How hormonal acne affected my confidence, by Ini Dima-Okojie

Actress Ini Dima-Okojie has shared personal struggle with hormonal acne, revealing how it impacted her self-confidence and career.

In an Instagram video, Ini spoke about her experiences with acne, which began in late 2023 and worsened in early 2024.

Despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, Ini’s acne persisted.

She confessed that filming two movies during this time was challenging, as she struggled to cope with the emotional and physical toll of acne.

She wrote: “I want to talk about skin, acne, and hormonal acne in particular, and my experience with it. Most of you do not know this but I had a very traumatic experience with my skin last year. It was pretty bad and I just remember feeling so sad, downcast and guilty. I felt like I was going to the gym, eating right, I felt like I was doing all the right things and I did not know why this was happening to my face.

“And you can imagine, as an actor this is literally where the money is and I actually shot two films in that state. For those of you who have seen ‘A Night In 2005’, that was what was going on there. I had to find a way to still perform truly, luckily the character was dealing with so many things internally and I drew from what was going on with me.

“That was that film. I shot another film, a beautiful film, it is not out yet, ‘The Fire and The Moth’. I shot that going through that experience as well and this character, was not wearing any makeup, she was with her natural hair.

“So it was pretty tough. The beauty standards for women are already high, no one wants to have acne, and it hurts your self-confidence. It affects work, everyone is wondering what is happening to your face, telling you one million and one things to do.

“It was November 2023, I was filming a film in Namibia, it is called ‘Skeleton Coast’, but it is not out yet. I just noticed that I was breaking out more than normal. Usually, I would only break out maybe when I was on my period or if I was a little stressed but nothing serious like one or two.

“Fast forward to 2024, end of January I literally started having acne from my arm, from there it progressed to my neck, then to my face and my ears and I was like what is going on? There is nothing I did not do, I went to so many aestheticians. You know how it is with aestheticians, they would clear your whole skincare routine and replace it. It was very expensive and nothing was working. My face was getting worse and worse. I almost gave up and I did not know what to do.

“Going out became a chore. I was really downcast about it. Hormonal acne is something so many women deal with, but we don’t talk about it enough. My experience with it tested my confidence, my patience, and my understanding of my own body. It was frustrating, overwhelming, and at times, disheartening”.

Ini Dima-Okojie reflected on his past three years, marked by adversity, including losing his company, facing false accusations, and coping with the loss of his father.

Despite the struggles, she said he remained silent and strong, prioritising protecting his staff, investors, and company over defending himself.

“Abasi, I have witnessed you endure the most challenging of times these past three years. From losing a company you founded and loved, to facing countless falsehoods—even outright lies—spread about you, to the heartbreak of losing your father. As I write this, it’s hard not to feel the weight of all those days, weeks, and months when you fought to stay strong.

“I know the decision to step down as CEO of the company you founded was one of the hardest choices you’ve had to make. Even as they dragged your name through the mud, your focus never wavered. You weren’t concerned with defending yourself; instead, you fought to protect your staff, your investors, and the company. I wished you would speak out, to clear your name, but you chose silence, enduring it all to preserve the company’s reputation. And while it was difficult, I understood and trusted you completely.

“Now, as the truth unfolds and you take steps to rebuild, I hold tight to the promise of Psalm 23:5:

“He prepares a table before you in the presence of your enemies; He anoints your head with oil; your cup overflows.”

“You will stand before kings, Abasi. God will crown your hard work, resilience, and sacrifice with success beyond anything you could imagine. Here’s to new beginnings, my love. I believe in you always”.

“First of all, there are some misconceptions with fibroids. People automatically think that once you have fibroids, then you cannot have kids.

“Recently I was on a panel and the doctor actually said that it’s about two to three percent of fibroid cases that lead to infertility. So, there are things you’re looking out for when you have fibroids: how many, the size, and the location. The location determines how severe the case is. So if it’s a little to close to the uterus or on it, that is when it might be tricky if you’re trying to have kids.

“When it comes to dealing with it in marriage, I really think it just depends on the kind of partner you have,” she said.

She praised her husband, Abasi, for his unwavering support and comfort during this challenging time, with emphasis on the importance of having a supportive partner,.

According to her: “My husband is the most supportive husband. I was really stressing out about it when I found out it was back. I’ve cried. I was just not okay. Because I remember what that surgery was and it wasn’t funny. It wasn’t that I was in and out of the hospital, I was in the hospital for like 4 days after. I couldn’t walk for so long after. It was painful so I couldn’t even imagine that I’d go through that again.

“But Abasi is just the best guy. He is very comforting. He is very supportive of everything that I do, and he’s like “babe, you’ll be fine. Whatever it is, we’re together, we will deal with it.” It just depends on the kind of partner that you have and I’ve been so lucky that my support system is so strong.”

The actress, who first underwent surgery for fibroids in 2020, expressed fears and stress about dealing with the condition again.

However, with her husband’s support, she feels more confident in managing her health and navigating the challenges of fibroids in her marriage.
