other interventions, “I will continue with helping the less privileged, there is no slowing down. The free education programme of the Rochas Foundation has just been expanded to cover the whole Africa, where we are giving scholarship to five children each in fifty five African countries”.

On his journey so far, the governor stated firmly that, “in my 55 years on earth I have no regrets. I don’t regret any of my actions or decisions even though that people tend to misunderstand me sometimes. I am only grateful to God, there is nothing to regret in my 55 years on earth”.

Presidential aide condemns further extra judicial killing of Nigerians in South Africa

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora,  has condemned the further extra judicial killings of Nigerians living in South Africa.

This is contained in a statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Abdurrahman Balogun, released on Saturday in Abuja.

Dabiri-Erewa said the killing Kingsley Ikeri, another member of the Nigerian Union in that country at Vryheid town in Kwazulu Natal Province of South Africa on Aug. 30 was one death too many.

Ikeri, 27, was a businessman and native of Mbaitolu in Imo State and the second Imo indigene to be so killed in the last two weeks.

An extra judicial killing, also known as extrajudicial execution, is the killing of a person by governmental authorities without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal process.

She said in spite of all diplomatic talks between Nigeria and South Africa to put an early warning signal in place, “it doesn’t seem to be working”.

Dabiri-Erewa described the latest extra judicial killing of another Nigerian in South Africa as ” worrying and condemnable”.

She said that the latest gruesome killing of Ikeri by the Police in South Africa, is”unacceptable to the people and government of Nigeria”.

Dabiri-Erewa reiterated President Muhammadu Buhari’s calls to Nigerians to avoid crimes like drug peddling which attracts stiff penalties, sometimes death,

She noted that  the latest killing had increased the number of Nigerians killed  in South Africa through extrajudicial means in the last one year.

“The barbaric behavior of the perpetrators is not only unacceptable, but also calls for urgent attention by diplomatic authorities in Nigeria and South Africa”, she said.

Dabiri-Erewa urged the South African government to ensure that justice prevails by carrying out investigation and bring the culprit to book.

She reiterated her calls to Nigerians living abroad to always respect the laws of their host countries and be good ambassadors of Nigeria.

“My heart goes out to the families of the deceased  and pray God to grant the departed soul eternal rest”, the SSA prayed.

Bartholomew Eziagulu, Chairman of the Nigerian Union in the province, told the Newsmen on Friday that Mr Ikeri was allegedly tortured to death by the police.

He said the union’s investigations revealed that the police arrested the deceased and a friend on suspicion that they were carrying hard drugs.

He said while interrogating him, the police used plastic to cover his face to extort information from him.

“In the process, they suffocated the deceased. When the police took him to the hospital, he was confirmed dead,” he said.

Adetola Olubajo, the Secretary General of the union, said the national secretariat had been informed about the death of the Nigerian.

He said the body had informed appropriate Nigerian authorities and the police in South Africa.

Report has it that a senior Diplomat from the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg had visited Vryheid on a fact-finding mission.

Dabiri-Erewa  had in February during  a meeting in Abuja with South Africa High Commissioner, Mr Lulu Louis Mnguni said a total of 116 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa through extrajudicial means in the last two years.

Seven in 10 of the killings were carried out by the South African Police.

  • Traders agonise as Imo govt demolishes Eke-Ukwu market

Traders agonise as Imo govt demolishes Eke-Ukwu market

History was made in Owerri, the Imo State capital, recently with the relocation of the Eke-Ukwu Owerri market by the state government after decades of futile attempts.

Previous administrations made spirited efforts to relocate the market from its location at Douglas Road in the very heart of the capital city to make way for the expansion of the critical road to check traffic congestion and criminal activities.

But the efforts were resisted by traders who hid under clannish sentiments.

The battle line was once again drawn between Governor Rochas Okorocha and the traders in the ancient market when he announced his intention to relocate the market.

For more than two years, the statement engaged the Owerri indigenes who see the market as an ancestral heritage on the need to demolish the market. But they will not have any of that. To them the market is a sacred institution for which they are emotionally attached.

This defiant position, which was further strengthened by political incitement, emboldened the traders who vowed to resist any attempt to relocate them from the market.

Another reason advanced for the refusal by the people of Owerri to allow the relocation of the market,  was the easy monies made by the youths and elders through the collection of multiple levies in the market.

But the government had insisted that the market, which has spilled into the Douglas road, is constituting nuisance and security risks in the state capital.

The muscle flexing between the government and the Owerri leaders continued for about two years. To throw spanner in the wheels of the State government’s plan,  the Owerri indigenes, sought and obtained a Court Order restraining the government and any other person from trespassing into the market.

