PDP Gov candidate votes, slams INEC, security agencies

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Kiribo

The candidate of the People Democratic Party(PDP) in Ondo governorship poll Agboola Ajayi has cast his vote at Apoi Ward II, Unit 004 in Kiribo, Ese Odo local government area.

Agboola with wife arrived at the polling booth around 10:36 am and allowed to vote before others who were in the queue.

The couple was accredited at about 10: 45 am for voting and chatted briefly with voters before leaving the polling unit with his black Jeep.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Agboola expressed displeasure over the conduct of the excercise, alleging gross irregularities in the ongoing governorship poll.

He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies of compromising the election in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Agboola said that the preliminary report from across the 16 local  government areas has shown the election so far was far below the standard, asking the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to resign for conducting the most corrupt election in Nigeria’s political history.

He described the exercise as not only a sham but also synchronised attempt to murder democratic process, alleging that the stronghold of  PDP chieftains were militarised to intimidate the voters from exercising their franchise.

He said: “If INEC cannot successfully organize election in just one state, then you must know that we are running into anarchy in Nigeria.

“I have been getting reports across the state and it is same, including me , I am a victim here in my unit and I want to say it is deliberate on the part of the REC and the INEC and don’t forget we have said earlier that we don’t trust Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola who is the REC ; she can’t be fair.

“The system is compromised and there are complaints everywhere in the state including vote-buying , BVAS not working and don’t forget the machine is a rigging tools for them. It is a very shameful exercise and I think Nigerians should just call on INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, if he can’t do the job, he should honorably resign because the system is totally compromised, this is sad.

“Under Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC chairman, our electoral process was getting to that international standard but Professor Yakubu has drawn us back , this is sad and Nigerians are not happy.”

On the security situation, the PDP candidate said: ” From my community here it is peaceful but accused the military operatives deployment more men to his area and I would take it up with the brigade commander. They can’t be intimidating the voters. How do you station seven to 10 armed soldiers; we are not at war here !

“On the voters turn out, despite the intimidation, people were willing to vote because they are frustrated already with things in the state and the country.”

He expressed displeasure over the delay he experienced before he could vote due to BVAS malfunction, saying ” The system is not perfect, things are not working and it took more than 10 minutes before the BVAS could accredit me”.

Ondo: BVAS not capturing elderly, INEC responds

A Presiding Officer, Miss Angela Oshogwe, at the ongoing governorship election in Ondo State has said that the Bio modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine could not capture the faces of some elderly voters.

Oshogwe, manning Poling Unit 19, Ward 11 Olamojuba, Ondo in Ondo West Local Government Area of the state, said that she had lodged the complaints to the concerned authorities.

She added that the response she got was that the complaint was not limited to her polling unit, stating that the elderly had been waiting for long to vote without success.

According to her, there is the possibility of the BVAS to function before the close of voting.

Reacting to the complaint, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the commission was aware of the development in “very limited” polling units

“We are aware that in very limited cases, a few elderly voters couldn’t be accredited by the BVAS at first attempt. But, in subsequent attempts, the problem was resolved.

“A Presiding Officer in one polling unit (PU) out of 3,933 PUs in Ondo State is not in the position to say how widespread a technical problem is.

“From the reports at our disposal, so far, the BVAS is performing satisfactorily. It is not unusual for technical issues to occur in a major off-season election like the one we are conducting today.

“We anticipated it and made adequate arrangements to respond to any type of challenge,” Oyekanmi said

A septuagenarian, Mrs Agnes Olapade, who was affected by the technical problem, said that she was disappointed that she could not vote due to malfunction of the BVAS.

Olapade said she had been at the polling unit, with other affected elderly voters, since 8:00 a.m. without being able to vote.

According to her. she voted in the previous elections without any difficulty.

Similarly, Mrs Rukayat Olawoye, 87 years old, said that she came out because of the voting but was disappointed at the difficulty occasioned by the BVAS.

Another septuagenarian, Mrs Ronke Fayankimi, stated that she and other affected voters would continue to wait, to see if the BVAS would  capture their faces.

YYC condemns call for removal of INEC boss

President, Yoruba Youth Council (YYC) Comrade Eric Oduwole has expressed dismay over calls for the sack of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, which he described as ill-motivated, baseless and against national interest.

According to Oluwole, the timing of these calls, emerging just days before the governorship election in Ondo State, raises concerns about possible political motives.

Specifically, he said: “It is troubling that calls for Prof. Yakubu’s removal seem to arise repeatedly whenever an election is near, creating unnecessary tension and appearing calculated to disrupt the stability of the electoral process. This is unpatriotic and counterproductive.

