Common disorders occurring in pregnancy (4) Infections

Some infections are common in pregnancy simply because there is an ongoing pregnancy and the woman is vulnerable as a result of the pregnancy. Other infections may occur notwithstanding the presence of a pregnancy. Amongst them, I have discussed below.

Malaria. Malaria kills more children and pregnant women than any other group of people. Chemicals that women produce in their body cause certain smell during pregnancy and so mosquitoes to them. This is one of the reasons why pregnant women may suffer from malaria more than they should have been had they not been pregnant. Also, the self-defences of pregnant women against infection is lower than when they were not pregnant.

In all, pregnant women, like anyone else, may have fever, headache, chills, nausea and vomiting, body aches, joint pains due to malaria. The danger of malaria in pregnancy is that if left untreated, the fever and the parasite of mosquito may cause miscarriage. Therefore, a quick attention to suspicion of malaria illness is important at any of stage of pregnancy. Most of us including pregnant women have access to a lot of antimalarial medications. Use them. If not sure, ensure you go to your doctor and midwife as soon as possible.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI, Urine infection)

UTI is in general, common in women than men, pregnancy or not. This common condition is more common during pregnancy. Once the urine is infected, the woman may feel pain during or after passing urine (pee). Fever, pain in the abdominal sides, or in lower abdomen may be part of the feelings. She may have the urge to urinate even more than the pregnancy had originally brought upon her. If UTI is untreated, there is the risk of miscarriage and also kidney damage that may follow.

Treatment: Without doubt the doctor attending to the pregnant woman will carry out relevant urine and blood tests to ascertain the diagnosis.

Treatment: Most anti-thrush medications will take care of the thrush. Some of these are obtainable over the counter at pharmacies. Alternatively, the antenatal clinics will prescribe appropriate preparation to help deal with the thrush.

Oral hygiene

The mouth is not spared in the changes that the female body undergoes in pregnancy. As a result, the hormone that affects the body may cause the mouth to be vulnerable to dental infections. The gums may be swollen and painful. The teeth may suffer more caries.

However, good oral hygiene, regular mouth wash and avoidance of sugary, factory- processed foods and drinks such as carbonated drinks may diminish the oral diseases encountered in pregnancy.

In spite of what I have been discussing here, other ailments may come upon the pregnant and not just what I have written here. Examples of such illnesses are breathing tract infections (upper respiratory tract infection), changes in colour of skin to becoming darkish and also constipation may be noticed as occurring more by expectant mothers.

In summary, in the last four weeks, we have taken a look at common illnesses as relates to our environment that affect women during pregnancy. Some preventive measures and treatment options had been offered.

Chevron contributes $5m to Global Fund to reduce HIV infections in Nigeria

Chevron Nigeria Limited, (CNL), an affiliate of Chevron Corporation (Chevron), has announced the disbursement of $2.5 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund). The fund will also be used for the implementation of the Chevron-Global Fund Anti-Retroviral Treatment Service Maintenance Programme (ART Programme), in Delta, Bayelsa, Ondo and Lagos states. Next year also, a final installment of $2.5 million will be disbursed to support these HIV programmes, making the total contribution to $5 million by Chevron.

These funds are in addition to the $6.7 million earlier donated by Chevron for the Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) in Bayelsa State.

“The ART Programme will help bridge a critical national health gap and continue Chevron’s work in achieving an AIDS-free generation. The programne will help reduce new HIV infections and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV and other affected people in the communities of the targeted states.

“Additionally, it will provide Nigerians with universal access to high-quality, patient-centered prevention, diagnosis and treatment services for tuberculosis, HIV and drug-resistant tuberculosis by 2020,” General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, CNL, Esimaje Brikinn, said.

These disbursements are part of a nine-year, $60 million commitment from Chevron to the Global Fund. The Global Fund raises and invests nearly $4 billion a year to support programmes run by local experts to fight the three diseases in countries and communities most in need.

The Global Fund is one of the world’s largest international financier of health care programmes fighting these three diseases.

According to Brikinn: “Chevron has learned through decades of experience that our success is tied to the health and prosperity of the communities where we operate. Chevron’s social investments are developed through a participatory process and through partnerships not only with the communities, who are living in proximity to our operations, but also with other stakeholders, who share interests in common with our business (e.g., government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), non-profits, development agencies, among others.”

CNL has also committed substantial resources over the years in implementing initiatives aimed at combating several diseases in communities close to its operations and beyond. “The initiatives include River Boat Clinic, building of community health centres, donation of medical supplies and sponsorship of health campaigns,”Brikinn explained.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, thanked Chevron for the gesture and noted that the efforts of the company over the years have exemplified the private sector support for health intervention programmes in Nigeria.

“We are happy about what Chevron is doing to support government’s efforts in the fight of HIV and other diseases in Nigeria. That is what we have been advocating; that the private sector should show concern about public health issues. Government cannot do it alone, and this support is needed to achieve a healthy society” Prof. Adewole remarked.

The Global Fund’s Strategy 2017-2022 outlines results targets for the partnership. Programmes supported by the Global Fund will save 14 million lives in the three-year period, beginning in 2017, bringing the total lives saved by the Global Fund partnership to 36 million by the end of 2019.

Those programmes will also avert up to 194 million new infections or cases of HIV, TB and malaria

Urgent issues on men and their prostate, infections, as well as male and female infertility

Staphylococcus And Infertility

Bacteria infections and infertility

IF you are a regular reader of this column, you will recall that for the past five months, I have taken time to discuss the subject of staphylococcus. I have also talked about Fibroid in the early edition of this column.

However because of the response I have been getting from this column, I intend to discuss other bacteria infections. As you well know, the column discusses issue of bacteria infections, the causes, the effect and the implication of this health problems. If you asked me what I have achieved since I started writing on this column my first response shall be education and enlightenment and my second achievement is that I have been able to acquaint our readers about certain herbs that can help fight or clear bacteria infections. Neverthless, I have testimonies concerning our herbal formular. I am happy that our enlightenment are yeileding results.

Women have seen their menstrual cycle come back, even in the cases of amenorhea. Men battling with sexual and libido problems have been revived and I am amazed to see cases of oligaspermia reversed. However, medical analysts have noted that bacteria infections have different origins, but when they affect different tissues of the body, it can therefore affect the entire performance of the body. For instance, streptococcus manifest more on the skin and can also affect the respiration when it attacks the lungs and therefore may lead to streptococcus pneumonia, leading to cold, cough condition and at times chest pains. Staphylococcus which has upto 27 species such as staph epidermids – attacking the skin, staph saprophyticus – attacking the urinary tract. Acording to medical analyst, Staphylococcus aureus can attack every organ of the body such as the lungs, the skin, the entire male and female reproductive system leading to male and female infertility. My experience in treating women for instance show that most of their laboratory results which reveal bacteria infections are leading to pelvic inflammatory diseases (P.I.D.s), and causing so much pains which are caused by these bacteria infections. And most of the time it can lead to female and male infertility as the infections block the tube, affects the ovaries, and can lead to hormonal imbalance among women in their reproductive age, changing their menstrual cycle to scanty or no menses at all (amenorrhea). And in the case of men leading to poor erectile function, low sperm count and male infertility too.
