    IPOB: Not again

A rump of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has threatened to resume the enforcement of the Monday sit-at-home which was started over four years ago as a way to force the federal government to heed the call for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, then detained by the government of late President Muhammadu Buhari. IPOB grew out, from the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). IPOB has itself mutated, even though the mutants have no new name, known to the public.

The recent threat is a reaction to the effort by the governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, to stop the wasteful sit-at-home on Mondays which IPOB used to draw attention to the trial of Nnamdi Kanu who has now been jailed for terrorism related charges. The group initially enforced the order on the days Kanu went to court, but eventually included every Monday, to push their campaign. According to Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s lawyer, his principal had since ordered a stop of the sit-at-home, but some of his followers remained defiant.

One of the leaders of the mutants, Simeon Ekpa, has been jailed in Finland for terrorism. This writer was particularly irked about Ekpa’s style of making light the consequences of his messages in the region. In one video, he was dancing and said he was enjoying himself, while his detractors were claiming he was under detention, which showed the so-called fight for Biafra was a joke for him. The cavalier manner he treated the grave issue of the deaths and mayhem in the southeast resulting from his actions showed he didn’t care a hoot about the so-called struggle.

Before they were jailed, Ekpa had openly defied Kanu over the latter’s order to end the sit-at-home. With Kanu in detention, Ekpa had assumed leadership even while pretending to be acting in the interest of the Kanu. Of course, there appears to be cells operating independently of the leadership, dishing out instructions and countermanding orders from the IPOB leadership. The results have been killing of the ordinary persons, by what came to be regarded as the unknown gunmen.

At the height of his confrontation with the Nigerian state, Kanu with tremendous gift of garb, framed the fight as one between the quest for an independent republic of Biafra, and the hegemonic powers that ruled Nigeria. A bombastic fellow, Kanu held his followers captive, with eloquent denunciation of the challenges bedeviling Nigeria. Courted and cult-ed, he became a folk hero, amongst the downtrodden and disposessed, in the region. Soon, some members of the intelligentsia and the business class also warmed up to him and that made him more daring.

Like Ralph Uwazurike of MASSOB, to tantalize his supporters, Kanu began to make promises he had no way of keeping. He gave dates and events that will culminate into the birth of Biafra republic. As if in a conspiracy, the government of late President Muhammad Buhari, in rhetoric and in action, gave the impression that Igbos of southeast were dispensable in determining the future of Nigeria. And as if in concert, terrorism by herdsmen under Buhari, added a new dimension to the Nigerian fault lines.

Those who hitherto were dismissive of a purported ethnic/religious agenda, under the government began to believe that something was really afoot. In remote villages across the southeast, and of course other parts of Nigeria, herdsmen clutching AK47 rifles, became the symbol that Armageddon was near the gate. So, when Kanu said that there are plans for the Fulani ethnic group to take over other parts of the country by force, even the doubters believed. Like a prophet whose last prediction came to pass, Kanu was emboldened to make more predictions and issue more threats.

With Kanu’s image getting far larger than those elected to govern at the federal and the state levels in the southeast, it was definite, as the pre-eminent Tatalo Alamu, of this newspaper would say, that something had to give. There are several conspiracy theories as to how Kanu was rendered back to Nigeria from Kenya by the Buhari regime. There are many political leaders in the region, who have been smeared with the tag of saboteur, for allegedly rendering Kanu back to Nigeria.

The Buhari regime despite its best efforts could not bring the trial of Kanu at the Federal High Court Abuja, to an end. Kanu was able to outfox the regime for about four years, with all manner of legal gymnastics, as some have called it. He changed his lawyers many times, defended himself a few times, and forced changes of judges at other times. While that was going on, the economy of the southeast was haemorrhaging profusely. The economic loss is projected in several billions of naira, the loss of life in monumental proportions, and the dislocation of social life, very substantial.

