A source close to the senator told the Nation that the gunmen stormed the senator’s residence during the early hours of Monday, February 12.

The source added that while the senator managed to escape unharmed, one of the policemen assigned to him was fatally shot.

He said: “The news of Senator Patrick Ndubueze being attacked is true. They stormed his residence at Umualumoke and killed a policeman working for him.

On the allegation of embezzlement of funds amounting to N220million from the oil company meant for the development of the community, the leader of the community challenged the oil company to come out and tell the World of any fund meant for the development of the community which was given to anybody for embezzlement.

Imo journalist narrates how son escaped from kidnappers’ den

An Imo-based journalist, Mr Reginald Mbajunwa, has narrated how his 17-year-old son, Nzubechi, was kidnapped by hoodlums on his way to Church for a crossover night on Wednesday, January 31.

Mbajunwa, the Director of News at the Imo Broadcasting Corporation, told newsmen on Thursday in Owerri that he received a telephone call from his son’s abductors demanding N5 million ransom for his release.

He said: “They threatened to sacrifice my son, if I failed to pay the ransom before 11am today, being Thursday.

“He had boarded a commercial motorcycle, otherwise called Okada, at Avu to Obinze, near Owerri, around 6.38pm on Wednesday for a night prayer session.

“In less than four minutes ride, the Okada fell down with both the operator and himself.

“And his cohorts, armed with AK47 and machetes, came out from the bush and picked my son into the forest.

“They were taking him into Nekede bush where they kill people and harvest their organs, if their relations don’t pay the ransom on time.

“I begged them not to kill him that I will look for the money, but God manifested his powers in a mysterious way.”

Mbajunwa said his son mysteriously found courage and fought the armed kidnappers, over powered them and tore their shirts, before escaping from the den.

He said the boy later took shelter at Mangero Water Company, where a security man on duty sheltered him.

“My son gave him my wife’s number and he informed my wife that my son is now with him.

“My wife called me and I quickly mobilised Obinze Vigilante, who accompanied me to the company, where I reunited with my son,” he said.

Mbajunwa attributed his son’s miraculous escape to the divine intervention of God.

According to him, members of his Church, who were informed about the incident, immediately began to pray for his release.

He said his son, who escaped from his alleged attackers at about 11pm, sustained machete injury but was stable and in good health condition.

Imo Assembly passes motion for mandatory weekly cleaning of markets

The Imo House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a motion directing the Imo State Amalgamated Market Traders Association to carry out clean up exercise every Thursday in Imo markets.

The motion, sponsored by Dr Francis Osuoha (APC -Ohaji Egbema), urged Gov. Hope Uzodimma to mandate the state Ministry of Environment to issue the directive.

Presenting the motion, Osuoha observed that majority of the markets in the state were littered with filth and hazardous debris which could cause diseases if regular cleanup was not done.

He said that ensuring that the markets were cleaned regularly was in the interest of the people especially as the governor had their health and well-being at heart.

Osuoha, therefore, prayed the house to urge the governor to mandate the ministry of environment to direct that three hours be set aside every Thursday for cleaning the markets and environs.

Supporting the motion, the Deputy Minority Leader, Mr Clinton Amadi (LP-Owerri Municipal), said there was need to ensure that the markets were kept clean to reduce incidences of diseases caused by filth.

Mr Johnson Duru (APC-Ideato South) said the state of the markets amounted to undermining the governor’s efforts at improving the welfare of citizens.

Imo CAN receives Tinubu’s palliative for southeast residents

Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma has flagged-off the distribution of President Bola Tinubu’s Christmas gift of rice to the five south eastern states as part of the President Bola Tinubu’s palliative measures to alleviate the suffering of the people.

Uzodimma admonished the Church leaders who came to take delivery of the gift at the Secretariat of Imo State Christian Association Nigeria (CAN), Owerri to constantly uphold the government of President Tinubu in their prayers.

He thanked God for his mercies that made it possible for the people to overcome the challenges of 2023, noting that 2024 will be a lot more better for all.

The governor who thanked the men of God for finding time to be part of the event reminded them  that on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu introduced some reforms meant to recover our economy and reduce hardship in the country, strengthen the Naira, grow our economy, create jobs for the unemployed and generally make Nigeria great again.

He said though some of those policies came with initial pains, like the high cost of items in the market and generally, high cost of living in Nigeria, “but the policies are meant to address these pains.”

Governor Uzodimma recalled that towards the end of last year, the federal and state governments distributed palliative materials in Imo State, doing their best to send the materials to the nooks and crannies of the State and conscious of the fact that Southeast is predominantly Christians.

He said: “80% of people living in the Southeast are Christians”, he noted adding that the Christmas celebration is taken as a very serious festival.

The governor who expressed the President’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of the people, emphasized the significance of providing relief and other support to citizens, particularly during the festive season.

He said that the trucks loads of rice they came to flag off the distribution neither came from the State nor Federal Government, rather a personal donation from President Tinubu to the Christians as gifts to the Southeast.

The Governor said that he decided to involve Imo State CAN to ensure seamless distribution since all Christians in the zone are under the umbrella of CAN.

However, he said that the Imo State Government will support CAN with the logistics to convey the truck loads of rice to all the Southeast states of Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi and even Imo State.

The governor then urged the Christian Communities in the South Eastern States to fervently pray for President Tinubu’s administration to do better having laid the foundation for a prosperous country with the ambitious 2024 budget already signed into law by the President.

“Never in the history of Nigeria has anybody released such huge sum of money as an annual budget.”

In his welcome address, Reverend Dr. Eches Divine Eches, the CAN chairman of Imo state, lauded Governor Uzodimma’s efforts in ensuring that the welfare of the people is taken care of, describing him as “a caring and lover of God and mankind, promoting the interests of the Igbo people on the national stage.”

He also commended President Tinubu for his gift to Christian Communities in the region.
