  • Relief as Imo bridge repair starts

It was a huge relief for residents of Amaruru, an agrarian community in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State as work starts on the collapsed bridge which cut off the community from other parts of the state and neighbouring Anambra State, where they sell their farm produce and buy other household needs.

The community was thrown into anguish after the only bridge linking the community with other villages, especially the Nnewi, the commercial hub of Anambra state, which is the mainstay of economic and social activities in the otherwise sleepy community caved in under the weight of a truck conveying cement.

The long bridge believed to have been constructed over 60 years ago through communal effort, finally caved in, after several years of disrepair. The bridge according to the villagers, has been given signs of imminent collapse, but all efforts to get the requisite authorities to intervene, were all abortive.

The plight of the community had attracted the attention of the state House of Assembly and subsequently a delegation of Lawmakers was sent to have on the spot assessment of the collapsed bridge and proffer solution.

But despite the powerful delegation by the state Lawmakers and engineers from the state Ministry of Works, the hope of repair of the collapsed bridge remained elusive three months after.

But just as the people continued to grapple with the enormous challenge occasioned by the collapse of the bridge, almost losing hope of any intervention in the near future, sucour came the way of the people.

A philanthropist Ozodinobi O. Nnamachie, an engineer, after a visit to the bridge volunteered to sponsor palliative repair on the bridge pending when a permanent structure will be built.

The people are relieved and socio-economic activities have bounced back and the community is once reconnected with their friends and relatives in other villages.

Nze Cornel Isiuzo, a farmer, who had bemoaned the continued neglect of the broken bridge by relevant authorities, commended the efforts of the philanthropist, adding that his intervention has saved the community from harrowing ordeal.

Isiuzo, who said he was barely nine years old when the bridge was constructed, lamented that the community union may not be able to raise the required amount of money to fix the bridge on time, adding that, “it was a big challenge, we were trapped, we could not take our farm produce to the market and most of our women trade at the Nnewi market but we thank God that it is over now”.

He said, “The entire community was at a loss over how to go about it because we have written several letters to the state government but nothing tangible came out of it. Now that the bridge has finally collapsed, we hope the state government will come to our aid”.

Another community leader, Chief Stanley Ukammor, described the gesture as divine, adding that since the collapse of the bridge, the community has been going through untold hardship.

He said, “We did not know how to go about it and the money needed to fix it or build another bridge is enormous and beyond the capacity of the villagers, who are mostly peasant farmers and retirees. So we just resigned to fate and praying that intervention could come from anywhere, we are happy today that God has answered our prayers”.

We are appealing to the state governor, Rochas Okorocha to order immediate palliative repairs on the bridge to free us from the current plight”.

He however lamented that the community is facing another imminent danger of flooding as the Orashi River is already overflowing its banks since the collapse of the Bridge, “we are also confronted by another challenge that need to be quickly addressed, the Orashi River is overflowing the banks and the implication is that our farmlands will be flooded and our entire crops will be destroyed. Something need to be done and urgently too”.

  • Abductors of Imo musician demand N5m ransom

Abductors of popular Owerri based musician and high life meastro, Ugo Stevenson, also known as ‘Ndaa Chineke’, have demanded five million naira ransom.
Another well known entertainer, Izunna Obiakor, was also kidnapped a forth night ago.
Stevenson, winner of the 2008 Nigeria Music Awards  was kidnapped around the World Bank area of Owerri, while going home.
The wife who spoke with our correspondent said that the kidnappers had established contact with her and demanded N5m to release him.
According to her, she was contacted on phone two days after the husband was abducted.
She said “the kidnappers have contacted me. They are demanding N5m as ransom for his release. My husband was equally allowed to speak with me. I told them how it is with my husband and family currently. I told them that we don’t even have N10,000 and they asked me to contact his friends.
“I am therefore calling on his friends to help secure my husband’s freedom. They should not allow him suffer and die.He is just an entertainer who has spent all his life making people happy. He has offended no one .His friends and the general public should come to my husband’s rescue.”

“We are working to ensure that the kidnap victim is rescued alive, unhurt and the kidnappers arrested without delay”.
  • IMO IMPEACHMENT PLOT: LAWMAKERS CRY OUT

    •Suspended lawmakers cry out

The recently suspended members of Imo State House of Assembly have cried out that they were being harassed and threatened by faceless individuals to support the plans to impeach the Deputy Governor of the state, Prince Eze Madumere, or face severe consequences.