With the Buhari regime and its concomitant idiosyncrasies ending in 2023, many thought the challenges associated with the crisis would dissipate. Leaders of the southeast tried to outdo each other, to position to claim credit, believing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would release Kanu from the gulag. Kanu even toned down his rhetoric, in the earnest hope that the new regime’s renewed hope agenda would grant him freedom. Instead of a political solution, the courts went for a legal solution as Justice James Omotosho ignored all legal mischiefs, and went ahead to conclude the trial and jail Kanu, for life.

With a mischievous obiter dictum that Kanu should be jailed in any prison that pleases the powers that be, he was sent to the Sokoto Correctional Centre, the seat of the Caliphate that he had been lampooning in his rise to prominence. In a tinge of irony, like a youth corps member, it seems he was sent to learn the ways and means of Fulani, so he can become a better pan-Nigerian. With Kanu put away in faraway, Sokoto, many have been wondering whether IPOB would continue to dissipate and eventually disappear.

But the ever loquacious spirit-man, Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, seems to have a different agenda. He is giving the impression that IPOB is a phoenix. He has called for renewal of the sit-at-home agenda, which has never augured well for the region. This writer urges those pushing for the sit-at-home order to continue to please abandon a strategy that has hurt the southeast more that it has benefited it and hope that President Tinubu would release Kanu and help the region to recuperate. The southeast has suffered enough, from the Buhari-era crisis.

Of course, while the southeast was haemorrhaging, the national economy was bleeding.  Governor Soludo, who made the contested order, has threatened traders with grave consequences if they fail to resume on Mondays. This column hopes he has put plans in place to secure those willing to work on Mondays from criminals masquerading as liberation fighters.

Operatives kill four gunmen in Enugu

No fewer than four unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed militia, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), have been neutralized by a crack team of security operatives in Enugu State.

The security squad, comprising the Nigerian Army, the Police, and the DSS personnel, also recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from the gunmen while some of them fled into the bush with various degrees of gunshot injuries.

The criminal elements were intercepted in the early hours of yesterday and overpowered by operatives at Eha Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area while hatching sinister plans of attacking some parts of the state, including the metropolis.

It was gathered that an ESN commander, who had been operating from neigbouring states, was arrested after hours of intense gun duel between the operatives and the men of the underworld.

According to the sources, the notorious ESN commander who had been on the wanted list led the security operatives to their hideouts where they stashed their arms, charms and other dangerous objects.

Meanwhile, the two security personnel who sustained minor injuries during the exchange of fire are presently receiving treatment and have been confirmed to be in stable conditions.

It would be recalled that the Enugu State governor, Barr. Peter Mbah, had vowed to flush out criminal elements and hoodlums behind insecurity in the state through the ongoing security reforms which included establishment of the Distress Response Squad (DRS), massive investment in the state’s Command and Control Centre, surveillance security system, and modern technology aimed at intercepting and eliminating all forms of security threats.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command has accused the proscribed IPOB/ESN of been responsible for the bombing of Orlu International Market on Tuesday.

Two persons were killed in the process of detonating the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while several others were reportedly wounded.

The Command said in a statement yesterday by its spokesman, Henry Okoye that two suspected members killed in the process of detonating the IED were members of IPOB/ESN.

“On Tuesday, two young men, suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN, were carrying an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on a motorcycle with the intention of planting it at Orlu International Market, near Mbari Okporo. Fortunately, the device detonated before they could carry out their plan, killing both individuals instantly and preventing what could have been a far more tragic outcome.

  • IPOB takes independence agitation to UN

THE proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has taken what it called the grievances of the Igbo to the United Nations (UN).

It said on Thursday that its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, vowed before the UN that Biafra’s case would no longer be ignored.

He led a delegation to a series of meetings with various UN agencies and officials in Geneva.

IPOB’s spokesman Emma Powerful said in a statement that Kanu demanded urgent action against alleged rights abuses.

He also spoke on the need to support “Biafrans’” self-determination as enshrined in law, statute and various UN conventions.

IPOB said: “Every issue concerning our people is now before the various arms and agencies of the UN. Our case will no longer be ignored.”

The statement said Kanu was accompanied by his deputy, Mazi Uche Mefor, Head of Directorate of State, Mazi Chika Edoziem, and others.

