It was further gathered that the truck lost its break and ran into people hawking at the road side, killing five and injuring another five.

The Head of Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps, Osun Sector Command, Mr. Rufus Ajibola Adewumi, who disclosed that the accident was caused by over speeding, said the casualties include two male adults, one female adult and one male child strapped to her mother’s back.

He added that four people were injured while one person who was trapped in the crash escaped unhurt.

    •Oliseh grows grey hairs

Super Eagles chief coach, Sunday Oliseh must be growing grey hairs in his base in Belgium, following revelation on Saturday that Nigeria international, Moses Simon was forced out of a Belgian Jupiler League match for champions Genk due to injury.

However, the severity of the injury has yet to be ascertained as Nigeria prepare to face Egypt in an all-important AFCON 2017 qualifier next month. But it simply means that Oliseh must dig deep into his bag of tricks to replace Simon Moses, if it turns out that he won’t be available for the March 26 cracker against Egypt at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.

The former Trencin of Slovakia hitman was forced to leave the pitch limping in the 27th minute in Friday’s game when his side beat Mouscron-Peruwelz 2-0. He was replaced with Mbark Boussoufa, who later scored .

The 20-year-old dashing winger, who has scored two goals in the league this season, only recently signed a new contract with the Belgian club, who are top of the league and on course to successfully defending the league crown they won last season.

  • Scores injured in Ebonyi rice millers clash

Scores injured in Ebonyi rice millers clash

The leadership tussle rocking the Abakaliki Rice Milling Company got messier at the weekend as rival factions clashed in Ebonyi, the state capital.

Factional Chairman  Chukwuemeka Nwankashi got machete cuts on his head and has since been hospitalised, following parallel elections, which produced factional executives.

It was gathered that a faction supported by the government held its election at the Abakaliki Township Stadium and former chairman Joseph Ununu was re-elected.

The second faction held its election at the mill’s hall and Nwankashi was elected as its chairman.

Speaking to The Nation, Nwankashi accused Ununu of causing the fracas. He alleged that Ununu’s faction, armed with weapons, and on Ununu’s orders, attacked him and his supporters as they celebrated his victory.

His words: “We planned to have our elections but government interfered with it. This is contrary to our constitution because only registered members are allowed to vote during elections.

“We begged to be allowed to hold the election at our hall but the government insisted it must hold at the stadium, and we agreed. But when we got to the stadium at 8am, we discovered they had brought in hoodlums to take over the place. We told them those people were not our authentic members but they did not listen, so we left.

“The authentic members then went to the mill and held our election but before that, we stopped at the Government House to intimate them of happenings. I won the election with 158 votes, as I was unopposed. Other officers were also elected: Elias Nwogwu (treasurer), Chijioke Ilodiba (vice chairman) and Emeka Agu Ozo (financial secretary).

“We were celebrating the victory when the former chairman, Joseph Ununu a.k.a Zuma, came with armed thugs and attacked us. I sustained injuries on my head and face. Many others were also injured and if not for the intervention of the police, we would have been killed.

“Ununu even boasted that he had government’s backing to eliminate anyone opposing him.”

Nwankashi called on the government to intervene, adding that “even if they want a particular candidate, they should tell us. We only want the proper thing to be done”.

But Ununu denied ordering the attack. He maintained that he was duly elected.

The government, through the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural resources, Uchenna Orji, has said the state will only recognise the election which produced Ununu.

According to him, the government had done all it could to ensure peace but its efforts were frustrated by selfish individuals.

“The government, therefore, constituted a committee, headed by myself, with other commissioners as members, and we fixed February 12 for the election, to hold at the Abakaliki Township stadium, which all the aspirants accepted.

“All 13 aspirants were screened and at the end, we adopted the option A4 system, with the delegates raising their hands to be counted.

“Ununu emerged as chairman and there was nothing like a parallel election, because the one which produced him was conducted in the presence of security officials and accredited election observers.

“The purported parallel election was conducted by cartels who are produce merchants; they connive with rice vendors to brand the rice as belonging to other states.

“Their acts give the false impression that Ebonyi rice is produced by other states, but we urge the rice millers and the public to conduct their businesses without fear of molestation,” Orji said.

