  • Imo: Madumere may serve as running mate to Uzodinma

•Flays refusal to restore security, alleges threat to life
•Owerri calm as Okorocha’s loyalists maintain silence

There are indications yesterday that the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, has been pencilled to serve as the running mate to Senator Hope Uzodinma, the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election in the State.

A top party official in the state told The Nation that “the decision to pair the two was part of the party’s diligent plan to ensure that every interest is adequately taken care of.”

The APC official, who did not want to be named, said the party in the state is sure that the two can work together. In the primary election presided over by Ahmed Gulak, Uzodinma garnered a total of 423,895 votes to top the list, while Madumere came second with a total of 128,325 votes.

Also, according to the source, the party leaders reasoned that “Since Uzodinma hails from Imo West Senatorial District (Orlu), the same zone with Rochas Okorocha and Madumere hails from Imo East Senatorial District (Owerri Zone), pairing the two will neutralise any negative campaign against the party as it will also soothe the concerns of the Owerri zone.”

As at yesterday afternoon, supporters of both Uzodinma and Madumere were still waiting eagerly in Owerri for their return to Imo from Abuja. Our source said the two had been in Abuja for some time now, working together to ensure that nothing went wrong and that they are expected to come back to the state together any moment from now.

The Nation noted yesterday that notwithstanding APC’s final submission of Uzodinma’s name as the party’s governorship candidate, Owerri, the state capital, was particularly calm. It is not yet clear why Okorocha loyalists, who have been vocal since the political horse-trading began, refrained yesterday from responding to the development.

But a statement from the Office of the Deputy Governor, by Madumere’s Chief Press Secretary, Uche Onwuchekwa, yesterday alleged threat to the life of the Deputy Governor.  The statement regretted that 12 members of staff in the Deputy Governor’s office were suddenly posted out in October through a memo with reference number HIS/S. 29/S.1/t.3/1/807, signed on behalf of the Head of Service by Emole K. O.

Alleging that “some members of the domestic staff of the Deputy Governor were approached to be used as agents of death to poison the Deputy Governor,” the office said in the statement, “we wish to state categorically that the sudden posting of the operational staff of the Deputy Governor is a careful plot to compromise the security of Madumere.”

  • The gods in Ogun, Imo and Zamfara

In V.S. Naipaul’s heartrending comic A House for Mr Biswas, man’s quest for autonomy from even those feeding him is laid bare. Mr Biswas rebels against his in-laws, whose food he eats and house he lives in. He always wants a house of his own. That, for me, is man in his original state. Imagine what will happen when he now has power and money! The last thing he will like is to take dictation from a yesterday man. He will be eager to show who is in charge and that is where violence comes in when the yesterday man refuses to accept his new status.

It is for this reason that I do not understand why Governors Ibikunle Amosun, Rochas Okorocha and AbdulAziz Yari are hell-bent on deciding who will succeed them. These men are going about this quest as if without it, their tomorrow is ruined!

Although Amosun has said he will not leave APC, there are reports about some of his men declaring for one colourless party, where they hope to rock the All Progressives Congress (APC) boat. My first reaction when this filtered in is that politicians do not learn. Amosun’s predecessor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, tried it and it did not work. During the last general election, Daniel’s predecessor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, was against Amosun and he pitched his tent with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where he hoped to truncate Amosun’s governorship bid. He failed woefully.

Yari’s disagreement with other tendencies in Zamfara over his quest to determine his successor is almost causing APC heartache. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said primaries were not done and candidates’ list would not be accepted. Now, the party’s fate will be determined by the law court.

The case in Imo, where Okorocha is the lord, is also hanging on court pronouncement. Okorocha wants his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, to succeed him and this has turned the party in the state apart. Because of this Okorocha has joined the swelling group against party chair Adams Oshiomhole.

At the outset of the Imo madness, some leaders of the party ganged up against Okorocha and almost took over the party from him until he was rescued by the national secretariat. The crisis has led to a situation where the state has no deputy governor. The House of Assembly removed Eze Madumere as deputy governor, but a court has stalled the installation of a replacement.

These men cannot afford to rock the boat. What further leaves Amosun and Okorocha with no choice but to work for the APC is their senatorial quest.

For their sake, I will repeat a story I once told on this space about the futility of giving power to a man and believing he can be controlled from behind. It was told by a governor to a few of us when he was trying to transmute from the National Assembly to the Government House.

This is the story: The president of the country at the time had contacted him to look for a suitable candidate to be governor in their state. The candidate eventually chosen was not from the zone where power should rotate. By some magic, he was made to originate from the zone to which power was meant to go. A chieftaincy title and a massive house later, he became a member of the zone. He was grateful to the senator for working him to the answer.