IPOB said Kanu also raised the issue of the continued illegal detention of Omoleye Sowore, the alleged persecution of the members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria led by Sheikh El-Zakzaky, among others.

The statement said: “Every issue concerning our people as mentioned by Kanu ranges from the incessant killing of Biafrans in their own land by terrorist herdsmen to extortion and killing of Biafran motorcyclists and commercial drivers over refusal to give N50 bribe…”

It said Kanu also raised the issues of “systematic oppression and economic emasculation of the Biafran, illegal detention of unarmed agitators, flagrant contempt for court orders, and incessant abduction and extrajudicial killings of IPOB family members”.

It said all the issues form the basis of the agitation for the separate state of Biafra, “which was existing before the Lugardian amalgamation of 1914.”

The statement added: “Exploiting the rights of indigenous people to self-determination as provided by the UN charter 2007, Mazi Kanu has conscientiously pursued freedom for the oppressed people of Biafra.”

  • Police accuse IPOB of using blackmail to win Igbo sympathy

THE proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been accused of whipping up sentiments to win the sympathy of the Ndigbo by its claim that the police were planning to arrest the father of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Debunking the claim, the Abia State Police Commissioner (CP), Ene Okon, said the group was blackmailing the police by raising the alarm about the presence of policemen and other security personnel around Kanu’s home.

The IPOB claimed also that the target of the security agencies was to arrest Kanu’s father, who reportedly arrived his compound almost two years after his compound was invaded by soldiers.

But, Okon said the police have no such plans.

Also on Monday, the Labour and Employment Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige, and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nze Modestus Umenzekwe, reminded members that IPOB was set up as a non-violent organisation.

In a telephone interview with our reporter on Monday, CP Okon said: “What IPOB has given to you people is completely false. As a matter of fact, we received intelligence report that IPOB is going to have a meeting in Nnamdi Kanu’s house.

“They prepared also for a protest over the alleged killing of their members during the Operation Python Dance and as an organisation that is charged with maintenance of law and order and to ensure peace, based on the intelligence that we gathered, we have to fortify the already existing police points within the area, which has been there for the past two years.

“All what we did is to put in more number of police in that area to ensure that there is peace . No policeman entered Nnamdi Kanu’s house or his father’s house.

“IPOB is pushing out propaganda to blackmail the police. The police didn’t even know whether Nnandi Kanu’s father is at home or not. Under what offence will the police go to arrest Nnamdi Kanu’s father; a 90-years-old man?

“If police have anyone to arrest, it is Nnamdi Kanu because he has been declared wanted and not the father.

“It is a mere propaganda or blackmail to win the sympathy of the Igbo by the IPOB. Remember that IPOB has been proscribed by law and they remain proscribed.

“Any of their activities and gathering is illegal. If we get intelligence of their gathering which will disrupt the peace of the area, I don’t think that we should sit back and look at them disturbing the peace of the area.”

Ngige and Umenzekwe recalled how IPOB was was set up as a violent organisation.

Speaking with The Nation in Awka, the one-time Anambra governor said that IPOB was registered by the former Ohaneze Ndigbo President-General, the late Dr. Dozie Ikedife, and other big wigs from the Southeast.

Ngige, who once represented the Anambra Central Senatorial District, noted that what was going on in the group was not part of the work plan.

The minister said he visited the United States (U.S.) and was welcomed well by IPOB members, instead of attacking him, adding that they knew he fed them when he held the fort as governor.

He said the proscribed IPOB should follow the workplan when it was formed instead of being a menace to the society, adding that the Shi’iite group was also  proscribed by the Federal Government and not only IPOB.

The Igbo leader chided some evangelists for “killing Ndigbo” through what he called misinformation by them on the pulpits, warning that they should desist from such act.

Chief Umenzekwe said what Ndigbo needed was peace and not war.

He told The Nation: “We have some of our leaders as ministers at Abuja and we need to follow them. Sen Ike Ekweremadu is one of the Igbo leaders and he has served this country well as deputy Senate president. Why should IPOB attack him outside our shores.

