Injury knocks out Gambo from Cote d’Ívoire match

Super Eagles quest to overrun the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on their home soil in Abidjan in the second leg of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) has suffered a big blow, as home based Eagles’ dependable striker, Gambo Mohammed did not make the trip to Abidjan, venue of the match as a result of injury he suffered during training at the Abuja National Stadium Goal Project’s synthetic pitch on Monday.

A visibly sad Eagles handler Stephen Keshi disclosed this to sports reporters during the Eagles’ medial parley in Abuja yesterday. He also doused the tension of losing such caliber of player to injury few days to important second leg qualifier of CHAN.

“It’s a pity that Gambo Mohammed got injured two days ago (in Eagles training). We want every player to be ready for the game in Cote d’Ivoire because it is not going to be easy. But it is nature and it has taken its course. There is nothing we can do. Any other player who is going to fill his shoes must do what he has to do and do his best for the team. So we will see what happens in Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday.

“Gambo has a muscle tear and relying on what the Doctor told me last week Gambo will be out for six weeks. That is a big blow but I think Alhaji Gero (Enugu Rangers) and the rest of them can come to the game.

He, however, promised Nigerian soccer fans that he has capable replacement for the injured Kano Pillars striker. Keshi assured that the team is mentally and physically ready for the match.

“I think they are ready. I can feel it and see it on their faces. They want to do something to make themselves proud (since Nigeria has never qualified for this competition before) and to make Nigeria proud. I can also vouch for the players that they are ready for the task”, Keshi assured.

Eagles need to avoid losing to the host team 3-0 if Nigeria desires to sail through to the finals of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). But the team looks set and good to qualify for Nigeria’s first ever appearance in CHAN organised by Africa football ruling body CAF for players in African domestic leagues.

Kofarmata’s injury not serious — Team Doctor

Kano Pillars striker, Bello Musa Kofarmata’s Knee injury he sustained during a week 17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) tie against Dolphins at the Liberation Stadium on Saturday is not as bad as first feared, the team’s doctor Ali Adamu has confirmed.

Kofamata got a shock in his right leg when he was trying to take a shot at goal in the 1-1 draw encounter on Saturday.

The former Heartland forward limped off in the 70th minute when it was obvious that he could no longer continue the match, leaving his side to end the game with nine men on the pitch after the Pyramid City side had already completed its substitution and a red card to Mustapha Musa in the 50th minute.

Adamu in a telephone chat with SportingLife said the 25-year old hitman will be subjected to a physical examination to assess the injury today, stressing that he will be fit for the team’s next game.

“It was not a serious injury and Insha Allah he will be fit for our next game,” the team’s doctor told SportingLife.

“He got a shock on his right leg. He wanted to take a shot and he missed it. He could not move the leg because he strained his knee. He could have scored the goal, if he had taken the shot. There is no pain in his leg only that he stretched his leg too much maybe because he was in the right position to score.I will do a physical examination for him today to assess the situation better.”

Kabiru Umar stunned the hosts when he scored in the 10th minute to put Kano Pillars in the lead before Dolphins was rewarded with Fred Okwara’s 47th minute equaliser.

The draw against Dolphins ensured that Pillars maintain its NPFL top position with 33 points from 18 games played so far.

  • EMMANUEL EMENIKE MY INJURY AGONY…What Samuel Eto’o told me

EMMANUEL EMENIKE MY INJURY AGONY…What Samuel Eto’o told me

EMMANUEL Emenike, Super Eagles’ super striker and Golden Boot Award winner at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has spoken extensively for the very first time since last Sunday’s unlucky injury that would keep him off the field for the rest of the Russian Super League season.

It would also keep him further way from the Nigerian national team with a busy June calendar when they would be playing two World Cup qualifiers and the Confederation Cup Tournament in Brazil.

Speaking exclusively with The Nation Sport & Style for close to an hour from his base, Emenike said the injury has only made him stronger and determined to overcome all obstacles on his way.