All that however ended immediately he got power. On the day he was confirmed as the governor-elect, he asked the senator to see him. During their meeting, they had altercations and the angry senator wanted to walk out on him and he screamed: “You are walking out on your governor.” Their relationship was sour throughout his tenure and remains sour till this day.

Perhaps I should draw the attention of Amosun, Yari and Okorocha to what is going on in Akwa Ibom and Kano states. In Akwa Ibom, Senator Godswill Akpabio, as an outgoing governor some four years ago, bulldozed his way to install Udom Emmanuel as his successor. It did not take long before they started disagreeing on key issues. They managed to keep it under wrap, but it is all out in the open now and the battle line is drawn. There are fears of violence.  Not long ago, Nsima Ekere, who is APC candidate in the state, was suspected to have been targeted for assassination when a bullet pierced the roof into his home.

In Kano, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who uprooted all obstacles to install Abdullahi Ganduje as his successor, is in a dilemma now. He has left the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and plotting how to ensure Ganduje’s second term bid fails.

These gods can also learn from Sokoto State, where Governor Aminu Tambuwal and his predecessor, Aliyu Wamakko, are now sworn enemies. Wammako, who fought off all opposition to make him governor, is a serving APC senator. Both men have divided the state. The House of Assembly is divided. The political atmosphere is tensed.  After Tambuwal’s failed presidential bid, he is back in the governorship race.

These gods of our time can also learn from ex-Governor Peter Obi, who I believe till this day, regrets the day he supported Willie Obiano to be governor of Anambra State. Within months of Obiano taking over power, they were at each other’s jugular. Obi did not like the way Obiano was spending the money he was just happy saving when there were things which needed money spent on!

Another example these gods need to ponder over is Chimaroke Nnamani, who may for the rest of his life feel bad about supporting Sullivan Chime to succeed him as Enugu State governor. Chime’s support for Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi obviously went awry too, if not he will not be in the APC now.

My final take: These gods in Imo, Ogun and Zamfara are in power but do not understand power because even if they have their ways now there is no guarantee that the puppets they think they are trying to install will not turn against them. Okorocha may be lucky with his son-in-law, but even filial obedience is still not foolproof! They need to be told that they are not Sango and no one will honour them by pouring red oil at their feet.

  • In Imo, regrets for ignoring flood warnings

Despite repeated dire warnings of flooding, seven communities in Imo State have been submerged. Now, they regret not evacuating, reports OKODILI NDIDI

Just as Noah’s  warning of an impending flood went unheeded by the inhabitants of the earth, the National Emergency Management Agency’s  dire forecast in seven flood-prone communities in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta Local Government of Imo State was also ignored.

Residents of Ossemoto, Oguta, Eziorsu, Orsuobodo, Opuowa, Mmahu and Etekwuru dismissed the timely warning. They had derided NEMA for the prediction, preferring to stay back in their ancestral communities and face whatever fate would bring their way.

Some of them even took to appeasing the gods of the sea to prevent the sea from surging. Others argued that they have not committed any abomination to warrant the wrath of the sea.

But today, the predictions of NEMA have painfully come to pass, the communities have been flooded after the sea overflowed its bankS.

Homes and farmlands have been submerged. The people were not prepared despite several warnings.

The agency had severally warned the communities to quit over unusual rise in the sea level, which it had observed.

It predicted that farmlands in the seven communities will be submerged by the overflowing rivers in the area, noting that the Orachi River and Oguta Lake have both risen to alarming levels.

Mr. Evans Ugoh, Head of Imo/Abia Operations Office of NEMA who led officials of the agency to assess sea level in the flood-prone communities observed then that both Oguta Lake and Orashi River have risen above normal levels and portends great threat to the communities but

    the warning was not heeded.

He had submitted that following the persistent rise in the sea level, a possible flooding may occur.

“You must continue to monitor the movement of the sea constantly and report to us where necessary for immediate action,” he said. “NEMA has already strategised with other disaster stakeholders on the development for immediate response in case of any emergency.

“Prone communities must be alert and always monitor the movement of sea in their area and report same to the agency promptly for immediate action”.

He added that the Oguta Lake,  a tributary of Orashi River has strong connection with the River Niger and has in recent times posed serious danger to  residents along the river bank.

He said NEMA was taking serious measures to avoid a reoccurrence of the 2012 flooding, saying, “Residents in the area must be ready to quit to avoid major casualties, should there be any flooding”.

In a similar vein, the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mr. Mustapha Maihaja had warned that movement of sea must be constantly monitored by flood prone communities.

He said cases of unusual rise in the sea level should be immediately reported to disaster outfits for immediate action.

Maihaja said the advice to monitor sea level became necessary, following the recent flood alert raised by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

The NEMA boss assured his readiness to strengthen the agency and disaster management to meet international standard.

