  • MDCN inducts 120 LAUTECH medical doctors

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has given its nod to fresh 120 medical doctors trained at the College of Health Sciences of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, to practise medicine and surgery.

The council’s Registrar, Dr. Tajudeen Adisa Sanusi, inducted the new doctors at the weekend on the college premises in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

He said reports about LAUTECH graduates were pleasant and encouraging.

He expressed worry about the incessant industrial actions among the institution’s workers.

Speaking to the guests, who included Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker Joshua Olagunju, the MDCN registrar urged LAUTECH visitors (Oyo and Osun governors) to fund the institution.

He noted that they had a good and highly promising product in the university.

Warning that council would not hesitate to close down any medical school which performs below standard, Sanusi advised the newly inducted doctors to be alive to their responsibilities and be truthful to the oaths they took.

The registrar said the new inductees’ profession is delicate as it is meant to ensure that people lead quality life.

The Provost of College of Health Sciences, Prof Samuel Sunday Taiwo, chronicled why the inductees, some of whom were admitted in 2008, stayed that long to be inducted.

He said: “The global best practice and training to produce high quality medical doctors and other healthcare personnel is hinged on ensuring seamless and uninterrupted academic activities that are usually anchored in the college and the teaching hospital. Our desire as a college is not to cause delay in the training of our students.

“However, when there are significant interruptions in the training programme, we have no choice than to extend the period of training in order to compensate for the period of interruptions.”

The vice-chancellor, Prof Adeniyi Gbadegesin, urged Osun and Oyo governors to increase their funding of LAUTECH.

He promised that lecturers and non-teaching workers in the university would continually display their commitment to turning out products that are able to advance the course of humanity in the nation’s march to stardom in diverse human endeavour.

  • 2015: CAC President inducts 1000 pastors

2015: CAC President inducts 1000 pastors

THE expansive auditorium of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Babalola Memorial International Miracle Camp, Ikeji Arakeji, was filled to the brim penultimate weekend. More than 1000 pastors filed out for ordination by the President of the Church, Pastor Abraham Akinosun.

Decked in designer’s suits of different colours, the ordinance, who had just concluded a one-year pastoral programme were formally welcomed into the ‘One fold, one Shepherd family.’

Clerics from across the country converged on the CAC Camp Ground, at Ikeji Arakeji, to begin a new adventure in the vineyard of God and the ministry.

It was a joyful occassion as the ordination was coming after years of embargo placed on such activities in the CAC fold.

With joy and happiness radiating, the pastors danced to the melodious renditions of the choir to appreciate the goodness of God.

One could not separate the mood of the occasion from the spirit of the festivities which beclouded the atmosphere of thanksgiving and praises, even as the auditorium was decorated with different Christmas trees and other ornaments synonymous with the Yuletide.

While lending his voice on the 2015 general elections, Pastor Akinosun said Nigerians should look on to God and be saved.

He said: “If our nation and those people we are going to vote for should look unto the Lord, the nation shall be saved and all the people therein

“But if we continue to go into the way that is not biblical, like killing and maiming because someone wants to rule, this is against God’s wish and the scripture.”

The cleric said politicians should learn from other nations where the interests of the citizens are of utmost importance to government that serves the people diligently.

Pastor Akinosun berated some politicians who are allegedly preparing for the coming elections as if they are going to war front.

He said: “We are going to vote and we are hearing of people stock-piling arms. We are not preparing for war; we are preparing to vote for credible people to be at the helms of affair. So, why should they be piling up arms?

“Our politicians should have a rethink and look unto God. It must not be a do-or-die affair. If someone fails now, another time, he may be called upon to come and rule. So, people should take politics as a game and play according to the rules.” Pastor Akinosun stressed.

Speaking on the role of the ordained pastors in ensuring a better society, the CAC leader said embargo has been placed on ordinations for a very long time because of the understanding that a lot have to be put into the training of pastors so as to contribute meaningfully to the society.

“You see this people; many of them have been working on churches without ordination; many of them have acquired knowledge; but we really want to train them as pastors so that, if the Church of God change for better, the society will be good for it,” Pastor Akinosun explained.

The cleric warned that the New Year may be a bad experience for the ungodly.

He said for those who look unto the Lord, the coming year will be filled with blessings and uniqueness.

“For those who looking unto God, they don’t need to fear, though we don’t know tomorrow, but if we know the God who knows tomorrow, then we will be rest assured that tomorrow will be good.”

Earlier in his message entitled: “The New Beginning” with text taken from the holy Bible, Second Corinthians, and Chapter five verse 17, Pastor Akinosun charged the newly-ordained to start living a new life.

According to him, as they have received a new training, the Holy Spirit must be in them to do the work always.

He condemned some Pastors who run after money and jettison their ministries and their duties with the Lord.

“Baba” as fondly called among the CAC family urged the new Pastors to live a life which will serve as a role model to others.

While congratulating them, he described the ordination as a welcome development.

The CAC President said even though there has been some in the past, but this year’s own was unique because embargo had been placéd on it for a long time.

In his own address, former General Evangelist, Pastor Paul Bandele expressed his joy over the development.

He appreciated the leadership of the CAC worldwide for the success recorded on the programme.

The Ambassadors Club of Awka, capital of Anambra State, has welcomed new members into its fold, presenting them with membership certificates.

The club, since its founding in 1991, has, against all expectations, become the vehicle of development in the capital city. It has, for instance,  immortalised three outstanding indigenous people of the city through scholarships established in their names.

