NADDC trains 60 Imo youths on CNG conversion

The Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, has emphasised the importance of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in transforming Nigeria’s automotive industry.

Speaking at the CNG Empowerment and Awareness Summit 2025, themed “Building a Youth-Based Nation Through Cleaner Energy,” in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday, Osanipin stated that the event aimed to raise awareness about the safety, standards, and regulations surrounding CNG as a sustainable alternative fuel for mobility.

He outlined the Council’s commitment to promoting CNG adoption through policies, skills development, standardization, and monitoring of CNG conversion centers.

He also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kojo Motors, and the Imo State Government in advancing the initiative.

“This initiative will not only enhance the skills of youths and technicians but also contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s automotive industry,” Osanipin said.

Highlighting the benefits of CNG, he noted that it offers a cleaner-burning alternative to petrol, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.

Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves, he added, make CNG a viable energy option that enhances energy security and reduces reliance on petrol.

Osanipin also pointed out the economic advantages of CNG, stating that it is more affordable than petrol, helping vehicle owners cut costs.

Additionally, the transition to CNG is expected to create job opportunities for technicians and mechanics, fostering national development and sustainable economic growth.

He concluded that CNG-powered vehicles are not only cost-effective but also more fuel-efficient, reducing overall energy consumption and contributing to a cleaner environment.

The Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma thanked President Tinubu for his commitment to easing the impact of fuel subsidy removal and reducing energy cost.

Uzodimma who was represented at the occasion by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Talent Hunt, Hon. Mandila Okaegbu, said the emergence of CNG as an alternative to petrol and diesel was the direct result of government’s policies to address energy-security and environmental concerns.

He said that the state government was committed to ensure the success of the project as the government has donated land for the CNG conversion workshop to begin.

He stressed the importance of empowerment for unlocking the entrepreneurial potential of Imo’s youths, describing self-empowerment as a vital tool for personal and communal growth.

Uzodimma urged participants to embrace the training opportunity, while aligning the initiative with the state’s broader goals of youth development and innovation.

Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoch who was represented by official in the ministry, Prof Anoka Njan said the objective of the five days trainnig was to equip technicians with the knowledge, skills and competence required to safely and efficiently convert vehicles to run on CNG.

Imo’s economy soars as VAT contributions surge to N1.59bn

Imo State has recorded an unprecedented 253.63% increase in its Value Added Tax (VAT) contributions between December 2024 and January 2025, marking a significant economic milestone.

According to data from CableIndex released on March 5, 2025, the state’s VAT contributions jumped from N448.51 million in December 2024 to N1.59 billion in January 2025.

Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Public Enlightenment, attributed this remarkable growth to the administration’s strategic economic policies and governance reforms, which have stimulated business activity and enhanced revenue generation.

“The surge in VAT contributions reflects the success of our economic policies, which have boosted business activities and strengthened the state’s revenue base,” Ugochukwu stated.

He emphasized that Imo’s performance stands out, especially amid broader economic challenges faced by many states.

Imo’s ability to triple its VAT contributions in just one month signals a robust economic recovery and lays a strong foundation for sustained growth, he added.

“With such impressive results, Imo State is well-positioned to attract further investments and sustain its upward trajectory, ensuring a brighter future for its residents and businesses alike.”

The report also revealed contrasting trends across the country. While states like Kwara, Sokoto, and Edo celebrated triple-digit percentage increases, others such as Benue, Taraba, and Ogun experienced significant declines in their VAT contributions.

  • Over 30 bodies found in Imo River

Over 30 bodies found in Imo River

No fewer than 30 unidentified bodies have been found on the Imo River in the Oriendu autonomous community in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The traditional ruler of the community, Eze Philip Ajomiwe, made this known at a press conference in his palace, following the discovery of the body of some women.

The deceased, according to Eze Ajomiwe, were suspected to have been killed for rituals as their vital organs of most of them, mainly young girls, were missing.

According to him, they suspected that the bodies could have been dumped in the Imo River, which shares a boundary with the Abia community, by  ritualists from the Imo State flank of the river.

“The bodies, like the recent one, are either naked and without their private parts or in a bag.

“There have also been cases of two decomposing bodies seen beside the NNPC Pipeline.

“The victims are mostly young girls. The ritualists from Imo usually come at night to dump the bodies of their victims inside the Imo River, and in the morning, we wake to see them,” the monarch added.

Explaining that the security agents had not made any arrests since then, the Eze expressed concern that the situation was getting out of hand and had created fear in and around the community.