“I have been through a lot in my career and I always come back stronger,” he started. “This would not be different for me. I will get back stronger, although it is highly frustrating seeing myself on the side line again, but the best way to cope with such situation is to give God the glory.

“I am alive, I am happy; I am loved by my club and in my country. I think with all the support I have around me, it will make it easy for me to bounce back mush quicker than anticipated,” he added.

Emenike is of the opinion that the latest injury and subsequent sideline is an opportunity to even get closer to God : “I have learnt to be more faithful to God knowing that l was vindicated just few days ago of a grievous charge in Turkey and God has vindicated me in that case. He will help me to come back better and stronger,” explained Emenike, as he spoke further on other interesting issues. Excerpts…

After you have been declared fit for the Anzhi game, Nigerians were happy to see their goal-poacher returning to action but you will be missing the Confederation Cup and World Cup qualifiers again due to injury…

It’s painful, but Nigeria is blessed with a lot of talented players all over the world. Like I said before that I am a team player, I expect the team to go all the way and qualify for the World Cup and try and win the FIFA confederations Cup in Brazil. They are lots of good players in the Super Eagles team and there are lots of players who are on queue to get the chance, and maybe this will give another player the opportunity to shine in the team. But on my own part, I will support the team to qualify and win the Confederation cup.

You have also been ruled out of June World Cup qualifiers and Confederations Cup

I think I am not destined to play the Confederations Cup. Sometimes, it is not by chance but the grace of God. I consider this injury as part of the game, it happens and there is nothing one can do about it. I don’t regret anything and at the moment my aim is to return stronger and sharp. I am not thinking on how I will miss games. My best thinking now is to respond well to treatment and get back.

You tasted some minutes of action against Anzhi since the Nations Cup injury before you were stretched out again. What was it like when you first touched the ball again?

It was as if the ball should stick to my feet. It was exciting especially when I saw the fans cheering me. It was a great moment. Being out on injury could be the most frustrating aspect of any footballer’s career. It means that you will just be looking at the ball and you cannot do anything about it. But l’m feeling confident that I will be back stronger. The injury has come and it will go, that’s life.

Your club is fourth on the table; do you still think Spartak will qualify for the Champions League or Europa?

I think qualifying for the UEFA Champions League play-off will be difficult, giving the current form of Zenith, and also their remaining matches are not that strong statistically. For us to be pushing for Champions League, we must be at the second spot which I think will be difficult, but Europa cup is a must for us. We will qualify to Europa, my team mates are capable, they have been doing wonderfully well in my absence and that has really helped the team; so qualifying for Europa league next season is still another chance for us to play in Europe.

In your first season in Russia, you helped Spartak to qualify for UEFA Champions League. Maybe your injury is taking a toll on them?

It has affected me also…. But all my dreams are still intact, it’s only time that changes. I will surely repay the club with goals next season. I will be back for good and more glory next season by the grace of God.

You were recently photographed with Samuel Eto’o in a mansion in Moscow, what occasion was that and what is your relationship with the African great?

He’s my friend, we relate well on and off the pitch; even though I admire him as a player and he’s the all-time Africa King as far as I am concerned. He told me to be calm and remain confident and focused. He also told me that injury brings out the best of any player. We talked about football, life style and we talked about some games. He’s a great African man, and I can also regard him as a leader who always inspires friends and younger ones on how they can be at the top.

You share some playing qualities with Samuel Eto’o in terms of speed and strength?

Yes and I am also looking forward to being a player in his calibre. But that can only be achieved with hard work and not on the pages of newspaper.

Don’t you think this injury could have robbed you of good mention for the 2013 African Footballer of the Year?

