  • 21 wedding guests killed in India road accident – Police

Police on Wednesday said 21 members of a group travelling to a wedding in central India were killed when the small truck in which they were travelling fell off a bridge into a dry river bed.

Senior administration official Dilip Kumar said at least 29 others were injured in the accident late Tuesday in Madhya Pradesh state’s Sidhi district.

Kumar said the victims, mostly family and friends of the groom, were travelling to the wedding in Pamaria village when their mini-truck swerved off the Jogdaha bridge and fell about 50 to 60 feet down into the Sone river bed.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan has announced aid of 200,000 rupees (about 3,044 dollars) each for the kin of the deceased and 50,000 rupees each to the injured.

Tens of thousands of people are killed in road crashes in India every year.

The accidents are mostly blamed on poorly maintained roads and vehicles or negligent driving.

  • Facebook alerts users affected by Cambridge Analytica scandal

Facebook would start informing its users on Monday if their information “may have been’’ improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.

Cambridge Analytica is a consultancy suspected of improperly using the data of as many as 87 million people.

In a statement, Facebook said that 70.6 million people affected were based in the U. S.

Up to 2.7 million Facebook users in the EU were affected, with another two million affected in the Philippines and Indonesia.

Other countries affected include Mexico, Canada, India, Brazil, Vietnam and Australia, according to Facebook.

In a further effort to improve transparency after the scandal, Facebook would send all 2.2 billion of its users a notice that would allow them to see what apps they use and what data they are sharing with those apps.

The company said this would allow people to shut off the apps completely or turn off third-party access to their apps.

Cambridge Analytica is at the centre of a debate over whether it used the personal data of millions to influence the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the Brexit referendum.

“I started Facebook, and at the end of the day I’m responsible for what happens on our platform,’’ Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said. “I’m serious about doing what it takes to protect our community.’’

Zuckerberg is set to testify before U.S. lawmakers this week.

  • Video: Woman publicly flogged 100 times by husband for eloping

An Indian woman was tied to a tree and flogged  100 times in public by her husband for eloping with another man in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district.

Hindustan Time, report that the woman’s husband, a former panchayat (village council) head and his son were arrested after a video clip of the incident was widely circulated on social media and through messaging apps. Hindustan Times could not independently verify the authenticity of the video clip.

The incident occurred on March 10 at Launga village, about 400 km from state capital Lucknow and the flogging was on the order of the village council.

Acording to Bulandshahr superintendent of police Praveen Ranjan Singh said police registered a case against 18 people, 12 of them unidentified, after receiving a copy of the video clip.

Indian Police contacted the woman, said to be in her late 20s, at her parents’ house on Wednesday night.

“Former pradhan Shersingh, his son Shravan and woman’s husband Shaudan Singh have been arrested and raids are underway to arrest other accused,” said Singh.

The 73-second video clip, apparently shot with a mobile phone, purportedly shows the saree-clad woman’s hands tied to an overhead branch of a tree and repeatedly hit with what appeared to be a leather belt by a man in a green shirt and a jacket. The woman could be heard grunting and screaming after each hit.

The video also shows a large crowd of men watching the beating and some of them can even be heard berating the woman.

Police said the panchayat wanted to “teach a lesson to the woman”.

In her complaint to police, the woman admitted to eloping with her neighbour Dharmendra Lodhi on March 5 and staying at the house of one of his relatives in another village.

After five days, a group of people from Launga convinced the couple to return to their village.

Police said Shersingh and his supporters convened a kangaroo court and ordered her public flogging.

Some of the villagers had objected to the punishment and asked the former pradhan to stop it but they were abused and asked to leave the place.

After the beating, the woman was dragged into a room where Shersingh and his supporters allegedly molested her and asked to keep silent. The woman also accused Shersingh of asking his men to make a video of the incident so that others could see the consequences of eloping.

  • Countdown to XXI Commonwealth Games: India, Canada are Nigeria’s threats in wrestling, Akuh admits

Coach Purity Akuh has admitted that India and Canada remain Nigeria’s greatest threats at the XXI Commonwealth Games holding in Gold Coast, Australia.

Akuh, however, assured that with the training the Nigerian wrestlers are undergoing in Yenogoa, Bayelsa, the team has the wherewithal to do well at the Games.

He stated that this year’s Commonwealth Games would be exciting and competitive considering the quality of wrestlers favoured to win gold medals. “We believe and hope that we can do better than our last outing because we have quality wrestlers who are also world class in their various cadres.

“For now, we have been training very hard in Bayelsa and the athletes are all in high spirit. But I must also acknowledge that wrestlers from India and Canada are not pushovers in the girls’ freestyle event because they are also teams to be reckoned with. We won’t be complacent but continue to work hard while hoping that God will reward our efforts,” Akuh added.

Akuh, who was adjudged the best coach at the 2017 Nigeria Sport Award, acknowledged the technical input of the President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Daniel Igali, saying, “Igali has been helping out in camp. As an Olympian, Igali has been encouraging the team by watching training sessions and adding his own inputs,” he stated.

He added: “All the athletes have been given the mandate to make sure they watch videos of their possible opponents and we can all come together to analyse the videos to see areas where they can build on that will give them an edge over their opponents at the Games.”

  • Navigating the Career Maze in India

Navigating the Career Maze in India

“It’s a woman’s world,” said Sairee Chahal. She is the founder and CEO of SHEROES, a digital platform that works towards creating and enhancing flexible work options for women from all walks of life.