But at last the government ran out of patience with the adamant traders after they had ignored countless directives to evacuate their wares from the market.

So penultimate Saturday, before the break of dawn, the once sprawling market has been reduced to rumbles. Caterpillars roared, traders scurry in confusion as they dashed into the falling structures to salvage anything they can.

The atmosphere was tense, tears rained, traders recoil in anguish as they watched from afar as the rampaging machines devour the buildings.

When the government issued the last 48 hours directive to quit the market the traders as usual waved it off as one of the usual feeble attempts. Some of halfheartedly tried to evacuate their merchandise, while many others began the mother of all protest by barricading the entire market on Friday night and setting bonfire on the Douglas road.

But there was massive mobilization of security men including Mobile Policemen, Army, Department of State Security (DSS), as well as the State security outfit, Imo Security Network by the government in anticipation of violent resistance by the traders.

The exercise was led by the Deputy Chief of Staff (operation) to the governor, Engr. Kingdley Uju and heads of the various security agencies in the state.

Stranded traders, who could not evacuate their goods before the deadline given by the State government, defied the hail of bullets fired by the security operatives to disperse Owerri youths who had mobilized to resist the demolition exercise as they scurry to salvage their merchandise.

Scores sustained wounds, a ten-year-old boy, Somtochukwu Ibeanusi, was killed by stray bullet allegedly shot by the soldiers deployed to the market for the exercise.

As the caterpillars pulled down the shops, there was massive looting of goods as suspected hoodlums took advantage of the chaos to cart away millions of naira worth of goods, mostly expensive phones and other electronics.

Some of the traders, who were watching the demolition from afar, lamented that they were not given enough time to evacuate their goods before the demolition.

They accused the security men of colluding with hoodlums to loot their goods, adding that, “how can they be shooting at traders who are trying to evacuate their goods. As we speak, over five traders have sustained bullet wounds”.

The President-General of the market, Felix Ngoka, had during a press briefing on Friday, vowed that the traders will resist the demolition of the market with their lives, adding that they will not tolerate the defiance of an existing Court Order by the state government.

He also claimed that “our ancestors had warned sternly against the relocation of the market and we will not succumb to any pressure to relocate the market because if we do calamity will befall us. It is better we die resisting it”.

A trader, Mr. Uche Kamsochi, whose shop was among the first to be demolished, said

Meanwhile there were pockets of confrontations as protesting Owerri youths feebly tried to resist the exercise. They were tear gassed and those that were unlucky to be caught were beaten up and whisked away by waiting Police vans.

Meanwhile, some hoodlums attempted to loot the popular bureau de change popularly known as ‘Ama Hausa’, when they set it ablaze and chased away the bureau de change operators before soldiers arrived and cordoned off the entire area.

The state government described the exercise as peaceful and successful.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, the state government said: “The action was a peaceful one and with the relocation of the Market to a better area, the government will now go ahead to rebuild Douglas road and realize its lofty dream of making Owerri a befitting city”.

According to the statement, “this is to inform the general public that Ekeukwu Market Owerri has finally been moved from its current location at the centre of Owerri, the state capital, to its new location at Ohi near Owerri amid jubilation by patriotic residents. The relocation of the market is in line with the Urban Renewal programme of the state government.

“The market was moved Saturday morning and for almost two years the state government has announced its good intension to relocate the market to a more conducive site in the spirit of its Urban Renewal pursuit.

“The government has taken this noble action to equally recover Douglas road that connects the state with other neighbouring states which has remained a refuse dump for the traders in the market and to deal with once and for all the prevalent criminal activities in the area like robbery, cultism and kidnapping”.

It concluded that, “the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and the Rescue Mission Government which he heads, commend the traders and the people of the state in general for their cooperation and understanding. By the peaceful conduct of the traders, they have shown that they appreciate government’s intension to make Owerri and enviable state capital”.

Concerned Imo leaders want Okorocha to resign or impeached

    Alleges incompetence, serial blunder

A cross section of leaders from Imo state resident in Abuja under the auspices of Concerned Imo state Leaders on Tuesday asked the state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to immediately resign as a result of what they described as “clearly established leadership incompetence and serial blunder on the most elementary duties of governance”.

Addressing a news conference, the group also asked the state House of Assembly to activate the impeachment clause to unseat the governor if he fails to resign over his constant disregard for the court order and the recent demolition of the Ekeukwu market in Owerri, the state capital.

Spokesman of the group, Chief Sam Obaji accused the government of embarking on an unlawful, reckless and unprofitable demolition of the market, leaving four people, including a 10-year-old boy, Somtochukwu Igboanusi dead and several others wounded.