According to him, efforts by the community’s vigilante group to arrest the suspects had failed, because the group was not as equipped as the suspects were said to be.

“So, we’re appealing to the state government to empower the vigilante group with the necessary logistics and the wherewithal to enable it to match the suspects,” he added.

He said his complaints about the situation to security agents had been unsuccessful, noting that the latest was a letter to the Speaker of the House of Assembly on February 7.

  • IMO CHARTER OF EQUITY: Thanks to Orlu Zone President Generals for reaffirming Owerri Zone for governorship in 2027

IMO CHARTER OF EQUITY: Thanks to Orlu Zone President Generals for reaffirming Owerri Zone for governorship in 2027

    • But Owerri Zone should be Cautious, guided not to deny themselves this Golden opportunity Governor Hope Uzodimma has endorsed for them
    • By Hon. Amby Uneze KSJI

This piece of article is like a commendation note to a people that have done well. Yes! The president generals of all the autonomous communities in the twelve local government areas of Orlu zone, otherwise called the Imo West senatorial zone have expressed their desire and openness for peace, fairness and justice in Imo State. It is not just an empty expression, it is an expression backed with the zeal, sincerity, action and benevolence. In actual fact, every peace-loving Imolite should all clap for the president generals of autonomous communities in Orlu zone for this bold statement.

Let me not sound immodest if I project the Orlu zone as the pinnacle of development in Imo State. Judging from the happenings especially under the governance of the present administration being led by Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, the long expected political harmony is about to be birthed which would automatically crystalize triumph and jubilation in the State. To toe the good gestures and projections for peace, development and harmonious relationships among the three brotherly zones of the State as enunciated by no other person than the Governor himself, another Orlu Zone unified body, the PGs have reaffirmed His Excellency’s bold move. This is indeed the Orlu Zone example of a good brother.

An American author, H. Jackson Brown, Jr. in one of his classical quotes says “the best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.” Therefore, both Governor Hope Uzodimma and the people of Orlu Zone are preparing their tomorrow today so that the best would come. Their vision today is to have a smooth political transition that would see the three senatorial zones of Orlu, Owerri and Okigwe seamlessly climbing to the governorship leader of the State as at when due without acrimony, rancour, fighting and back-slapping. That is the way to go: for peace building, fairness, justice and equity.

I stumbled into an art print hung on a wall somewhere with the inscription: “Well done is better than well said”, inspired by the timeless wisdom of Benjamin Franklin. This captivating piece combines the power of words with the beauty of typography, creating a visual masterpiece that will ignite ones motivation and inspire action. This also captures the essence of the Governor’s inspiration when he wisely endorsed the “Imo charter of equity” as its full implementation would remind us that yes indeed his word and action has transcended into reality of enye ndi ebe, enye ndi ebe, ogbu alaa! (Live and let live syndrome).

To continuously put us in the right track of the Governor’s inspired wisdom, I suggest we hang this art print in the office, study, or any space where someone seeks inspiration. Its bold presence will serve as a constant reminder to go beyond mere words and strive for excellence in everything we do. Whether you’re a politician, an entrepreneur, a student, or a dreamer with big aspirations, this print will fuel your drive and propel you towards success.

Back to my rider “Owerri Zone should be Cautious, guided not to Deny Themselves this Golden opportunity Governor Hope Uzodimma has Endorsed for them”, may sound as a wise advice, it is also inspirational to remind the Owerri zone that the ball is in their cut. This is the opportune time to show greater appreciation and support to Governor Hope Uzodimma. As the impending beneficiary of this wise political calculation, Owerri zone political leaders need to ensure that the governor’s support to realize this noble dream is not jeopardized. The governor putting paid to his vow and commitment expresses great sacrifice whose imprints would remain permanently in the anals of history of the State.

Therefore, the leaders of Owerri zone be it the Imo Harmony Project (IHP), the Trinity Owerri Political Consultative Assembly (Trinity OPOCA) or any other sub political groups whose soul aim it is to realize the Governor’s tenet of Imo charter of equity by shifting the governorship to Owerri zone in 2027 should put their houses in order right now. We all agree that power is not given on a platter of gold, it is rather negotiated, grabbed, technically arranged, etc. In a nutshell, the Owerri zone leaders should not cease to massage the ego of the governor, impress him, hail him, be at his side always and NOT to stab him on the back.

