Fayose: INEC rigged poll for APC

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rig  last Saturday’s election in favour of the governor-elect, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Fayose in his  reaction to the result announced by the Chief Returning Officer, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, alleged that INEC “rigged the election in advance” to pave the way for Akeredolu’s victory.

In a statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, Fayose alleged that the commission gave victory to the APC by “deliberately replacing the name of Eyitayo Jegede, the  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, thereby creating legal logjam that lasted till three days to the election”.

The Ekiti governor regretted that “the PDP went to the election with its hands tied to the back because of the uncharitable actions of INEC”, which he claimed has become an arm of the APC.

He alleged that “besides the APC, parties are now contesting elections against INEC.”

Fayose accused the Federal Government of creating poverty to enslave Nigerians.

The governor alleged that voters were induced with money on Election Day under what he called “see and buy strategy”.

Fayose said: “Dibo ko sebe (vote and collect money to cook soup) was the slang used by the APC .

“Just as I would have loved to congratulate the winner because in every contest, there must be a winner and a loser, the role of INEC in awarding victory to him left much to be desired.

“Even though INEC allowed what appeared like a free and fair atmosphere on  Election Day, the election had been won and lost before it was held.

“For instance, INEC witnessed the PDP primary election that produced Eyitayo Jegede and succumbed to pressure from the APC cabal to replace him with Jimoh Ibrahim, who did not take part in any primary election known to the Electoral Act.

“What could anyone have done under 72 hours in an election that was heavily monetised by the APC?

“The whole process was a deliberate sabotage by INEC, which has totally bastardised the electoral process.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali as the Chief Returning Officer for the ongoing gubernatorial election in Ondo State.

It would be recalled that INEC on Friday rejected the claims of the Peoples Democratic Party alleging that the Commission, in connection with the All Progressives Congress (APC), had appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, who was Chief Returning Officer in Edo State to serve in same capacity in Ondo to “use the same template that compromised Edo election”.

AD warns INEC, security agencies against manipulation

As the people of Ondo State go to the poll today to elect a new governor, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies against manipulating the results of the election in favour of any party, especially the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to a statement issued in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the Director General Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation, Bola Ilori, said any attempt to manipulate the result of the election would be resisted by the people of Ondo State, adding that the people of the state should be allowed to choose who rules them.

The statement reads: “While we as a party are prepared for the election, we will support anything that will aid the peaceful conduct of election.

“However, we will not fold our ýarms and allow our destinies to be determined by people who are not only political invaders but people who have subjected our people to untold hardship.

“Also, the security agencies should make sure they don’t take sides. They should deal with anybody who foments trouble.

“Just like we have told our people, they should not allow anybody to dictate what they will do to them, but make sure they keep vigil and defend their votes.”

“We are also aware of plans to cause trouble in Akoko land, Ondo South Senatorial District and other areas considered to be strongholds of AD.

“If President Muhammodu Buhari cannot deliver the dividends of democracy he promised the people, he should not cause chaos in the state.

“He should warn INEC and security agencies against enacting a replica of 1983 political crisis in the state.”

  • Ondo Decides: INEC unfair to Jegede, says Mimiko

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo state on Friday said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not been fair to the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN.

The governor said the commission is attempting to foist injustice on the people’s of the state by insisting to go ahead with the election.

Mimiko, who addressed a press conference said the PDP is yet to have agents for the poll.

It will be recalled that the Appellate court on Thursday declared Jegede the authentic PDP candidate by dismissing the ruling of the lower court, which earlier directed the INEC to recognise Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the party candidate.
Mimiko also disclosed that the Commission has not released the collation tags for Ward Collation officers for PDP Ward agents.

He wondered how INEC expects the PDP candidate to campaign round the local governments, raise money for the elections and also screen his agent.

The governor alleged that concerted efforts have been made by forces within the APC to prevent the emergence of a credible and electable candidate for the PDP in the state.

Mimiko further disclosed that the Voters Register which should have been given to the candidate was just released 48 hours to the election , contrary to Electoral Law which stipulated a 30 days to the poll.

  • Police, INEC: We are ready for Ondo poll

Police, INEC: We are ready for Ondo poll

The police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday declared their readiness to conduct a hitch-free election on Saturday.

Former INEC Acting Chairman, Amina Bala Zakari , said effort would be made to avoid an inconclusive election.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Segun Agbaje, said all electoral materials had been distributed.