“Let us queue behind our leaders and apply to avoid violence because violence will not bring peace. We have fought war in the past we don’t want any war again.

“There are more civil ways of making our agitations known. The issue of harassing him abroad is wrong and condemnable and we will never support that from IPOB or any other group.

  • PDP chief: Nnamdi Kanu a coward

A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has described threats by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to attack Southeast governors as cowardly and an act of desperation.

PDP Chairman in Ebonyi State Onyekachi Nwebonyi, in a statement on Monday, said Kanu was not a freedom fighter but a businessman out to make money from Igbo politicians and businessmen.

He said real freedom fighters don’t run away but stay and fight to achieve their aim.

The statement reads: “The threat by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to attack governors of the Southeast, and particularly Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, whenever they travel abroad is punk and cowardly.

“It is a threat out of desperation by people who thought they could use the Biafra agenda for self enrichment. Unfortunately, the shenanigan did not pay off on the home front, though the Igbo in the Diaspora fall prey.

“IPOB is not fighting for the actualisation of Biafra and the name of the organisation suggests no such objective. Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the group, is just out to make money from Igbo politicians and businessmen. He had thought he would get the governors and other politicians in the Southeast to fund his activities but that was not happening. His recent approach of attacking Igbo politicians who travel abroad arose from that unmet expectation.

“He is not genuine in his agitation. There are valiant men at home who could support him if he is genuine, but he chose to rely on miscreants whom he can easily deceive. If Nnamdi Kanu is a genuine freedom fighter, he should have taken a cue from notable freedom fighters, some of who paid the supreme price for their cause. Kanu should have stayed back to press home his demand for the emancipation of the marginalised people of Biafra. That is why I call him a coward. He should also remember that Igbo are not the only people of Biafra.

“And again, mentioning the governor of Ebonyi State for attack abroad shows that what the group wants is far from the emancipation of Igbo people. It is laughable that instead of Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB to direct their vengeance of the Operation Python Dance 2 towards President Muhammadu Buhari and the Army, they ungratefully and cowardly chose to attack the very persons who ensured Kanu was released from prison. That is really cowardly and barbaric.

“Governor Umahi does not junket foreign lands ignoring his people. The transformation he has given Ebonyi State clearly shows that if all the governors of the Southeast had acted in the same way over the years, the region would have been a destination of some sort by now.”

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (ONYC) says IPOB has lost the Igbo consciousness.

Read Also: Nnamdi Kanu: A continuing tragedy

It said IPOB’s bid to have a candidate from Northeast win the 2019 presidential election, which was not met, emboldened its anger against Igbo governors.

A statement yesterday by Ohanaeze’s Deputy President-General Obinna Achionye, reads: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide will expose all the commercial activities of IPOB, as it has done more damage to Ndigbo than it appears to salvage the situation the Igbo currently find themselves since 2015.

“IPOB lost Igbo consciousness before the 2019 elections as it was doing the political bid of politicians outside Igbo land, which they started with a Northeast presidential candidate. IPOB’s popularity before the 2019 elections waned when it destroyed its members’ Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) and plotted the fall of Governors David Umahi, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Okezie Ikpeazu.

“We urge the Southeast governors to disregard any kangaroo committee set up to interface between them and the IPOB. There is no reason for a backyard settlement until IPOB openly apologises to Ndigbo.

“When the Southeast governors called its bluff over its antics, IPOB connived with enemies of Igbo to stage a failed revolution protest which was unsuccessful in the region. Now, they have resorted to a violent approach to do the bidding of a presidential hopeful from outside Igboland to bring down all presidential hopefuls in Igboland ahead of 2023.

“We know how a former minister from Anambra State persuaded a northern presidential candidate to use IPOB’s nuisance to hoodwink Igbo into voting for the politician after visiting Nnamdi Kanu in Israel. Nevertheless, we urge Southeast governors not to negotiate with Nnamdi Kanu. Their blackmail and settlement strategies are dead on arrival.”