Two of the affected lawmakers, who spoke to The Nation on telephone at the weekend, Nkenna Nzeruo and Ifeanyi Nnataraonye, said since their sudden suspension, which they described as illegal, they have been receiving threatening telephone calls from numbers their ‘True Caller’ facility could not identify.

Nzeruo John Nkenna, the lawmaker representing Oru East, told The Nation on Friday that threats and harassment have forced him to go into hiding. As he puts it: “I am speaking with you from a hidden place. I have been into hiding for some time now because of the repeated threats through telephone calls that cannot be traced. Besides threats over telephone, there have been constant unusual movements at night in and around my compound,” he said.

Another suspended lawmaker, Ifeanyi Nnataraonye, who spoke to The Nation over the phone yesterday, said he has also received threatening calls from faceless individuals. “They started harassing me in Abuja, at the National Convention venue, where thugs descended on me and my colleague at the House, Lawman Duruji, physically beat me up at the open convention venue while President Muhammadu Buhari was making his welcome speech. It was unbelievable. What is even more stunning is that after the convention and the illegal suspension on the floor of the State House of Assembly in Owerri, the same lawmaker, Lawman Duruji, who beat me up, was made the Chairman of the Committee the Speaker set up to try our case. As you know, the committee was asked to do its investigation and submit the report last Thursday. But as we speak today (Saturday), there has been no invitation from the committee, no telephone call, no contact of any kind on the alleged un-parliamentary conduct. Instead the House simply gave itself a long vacation. This act is clearly unconstitutional, illegal and unacceptable. We will go to court to seek interpretation of the development and justice. My worry is, does the Speaker of the House have the right to suspend a lawmaker who has not been charged of any known offence?”

Nnataraonye also said some faceless individuals have been threatening him since his suspension. “Although nobody has been apprehended physically, I am being harassed by some unknown individuals through threatening telephone calls. They use telephone numbers whose identity my True Caller facility cannot display,” he said, adding, it is easy for anyone to know where the pressure is coming from. How come a lawmaker who beat up a colleague in the presence of thugs is not suspended but four other lawmakers whose offences cannot be described are the ones suspended?”

Since June 27, when the state Assembly suspended the four lawmakers for alleged “un-parliamentary” conducts,” there has been political tension in the state as some observers have linked the action to the alleged impeachment of the Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere.

The suspended lawmakers are Chiji Collins (Isiala Mbano); Ifeanyi Nnataraonye (Mbaitoli); Uche Oguwuike (Ikeduru) and Ikenna Nzeruo (Oru West).

While announcing the suspension, the Speaker, Acho Ihim, had also appointed Lawman Duruji (Ehime Mbano) to chair a disciplinary committee to investigate the matter.

  • Averting the gathering storm in Imo

Sir: Imo State sits at the heart of Igboland and is usually referred to as the Eastern Heartland. But recently, the state has been in the news not for its rich Igbo cultural heritage or her great human and material resources but for the wrong political reasons.

Whether it is about erection of effigies of foreign leaders or politics of nepotism and exclusions, the truth is that all is not well with the state. With the palpable ominous signs in the political ambience of the state, caution should be the watch-word.

In Nigeria, intra-party crises are always carpeted as family affairs but it is yet to be seen how APC will handle its current myriads of political intransigencies and the corollary parallel political structures in many states.

Either as a way of punishing the incumbent governor of Imo  State who had  denounced the tenure elongation of the out-gone National Working Committee of the party or an attempt to stop the imposition of his son-in-law on the party, some party members became willing tools used to humiliate him.

In Nigeria, it is an acceptable norm since the inception of the fourth republic that heads of the executive arm from the ruling party also double as leaders of their parties whether at the state or the federal level. But in what was generally seen as an aberration in Imo State, the incumbent governor was even denied the privilege of either knowing the venue of the said congress or sighting the electoral materials.

This situation informed the press briefing by the governor with heads of security operatives in the state where he declared that there was no congress in the state. But the party’s appeal panel ignored all that and went ahead to affirm the congress and the controversial party officers were sworn in amid all legal encumbrances.

But the outcome of the party’s national convention has left no one in doubt about who still calls the shot in the party. It was therefore too early and of course infantile for some people to have boasted that they have washed the governor’s hands from the politics of the state.

Though with his imperfections and indiscretions, the governor, Rochas  Okorocha would still remain a reliable bridge which the party would find very useful to access not only Imo State but the entire geo-political zone.

The governor may have felt betrayed as those he had fed ended up biting his finger, but what makes great leaders is not the pound of flesh taken from the offenders but how much they are willing to forgive.