The three people are the late Prof. Kenneth Dike, first Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan (UI) who majored in history; former Minister in the then Eastern Region, Dr. Nwoye Otuo, who was the first Awka person to study medicine in Nigeria, and Chief Amanke Okafor, first law graduate in the community and first Secretary General of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Nigeria.

Every year, three students win the scholarships and go on to study the course in which those departed icons distinguished themselves.

The club is under the leadership of Collins Iloanya, who holds a Master’s degree from Unilag.

Also, Molokwu told The Nation that the club was attached to the three Awka indigenes who made the community proud in discharge of their duties in their endeavours.

He said the mission of the club was  to be good ambassadors of the community that will show love and brotherliness and contribute to the socio-economic development of the community.

According to him, “as pioneer members of the club, that dream started by Austine Agagboncha has not died and I believe if the upcoming people stay together like this, the community is in for more goodies in future”

For the Chairman of the club, Collins Iloanya, their vision is to transform Awka and indeed, Anambra State and to impact on their members a new idea and bring generational change in the area.

“We want to create an environment that even the 10th generation will not rival, we want to revive Awka Culture and tradition and that is why the club is called Ambassadors”

“The club has already acquired a new land in the heart of the city worth over 10million naira and by 2015, it will have new secretariat where it will hold its meetings and not in any hotel again”

”We have chosen 30th of every December to hold our AGM, a date that cannot clash with any other thing as far as the club is concerned and that is why we have gathered here to inaugurate the new members,” Iloanya said.

The ceremony was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos. The seminar was sponsored by First Bank of Nigeria Plc.

The 28 young participants of ages 25 and 35 and drawn from various sectors, were the successful among the 749 applicants who applied for the seminar. They were selected after a rigorous screening exercise, which required them to write an essay about factors affecting development and the solutions to the challenge.

NLI Chairman Dr Yinka Oyinlola said the objectives of the initiative included discovering youths with foresight to develop a value-based leadership skills with the aim of transforming the country.

He said the participants, after the leadership seminar, would execute projects of their choice through which they would demonstrate their leadership values. The projects, the initiator said, should address the need of the people and have impacts within the Nigerian community.

Oyinlola described leadership as a tough war.

He said the future leader seminar was unique because NLI had been able to attract the best among the youth and prepare them for the challenges ahead.

Congratulating the participants, he said: “These NLI associates are going into the world to serve as moral conscience. As you face challenges of life, we do hope you will be able to apply the values you have learnt in the past five days to solve the problems in your respective organisations.”

The Deputy Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Ms Julie Koenen, described the participants as development partners.

She said the U.S agency had been monitoring the NLI activities in promoting value-based leadership, adding that the USAID had found out how to partner the initiative to achieve its objectives.

She urged the participants to propagate the knowledge in their environment, adding: “Great leaders make things happen.”

Some of the participants gave testimonies on how the future leader seminar added values to their lives.

Bankole Makanju described the seminar as fantastic experience. He said: “My class was beyond amazing. The seminar has made me to energise and it refreshes my memory about value-based leadership.”

Habibat Mustapha, an employee of First Bank of Nigeria Plc, said the seminar changed the wrong notion she had about NLI.

“I never thought any good could ever come out of Nigeria until I met these great minds with whom I exchanged ideas. Now, my thinking about the initiative has changed and I must thank my employer for the opportunity given to me,” she said.

Ademola Adewale Sadiq, a New York-based attorney, said the initiative helped him to re-connect with his root and play his role in Nigeria’s development.

He said: “Growing up outside the country has its challenges but I continued to have the thought that I could not run away from my country. As a young Nigerian, I believe I have a role to play in changing the attitude of youths towards leadership and development.”

The highpoint of the programme was the investiture of the participants as NLI associates, where they were given certificates of participation.

The NLI Programme Director, Mr Anthony Ubani said the seminar involved three stages of conversation.

“They had conversation across the ages, which is the first level. The second level of conversation is among the peers, while the third level is conversation with themselves, with their conscience.

“We believe at the end of these conversations, we will have sufficiently provoked them to understand the dynamics of value-based leadership and to understand their role in building a better Nigeria,” he said.

Mrs. Obianuju Anakwe Akanbi, who spoke on behalf of the First Bank management, said the bank would continue to empower the youth to work for the development of the country.

  • CITN inducts 548 members

The Chattered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has inducted 548 members who were successful in its professional training programme. Some of the inductees were Oyetoki Paul, Idowu Olubukola, Ubani Ukoma and the host of others.

Speaking at the 29th Induction ceremony of the Institute, the Chairman of Membership and Professional Conduct Committee of Council, Mrs. Olajumoke Simplice, said the ceremony was in compliance with Section 1 (3) of the Institute’s membership rule. She said such induction needs to preceed CITN membership.

She further stressed that by the induction, the inductees have obtained the right to practice taxation either as a practitioner or as administrator.

The CITN President, Mr. Mark Anthony Dike said that taxation remains crucial for the nation’s development. He urged government not only to recognize services of tax professional in policy formulation, but also accord them due priority in its drive to evolve a viable tax system.

He said the CITN as a sole regulator of taxation in Nigeria, would ensure that only competent and certified professionals practice and administer taxation in Nigeria.

He lamented that not all the sectors of the economy contribute to tax. “Agriculture for instance, contributes about 34 to 35 percent to the Gross Domestic Product but does contribute little or nothing to tax,” he said.

Furthermore, he said that tax avoidance and invasion decimate tax revenue in Nigeria adding that the problems of tax avoidance and tax invasion could be solved if the government gives back to the tax payer the value for the tax payment being made, because effective taxation is a one on one relationship.