  • I leave IPOB leader’s threat to God and the law, says Nwodo

NATIONAL President of apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Nnia Nwodo, says he has left the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to God and the law.

Nwodo’s remark was contained in an open letter to Ndigbo concerning an online video in which Kanu made series of allegations against him.

“I have noted the threats to my life from the IPOB leader.  I leave that to God and the law,” Nwodo wrote.

Calling on South East leaders to condemn the IPOB leader’s action, Nwodo said: “Ndigbo, I have championed your cause with every amount of energy in me.  I have worked with little encouragement or assistance. Thank God my team and I have elevated Ohanaeze Ndigbo to an enviable status.  It is dangerous for our solidarity and ultimate success if we allow these vituperative outbursts to truncate our solidarity.

“In spite of all I say, I salute Nnamdi for his courage and his persistence in upholding our case but I urge you all to rise up and condemn what is condemnable.  Speak up and shame those who would want us to split into pieces and destroy our resolve to fight as a united people.

As a father, I will always forgive an erring child but not without drawing his attention to a misdemeanor which should never be repeated.

  • ‘No IPOB member arrested in Ebonyi’

THE Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Saturday, said no member of the group was arrested in Ebonyi State.

The Ebonyi State Police Command, had on Wednesday, confirmed the arrest of 15 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

It said the suspects were arrested at a bush at Amasiri in the Afikpo North local government area of the state on Tuesday by men of the Nigeria Police and other security agents while allegedly planning to hold their 2019 summit in the state.

But IPOB, in a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said the report came to it as a surprise as it had no event in the state that would necessitate the gathering of people on a large scale.

The group maintained that it was not in the habit of celebrating any anniversary either in Biafraland or in the diaspora since inception.

In the statement which read in part, the group said, “Our attention has been drawn to the purported mass arrest of supposed members of IPOB in Ebonyi State by Governor Dave Umahi and his Fulani handlers who mischievously labelled those they abducted as Biafrans planning an anniversary.

“This attempt by Dave Umahi to prove to his Fulani masters that he is anti-Biafra and IPOB has led him to round-up and illegally lock up land owners in Ebonyi State under the pretext of fighting Biafra agitators but of which the true intention is to pave the way for Fulani herdsmen to take over community lands for their RUGA settlement in the state.”

  • Don’t allow Kanu, IPOB launch terrorism in your countries, concerned citizens tell US, UK others

Following the recent modus operandi deployed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in foreign countries, the Concerned Citizens Forum (CCF) has alerted the United States, United Kingdom and other nations to be wary of the terrorist group.

IPOB’s nefariousness reached an all-new low when they attacked immediate past Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in Germany and even threatened to inflict similar ordeal on President Muhammadu Buhari in Japan.

In a letter by National President, Princess Ajibola and addressed to the US’ Ambassador to Nigeria, W. Stuart Symington, dated Monday 26th August, the CCF warned of an impending terrorist movement if not properly checked in the US and other nations.

The concerned citizens reminded these countries that IPOB is a terrorist group in Nigeria, with a long history of intolerance, violent protests, disregard for constitutional authorities and bloodshed.

According to the group, if proactive steps are not taken, IPOB could escalate to another Al-Qaeda terrorist group of some sort, wreaking havoc across the world.

These concerned Nigerians, therefore, advised the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries to forthwith outlaw the group to ensure the safety of its citizens as well as foreigners, especially Nigerians.

    Below is the full letter

The Concerned Citizens of Forum wishes to bring to the attention of the United States of America the recent threats posed by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as evident in the attack of a member of the National Assembly in Germany.

The attack and the subsequent threats issued by the leader of the terrorist group Nnamdi Kanu calls for concern from all critical stakeholders devoted to the entrenchment of peace all over the world.

The Ambassador may wish to recall that the nefarious activities of IPOB in Nigeria have led to deaths of innocent people, amongst whom are women and children. Save for the timely intervention of the Nigerian Security Agencies, Nigeria would have been engulfed in crisis by IPOB, whose main motive was to cause the disintegration of Nigeria.

