  • ‘Refusal to donate blood may cause impotence’

Non-voluntary donation of blood has been advanced as another cause of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.

It also causes Fibromyalgia in both male and female. Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.

According to a consultant hematologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof. Sulaiman Akanmu, male erectile dysfunction also known as impotence can result directly from iron overload when men do not donate blood, and their blood cannot be replenished.

Prof. Akanmu spoke on: “Medical reasons inherent in voluntary blood donation”, organised by Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) as a way of driving blood stock for its blood bank.

He said the cause of high iron levels in men is due to a genetic condition  called hemochromatosis – also known as Iron Overload.

“Iron plays a part in creating hemoglobin, which is the substance in red blood cells that does the actual carrying of oxygen and maintain the perkiness of a man’s penis. But when iron is too much in the body, it becomes dangerous and gets concentrated in the liver, bone joints and oxygen is impeded, and man will not be able to have a good erection.

He encouraged men to get involved in voluntary blood donation.

For women, Prof. Akanmu said they lose iron by menstruating every month but if they do not still donate, they risk other ill health conditions.

“Men are prone to accumulating potentially toxic levels of ingested iron in their organs and glands.  Although iron is an essential element for healthy life, too much iron can overwhelm the body’s natural storage capability, leading to oxidative stress, tissue damage and early aging.

“Excessive body iron accumulation can also lead to impotence, loss of libido (sexual interest) and function, depression, loss of muscle mass and strength, enlargement and impairment of liver and spleen, loss of body hair, hypothyroidism, hypogonadism- inadequate functioning of the testes, with noticeable changes (darkening) of semen colour, chronic fatigue and joint pain.  Too much iron should be suspect in the presence of any of these symptoms especially in combination.”

  • Good sleep can fix impotence, says expert

Good sleep can fix impotence, says expert

What has sleep got to do with erectile dysfunction (ED)? A lot, says Caribbean Health and Nutrition Managing Director Dr Patrick  Ijewere. Those who do not enjoy a good sleep could be having more problems than just tiredness, he said, adding: “It can actually be a tell tale sign of ED”. Ijewere spoke at the activities marking Vitafoam’s World Sleep Day.

He explained that fatigue or “improper amounts of sleep and quality of sleep” can impact a wide range of health conditions, including erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms.

“Chronic sleep shortages or problems have been linked to a host of other health issues, including increasing the risk of developing heart disease and strokes, and other conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity. We also know that sleeplessness can age your brain by up to seven years by getting not only too little sleep but too much,” he said.

Ijewere said patients ha been assisted to overcome ED and other conditions by helping them modify their sleep patterns style.

He said a slight adjustment in lifestyle would result in a good night’s rest. Such adjustments, he said, include cutting  down caffeine as the effects of caffeine can take about eight hours to wear off, avoiding alcohol as a sleep aid as it may initially help you fall asleep, but it can also lead to less-than-restful sleep.

Others are relaxing before bedtime so as to create a pre-sleep habit. Such adjustments, Ijewere said,  are light stretching or a hot bath, to help you unwind from the day. Regular exercise, usually in the mornings or afternoons, and keeping your bedroom dark, quiet, and comfortable will help.

Ijewere said the day starts for the body when one is asleep and not on waking up or during napping, as “the body recreates, refreshes, relaxes, renews and rebounds during sleep. Unlike when people say the day starts on waking up, when the alarm blows or when one gets off the bed.”

He advised that it is best to sleep on cotton, wool or dry grass as these materials keep “us warm during cold or chill nights and calm us during hot nights. These are evidenced in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s where even the pillows sold are stuffed with dry grasses.

Vitafoam Nigeria Plc  Group Managing Director, Taiwo Adeniyi said the theme of this year’s World Sleep Day ”Good Sleep is a reachable dream” – affects the truth that people without worries enjoy the most peaceful and uninterrupted rest. “Sound sleep is a treasured function and one of the core pillars of health. When sleep fails health declines and there is decreasing quality of life,” he stated.