While vengeance is sweet when an opportunity presents itself but the late anti-apartheid legend -Nelson Mandela taught the world an important lesson as he forgave those who incarcerated him for more than a quarter of the century.

The reconciliation committee set up by the state government elated many of us who are friends of the state. But the gale of suspension now blowing against perceived enemies in the state assembly and the rumoured plot of impeachment of the deputy governor should be handled cautiously.

Yes, this is obviously about the next election but one should not be oblivious of the next generation. The current callous blood-letting in the country should call for restraint as the hapless citizens would be at the receiving end of all these needless political tussles.

We still hope that reasons will prevail over vengeance and true reconciliation would engender the much needed peace in the state.

  • ‘Araraume will get it right in Imo’

Chairman of the Imo State Disabled Community Samuelson Emeharibe has said the actions of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in truncating the victory of Senator Ifeanyi Araraume in 2007 is the reason Imo State has not had a purposeful leadership.

Emeharibe spoke when he led a delegation of his community to the Araraume Destiny Organisation Office to show solidarity and declare their support for Araraume’s governorship ambition.

He said: “The decision of former President Obasanjo to stop Senator Araraume truncated the charter of equity in the state, as Araraume would have finished his term in office and handed over to Owerri zone.

“That decision allowed unprepared leaders to occupy the Government House, hence the situation in Imo today.”

According to him, the disable community is behind Araraume’s aspiration owing to his competence, sagacity, experience, and outstanding record as Senator, as well as his philanthropy.

Emma Nwosu, who spoke on Araraume’s behalf, said the senator is a friend of the physically- challenged persons.

“He demonstrated this in his  Osuachara ward when he delivered a physically-challenged person, Julius Enemaku, as the councillor in 2002. Even in the coming local government election, he is supporting another physically-challenged person, Ndubueze Ikeji, for councillor.

“He does not believe in giving you fish but to teach you how to fish, that way the dependency syndrome can be broken. His Destiny Foundation has touched many lives and I am happy you are taking records.

“Araraume will restore the lost glory of Imo and get it back on track. His decision to contest again is for the people, who have suffered maladministration, to enjoy respite.”

  • Psychiatric hospital reunites 120 inmates with families

The psychiatric hospital in Eket local government area of Akwa Ibom state has treated and discharged no fewer than 120 inmates and reunited them with their families.

The official, a medical doctor, who did not want to be named, disclosed to journalists during an interaction that the rehabilitation and re-integration exercise took place on June 7.

He said the patients were delivered to their various families within and outside the state by the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

Thursday was a day to discharge and integrate these former lunatics with their families; this year, government embarked on a mop up exercise and brought the lunatics to psychiatric hospital for two months.

“They were under intensive psychotic care in the hospital for two months before they were discharged to their families.

” During the two months they were in the psychiatric hospital, the rate of lunatics on the streets of Eket, Ikot Ekpene and Uyo reduced because the exercise was targeted at the three LGAs.

“The government has done well to take them away from the streets to reduce the nuisance they constituted to the public.

“These people will be with their families, take their medications and come back after one month for their medical check-up,” he said.

“These inmates who have received treatment did not go to their relatives on their own; the ministry of women affairs and social welfare took them to their relatives.

“They were taken to their families in Lagos, Enugu, Abia, Imo, Uyo and Cross River.

“Money was given to them for support and upkeep before their coming back for medical check-up in a month’s time”.

The official said that during the period that they were at the hospital, a major challenge was insufficient bed spaces.

”They were sleeping on the floor due to lack of beds space in the hospital”.

The medical doctor commended the generosity of Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom and appealed to the relatives and parents of the discharged inmates to complement the efforts of the state government by providing care and love to the people.

When contacted, Dr. Dominic Ukpong, the Commissioner for Health, Akwa Ibom, confirmed the development but told our correspondent that the exercise was not handled by his ministry.

“The mop up exercise was not carried out under my ministry but the ministry of women affairs and social welfare.

  • Another bridge built by Okorocha collapses in Owerri

The bridge at the Children’s Amusement Park located at the Ikemba Ojukwu Centre in Owerri, Imo, built by Gov. Rochas Okorocha’s administration has collapsed.

Witnesses at the scene told the NAN in Owerri on Wednesday that nobody was killed or injured in the incident.

The incident which caused pandemonium in the area, gave room for criticism by some parents whose children visited the place on May 27 during the 2018 Children’s Day Celebration.

A NAN Correspondent, who visited the scene, reports that the incident occurred after a heavy downpour on Tuesday night.

The bridge, being a major tourism site, has been used to generate funds for the state government.