Honestly speaking, all those things are not on my mind whenever I am on the pitch; I don’t think about individual glory but collective glory of the team. It has been in me, I can’t change. I always like to make my team mates happy. During the AFCON, I never thought of becoming the top scorer, my eyes were on the trophy. When fans were tipping Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana as the AFCON 2013 favourites, it really challenged me and my team mates in the Super Eagles. Challenge in the sense that, we as individuals are better than some of these players. We have a good team and a great coach and we are motivated, so why can’t we go all the way and shock these critics? Sincerely speaking, I never discussed it with anybody, but whenever I see myself on the starting list, my muscles always rise to go out there and fight for my country. It is true that I aimed to return to my club with my AFCON form, not injury, but things just went the way they went. I still have many years to play and maybe claim the African footballer of the year award.

You were quoted to have said a player got you injured, was it intentional?

No! It was not intentional. I actually wanted to play the ball while the goal keeper was trying to stop me and unfortunately he hit my knee, so I can’t fault him. And it was not anybody’s fault.

You have been cleared of match-fixing allegation in Turkey after several months of threats…

Justice at last! I am not only happy that I was cleared but the same story has been re-written at world stage. If you could remember in my last interview that I don’t know anything about it, that justice must prevail in my favour. I never knew anything about the whole issue and thank God that it has been cleared. And you can see that it has never affected my game because God knows that I am innocent. But to God be the glory.

It seems you have faced a lot of stress on the match-fixing allegation?

My brother, the Lord is my shepherd. And I am thanking the God Almighty that I am serving; He has not let me down on this issue. But do you know the truth of the whole thing is that I remain focused. I saw it as lesson to rise to the top, I saw it as one of the challenges I must face to be there. Now, it is over, no more Emenike! Emenike! Emenike! Some people still went on to fabricate their own story in Nigeria, but I forgive them.

You have won the AFCON trophy and top scorer award and being in the Confederation of African Football Best XI. What else do you dream of winning at the continental level?

There are lots of things I still dream about to do at the continental level. I still want to win more AFCON trophies for Nigeria, taking Nigeria to the top spot on the rank and achieve the best ever honour of winning the World Cup. Also, there are other individual honours I will like to win in Africa, but for now I want to work harder to reach that level.

What makes you to be so strong and fast; do you put in extra training?

I don’t do any special training for that, everything is from God. I think it is natural. I have been rugged from the start of my career on the street. I do admit that I could be rugged because of some huge defenders who may likely take you for a ride. But when they notice you are also smart and strong, and then the battle will be 50-50. Anyway, I love my style because that has helped me a lot.

Vows to start hitting headlines on return

Nigeria Premier League All Time Highest Goals Scorer in a single season, Jude Aneke has confirmed that he is gradually recovering from the toe injury that has sidelined him for close to three weeks now.

Aneke plays for Al Masry in the Egyptian league but currently on loan at El Dakhleya owing to the suspension of Al Masry from this season’s top flight after the ugly crowd violence scene witnessed in their 2-1 home win over giants, El Ahly which left over 70 fans dead and others injured.

The light skinned player has netted once for Dakhleya since teaming up with the club but his current plight with injury has slowed down his resolve to add more goals to his account.

The Enugu born player has however revealed that he has commenced intense training towards regaining full match fitness and that very soon he would start banging in goals for his Egyptian club.

“I have not added to the one goal I scored the other time. I got my toe injured about three weeks ago and it has kept me out of football for about four games now.

“But I have started training now and very soon I will start playing again,” Aneke, whose 20 league goals during the 2010/2011 season in the colours of Kaduna United has not been broken stated from his base on Tuesday Morning.

He joined Warri Wolves briefly last season before he got the deal in Egypt.

  • Akpala suffers knee injury

    Akpala suffers knee injury

Former Super Eagles ace, Joseph Akpala, has injured his knee while in a training session with his Werder Bremen mates.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf and athletics trainer Reinhard Schnittker had to support the Nigerian on his way to the changing room, where the 26-year-old was examined after a collision with goalkeeper Raphael Wolf in training Sunday morning. The initial diagnosis in the scan revealed a collateral ligament damage to his left knee.