He said the commission was more determined to prosecute anyone who violated the Electoral Act.

Zakari and Agbaje spoke when they briefed international observers, including representatives of the United Kingdom, German and the Netherlands embassies at the INEC headquarters in Akure.

Residents were seen in last minute shopping as they prepare for Saturday’s polls. The markets and banks were busy.

Agbaje dispelled rumours that the election had been postponed till December 19. He said the poll would hold on Saturday as scheduled.

He said sensitive materials were distributed on Thursday and Friday to the local government areas, from where they will be taken to the polling units on Saturday.

Agbaje said smart card readers had been configured to ensure that voting does not go beyond the stipulated time.

He said when fully charged, the machines could work for 10 hours.

The REC said effort was being made to ensure there were little or no hitches.

Agbaje said accreditation and voting would be done simultaneously which he believes would “help capture more voters.”

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Joshak Habila,  said anyone found inducing voters with money would be arrested no matter how highly placed.
The DIG, who is the ground commander-in-charge of Ondo governorship election, said every arrangement had been made to ensure there were no security breaches.
Habila is being assisted by two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Paul Okafor of Zone 11 and E. S. Saha of the Air Wing.
Each senatorial zone is headed by a commissioner of police.
The DIG said over 26,000 policemen had been deployed to ensure a smooth election.

INEC ready for Ifako/Ijaye constituency by-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it was prepared to conduct the Ifako-Ijaiye Federal Constituency by-election scheduled for December 3.

The commission’s Administrative Secretary, Mr. Clement Oha, made the assertion in Lagos, shortly after visiting Ifako-Ijaye. Oha said he was at the local government where the election would hold to assess the level of preparations.

He expressed satisfaction with the commission’s staff, saying arrangements being put in place were “satisfactory and encouraging’’.

He said: “We have made adequate provision for staff and their training, as well as for the election materials. We have been sensitising the people and parties. We have also been liaising with the security agents and we will be meeting them very soon.

“If I am to assess our preparations, I will say that we are now 95 per cent ready for the poll in Lagos. We have all our logistics ready; we have prepared twice the number of card readers needed.

“We have mapped out the Registration Area Centres (RACs) and the collation centres have been identified and prepared as well as the training venues.”

He added that the commission would ensure adequate distribution of staff and election materials for a successful election.

Oha, who assured the electorate that the commission was committed to conducting a free and fair election by giving the parties a level-playing ground, urged the party supporters to shun violence.

He said: “On our part, we are ready, party leaders should go and tell their supporters and followers to be orderly and peaceful. They should cast their vote and go home and if they want to wait and monitor or observe proceedings, there is no problem, only that there should be no violence.

“We have every assurance that the people we will be using on that day will deliver an election everyone will be proud of.”

Oha, who also assured the people that the election would be conclusive, added that the accreditation and voting would be held simultaneously.

Six political parties would be participating in the by-election. The parties are: the Action Alliance (AA), the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the African Democratic Party (ADC), the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The by-election became necessary, following the death of Hon. Elijah Adewale, who represented the constituency in the House of Representatives. He died in Abuja on July 20.

  • Ondo election holds Saturday – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday said the Ondo State governorship election slated for Saturday will hold as scheduled.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated this at the stakeholders’ meeting on the election, held at Akure, the state capital.

The event was attended by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, political parties’ candidates and traditional and religious leaders.

Yakubu said the yet to be resolved political parties’ crisis does not warrant postponement of the election.

He said, “I wish to assure you of INEC’s preparedness and neutrality. We are not unaware of the partisan insinuation of bias in the nomination of candidates by one of the political parties.

“We are equally aware that party primaries for the selection of flagbearers by some of our political parties tend to be rancorous.

“For this reason, while each activity under our election time table is tied to a specific day, the conduct of party primaries, including the resolution of disputes arising from the nomination of candidates, was allocated a whole month from August 18 to September 19, 2016.

“However, where an intra-party dispute becomes the subject of litigation resulting in specific orders of court, INEC shall obey such orders until they are set aside by a superior court. We remain guided by this principle.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that, as a legal process, elections are conducted strictly in conformity with the provisions of the law.

“We have taken every step within the powers of the commission to ensure that the election this weekend is held as scheduled and that it is free, fair and credible.”

Dazang urged the electorate and stakeholders , especially leaders and candidates, to cooperate with INEC.