Quoting a section of Mckinsey quarterly report of last month, he said, “The organisational cost of insufficient sleep” shows that Sleep-awareness programs can produce better leaders, may Nigeria current economic challenges which can be trace to years of bad leadership, would have been averted if we had better sleep awareness programs in our society. This is why Vitafoam Nig. Plc will continue to support World Sleep Day in creating awareness for sleep and also provide quality products that enable our Nigerians achieve a good night’s sleep, in order to produce better leaders for our beloved country Nigeria.”

He said experts say getting a good night sleep’s  depend on a lot of factors; comfort, stress level, room temperature but to get it right  you have to start with the basics and your mattress is the first building block to a restful slumber.

“Our spring mattress is posturpedic, orthopedic and therapeutic, this mattress help to support your body in a neutral position, one in which your spine has a nice curvature while your buttocks, heels, shoulders and head are supported in proper alignment. We are confidence that good sleep is an achievable dream with Vitafoam, as we have gone beyond mattress to offer our target audiences other beddings products like bedframe, bed topper, bed sheets, duvet and various types of pillows (throw pillows, Music pillows and memory pillow e.t.c.) that will ensure you achieve good sleep. We have transcended beyond sleep business to the living business, we now manufacture semi rigid and rigid polyurethane foam products including furniture, bed and beddings, foot wears, insulated panels and molded products that make you experience total comfort. We are committed to producing quality innovative product that will support sleeps and total wellbeing,” Adeniyi said.

  • Impotence

Impotence is the inability of a man to perform the sexual act satisfactorily. It may consist of a weak erection, inability to gain an erection, loss of sexual desire, premature ejaculation or loss of normal sensation at the time of ejaculation.

Transient impotence is fairly common and does not imply a physical or psychological disorder. It is often related to mild degrees of anxiety, depression, pre-occupation or fatigue associated with ordinary problems of daily living.

Chronic impotence, on the other hand, is due to either physical or psychological reasons. The physical factors include ageing, chronic debilitating disease, alcoholism, drug addiction, diabetic neuropathy, disease of the nervous system; especially spinal cord damage, endocrine disorder, damage to the urethra, large hydrocoeles and hernias.

Various drugs, including certain anti-hypertensive drugs, may produce impotence in some men. The psychological reasons for chronic impotence often include guilt and anxiety about the sexual act itself, hostility towards the partner, unwillingness to assume responsibility for all that goes with marriage and children, unhappiness at home and neglect by the wife, who may even neglect herself to the point of becoming unattractive and undesirable, especially after menopause.

Apart from the causes already mentioned, other known causes of impotence are fatty tissues (like in obesity), venereal diseases, stress and excessive intake of alcohol.

When a couple cannot have a child, the wife is always thought to be the culprit and looked down upon as an outcast, with disdain. Yet, many a man constitutes the weak link in the chain most times, without the slightest suspicion that they are.

    Prevention and Control

From observations, the failure to perform sexual acts effectively could be due to disuse of the organ over a long period  a condition we recognize biologically as disuse atrophy. Every part of the body must be exercised (although, in this case, not indiscriminately!). Conversely, over-indulgence in sexual activity in early days in a man’s life should be avoided, particularly where stimulants are used. These can cause impotence at early middle and old age.

    Treatment and Control of Impotence

In treating this disorder, the patient is advised to rest well. In Holistic Lifecare, it is strongly advised that the client should go back to nature. Firstly, a strong cleansing herb is given to him, to help remove fats from his internal organs. The patient should abstain from sexual intercourse for a specific period while he is being treated. He must stop alcoholic drinks and smoking. A healthy, energy-giving diet is recommended.

Most importantly, the Holistic remedy being suggested for impotence is a combination of natural extracts of herbs such as Colocasia antiquorum, Musa parasidiaca, Triumfetta cordifolia and Verbena officinalis.