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment, Mrs Ogechi Ololo, told NAN that she had yet to be briefed on the cause of the incident.

Mr Collins Ibe, who witnessed the incident, told NAN that the windstorm that accompanied the downpour might be responsible for the collapsed of the bridge.

Another witness, Mrs Mary Nlemadim, said: “It is unfortunate that this is happening in the state, especially at a place that is supposed to be a recreation centre.

“I thank God that it happened in the night when people were not around; otherwise, there might have been casualties.

“I urge the state government and engineers working on construction projects in the state to be more dedicated and thorough,” she said.

Also, an Engineer, Mr Okechukwu Uba said: “There is need to critically look at all the construction projects going on in the state.

“This is necessary to avoid unnecessary waste of resources, time and human capacity.

“These projects need to get proper approval from professional hands or bodies; they also need to be properly supervised by qualified and experienced personnel.

“Again, they have to be done systematically and not many things at the same time.

“These projects need to be finished up in a tidy manner and subjected to stress tests where necessary, before being opened to the public,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the state Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers, Mr Emeka Ugoanyawu, had earlier warned against substandard engineering work in the state.

Also, the National President of Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN) Mr Kashim Ali, had recently faulted the quality of a flyover constructed by the Okorocha administration, located at Orji.

Ali, as a matter of urgency, urged Gov. Okorocha, to stop work on the flyover.

  • Imo Catholic faithful protest killings, poor governance

The Archbishop of Owerri Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Anthony Obinna, Tuesday led hundreds of Catholic Faithful on a procession against the continued killing of Christians and other innocent Nigerians by herdsmen and Boko Haram insurgents in the Northern parts of the country.

The long procession started from the Assumpta Cathedral and went through major streets within the state capital, resulting in traffic gridlock that lasted for several hours.

The mournful Catholics called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign if his administration can no longer protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

The protesters displayed placards with various inscriptions such as “Catholics are against violence and killing of Priests’, ‘President Buhari resign if…’, ‘Government restrain the herdsmen, ‘Stop the bloodshed, ‘Release Leah Sharibu’, among others.

Archbishop Obinna who addressed newsmen shortly after the procession, regretted that many families have lost members to the rampaging herdsmen, stating that, “we are having killings which doesn’t show that we have left the military era”.

According to him, “there have been intertribal marriages in Nigeria and the people have lived in harmony until the rampaging herdsmen made cohabitation an issue”
The Archbishop charged President  Muhammodu Buhari to rise up to his responsibility of  protection  lives and properties, saying “we want President Buhari to disarm these violent herdsmen and criminals. We know he is doing something but we need it to be more visible and impacting”.

The cleric added further that, “President Buhari should know that he should be a father to everyone and not some as perceived. His subtle and real statements should be to protect every Nigerian”.

The Archbishop further charged security agencies to ensure adequate protection of lives and property of Nigerians at all times, advising that “they should not harbour vipers as alleged by Gen T.Y. Danjuma , President Buhari and the security agencies should be on the same page”.

The Cleric also charged President Buhari to reduce the influence of money on Nigerian politics, opining that until that is done, the wrong people will continue to occupy positions of leadership at the detriment of the entire country.

  • Imo APC crisis: Okorocha meets Buhari again

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday met behind closed doors with Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo and former Edo governor, Adams Oshiomhole, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Reports have it that Okorocha’s meeting with the president, which lasted for about an hour, came few days after he met the president in his country home, Daura, Katsina State.

The governor had complaint about the conduct of the ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his Imo state.

Okorocha, who was again accompanied by Oshiomhole, declined comment on the outcome of his meeting with the president.

NAN, however, gathered that Okorocha might have again lodged a fresh complaint about the way and manner the ward and local government APC congresses were conducted in Imo.

It would be recalled that Okorocha had on May 7 in Daura told newsmen after a closed door meeting with Buhari that there was no ward congress in Imo.

He said: “We expect internal democracy and internal democracy is the way to go. Those kind of funny politics that were played must stop, where people went to carry ballot boxes, steal results looks so primitive.

“I intimated Mr President and we will make sure that such things must stop.’’

Okorocha and his supporters also boycotted the local government APC congress and insisted that a fresh date for ward congress should be fixed before the local government congress.

The governor, while addressing his loyalists, announced that there would be no local government congress in the state until the crisis of the ward congress was rectified.

The state APC Chairman, Mr Hillari Eke, however, told our reporter in Owerri on May 14, that the ward and local government congresses were concluded successfully in the state.

Recalls that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had last two weeks attempted to reconcile the governor with the rival faction of the APC in Imo