While also asking the state government to refrain from further violation of the court orders in respect of demolitions in the state, the group wants the President to institute a judicial commission of inquiry into the circumstances of the use of Armed forces personnel in this unlawful operation and ensure anyone who played a role in this unlawful deployment of the military to be prosecuted according to law.

They said: “As leaders in Imo state from various zones and across different political party lines, we are pained that at this time, that government should focus all resources and attaining on helping to alleviate economic hardship and youth unemployment, the government of Imo state is sending struggling families to severe poverty and misery through irresponsible governance.

“By refusing counsel, rejecting court injunctions and going ahead to carry out the demolition a market that has been in existence before independence in 1960, the Imo state government has provoked the anger of the people and threatened the peace of the state.

“As Chief Security Officer of the state, the governor ought to have realized that such wanton and reckless disregard sensibilities and interest of the people of the state in a democracy poses a grave challenge to national security at a time federal government is concerned about insecurity across the country.

“As leaders in imo state, we would ordinarily support ahh hold and well conceived urban renewal project in the state as we know the economic growth spill-offs of properly executed infrastructural development in the state. But what we are witnessing in Imo state is a self-interested and uncoordinated urban renewal project that consists largely of the demolition of private properties and transfer of recovered plots of lands to cronies for private development.

“The fact that the present demolition is carried out in reckless violation of a clear court order of Justice S.I. Okpara restraining the imo state government from the demolition of the market until a determination of the suit filed by the stall owners in the market.

“In as much as it is the priority of government to determine the direction of urban renewal, we believe that a responsive and responsible government would undertake a process that minimizes hardship and disruption to the economic and social life of the citizens.

“We are very angry at this uncivilized, reckless, thoughtless and disrespectful model of governance and warned that henceforth, we will be out to fight the governor to stop him from further destroying life and livelihood in imo state.”

However, the Imo state government has asked Nigerians to investigate the purported killing of a ten-year-old boy during the demolition exercise, pointing out that it is only by so doing that the truth can be known.

The government challenged those behind the rumoured killing of the 10-year-old Boy to tell the world where the incident took place, saying those with 2019 ambition are behind the rumoured killing, adding that such persons were leveraging on the relocation of the market to cause trouble in the state.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sam Onwuemeodo who dismissed the calls for the governor to resign said”we want to reiterate our demand that the reported death of a boy should be thoroughly investigated for the public to know the particular area the incident took place and the circumstances surrounding the reported death to reveal whether the whole story has anything to do with the movement of Ekeukwu Owerri Market or not.

“Again, now that the relocation has been completed, it is also left for those behind the rumours of killings, with some quoting six, some quoting five and some quoting three to tell their audience where the bodies of the rumoured dead persons are deposited and where their families can be located so that interested Nigerians can go into investigation on their own to ascertain whose Claim should be believed.

“Unfortunately, some people had taken such wicked rumours wholesale. And we are Challenging those behind the Claims to come forward to authenticate their claims. That is the way to unearth the truth. And where they fail to do that, they should cover their faces in shame.

“For the reported death of the ten-year old boy, those who reported the incident should have been gentle enough to mention the area the incident took place to let the world know whether it has anything to do with the demolition of Ekeukwu Owerri Market or not.”

  • Brilliant lad seeks scholarship

    Brilliant lad seeks scholarship

With 9As in the 2017 West Africa Examinations Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), 297 in the Universal Tertiary Education Examination (UTME), 1,380 in SAT, 105 in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), including admissions from four universities in the United States of America, the world seems to be at the feet of Chimemezue Clinton Ezeani.

But that may not be so as the Imo State-born teenager’s dream might remain just that due to his parents’ financial inability to see him through school.

Ezeani is therefore appealing to the government and kind-hearted Nigerians to support his dream to become a mechatronic engineer at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, where he has already been offered admission.

Mechatronics is a multi-disciplinary field of science that includes a combination of mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, telecommunications engineering, systems engineering and control engineering.

At present, three sons of the Ezeanis are attending universities in Ghana. Adding a fourth son to the bill would worsen the family’s financial burden.

Though offered a place at Harvard University, Chimemezue 16, said he chose Illinois Institute of Technology because he got a tuition-free scholarship there.

Even with the tuition-free scholarship, Chimemezue’s parents said they did not know how to raise funds so he does not forfeit his admission.

His father, Mr. Best Ezeani, a mechanical engineer, described the young lad as focused. Though he moved to secondary school from Primary Five, he passed all his subjects while in Primary Four, but his father prevented him from transiting to secondary school then.