The anger, incoherence and impotence of a “concern citizen”: the raw underbelly of the war on corruption

Absolutely unedited and uncensored, here is the text of one reader’s response to my reflections on the need to bring the rule of law into a fruitful union with justice in last week’s piece in this column. The only thing I have done to the text as received is to bracket it from the brief comment that I shall make on it by placing it in italics in its entirety. Here it goes:

Prof as we used to call you guys with too much english knowledge in my days at 9ja Uni ive been reading with rapt attentions 4 some weeks now your dialogue about president buhari’s method in Fighting the anti graft war .Haba! Prof yoruba adage says ina esusu kijoni lemeji meaning once bitten ttwice shy why can’t you these grammar people 4 once consider that itvis you this so call elite that are destroying and using your so call classroom and pen knowledge to continously making this God blessed nation called Nigeria becoming a laughing stock to comity of nations . Why on earth are you ppl always talk of rule of law and human right in defence of those that need not to be prosecuted but stone to death haba! Prof you ppl hv now rven gone yo the extend of quoting the word of God lopsidedly in other to buttress your so call heartless heart please permit me as i really don’t want to personalise this write up but i cry for my beloved Nigeria whenever i read most of you people write ups sir where was the rule of law when God killed all the stiffnecked israelites and refused to let them get to the promised land bcos of their bresking God’s law where wss rule of law when God removed and eventually destroyed the first king of israel Saul when he broke God’s commandments have yiu all forgotten what happenrd to the guy that try to right the ark of God when King David was taking it from obededium house and were been instructed by God yhat nobody should torch it under any circumstances ive million and one example sir in the same bible you people started quoting arbitrarily to support those heartless animals called looters  to me they aren’t looters but murderers . Haba prof! Some people in a country that has no light no pipeborne water no hospital no no jobs for the semi demi illetrates that our so call glorified nursery schools called university are year in year out graduating with their only paper certificate shared 2.1 billion dollars among less than 100 people and you people are still talking and debatinga about whether their fundamental human right  or rule of law was or wssn’t follow. Sir with all respect in that America yiu are sir have you not hear of guetsmala bay prison in cuba? Thank Godvive lived there fir several years , in England am here right now have yiu not read about our MP some 2 or 3 years ago that went to jail for ordinary misapproptiating less thsn 5000 pounds? Pst Dele  from London

The anger, the rage of the writer of the text is all too palpable. The text was set to ME by email and I am addressed by my professional title, “Prof”, but the real addressee is a plural group identified as “yiu ppl” (you people). To the writer, we are all heartless people defending looters who are not “ppl” but animals that should be “stone to death”. Now anyone with even minimal literacy skills that read my pieces on the looters would have immediately understood that I was far from defending them, but this is of absolutely no importance to our raving interlocutor; I am guilty, I am one of the “heartless” “ppl” only because the term “rule of law” appeared in my robustly anti-looters pieces. The writer also finds me guilty of defending the looters for using “big enlish” but this a lesser charge or even a merely additional crime to the unconscionable evil of using the term “rule of law” in my writings on this matter, a matter that is of life and death importance for our absolutely irate compatriot. I ask Palladium especially but everyone else reading these words to please take note: the fury of the person who sent this text to me is so deep that it is almost elemental; moreover, it is shared by tens of millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.

But beyond the anger, there are the incoherence and, above all else, the impotence. These are the things that I wish to reflect upon in this short commentary. The incoherence is of course at its most obvious in the complete absence of punctuation in the text; but it is not this technical register of incoherence itself that I wish to draw the reader’s attention to. Rather, it is the emotional and mental incoherence that the ‘punctuational’ incoherence produces that worries me. I call this order of emotional and mental incoherence strategic and tactical: merely by spotting the term, “rule of law” in ANY writing whatsoever, the writer of the irate text lost the ability to distinguish between “opponents” and “defenders” of looters, an inability, in other words, of the capacity to distinguish between potential allies and actual powerful backers of the looters, especially in the judiciary. I confess that this not only worries me tremendously, but it also frightens me, so much so that I have had to dig deep into my intuitions regarding what we can learn from experiences from all over the world in periods of volatile social ferment such as the one Nigeria now faces in this war on corruption and looters. This observation leads me to the last issue that I wish to reflect upon in this piece. I wish to express this as carefully as I can since it is at the core of all my reflections in this piece.