  • Four injured in Gombe attack

The Gombe State Police Command has confirmed that four persons were injured in an attack on residents of Kinafa, a rural community in Yemaltu/Deba Local Government.

Spokesman Fwaji Atajiri told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe yesterday that no one was killed in the attack suspected to be carried out by youths from a neighbouring village.

He said: “Four people were injured in the attack, which occurred on Saturday. No one was killed, but we are investigating.”

Atajiri said peace had been restored, adding that policemen were patrolling the villages, while residents were going about their activities.

He refused to confirm or deny speculations as to where the attackers came from, choosing not to “pre-empt investigation.”

“When we are through with investigation, we will let you know.”

The Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Haruna Samanja, who confirmed the incident, said he reported to the police “immediately I heard it.”

He said he met 11 persons being treated, following injuries they sustained, when he visited the Specialist Hospital in Gombe.

“They included the District Head of Kinafa, Malam Musa Inuwa. Two others were referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, because their condition was bad. They needed surgery.”

Samanja said he visited the two communities to speak with the people on the need for a peaceful co-existence, warning that anyone found culpable would face the law.

    Oliseh drops ‘injured’ Ibrahim

Rabiu Ibrahim is likely to miss out on Tuesday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Swaziland.

The midfielder was substituted less than 30 minutes after he was introduced in the second half of the 0-0 draw with Swaziland on Friday.

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh has revealed that the decision to hook the Trencín man was not tactical.

“Rabiu got onto the pitch and unfortunately hurt his knee after only a few minutes. He felt some pain and I thought it wise to substitute him. Ordinarily, he would have finished the game,” Oliseh told supersport.com.

The Eagles’ trainer added that the injury to the midfielder affected his game plan and revealed that it was highly unlikely he will be fit to play on Tuesday.

“It was saddening because it destabilised our (final) push. We wanted to win the game. I don’t think he will play on Tuesday. He will work with the doctors on Sunday, see what the problem is and we will eventually find out what happened,” he said.

The 25-year-old has been capped five times by Nigeria at senior level.

  • Sylva: APC members were injured

    Sylva: APC members were injured

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the December 5 election in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, yesterday insisted that members of the party were injured by thugs suspected to be Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) supporters.

The standard-bearer, through his campaign outfit, the Sylva/Igiri Campaign Organisation (SICO), implored the police to investigate the incident and arrest the culprits.

SICO’s Director of Media and Publicity Chief Nathan Egba, said in a statement in Yenagoa that the victims’ offence was that they helped the government to clear refuse in Yenagoa.

Said he: “We urge the Police commissioner to arrest the thugs, who injured four APC women- supporters and a driver of one of the evacuating trucks at Amarata and Tombia in Yenagoa. A truck was set ablaze and the windscreen of another was smashed.

“The women and youth wings of the campaign organisation were on a rescue mission to help the PDP-led administration perform one of its functions of clearing refuse at dump sites when they were attacked.

“It is, therefore, unacceptable that besides attacking the women, the thugs burnt one of our trucks at the Tombia dumpsite and smashed the windscreen of another truck at Amarata in Yenagoa.

“It is regrettable that the Bayelsa State government that should protect its citizens has unleashed terror on them because of the desperation of Governor Seriake Dickson to secure a second term ticket, which has become a mirage.”

Sympathising with the injured people, Egba assured them of the party’s commitment to ensure they received good treatment.

He said they never envisaged attack for volunteering to clear waste in the Yenagoa metropolis.

According to him, security arrangements would be put in place to protect APC members during sanitation exercises.

Egba said: “This attack on innocent APC members is an attempt to provoke our supporters to become violent. But we will resist the temptation to become violent.

“APC has been vindicated, as events have shown that it is the PDP that is violent. The party has lost the people’s confidence because of the wicked policies of the Seriake administration. “The second coming of Chief Sylva will bring relief to our impoverished people.”

But Dickson, through his campaign outfit, faulted Sylva’s claim.

It said APC’s allegation that its members were injured, was untrue.

The Director of Publicity of the Restoration Campaign Organisation, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, described the refuse evacuation claim as deceitful and shameful, alleging that the APC members attacked the governor’s convoy.

