Fabric store owner disposes wares after fire incident

Eyewitnesses, petty traders and passersby struggled to quench a fire that razed a mega fabric store, Brasas Fabric at the popular Balogun market in Lagos Island.

The store sitting on the third floor of Brasas Plaza, 43 Martins Street, Lagos Island was gutted by fire around 9am, destroying expensive clothing materials such as bridal clothing, sample laces, brocade, Jacquard lace, metallic lace etc.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

The store owner later ordered that the remnants and partially affected ones be disposed off. This led to a serious tussle among the people as they began to fight one another in the bid to get hold of the materials.

According to the Director, Lagos Fire Service, Mr Rasaq Fadipe, it took the effort of four fire trucks deployed from Ilupeju, Isolo and two from Alausa headquarters to quell the fire from spreading.

He said the fire was further strengthened by close stockpiling of flammable materials.

He urged traders against blocking ventilation cannels in their environment to avoid disasters.

He said: “Around 10:49am, the distress call came in to the state fire service that there was an outbreak of fire on the island closes the Nigerian Insurance House that went in flames in 2014. I quickly dispatched the fire truck from Sari Iganmu and on arrival, we discovered that the fire was serious and we won’t be able to dampen it quickly.  The fire trucks were strategically positioned at the rear of the building and front for the fire fighting operation. The building is about 5-storey but our prompt response prevented the fire from spreading to other floors. We are always careful anytime there is fire on the Island. You can physically see that the space between these buildings is very narrow that it can only occupy a pipe. So, if there is an outbreak of fire on the island, it spreads rapidly and it’s the reason we don’t joke with it at all. The first thing we did was to make sure that there was an opening for people to come out of the building because there are a lot of structures in the building and people didn’t know there was an outbreak of fire.”

On preventive measures, he said: “There is no small fire. Any fire outbreak will be followed by a sort of destruction, so we advise that when they are stockpiling, they should leave spaces. Secondly it is important for them to open door for fire service inspection for their own safety.”

  • Govt sets up panel to probe incident

The Akwa Ibom State government has said it will set up a high-powered commission of enquiry to examine the causes of Saturday’s building collapse at Reigners Bible Church International in Uyo, the state capital.

Many worshippers died while several were injured.

In a state-wide broadcast, Governor Udom Emmanuel said he was in the church when the incident occurred. The governor said he supervised the rescue and evacuation of the injured to hospital.

He said: “A high-powered panel of enquiry is being constituted to ascertain the factors leading to collapse of the church building, with a view to forestalling a recurrence of any such incident and bringing to book any person found to have compromised professional standards in the construction of the building.”

Emmanuel commiserated with families of the victims.

The governor pledged that his administration will pay the medical bills of the injured.

He appealed to the citizens to remain calm and pray for those in critical condition in hospital.

Urging the Christian community to pray, Emmanuel advised the people to avoid speculation because the situation was getting the best attention.

He said: “I supervised the rescue operation and evacuation of the injured to hospital. I directed all emergency organisations and agencies of government and corporate organisations, especially construction companies, to be involved in the exercise. They acted promptly, and I commend them.”

  • NCS probes incident with FAAN staff

NCS probes incident with FAAN staff

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is probing the clash involving its officer and an official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), over right-of-way near the Palace Gate of the Cargo Terminal.

The probe, according to the spokesperson of the NCS Airport Command, Thelma Williams, would establish the veracity of the claim by FAAN official that a Customs officer attacked him near the Palace Gate over right-of-way.

She said preliminary findings by Customs showed that the officer was not trying to enter the Palace Gate as alleged by the FAAN staff.

But the officer made a turn towards the Hajj Camp axis of the road, when the FAAN staff, blocked his car.

She said the Customs officer was not taken to the Airport Police Station over the matter, but reported officially.

Williams said it was important to clear the air on the matter because of the rumour that the Customs officer beat up the FAAN staff and damaged his car.

She said: “At no time did our officer try or attempt to access the monument gate as being alleged. Rather, the officer veered off the road to drop off a friend only to be barricaded by a FAAN staff in the company of four FAAN workers.

“He tried to inquire the reason for the barricade and this led to an argument which culminated into a scuffle.

“There was never a point that our officer was taken to the police station as reported in the press. The incident was a misunderstanding of right of use of way on the Airport Boulevard.”