He said he has introduced new approach to disaster management, adding that disaster management should be seen as every body’s business.

He urged government agencies to improve on the sensitization of Nigerians on the recent flood alert by NIMET.

Meanwhile, the victims are counting their loses, for Mr. Iwueze Chibuzor, who narrated how his family of four narrowly escaped being drowned by the flood, the damage is irreversible.

He regretted not heeding the timely warning by NEMA, adding that, “if I had known I should have relocated my family before the flood but we all thought that it was not going to happen but that fateful night, we had already gone to bed when I heard a usual sound as water gushed

into our house through every available space and within a twinkle of an eye, the entire house was flooded.

“I had to wake my wife and we carried our children and waded through the flooded streets, we could not take our property, so we came out with nothing and now we are starting life from the beginning. My crops were destroyed after my farm was submerged”.

Madam Ceicilia Ikoku, a petty trader, lost all her merchandise in the flood, “if I had known, I should have left the village after we were warned that the flood was coming but part of the reason I did not leave was because I don’t have any other place to go and I was also

wondering what will become of my farm and business if I leave my community”.

“Sokoto, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe and Zamfara states are at the bottom of the National Human Development Index, according to the National Human Development Report 2018 released by the United Nations Development Programme.”

The UNDP explained that HDI represents a geometric average of normalised indices for each of the three dimensions of health, knowledge and standard of living.

  • Nwosu beats Uzodinma, Madumere to clinch Imo APC guber ticket

Former Chief of Staff to the Imo State Governor, Uche Nwosu, on Saturday, defeated Senator Hope Uzodinma and the state Deputy Governor, Eze  Madumere to emerge the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship
candidate for the 2019 general election.
Nwosu garnered a total of 269,428 votes to beat his closest rival, Engr. Chucks Ololo, who polled 6,428 votes in the rescheduled governorship primary.
Uzodinma had 2,729, while Madumere polled 2,646 votes to take the 4th and 5th positions respectively.
A total of nine aspirants contested for the party’s ticket, they include Sir George Eche, Chucks Ololo, Peter Gbujie, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Uche Nwosu, Chris Nlemoha, Jude Ejiogu, Eze Madumere and  Chima Anozie.
Nwosu was returned as the governorship candidate yesterday at about 3:20am, by the Governorship Primary Election Committee headed by Ibrahim Agbabiaka alongside 11 others.
There were reports that some of the aspirants boycotted the exercise but, Agbabiaka while declaring the results said that all the nine governorship aspirants participated in the primary election.
Nwosu in his speech shortly after being declared winner, dedicated the victory to all the aspirants, adding that it was victory for the party and the state.
He enjoined the other aspirants to work with the party to ensure victory at the general election, stating that, “we are all winners and we should come together and prepare for the main election. I will soon commence consultations with my brothers that contested with me to see ways we can work together to give our party victory”.

  • Gulak lied on kidnap claim, says Election panel Secretary

Secretary of the Imo State Governorship Primary Election Committee Secretary Henry Idahagbon has described as “embarrassing” the claim by the Chairman of the Committee, Ahmed Gulak that there was attempt to kidnap members of the Committee.

Idahagbon told reporter that members of the Committee were not under any form of threat or intimidation in Imo State, adding that the claims by Gulak were not only false but demeaning.

According to him, members of the Committee were shocked over the action of the Chairman of the Committee, who absconded without their knowledge and went to Abuja to announce results when the primary election had not been held.

He said: “I was with Gulak in his hotel room 701 at the Rockview hotel until 1am, when I went to my room; there was no inkling that he was going to escape. I am surprised that a Lawyer like him could joke with such serious allegation like kidnapping. Let me make it known that we were not under any form of threat or intimidation at any time in Imo State.

“What happened was in the morning, I went to knock at Gulak’s room and there was no response, I went to the room of another member of the Committee to look for him but he was not there. We all started looking for him to no avail before we learnt from the porters that he has left the hotel. For the records, we there was no attempt to kidnap any member of the Committee”.

He continued that, “we were still in the hotel when the governor came and told us that Gulak had escaped to Abuja to announce fake result”.

  • APC postpones Imo, Lagos States Governorship primary elections

… Inaugurates 21-member National Convention Committee

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed its governorship primary elections for Imo and Lagos states to Monday, Oct.1.

Mr Adams Oshiomhole, the party’s National Chairman announced this on Saturday in Abuja, while inaugurating the party’s Governorship Primary Election Committee and the Presidential National Convention Committee.

Oshiomhole, who attributed logistics for postponing the primary election in the two states, said it would hold on Sunday (tomorrow) in other states of the federation as earlier scheduled.

“We have decided to postpone the governorship primary election in Imo and Lagos states to Monday Oct.1, even though it is public holiday.