“In particular, we are disturbed by the hashtag #YakubuMustGo trending on X (formerly Twitter). The YYC views this as an unfounded attack on Prof. Yakubu’s integrity and an attempt to undermine INEC’s leadership at a critical time. Such agitation against him is orchestrated by individuals who do not have Nigeria’s best interests at heart.

“Over the years, calls for the removal of INEC Chairs, including Prof. Yakubu, have often been dismissed by patriotic Nigerians as baseless and harmful to our democratic progress. Prof. Yakubu has demonstrated exemplary leadership, showing unwavering commitment to impartiality, accountability, and transparency. His dedication has significantly strengthened our electoral process, ensuring it becomes more credible and respected, both at home and internationally.

“Prof. Yakubu’s reforms have fortified global confidence in Nigeria’s democracy, guiding our great nation toward a stronger democratic path. We believe that current calls for his removal, rather than advancing Nigeria’s progress, threaten to undo the gains we have collectively achieved under his stewardship. These calls are detrimental to the principles of democracy that we hold dear as a people.

“As youths who value Nigeria’s democratic journey, the YYC stands in firm support of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. We pass a vote of confidence in his leadership of INEC, knowing he will continue to uphold the values of integrity, impartiality, and accountability. His commitment to peaceful elections, shown by his insistence on peace accords at all electoral levels, has reduced election-related violence, an achievement that deserves commendation, not baseless criticism.

“We, the Yoruba Youth Council, remain resolute in our support for Prof. Yakubu’s exemplary service to Nigeria and reject any attempts to destabilise INEC under his leadership. We call on all patriotic Nigerians to recognie and appreciate the progress we have made in our democracy, thanks in part to Prof. Yakubu’s contributions, and to join us in rejecting these unfounded attacks.”

Ondo polls: NDYC passes vote of confidence on INEC boss

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has passed a vote of confidence on the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, especially in the way and manner he is discharging his mandate at the commission.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, on Thursday, the group said it holds INEC’s mandate in high regard, recognising the essential role it plays in ensuring that Nigerian elections are conducted freely, fairly, and credibly.

In the statement which reads in part, it said: “We commend Professor Yakubu for his unwavering commitment to steering INEC with integrity, professionalism, and a clear vision for transparency and efficiency. The recent timing of these allegations, aligning conspicuously with the upcoming Ondo State elections, raises concerns about the true intent behind them. We view this as a calculated move to sow discord and cast a shadow of doubt over the electoral process, distracting both INEC and the public from the critical task of conducting free and fair elections.

“We call on the Nigerian public to disregard these unfounded claims, and instead, keep sight of the larger goals of national unity and democratic integrity. We stand resolutely with Professor Yakubu and affirm our confidence in his commitment to upholding the sanctity of Nigeria’s elections.

“Furthermore, we appeal to Nigerian youth, as key stakeholders in the future of our democracy, to remain vigilant and discerning, resisting any efforts to derail or distort our democratic processes through misinformation and divisive tactics.

“The NDYC urges all political actors, civil society organisations, and stakeholders within the democratic process to throw their support behind INEC’s mission. It is crucial that we allow the commission the independence it needs to fulfill its mandate, free from the undue influence of selfish interests that seek to overshadow the genuine aspirations of Nigerians for good governance and a stable future. We must collectively ensure that our electoral processes remain transparent, peaceful, and reflective of the true will of the Nigerian people.

“Finally, we reiterate our full confidence in Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s leadership of INEC. We encourage him to continue his work with courage and determination, unshaken by these distractions, knowing that the NDYC and well-meaning Nigerians across the country support his efforts. Under his capable guidance, we believe INEC will continue to uphold the highest principles of democracy, justice, and fairness, which are vital to Nigeria’s progress and stability.”

IPAC National Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, made the appeal in Akure at a stakeholders meeting and voter’s sensitization for a peaceful, transparent and inclusive election.

He said: “As stakeholders, we must prioritize peace, equity, and justice. Let us work together to create an environment conducive to credible elections. I urge all stakeholders to adhere to the principles of democracy, respect the rights of others, and prioritize the interests of the Ondo people and Nigeria in general.

“As we approach this important electoral process, it is imperative that we emphasize the significance of conducting a free, fair, and peaceful election. Stakeholders must all play by the rules, adhering to the electoral guidelines, constitution, and electoral act.

“To the voters in the State, we urge you to exercise your civic duty without hindrance. Vote for the candidates of your choice, based on their manifesto, track record, and leadership qualities. Reject any form of vote buying, as it undermines the integrity of our democracy.”

“To the contestants, we urge you to know that the will of the electorates is sacrosanct and should be respected. The decision to choose leaders rests squarely on the shoulders of the people and that is what makes democracy unique.