At this point, it is necessary to remind us that Governor Hope Uzodimma is not the originator of Imo Charter of Equity.  The Imo charter of equity was conceived by the Imo Elders Council with His Majesty, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya (also from Orlu zone) as its Chairman. The genesis of the charter as initiated by the Elders Council and ratified by the generality of Imo stakeholders has as its purpose: to bring peace, justice, equity and above all, the needed security in the State. Furthermore, the Imo State House of Assembly passed a resolution, endorsing the Charter of Equity “as a roadmap towards political stability, peace and inclusiveness of all the zones in Imo State.”

The governor on his final receipt of the clean copy of the document assured that his administration will work with the Elders Council and other Imo State stakeholders to achieve the principles of the Charter of Equity. He pleaded with all political stakeholders to endeavour to give the Charter of Equity the space to succeed, noting that “it does not in any way go against the tenets of democracy.”

Again, when the document was initially presented to the Governor at the Government House, Owerri in April 2023, he did not only express joy but quickly reiterated that nothing on earth would stop the full implementation of the document.

The governor said, “The charter of equity will remove tension and acrimony. We convinced ourselves. We looked at it, and that charter of equity is happening in other states (including our neighbouring States). They make sure that governorship goes from one zone to the other. I do not doubt that my successor will be produced by the Imo charter of equity.

“The confidence reposed on me is very huge. And I will make sure I do not disappoint Imolites. I am committed to making sure that after me, the next governor will come from Owerri zone (Imo East). Thereafter it will move to the Okigwe zone (Imo North).”

He, however, called on the members of the Imo State Council of Elders to work together to ensure the full implementation of the Charter while assuring that his government would use its machinery to defend the document and ensure its implementation to the latter.

Consolidating the endorsement Governor Uzodimma had given to the Charter of Equity, a congregation of Imo Elders, traditional rulers (NdiEze), leaders of religious bodies, professionals, presidents general of town unions, women and youth groups, etc had an interdenominational service where the Charter of Equity was handed over to God. This special event took place at the popular Ndubuisi Kanu Square.

Already, the implementation of Imo charter of equity started in 2023 with the second term of Governor Uzodimma from Orlu zone. Therefore, going by the contents of the document, by 2027, the Owerri zone gets it turn and thereafter it moves to Okigwe Zone. So longer as governor Uzodimma from Orlu Zone took the first shot, he is duty bound to stand by his talk not to rock the boat. It is no rocket science but a truism. After all, the Governor has not disappointed Imolites. He has remained a hardworking governor judging by quality roads and other developmental infrastructure he has to his credit. His national and international political exposure have also paved way for him to leave a remarkable imprint as well as installing a capable successor from Owerri zone.

The usual fight among the Owerri zone during governorship race ought to be thrown into the dustbin. The time for seriousness and telling ourselves the home truth is now. We should eschew the bitterness that always associates when it is time for governorship consideration: “It mustn’t be an Mbaise, it mustn’t be an Owerri Federal Constituency, it mustn’t be an Ngor Okpala, it mustn’t be an Mbaike. But it must be an Owerri zone person. No matter the sub-zone the Governorship is coming from among these areas, it is an Owerri zone ticket. Therefore, the people of the zone must guard jealously this opportunity that beckons on them.

While still commending the Orlu zone president generals of the autonomous communities in the twelve local governments, it is also important to remind the Okigwe and Owerri zones president generals of autonomous communities to emulate the Orlu Zone by reaffirming and consolidating the decision of governor Hope Uzodimma on the tenet of the Imo charter of equity. Recall that sometimes last year (2024), the traditional rulers of the Orlu, Owerri and Okigwe Zones in their respective communiques had endorsed the Imo charter of equity. In the same vein, the religious groups and their leaders also converged at Ndubuisi Kanu Square (former Heros Square) to stamp the Imo charter of equity by committing it to God.

The entire Imolites and particularly, the Owerri zone will ever remain grateful to God for the person of the People’s Governor, Hope Uzodimma to ensure peace, justice and equity in Imo State by finding his successor in Owerri zone come 2027. To God be the glory.

Imo police arrest Inspector, four others over murder of lawyer

The Imo State Police Command has arrested four suspects including a police inspector in connection with the murder of Barrister Chinedu Nwowu.

The police inspector identified as Augustine Odidika was reportedly arrested last Thursday shortly after the gruesome murder of Nwowu in Mgbidi Town last Wednesday.