He enjoined residents to be wary of APC members’ antics.

Obuebite said:  “APC members are desperate to grab power through the backdoor by using dubious means.

“It has been confirmed that it is indeed the so-called change party that is responsible for the heap of refuse in the state, particularly in Yenagoa.

“They carried out the show of shame on a day set aside by the sanitation authority for refuse evacuation.

“The APC and its embattled candidate, Sylva, should look for other sane and dignifying means of campaigning, as this latest style will not give them votes.”

  • Five injured in Ondo auto crash

Five persons were injured at the weekend in multiple accidents in Oka-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State. Two vehicles were damaged.

The accident, which occurred on the Owo/Abuja Road, was said to have been caused by over speeding.

The first happened at the accident-prone Oke-Alabojuto. The other was at Oke-Maria near Oka-Akoko.

It was gathered that the truck rammed into a car coming from Abuja and the driver reportedly fled.

An eyewitness, Mrs Taiba Yaya, said the accident caused gridlock on the busy road, which links the South to the North.

It was learnt that the victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.

The unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ikare, Jimoh Basiru, said over speeding was responsible for the accident.

The FRSC boss said the truck had been impounded. He warned drivers against over speeding.

  • Nine OOU students injured in road accident

Nine OOU students injured in road accident

NINE students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have been injured in a road accident, about four month after the death of nine of their colleagues in similar circumstances.

The accident occurred on Old Corperative Road in Ago-Iwoye last Thursday when the victims were returning to their off-campus hostels in Oru-Ijebu. They were travelling in a 14-seater bus.

It was gathered that the accident was caused by a brake failure, which made the vehicle to skid off its lane and crash into a roadside carwash.

Sympathisers rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants of the bus. The driver, it was learnt, ran away immediately after the incident. Occupants of the vehicle included nine students. No life was lost.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that three of the injured students were referred to the OOU Teaching Hospital in Sagamu. They are Adewunmi Adekanbi, a 400-Level Applied Zoology student, Elizabeth Olawunmi Olapelumi, a 100-Level Mass Communication student, and Yetunde Ogunsawe, also in 100-Level Mass Communication.

Other occupants suffered minor injuries and had been discharged from the hospital.

Elizabeth, who spoke to our correspondent on her sickbed, recalled how the accident happened. She said: “We were all going back to our hostels in Oru-Ijebu after lectures. The bus left from the school, but we got to the main road, the driver increased the speed. As he tried to overtake a vehicle in front, he did not know there was a car moving across the other side of the road to a car wash. He tried to apply the brake but it failed. Then, the bus crashed into the car wash.”

Adewunmi, who went for her department’s Cultural Day, attributed the incident to the carelessness of the driver, saying: “The driver was carried away in discussion with a man sitting beside him. The next thing we saw was a crash.”

Reacting, students said the latest accident should serve as a reminder to officials of road safety agencies and the school management to ensure that vehicles plying the campus were in good condition.

Last month, a similar accident occurred when an 18-seater bus had a brake failure and crashed into the school main gate.

Six die, eight injured in multiple road crash

Six persons were feared dead yesterday and eight others injured in a multiple road accident in Lekki, Lagos.

The accident occurred at Marwa Roundabout at about 1pm, causing heavy traffic on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

An eyewitness posted on social media that “a commercial cab rammed into a car causing another car to join in the unfortunate incident.

“The Lagos Ambulance Service was yet to show up as at the time of filing in this report but well-meaning individuals alongside policemen are taking the injured to the hospital.”

A motorist, Kelechi Duru, who posted the picture of the scene on his Twitter account, @iamfatdon, said the accident claimed six lives.

But a source at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said three persons died. Eight others, he added, were injured.

The source said over speeding was responsible for the mishap.

“I really do not have much information on it but I overheard a colleague who said three people died and eight injured. He also said it happened just by the bridge at Lekki second roundabout and involved three vehicles. He also said the accident was caused by overspeeding. That is all I know,” he said.

LASTMA spokesperson Bola Ajao could not be reached for official statement as her telephone number was not reachable as at press time.