The Ambassador may also wish to recall that the Nigerian authorities indeed made it clear that the activities of IPOB in Nigeria were with the active support of some terrorist network around the world.

In Nigeria, IPOB has attempted to constitute itself into a parallel government. It has continuously instigated the people against the constituted authorities through hate speeches, organization of violent protests, attacking security agents, subjecting innocent people to torture and a flagrant disregard for the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Dear Ambassador, IPOB is by every inch a terrorist organization that operates terrorist cells covertly in many countries of the world, including the United States of America. This much has been stated by the leader of the group Nnamdi Kanu who is standing trial in court for terrorism-related offences in Nigeria, and he jumped bail.

Dear Ambassador, IPOB, as a terrorist organization has carried on with recklessness. They have maimed and harassed innocent people going about their normal businesses. They have also tagged those that do not share in their ideology as imbeciles and gorillas. They have attacked critical government infrastructures intending to cripple the Nigerian economy. They have buried people killed in shallow graves. They have also vowed that Nigeria and indeed Nigerians would be attacked anywhere in the world. This much can be seen in the recent attack of a high ranking member of the legislative arm of government in Nigeria who escaped death by the whiskers in Germany.

IPOB has been indicted in Nigeria as aligning with foreign forces to cause political unrest in Nigeria. They have infiltrated young boys and girls with their ideology. They have also promised monetary rewards for information on the travel plans of governors and other high ranking government officials to attack them just like they did with Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Germany.

The Concerned Citizens Forum is consequently alarmed that if urgent and proactive steps are not taken to curtail the terrorist activities of IPOB around the world, the world might be faced with another Al-Qaeda terrorist group in the making.

This is especially so given the fact that the leader of IPOB has openly admitted that IPOB will continue to attack Igbo politicians, anywhere they go to in Canada, Germany, Australia, US, and the UK. This is also aside from the recent threat issued by IPOB to President Muhammadu Buhari who recently travelled to Japan.

Dear Ambassador, the threat posed by IPOB to world peace is glaring, and as such, it is required that all necessary measures be activated to curtail their nefarious activities in the interest of peace and tranquillity.

The safety of Nigerians and other innocent citizens of the world will be guaranteed if the United States of America begins the process of outlawing IPOB and its accomplices in the United States.

This is on the heels that intelligence reports indicate that IPOB has a strong base in the United States of America from where it coordinates its terrorist activities around the world.

Dear Ambassador, IPOB is indeed a threat to the world, and as such, its activities must be outlawed in the United States of America. The United States of America must rise to the occasion in this critical point of our existence to protect Nigerians living abroad and those traveling overseas from the threat posed by IPOB.

Dear Ambassador, the Concerned Citizens Forum is constrained to write you this letter in an attempt to bring to your notice of the threat posed by IPOB and as well as to remind the government of the United States of America of its role in the entrenchment of peace all over the world.

It is our firm belief that the United States of America would act fast in this regards before IPOB constitutes a threat to the world.

  • Insecurity: Army drills officers

Against the backdrop of insecurity in the land, the Army toughens its personnel in a competition for warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers. SUNNY NWANKWO, who covered the event at 14 Brigade Headquarters, Ohafia, Abia State, reports

One of the major challenges facing Nigeria across the six geo-political zones is insecurity. From militancy to insurgency, herdsmen attacks to banditry and agitation for secession by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the Army has been battling to ensure peace in the land while performing their statutory role of warding off external aggression.

This was why the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai directed heads of military formations across the country to ensure that their officers participated in the 2019 Inter-Brigade Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Competition.

In compliance with the directive, the leadership of the 82 Division of the Army with its headquarters in Enugu, Enugu State, has held the military competition at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks, 14 Brigade Headquarters, Ohafia, Abia State.

The participating personnel were drawn from various 82 Division’s Areas of Responsibility (AOR) participating in the exercise even though some of them just returned from the Northeast where they have been over the years, engaging the outlawed members of Boko Haram sect in severe gun battle.

