Police arrest man for molestation of 17-year- old actress

Indian police have arrested a 39-year-old businessman for the alleged molestating of a teen Bollywood actress aboard a flight from Delhi to Mumbai.

“We have arrested the accused late Sunday night in Mumbai. He has been booked under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act besides other sections of the Indian Penal Code,” Mumbai Police official Lata Shirsat told the media Monday.

The 17-year-old actress whose acclaimed young portrayal of Indian wrestler Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan-starrer movie Dangal won her national award, took to social media late Saturday night to narrate her ordeal on board private airline Vistara’s flight.

In the video post, she alleged that a male co-passenger had rubbed his foot on her neck and back while sitting behind her on the flight, prompting Indian authorities to order a probe.

Police or Vistara, which operated the flight where the alleged incident took place late Saturday night, have not disclosed the name of offender.

However, local media has identified the accused as Vikas Sachdev.

Sachdev’s wife Divya has claimed that the incident was nothing but an accident and that her husband was tired and upset as his uncle died in Delhi.

“My husband told me that he had been sleeping when his leg accidentally touched her (the actress’s) hand; he apologized to her for that.

“My husband respects women. Because of this incident, my entire family is disturbed. We want justice,” she told a local newspaper.

Vistara has apologised to the actress for what she experienced on its flight and said that it has “zero tolerance” for such behaviour, assuring her of a detailed investigation into the serious allegations.

  • Police arrest three for abduction, rape of Indian film actress

Indian police have arrested three people in connection with the alleged kidnapping and gang rape of a popular film actress in the southern state of Kerala last week.

“We have so far nabbed three persons, the driver of the actress and two others in the case. However, the main accused is still on the run,” a senior police official said Tuesday.

He added: “We have identified the main accused as the former driver of the actress and raids are being conducted to nab him.”

The incident took place late Friday night.

The film actress alleged that three persons took turns to rape her inside her own car that they had waylaid while she was on her way to dub a film.

The crime shocked the film fraternity in Kerala and sparked massive outrage in India, with many taking to social media to vent out their anger.

The Kerala government has assured that all the perpetrators of the heinous crime will be brought to justice at the earliest.

The 2012 brutal and fatal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men on a moving bus in Delhi had forced the Indian government to introduce stricter laws to deal with crimes against women.

Burglars broke into Satyarthi’s empty flat in south Delhi Monday night, RK Singh, an officer at the local Kalkaji police station, said.

Satyarthi’s son discovered the theft when he visited the flat on Tuesday morning.

“It appears to be a forced entry, that investigations were at a preliminary stage and the intruder had not yet been identified,’’ the official said.

“Some jewellery and electronic goods have also been stolen, we are still assessing what is missing,’’ the official said.

The Nobel laureate is currently attending a conference in the United States.