In all parts of the world in periods when extremely volatile mass resentment against deep and wide social injustice is rampant, the strategic incoherence that makes it impossible for the millions of the aggrieved to distinguish between their potential allies and their real enemies reflects a deep sense of powerlessness, a political impotence in which raving incoherently against the prevailing order of things replaces the necessity for individual and mass action against the prevailing (dis)order, injustice and misrule. I suggest that this is the source of the kind of emotional and mental incoherence of the writer of the raging diatribe against anyone talking of the rule of law when, to him or her, the looters should all be “stone to death”. Let me be very clear about this point: to the writer of the irate text, Buhari and his administration will do the work that is necessary to bring the looters to justice; anyone and everyone seeming to question Buhari’s war, his tactics or lack of tactics, is an enemy. And so from the UK or from Kontangora, the cries go up: leave Buhari alone to do what must be done for us, for Nigeria! But when has it ever happened in the history of revolutionary periods that without the intervention of the masses themselves acting through their own organizations and as individuals, when has it ever happened that badly needed change and reforms come exclusively from the ruler(s)?

In conclusion, let me say that this point about the necessity of mass action to bring the looters to justice and recover the loot from them is a point, a declaration that I have made again and again in this column in the last few months. I shall keep making it as long as the delusion remains that Buhari alone will deliver justice. Thus this is a call for action, a peaceful but determined intervention of our peoples for justice and restitution. One would have thought that as a ruling party that places so much propaganda value on “change” the APC itself would have called for this mass intervention in support of its intentions – if they are genuine. I end with a call to the writer of the diatribe against “yiu ppl” using “big english” to forget us and march, protest, and demonstrate for restitution of the stolen loot and punitive justice against the looters. If and when he or she does that, some of us using “big english” will join him or her. And we will prevail, Insha Allah!

  • How to treat impotence, by expert

How to treat impotence, by expert

Men  suffering from impotence also known as erectile dysfunction (ED) need not be ashamed of their condition.

The disease can be treated with herbs, says Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nature Healing Alternative Dr Leye Popoola.

He said though the disease is common among men as they advance in age, they often keep it secret.

They should not, he advised, noting that a problem shared is a problem solved.

Impotence, he said, is the inability of men to maintain erection during normal sexual activities.

“This means somebody may have an erection, but he may not be able to discharge spermatozoa before erection will come down. The man may not also be able to have an erection at all,” he said.

He identified andropause, which is men’s equivalent of menopause in women, lifestyles and medical problems as some of the causes of impotence.

“As men age, they enter into andropause, which is similar to menopause in women. At that stage the sexual hormone, androgen reduces drastically in them. Similarly, the urge to have intercourse also reduce. This is why most old men often used some drugs to enhance their sexual prowess,” he said.

He said most men who are diabetic often suffer from ED because they do not have proper blood circulation, particularly to their private part, toes and fingers.

“In most diabetics, the blood circulation is cut off from most parts of the body and their male organs dysfunctions,” he added.

Men with heart problems, he said, might experience impotence because the heart is the engine room of the body.

Besides, once the heart is malfunctioning, proper blood circulation will be hampered.

“Men who are suffering from Parkinson’s disease often experience ED. This is due to the nature of their ailment. They are always trembling. Also, men who have backache may not be able to consummate their marriage by having intimacy with their wives. Sexual activities are burdensome to them. Even when they have erection, they may still be incapacitated,” he said.

He said smokers can experience the condition because of nicotine in the tobacco, and as such, they have constricted heart rate and smooth intercourse often become a problem.