It was learned that the police inspector had previously threatened to kill the lawyer, prompting the lawyer to petition the Assistant Inspector General of Police for threats to his life.

However, the petition remained uninvestigated at the time of the lawyer’s murder.

Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Owerri Branch, Chief Chris Ihentuge, revealed this development to The Nation in a statement on Wednesday.

According to him, the police informed the NBA delegation, during a visit to the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, on Monday.

“During the meeting, the Bar leaders urged the Police to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice. They assured the Police of the willingness of the Bar to collaborate and support the ongoing investigation,” he said.

He said the police also informed the delegation that investigations had commenced, adding that the case file and suspects had been transferred from the Mgbidi Police Division to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

“The Deputy Commissioner of Police disclosed that four suspects, including a serving Inspector of Police who is also the deceased’s kinsman, have been arrested in connection with the murder. Efforts are also underway to apprehend a warrant officer serving in Enugu who has been implicated in the case,” he said.

He added: “The Police Chiefs assured the Bar of an impartial and thorough investigation. They emphasized that the involvement of a serving police officer would not hinder the pursuit of justice, vowing to prosecute all those responsible for this crime.”

He said: “You know they may like to use his position to influence whatever but the commissioner and deputy commissioner have assured us that no matter how highly placed the people involved are they will do the needful. And one of the persons that they are still looking for is a Warrant Officer in the Army, he is serving in Enugu.

“So they are also putting things in place to make sure that he is apprehended. We assured them that we are going to cooperate with them in whatever they are doing to make sure that justice is served. So the NBA is ready and willing to assist, the person that was murdered is our colleague, so we can’t leave like that.”

He disclosed that the delegation also raised the issue of a bomb explosion that destroyed the house of their colleague at Mbieri.

“The Commissioner of Police (CP) assured the delegation that the matter was being handled by the appropriate authorities.”

  • IMO to strengthen seafarer welfare, maritime security

IMO to strengthen seafarer welfare, maritime security

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, has unveiled key items on the IMO’s 2025 agenda, focusing on seafarer welfare, maritime security, and decarbonisation.

His statement comes as Nigeria ramps up its campaign for a coveted seat on the IMO Council, aiming to strengthen its influence in global maritime decision-making.

In a video address, Dominguez highlighted the importance of improving conditions for seafarers, including addressing safety concerns and reducing criminalisation.

He said: “We start 2025 focusing on three main topics, as last year.

“The first one, seafarers, the second one, security around the globe, and the third one, decarbonisation. When it comes to seafarers, we need to enhance the safety and security of the key personnel on board ships.

“We also need to focus on increasing the support that we provide to them, not just on decarbonisation, but also when it comes to reducing the criminalisation of seafarers; then diversity.”

He also emphasised the need for greater gender inclusion in the sector, stating: “We have made progress, particularly when it comes to gender in the maritime sector, but the reality is that there is more to come. I will continue to be firm on my commitment and my policy of not participating and engaging in panels where there is no female representation.

Dominguez reiterated the IMO’s commitment to the 2023 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) strategy, which targets decarbonisation by or around 2050.

“This is a big year for IMO, and I remain positive that member states and stakeholders will find common ground and adopt the technical and economic measures,” he said.

The theme for World Maritime Day 2025, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” the IMO Secretary-General noted, underscores the organisation’s focus on sustainable ocean governance.

Nigeria has underlined its strategic importance as Africa’s largest economy and a maritime hub in the Gulf of Guinea.

In recent statements, the federal government, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, reiterated its commitment to securing Nigeria’s election to Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

The head of the ministry, Adegboyega Oyetola, highlighted this during a stakeholders’ validation session in November 2024, where the nation’s first National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy was discussed.

The minister explained that Nigeria’s push for the IMO seat reflects its ambition to strengthen its influence in global maritime governance while driving reforms in the domestic marine sector.

“As we develop this policy, the Ministry remains committed to repositioning Nigeria as a dominant player in the marine and blue economy, both regionally and globally. We are also pursuing Nigeria’s candidacy for election to Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which underscores our determination to strengthen our voice in global maritime governance,” Oyetola stated.

“Nigeria’s candidacy for election to Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) underscores our determination to strengthen our voice in global maritime governance,” he added.

As the IMO gears up for a critical year, Dominguez urged member states and stakeholders to align efforts for shared goals.

“Join me in shaping a successful and memorable year for IMO,” he said, expressing optimism about the organisation’s capacity to address the maritime sector’s challenges.