Chahal has revolutionised the job scene for woman with this venture (formerly called Fleximoms), based in Noida, a suburban city of Delhi. She believes that a career is a maze rather than a ladder, and her mission is to help millions of women navigate it through all stages of their lives.

She is a lifelong entrepreneur who started her professional career while in college before co-founding her first startup which was the world’s first newspaper for Mariners in 1999, with operations in India, Philippines and Cyprus. Recognised globally for her achievements, Chahal’s honours include Devi Award winner, Femina Achievers Award, Cartier Award, Editor’s Choice for L’Oreal Femina Women’s Award and Most Powerful Women in Indian Business. Frustrated by the gender disparity in India, she created SHEROES in 2013.

“We have designed a support ecosystem that women can leverage to grow in their careers, relationships and other aspects of their lives,” she said. So far, the digital platform has directly helped one million women with their career paths and work-life balance, and it aims to reach 100 million more in the next five years.

A member of the SHEROES community can join as a job seeker, go on to interact with a mentor, identify her course of action, use the career resources to acquire an additional skill set and explore job possibilities. Established professionals can share their experiences, offer peer-to-peer mentor support and even post job offers.

The SHEROES app is gaining popularity and offers unique features such as a dedicated helpline for one-to-one counselling, operated by a team of counsellors and coaches who speak to women and offer them support, advice and resources.

India has made international headlines these past few years for cases of extreme sexual violence and discrimination. True to form SHEROES hasn’t shied away from doing its part to tackle such issues. “Through our communities and helpline we got a deeper understanding of the depth of harassment that women experience in the workplace. Our product SHE is a comprehensive prevention-based approach offered to businesses, comprising continuous trainings, compliance measures and a corporate helpline, covering all aspects of work – remote work, offsites, online communication and everyday work culture. Our approach is to look at influencing mindsets in a proactive way as opposed to handling cases ones they have escalated greatly,” shared the founder.

“Initially it was difficult for me to make a place for myself as a woman,” said Chahal, who is also a mother. “Women’s products and services have fallen into a ‘pink’ bucket. Persuading stakeholders to expand their thinking around this space in a way that it deeply benefits women was a challenge. But today, the tables have turned, with more businesses, thought leaders, and women themselves embracing this shift.”

As for other women considering starting their own projects, she offered this advice: “Start a business because that’s what who you are and because you want to make a difference. Don’t start a business to make money, because money could come much later than with a job. Start it for the right reason – to solve a problem, build a product, build a solution. And do something that you are passionate about.”

  • Surgeons in India remove world’s largest brain tumour

Surgeons in India remove world’s largest brain tumour

Surgeons in India, Mumbai, have removed a 1.87-kg brain tumour from a 31-year-old man, saying it to be the largest in the world.

The surgery lasted for seven hours at the Nair Hospital.

News of the procedure was made public recently after the hospital ensured the surgery was successful as the patient, Santlal Pal, had recovered, doctors at the facility told dpa Thursday.

“The tumour was so big, it appeared there was another head mounted on top of the patient’s head,” Srikanth Balasubramaniam, a senior surgeon who was part of the operating team said by phone from Mumbai.

“The surgery was challenging because of the sheer size of the tumour and because there were huge arteries going into the tumour.”

“We checked on records that say the previous record was of removing a 1.4-kg brain tumour, also in Mumbai,” he added.

The tumour had made Pal lose his vision and had also rendered him anaemic.

Doctors said he should gradually regain his sight and health.

Pal, a shopkeeper, had been living with the tumour for three years.

He had been turned away from three hospitals who said the tumour was inoperable.

The surgery was complicated as Pal was anaemic and needed 11 units of blood during the operation.

“Such tumours are rare and pose quite a challenge due to blood loss. Managing the patient requires a lot of planning, team skill and monitoring,” Balasubramaniam said.

  • How choice of soup helps solve India murder case – Police

How choice of soup helps solve India murder case – Police

The murder of a man and an attempt to steal his identity was uncovered when the impersonator chose vegetarian food at a hospital, police in southern India said Wednesday.

Family members of Sudhakar Reddy were surprised when “he” refused non-vegetarian food at a hospital in Hyderabad where he was admitted after an acid attack, local police official Kamleswar Shingvenar said.

The family complained to the police that he may be a different person, leading authorities to the alleged murderers, Shingvenar said.

Sudhakar’s wife, Swathi Reddy, and her lover Rajesh Ajakole have now been accused of the murder in the town of Nagarkurnool in Telangana state.

According to police investigations, the lovers, Swati Reddy and Rajesh Ajakole, allegedly killed Swathi’s husband Sudhakar Reddy on the night of Nov. 26 and disposed of his body in a local forest. In an attempt to stage an attack, they then poured acid on the male lover Rajesh Ajakole’s face.

Ajakole, his face swathed in bandages, posed as Sudhakar and Swathi, a trained nurse, told her husband’s family he had been attacked at their home by intruders and needed plastic surgery.

They admitted him to a hospital in Hyderabad for treatment, police said, but Sudhakar ‘s family members were suspicious as his height and body structure seemed different.

When Rajesh Ajakole refused non-vegetarian food at the hospital, including mutton soup, Sudhakar’s family lodged a complaint with the police as he had apparently liked non-vegetarian food.

Swathi was arrested Sunday and Rajesh Reddy would be arrested once he is discharged from the hospital, Shingvenar said.