“So, most smokers usually end up with poor blood circulatory system. This predisposes them to high propensity to come down with ED,” he said.

Popoola said men who are alcoholics can suffer ED.

“When estrogen level in men rises in comparison with their testosterone, it can trigger ED,” he said.

He explained that men can experience the condition as a result of the side effect of drugs they have ingested.

High blood pressure (HBP) drugs, he said, are known to have effect on the male reproductive organ, adding: “Ulcer medication and anti-depressant drugs can also affect men’s potency. This affects men’s libido.”

Prostate drugs, he said, can also make men become impotent.“This information is clearly written on the package or bottle of the drug. So, men suffering prostate enlargement may not be able to have intimacy with their wives again in their lifetime,” he said.

The natural medicine practitioner said prostate can be addressed without having recourse to drugs as there are solution in natural endowments.

Some sleeping pills, he said, can initiate poor libido because of their constituents.

He continued: “People who have hypotension (low blood pressure) could come down with ED. Men experiencing low blood sugar may be unable to have proper erection. Low level of blood in men may hamper their sexual function.

He urged men to always find out what is wrong with them before using drugs.

He said regular consumption of balanced diet would supply men with the needed minerals and vitamins for sexual performance.

“Men who take proper diet cannot experience low blood sugar or low level or blood as the case may be. Balanced diet will not allow them to suffer from ulcer, insomnia and depression.”

Advising men, he said, smokers need to quit, alcoholics should reduce what they consume or stop it completely.

“Men having backache should consult a doctor. They should eat balanced diet regularly. Men who are obese should exercise regularly. Also, 30 minutes of daily brisk walk is good for the body.

They should use natural treatment, adding that a western herb known as yorinbe s good.

“It increases blood flow to the male private organ. But it has side effects. It is not advisable for men having hypertension or HBP or even those with normal blood pressure are advised to use it sparingly or intermittently. It is not safe to use it without guidance.

“Damiana is another herb often used by natural medicine practitioners. It is good for blood circulation, especially to the private part and it is safe to use by all ages with no side effects.

“There is also ginko biloba, which also helps the blood circulatory system.

Another herb is maca. It helps to energise the men for a better sexual intercourse. It can triple the sexual strength of men because it has the capacity to improve libido and boosts the immune system.

Horny goat weed is another herb, which is often used to address the problem. It is used across the world.

Among the Yoruba people, gboingboin is used by herbalists to treat impotence. It is an age-long therapy for ED.

The herbs mentioned can be made into tea and taken twice daily by those suffering from the condition.

The goingboin comes as a stick and it can be soaked in water and taken with tablespoon twice daily.

Also, there is atapariobuko and egbo atorin, which are seen across Yorubaland. They are very potent in curing ED.  They do not have any known side effect.”

He identified vitamins and minerals as immune boosters to enhance men’s sexual health.

“Vitamin A is very good for maintaining an erection. Balanced diet is also important to the health of the prostate.

“A healthy prostate leads to a high libido.Vitamin B complex is very essential for men’s virility. This vitamins helps the body to absorb food taken properly.

“Vitamin C is also good as it repairs the body. It mops up the free radicals in the system.Vitamin E helps to produce the sexual hormones.

“Zinc is very good because it promotes the health of the male organ,” he said.

Popola is against the use of blue drugs also known as sex enhancer. “Many end up badly afterwards as result of heart attack of raised blood pressure,” he said.

He said men with dysfuctional erection should consult their healthcare providers, stressing that self-medication may compound their problem.

Tests, he said, should be carried out on suffers to detect the problem before initiating treatment.

Moreover, appropriate diagnosing could make the problem a lot easier, he added.

Chronic impotence, on the other hand, is due to either physical or psychological reasons. acageing, chronic debilitating disease, alcoholism, drug addiction, diabetic neuropathy, disease of the nervous system; especially spinal cord damage, endocrine disorder, damage to the urethra, large hydrocoeles and hernias.
