  • Governors’ Forum organises induction for incoming governors

The Nigeria’s Governors Forum (NGF) Secretariat is organising a three-day Induction Programme for newly-elected and returning governors.

The programme, according to a statement issued by the NGF Secretariat, will commence from Monday 29th April to 1st May, 2019.

Also, a day summit has been scheduled for the wives of the governors as well so as to develop and utilize their platforms to address critical issues affecting their states.

The induction for the incoming and returning governors, according to a statement from the NGF Secretariat, “is aimed at supporting incoming governors to develop key governance and management skills that will enable them transit from campaigning to managing of the processes of governance.”

Other objectives of the induction include preparing governors to make the most of their transition from campaigning to governing and building bridges for effective leadership.

“Exposing governors to relevant contemporary national priorities in critical sectors of the economy and driving consensus on opportunities to achieve desired outcomes.

“This is aimed at generating conversation among the newly elected governors, respected national and international leaders, heads of national institutions and development partners, among others.”

Expected at the occasion are critical stakeholders, including current and past governors of Nigeria and the United States, to provide the opportunity for Nigerian governors to, not only network with national and global leaders, but also to gather useful information that will help them transit into their new roles as chief executives of states.

It is also expected that all the governors will, at the end of their induction, have their knowledge and skills honed on the nuances of governance to better equip them to hit the ground running

The NGF also stated that it “finds it imperative to highlight the task before governors and support them to create a workable framework that will aid them to achieve a smooth transition into their new administrations.”

A similar induction took place in 2011.

A new addition to the programme is the Governors’ Spouses’ Summit which is designed to be an introduction to public life for the spouses of newly elected and existing governors. It is expected that this event would bring about an avenue to discuss how the activities of governors’ spouses can best compliment the roles of governors in promoting good   governance   at   the   sub-national level. This summit is also envisaged to harness and promote best practices in the execution of pet projects.

The one-day summit is designed to build the capacity of governors’ spouses to develop and utilise their platforms to address critical issues affecting their states with specific focus on social intervention issues.

  • Women outclass men at UNILAG pharmacists’ induction

Women outclass men at UNILAG pharmacists’ induction

Female pharmacy graduands of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lagos (UNILAG),  stood tall at the 30th induction of the Faculty, which held last week at the main auditorium of the university.

The ladies had every reason to feel proud: Five of them bagged five out of the six first class grades recorded by the class of 138 new pharmacists.

Last session also, the eight distinctions in the faculty were claimed by female students.

Odunayo Abdulai was the overall best at last week’s event.  She bagged four out of the five awards given. A feat, she claimed, was made possible by God’ and the support of her classmates and family.

She said she had a balanced social and academic life in school and was always ready to teach others, as it helped her to learn more.

Miss Abdulai, who wanted to be a community pharmacist, advised National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)  and other health regulation agencies to pay closer attention to the import and administration of drugs to curb drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.

She said: “They should allow us who are trained and have sworn to the oath to do our job because that is why we received the training and nobody can take our place. There is a need to regulate the system from production even to distribution and conduct regular checks on medical service providers.”

Welcoming the participants at the induction, the Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof Olukemi Odukoya, dispensed the tenets of true education.

“Education is impossible without the habitual vision of greatness and of the three main aspects of university work, which include the advancement of knowledge, training men and women for professions and the enrichment of the lives of students,” she said.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)  of Healthplus Pharmacy and an alumnus of the faculty, Mrs Bukky George, spoke about the ingredients of successful entrepreneurship while delivering the keynote speech.

“A spoonful of talent, education and drive… be comfortable with who you are, do not pretend to be who culture or society demands, do not hold grudges, help others and stop taking things personally,” she said.

Mrs George charged the new pharmacists to have “big, hairy, audacious goals and do something ordinary in an extraordinary way”.

She also pledged N1 million for projects and equipment needed by the inductees in the near future.

Safety institute urges professionalism at induction

Graduating trainees of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) have received the best gift they could ever ask for: a thorough orientation on how not only to succeed in their jobs but also to ensure the safety of everyone.

At an induction session in Ikeja, Lagos, ISPON chiefs urged the graduating trainees to be devoted to their jobs and to discharge their duties with “dignity, discretion and honour, “ their focus being to “serve mankind”.

The President of the institute, Mr Shaw Fregene told the inductees to always observe the ethics of their profession, noting that it is by doing so that they uphold the institute in addition to serving their clients or employers better.

The institute draws some of its membership from a wide range of service providers and professionals including engineers, occupational hygienists, environmentalists, medical and health practitioners, fire fighter and security professionals.

“Our mission,” said Fregene, “is to achieve excellent safety performance of organisations and create safety awareness through information dissemination, courses, seminars, audits and publications, thus promoting, encouraging and improving occupational methods and procedures in the industries, public sector and institutions.”

Addressing the new members, the ISPON president urged that they update themselves in order to perform at their optimum. Fregene told them to attend meetings called by the institute, adding that they should equally participate in workshops and seminars “in order to succeed as safety professionals.”

In a paper, Dr Nicholas Okere, a member of ISPON, advised that private organisations, welders and small-scale entrepreneurs, and indeed every service provider, need to operate in healthy and safe environments.
