  • ‘Impostor using Vice President’s name to threaten our community’

The Olusesi royal family of Olugborogan Town in Eti-Osa Local Government has alleged that a suspected land grabber is using Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s name to intimidate residents.

The family said the person had been threatening to forcibly takeover land belonging to residents of the community by dropping the Vice President’s name.

However, The Nation was unable to reach the alleged ‘troublemaker’, as no one in the Olusesi family had his contact information.

According to a document by the family head, Prince Rotimi Olusesi, and its Secretary, Prince Oluwakemi Olusesi, the alleged threats could lead to a breakdown of law and order similar to what happened in 2007.

They said: “Our fear is that we do not want a repeat of the incident of 2007 which caused a total breakdown of law and order leading to mass destruction of lives and properties in Olugborogan Community.

“We state as follows: that the man has for some time now been using the guise that he is very close to the seat of power in Aso Rock, Abuja to perpetrate fraud and engage in nefarious activities in Olugborogan Town.”

The family claimed he had also been “using thugs and members of the Police Force to harass and intimidate the entire Olugborogan Community and to lay claim to land that does not belong to him.

“We have made several complaints to the Nigerian Police Force who seem to backpedal and fail to take appropriate steps once the names of the certain powerful personalities in Aso Rock including the Vice President is branded by the said person. As a result of the above, he has succeeded in unleashing terror, causing mayhem, breakdown of law and order, destruction of properties and threatening the life of the people of Olugborogan Community.”

They added: “The entire Olugborogan community is aware that the present administration will not ignore this call as it believes in commitment to the rule of law and will not consent or accede to the nefarious activities of this person.”

  • Vigilance group threatens to sue leader’s impostor

The Southwest Command of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) has vowed to sue a former member, Usman Mohammed Jahun, who allegedly impersonated its Commander General, Ali Sokoto, at the Senate’s public hearing of the VGN bill.

Seeking advice at the Falana and Falana Chamber in Lagos, the crime fighters were miffed because Jahun, who left in 2009, reportedly appeared at the public hearing of the VGN bill last year and tried to hijack it.

The command vowed to resist every internal and external intrigue aimed at subverting Sokoto’s position and authority, saying every member must be loyal to the man who has provided enabling environment and good leadership for the security outfit over the years.

They were led to the Chamber by the National Chief of Staff, Chief Jimoh Aliu.

An address by the Ondo State Commandant, Pastor Akinwunmi Oluwole Gideon, sought legal advice from Barrister Femi Falana (SAN) towards bringing Jahun to book.

The human rights lawyer collected their documents and promised to peruse them. He advised that the VGN should always publicise its worthwhile activities so that individuals and establishments would know the steps its strengths and steps taken and use their services.

Falana said: “Nigeria is under-policed, you should take advantage of the security lapse and popularise your activities through adequate publicity.”

•Man charged with impersonating military officer

A 32-year-old driver, Mohammed Abdullahi, has been arrested by operatives of X- Squad, Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly impersonating an Air Force officer.

Another man, Suleiman Abdullahi was yesterday arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly impersonating a military officer.

Abdullahi was arrested by Air Force personnel who saw him wearing the uniform and performing like an officer.

The personnel handed him over to the police.

Abdullahi, who was paraded yesterday, said he got the uniform from his friend, Haruna Ali, an army personnel, adding: “We met at Agege on January 17 and he handed the cloth to me to keep for his younger brother whom he said passed out in 2014 but has not got uniform. I am not air force personnel; I am a driver; my route is Kano to Lagos, Mile 2 to Kaduna and vice versa. I used to drive my brother’s bus but he sold it and travelled abroad for greener pasture.

“I have a family to feed; I was thinking on how to get money when I consulted Haruna and he advised me to use the air force uniform to fend for myself. I started wearing the uniform which I bought for N5,000 to be escorting vehicles from Kaduna to Lagos; they used to pay me N 3,000  for each vehicle I escort. But on February 2, some air force personnel saw me wearing the uniform and arrested me and later transferred me to police.

“I am married with three children and my wife is pregnant; she is expected to deliver this week. I love the work of air force; I have tried three times to join air force but I was disqualified on medical ground.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), said the suspect would be charged to court and warned others engaged in such act to desist.

Abdullahi, 25 is also being tried for being in possession of a Nigerian Customs Service identification card.

Prosecutor Simon Uche said the accused committed the offence on March 3 around 10pm at Ilufe in Ojo, Lagos.

“The accused on the said date and time unlawfully paraded himself as a military officer by wearing an army camouflage T-shirt. He was also found with a duly signed Nigerian Customs Service identity card by 18 Surveillance men in Ojo,” Uche said.

The accused denied the charge and was granted N50,000 bail.

He is also to deposit N25,000 with the court’s registrar.

Magistrate Paul Adedamola adjourned till May 23.

  • Unforgiving politician an impostor, says Jonathan

Unforgiving politician an impostor, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that any unforgiving politician is an impostor.

Speaking during the post- National Pilgrimage Thanksgiving Service at the Aso Villa Chapel, Abuja, he noted that half of Nigeria’s politicians were in politics because of what they could get.

Jonathan was responding to a remark by the Aso Villa Chaplain, Rev Obioma Onwuzurumba, that most politicians were unforgiving.

He said: “These days, we learn not to talk or we talk little. The chaplain accused us (politicians) that we do not forgive or that some politicians don’t forgive. Apparently, the Bible said this, that politicians are the people who forgive.

“Politicians, I would not say much, are those who forgive because in politics whether local or national, the belief is that you don’t have permanent friends or permanent enemies, but permanent interest.

“If somebody is your enemy today and there is a change of interest and he becomes your friend, first you have to forgive, otherwise you cannot have a friend that you cannot work with.

“But politics is just like some trades. More than 50 per cent of us, who are into politics, are not supposed to be politicians.

“Most of us, who are in politics, are not supposed to be there. But we are in politics because we have no other thing to do. If you see a politician, who cannot forgive, he is an impostor.”

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, in his message, titled: “Forget not all His benefits”, hailed the President for doing the right thing by signing the anti-gay bill into law, despite the pressure from Western countries.

Dignitaries at the event included the First Lady, Patience; Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State; Kogi State Deputy Governor Yomi Awoniyi; Supervising Minister for Defence Labaran Maku; Minister of Police Affairs Caleb Olubolade and senior presidential aides.