“Chimemezue has always been focused right from his young age, so much that when he has an assignment at let us say 3pm, he leaves whatever he is doing once it is time to attend to that assignment. He does not get distracted,” he said.

Chimemezue credited God’s grace for his achievements, as well as hard work and dedication. He said he adopted the PDF (prayer, determination and focus) philosophy after excelling in his primary school education.

He said: “My PDF helped me a lot when I got to Faith Academy (his secondary school). I saw brains and people tougher than me, and after JSS 1 and 2 that the results weren’t so good, I adopted the PDF technique in JSS 3, which saw me emerge one of the best in the Junior WASSCE.

“I did not abandon my PDF in senior school. I also faced tough times as those with the best grades were put in a special class called Technical Class, followed by Science Class, Arts and Commercial Class. I almost dropped out of Technical Class due to subjects like Technical Drawings and Applied Electricity, which were hard, but my father encouraged me to continue despite my classmates dropping out of the class as they could not cope with the demands.”

Displaying Ezeani’s credentials to our reporter, his mother, Ifeoma, who has a Masters in Managerial Psychology from the University of Ibadan, said she and her husband agreed she would give up her career to care for their six sons full time.

Ezeani, who is the fourth of the six, said he loved to feature at social functions in school, and plays football, volleyball, basketball, with special interest as a budding football analyst.

A statement by Uzodinma in Abuja revealed that he gave the assurance in Owerri, Imo State while addressing party supporters on the Supreme Court judgment on the PDP leadership crisis.

He said that his immediate concern as the most senior public officer of the party in the state was to restore the unity that existed in the party across the country.

He said that he would also ensure that the party win elections in the state in 2019.

The lawmaker further declared his commitment to working relentlessly to actualising the goals of the party for the benefit of all.

“In my view, this is not the time for jubilation or for making show or claiming victory.

“This is a time for sober reflection, cooperation and forging unity to avoid the mistakes of 2011 and 2015.

“I want every leader to come together and work for the party above personal ambitions,’’ he said.

Uzodinma assured of his readiness to sacrifice his personal ambition for the victory of the party.

According to him: “the concern of stakeholders should be to first save the party and then later support whomever people want to represent them even if it means funding such a person.’’

  • Building collapse shakes Imo

    Building collapse shakes Imo

When a two-storey building crumbled in Owerri, the Imo State capital, killing eight persons, it was not only relatives of the dead and injured that agonised; the entire state was jolted. OKODILI NDIDI reports

Residents of the weather-beaten two-storey building adjacent to the Owerri Area Police Command Headquarters in Owerri, the Imo State capital, went to bed on Saturday night without any premonition of danger. They hoped to wake up to prepare for church and other social events, but that was not to be as the gigantic building caved in before dawn, trapping the entire occupants in a mass of debris and twisted metals.

No fewer than eight persons including two babies lost their lives in the ugly incident.

The sight and shrill cry for help coming from under the wreckage evoked emotions. Bystanders cried uncontrollably as rescue workers battled to pull out the trapped victims. Some of them were pulled out dead, while others, including two National Youth Service Corps members were exhumed from the debris unconscious.

Officials of the Red Cross Society and the State Emergency Management Agency had a herculean task combing the dusty debris searching for occupants of the building.

The building is the fifth to collapse in the state capital in the last one month.

The victims were taken to hospital for treatment, while efforts were on by aid workers to rescue other trapped occupants.

The edifice, which is owned by GOVONS Veterinary Centre, a retail outlet for animal feeds and other agricultural products, according to sources, was originally designed to be a one-storey building before the owner added an additional floor.

The state governor, Rochas Okorocha, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Kingsley Uju, were at the scene for an assessment. The visibly agitated governor warned against the use of non-professionals and substandard materials in the construction of buildings in the state. He lamented that the non-engagement of engineers and other related professionals and the use of inferior materials remain the major causes of building collapse. The governor assured that his government would look into the cause of incessant building collapse in the state, regretting that before now a few other houses had also collapsed. He advised those who want to build to engage the services of professionals and ensure the use of quality materials, stressing, “People should stop building on dredges, gutters and even soak-aways”.

He said, “I was shocked to hear of this building collapse around this area of the city, precisely along Stadium and Egbu Road. In this disaster, six people were rescued while four persons were confirmed dead. I learnt that Owerri Capital Development Authority has initially sealed this structure against further work but the landlord stubbornly carried on with the construction, adding an additional floor to the existing storey-building.