The event provided the leadership of the 82 Division the opportunity to select the exceptional personnel among the participants that will represent the command at a similar event later in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The Inter-Brigade Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Competition for 82 Division held at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Barracks, 14 Brigade Headquarters, Ohafia, Abia State saw the personnel participating in Drill Competition, swimming competition which took place at Hotel Damgrete in Umuahia, shooting range competition which took place at the command headquarters of 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze in Imo State, Obstacle Crossing at the 14Brigade Headquarters, Ohafia, among other competitions.

The General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Major-General Abubakar Maikobi represented by his Chief of Staff Brigadier General Clement A. Atere at the closing ceremony of the exercise, extolled the Brigade for engaging in the training which he said would help enhance and improve their physical fitness, leadership qualities, discipline, efficiency, effectiveness, cooperation and esprit-de-corps that will prepare the warrant officers and senior non commission officers for more challenging tasks and responsibilities especially now that the country is bedeviled with series of security challenges.

According to Atere, Maikobi used the opportunity to congratulate the winning team and further commended the efforts of the officers and men of the Division for their professionalism.

The GOC also appreciated the support of the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen Tukur Y. Buratai for his contributions to the success of the competition.

He also appreciated commanders of various formations that participated in the competition for the timely preparation of their teams and equally commended other security agencies for the synergies and cooperation in ensuring that Abia State remains safe and peaceful.

The Special Guest of Honour, Abia State Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu ably represented by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Sir Ude Oko Chukwu extolled the Division for organising the competition especially by choosing 14 Brigade in Abia State as the host. He used the opportunity to congratulate the winning team and further commend the efforts of the officers and men of the Brigade for their professionalism in ensuring peace and safety of Abians especially at the just concluded 2019 General Elections in Abia State.

He said, “I want to conclude by commending the Commander 14 Brigade and his team of officers and men for organising this worthwhile competition.

“I want to also appreciate the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, other Services, the Nigeria Police and Para-Military Security Agencies for the synergy and cooperation in order to ensure Abia State remains safe and peaceful”. The Governor asserts.

At the end of the keenly contested competition, 34 Artillery Brigade came 4th with 240 points, 13 Brigade Akim Barracks, Calabar scored 340 points to emerge 3rd, the host Brigade came 2nd with 400 points while the 82 Division Garrison was the overall best with 420 points.

The highlight of the event includes an Award of Excellence to the Governor of Abia State by the General Officer Commanding 82 Division Enugu.

  • ‘Kanu’s reception in Canada proves Biafra’s restoration’

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has said the resounding reception accorded to its leader, Nnamdi Kanu in Canada, was a proof that the people were determined and committed to the pursuit of Biafra independence.

The group praised Biafran veterans and Igbo groups for the respect, honour and recognition given to its leader during the event.

A statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said Kanu had so far successfully mobilised and united Biafrans living in North America under one common purpose.

The statement reads: “The worldwide family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) congratulates IPOB family in Canada for the turn out and awesome reception given to our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on June 8 and 9 in Toronto.

“Biafrans living in the United States of America and Canada have proven through this visit and town hall meetings that our people are determined, united and committed to the pursuit of Biafra independence as undisputedly championed by IPOB.

“Special thanks to those who dedicated their time and energy in making sure that Kanu’s visit was successful. IPOB leadership also commend the enthusiasm, love and regard Biafrans across the board exhibited during the town hall meeting.”

The group pledged continued relentless march to its preordained destination of Biafra freedom, regardless of intimidation, arrest, killings and massacre orchestrated and designed to humiliate it.

“Kanu will continue to hold town hall meetings and private consultations in the coming weeks. His next stop is the city of Los Angeles, California, and from there to Houston, Texas, then Chicago and finally New York, where he will be rounding up this historic tour of North America.

“We urge Biafrans both home and in the Diaspora to continue to provide strong support and security for our leader during these times. IPOB High Command and Directorate of State (DOS) are working hard and will leave no stone unturned in our agitation for the total liberation of Biafra and other oppressed peoples in Nigeria,” Powerful added.