“There is nothing in the law that says we cannot conduct our party affairs on the day of public holidays.

“We are sure that we will be able to rectify logistic challenges between now and the end of tomorrow, “ Oshiomhole said.

He added that the party`s secretariat would get to the committees through its chairmen to hand over documents and all materials including ballot papers and result sheets they would use for the primary election.

He further added that no fewer than 177 governorship aspirants were currently jostling to get the party’s tickets to contest governorship election in 29 states.

He thanked the committee members for honouring the party’s invitation at short notice and for accepting to serve it and the nation generally.

The APC national chairman stressed that members of the committee had a duty to ensure that the core values of the party was adhered to, adding that they should remain neutral while carrying out their assignments.

He added that the party’s leadership was doing everything possible to ensure proper security in states of the federation where the governorship primaries would be held.

Oshiomhole said the presidential national convention committee must reflect the ray of the future with gender balance.

“We want to organise a convention that is different. We want a convention that goes beyond electioneering, “ he said.

He added that the national convention should discuss the Nigeria agenda, issues of governance, development and economic issues as well as social choices.

“Let us disagree and agree within that convention in addition to confirming the presidential candidate and maybe amend any section of the Constitution that we might want to.

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state, who is the chairman of the 21-member presidential national convention committee, thanked the party`s leadership for the opportunity to serve.

“I thank you for giving us the opportunity to participate in laying the foundation for our 2019 electoral victory, because if you see the quality of the foundation, you will know how the building will be.

“The foundation you have laid today is so solid that I have no doubt that we will succeed in 2019 election, “ he said.

He stressed that the committee would not let the party down and assured that it would do its best to ensure that the party`s victory in 2019, was secured.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while Kashim Shettima would serve as the committee Vice Chairman, Hadiza Bala Usman would serve as its Secretary.

Other members of the committee are Babatunde Fashola, Audu Ogbeh, Nasiru El-Rufai, Rochas Okorocha, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, Kayode Fayemi, Abubakar Bagudu and Mohammed Abubakar.

Godwin Obaseki, Simon Lalong, Sen. Emma Anosike, Hajiya Hauwa Sule, Timipre Sylva, Mr Sharon Ikeazor, Dr Ramatu Tijani, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Stella Okotete and Paulen Tallen are all members of the committee.

  • APC Primary: Buhari scores 697,532 votes in Imo

President Muhammadu Buhari,  garnered 697,532 votes in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential primary in Imo State.

Buhari was returned unopposed by the APC card carrying members who turnout in large number for the exercise.

The State Returning Officer, Chief Charles Amadi, announced the result after collation at the Nick Banquet Hall, Owerri.

The Governor, who addressed APC faithful shortly after announcing the result, said that President Buhari “remains the best option for the Southeast and her people in the 2019 election compared to others jostling for the same position in other political parties”.

He assured that the President will “win in the entire Southeast in 2019″.

According to him, “in the 2011 election, the PDP people were able to rig and write fictitious figures to misrepresent the facts on ground. But in the 2015 election, the PDP also manipulated the results of the South – East states to portend dislike and resentment for Muhammadu Buhari. But we fought them to standstill to ensure that they did not perpetuate their heinous act of writing unrealistic results. Hence, the Southeast votes ensured an even spread for the emergence of Mr. President”.

He continued that, “what we are doing today is the APC Presidential Primary for President Muhammadu Buhari. It is also very clear that the President is Contesting the 2019 Presidential election on the platform of APC as the sole candidate of the party. But like the Constitution approves, whether it’s one person or more than one candidate, the electorate must exercise their franchise.

“So we have come to show our love towards him by queuing to vote for him massively. We’re doing this to know the number of the Party members from each ward that are approving his candidature for 2019 presidential election. So, I’m here with my people to assure President Muhammadu Buhari that Imolites are with him come 2019”.

The governor added further that, “I am very happy for the large turnout as people had trooped out in their large numbers to ensure victory for our Party, APC and our presidential flag-bearer, President Muhammadu Buhari and also to assure him that APC is the Party on ground in Imo State.”

Announcing the result, Amadi said President Buhari garnered six hundred and ninety seven thousand, five hundred and thirty-two votes out of the nine hundred and forty-four, eight hundred and forty-three registered members.

  • Buhari condoles with family of Justice Ogbuagu

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with the family of the deceased and the National Judicial Council over the passing of Justice Francis Ikechi Ogbuagu.

The President, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, commiserated with friends and professional colleagues of the late jurist, who served variously in the Federal High Courts in Imo and Abia, before rising to the Appeal and Supreme Court.

He believed the legal luminary served diligently, and contributed immensely to the strengthening of the judiciary, which remains the bastion of Nigeria’s democracy.