“The next building which is also owned by the same landlord, suffers the same fate. So, I have ordered that the two buildings go down without delay to safeguard against further occurrence and also to serve as a deterrent to overzealous landlords and contractors who are involved in this type of mess”.

Speaking further, he said, “The state government henceforth will set up building departments separate from OCDA for standards and regulation. Qualified engineers are henceforth to sample, test and supervise every structure and their construction in the city and suburbs. We as a government can no longer fold our hands and watch landlords and unqualified engineers waste or endanger the lives of our people. All buildings must be inspected and given certification.

“Owerri being the fastest growing city in Nigeria is a good development but that is no reason for our people to build anyhow or anywhere for safety reasons. One of the survivors lost a child and I commend the commissioner of police and the Red Cross for their early intervention. Government will strive to see avenues to find the survivors a means of livelihood while we pray that God grants the dead victims a sweet repose”.

A woman and her husband, who were rescued, said three of their children were trapped.

Narrating their ordeal, the couple, who didn’t give their names, said, “We were still sleeping around 4.30 am when we were woken up by a loud sound like something was breaking and that was followed by another sound which was louder than the first one. It was then that I tried to check what was happening and before I could get to the door, the floor of our living room caved in and we fell into the other floor and the whole place was covered by dust and we could not see again.

“It was so dark that after the building went down completely, we could not see anyone, I was trying to move to look for my children and wife before I heard her crying when I tried to move over to where her cry was coming from, I discovered I could not move. That was how I squatted there until I was rescued. At last my children were dug out, the youngest one died on the spot, while the other two were taken to the hospital”.

Another lucky survivor, Uche Muruakor, a civil servant, said he was awake the time the building collapsed.

He said he was supposed to catch an early morning bus to Kaduna to see his elder sister, I was not sleeping when the building collapsed, I was awake about to begin my morning devotion when I heard the big sound and the blocks started collapsing before the building finally caved in.

“We were trapped in the debris for over five hours before the rescue workers came I was almost choking before I was pulled out. It was a horrible experience, I never knew I was coming to out alive. The luck I had was that my wife and kids travelled two days ago so were not around when the building collapsed. The only thing I lost is my property I thank God I am alive”.

Decrying the increase in building collapse in the state, the Nigerian Society of Engineers and Nigerian Institute of Architects have urged the governor to enforce standard in the building industry.

The professionals also called for integrity test to be conducted in all the building in the state suspected to be substandard in other to avoid future reoccurrence.

The State Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Mr Emeka Ugoanyawu blamed the growing cases of building collapse on use of quacks.

He also blamed state regulatory agencies and Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) for failing to supervise contractors.

It will be recalled that a three-storey building still under construction collapsed in Obinze Owerri West LGA in July 7, while another three-storey building collapsed in Umuguma Owerri West LGA on July 8 respectively.

Also on July 9, one-storey building collapsed in Oforola Owerri West and killing three people, while a hotel still u-der construction collapsed in Airport road Owerri North a day after that.

But the NSE boss urged the governor to summon emergency meeting of building professionals and proposed adequate sanctions for failed contractors.

Also speaking, State Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Architects Mrs Ndidi Okoro, said government has not lived up to its expectations by monitoring standard of building being erected in the state.

Okoro also a Fellow of NIA said a preliminary investigation showed that the building collapsed due to substandard materials used for the building and engagement of non-professionals.

“We have lost so many lives in less than three months because contractors have continued to compromise standard and government has failed to supervise them.

“We will soon come out with a stand to this whole problem as a group and we hope that government will implement our recommendations,” she said.

Secretary Nigerian Institute of Builders in Imo Mr Andy Osuagwu, blamed regulatory agencies and urged government to employ more professional builders to enable regulatory agencies perform the duty effectively.

“OCDA does not have enough professionals, how can they do the job well. What we are suffering in the building industry today is quackery and until the problem is addressed, we will still be where we are”.

Meanwhile, a Corps member who was among the victims rescued unconscious has finally died after a successful surgery.

Ohakim in quiet celebration at 60

When it comes to landmark anniversaries among the political and social elite, a few things are expected: a lot of noise, elaborate red carpets, swanky and expensive shindigs and lots of merriment. For former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, however, that was not the case as he celebrated his 60th birthday.  He opted for a low-key celebration.

When the news filtered in that the winsome husband of Chioma Ohakim planned to restrict the celebration to a simple thanksgiving service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro Abuja, to be followed by a dinner with his circle of family members and close friends, not a few heads dropped in disappointment.

The chief executive of Imo State between 2007 and 2011 has been very much out of the spotlight since he relinquished power. He is known to prefer spending time with his family and would rather engage in marathon prayer sessions than attend fancy parties.