“There was contact when he attempted a shot and the knee got turned. We have to assume that Joseph will not be immediately available,” said Schaaf.

The team on Monday decided on the next step with the striker.

The coaching staff will definitely not have the services of Kevin De Bruyne on Sunday and Monday as the Belgian will miss training for private reasons. There was good news about captain Clemens Fritz as he recovered from the flu and trained again with his teammates after missing a week of practice.

    MRI scan for injury-hit Okani

    : Flying Eagles settle in

Flying Eagles goalkeeper Samuel Okani underwent an MRI scan yesterday to ascertain the extent of his right hand injury.

Okani returned to full training after he injured his right hand during a recent test game, but continued to complain about pains in the hand, thus making a scan necessary. The Enyimba shot stopper was first choice and skipper during the qualifying series for the 2013 African Youth Championship.

His mates at the Flying Eagles have settled down fully at the Tunisia training camp despite the freezing temperatures.

The temperatures sometimes dip to as low as three degrees centigrade during training, but the Nigeria U-20s are determined this will not affect their schedule or their resolve to keep their African Youth Championship in Algeria next month. They are fully kitted with woollen hand gloves and other warm items of clothing to keep away the chill.

Temperatures in Algeria range from 11 degrees to 17 degrees, meaning the warmest in Tunisia will be the coldest in Algeria.

“Tunisia is a lot colder than Algeria and so it is a good preparation for us,” said team doctor Ozi Salami. Today has a forecast of four degrees but thankfully it is expected to be very sunny. The team will do gym work and use the Jacuzzi this afternoon.

Coach John Obuh has so far worked on the players’ endurance, passing and combination play.

Wikki Tourists star forward Umar Aminu has fully recovered from an ankle complaint and took part in the full squad workout on Monday night at the Esperance training complex in Tunis for the second straight day.

“Aminu is fit and we do not have any serious injury worries,” said team physio Nnaemeka Alozie.

The acting Nigerian ambassador to Tunisia Mansur Abdularim Mambilla has on a daily basis checked on the team personally. He was at the team’s training Monday night. Also, former Sunshine Stars forward Izu Azuka, who is with Esperance, has looked in on the team.

The Flying Eagles will play their first match since their arrival in Tunisia on Thursday by 3.30pm against the Tunisia U-20s, who moved into the El Mouradi Hotel on Monday.

Incidentally, Nigeria’s Group B foes Gabon are due at the El Mouradi Tuesday week to also acclimatise ahead of the AYC in Algeria. They are also scheduled to face the Tunisia U-20s on March 9.

  • No injury worries for me, says Emenike

No injury worries for me, says Emenike

Despite the injury scare to Super Eagles striker and leading scorer in the on-going Africa Cup of Nations, Emmanuel Emenike, the Spartak Moscow of Russia bulky striker has told soccer loving Nigerians that he would be ready for the final battle against Burkina Faso in the final match against Mali slated for the National Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday.

“The injury is not a major one and I don’t want Nigerians to panic or worry about it. It was just a minor brush and I will be ready for the Mali match. Nothing can stop me from playing with God’s backing”, he told SportingLife in Durban.

He also reiterates his ambition to help the Eagles to win the 2013 AFCON as well as emerge the Highest Goal Scorer of the tournament. Firstly I thank God for helping the team to this stage and I am happy for the four goals I scored already. But like I said I want help Nigeria win this (AFCON) Trophy and I want to win the Highest Goals scorer award at the end of the tournament. This is my ambition. I have been working hard with the team to this stage and I am ready to do more to achieve my ambition”, Emenike declared.

He was also elated for playing in his first ever Nations Cup that he even went straight to the final. “I have played in the club competition against a top side like Barcelona and we excel. I am now going to play in my first ever Nations Cup final, there is nothing to compare with the joy in me now. I have prayed to God I want it to be memorable,” he prayed.

He, however, warned his teammates not to treat Burkina Faso with kid-gloves. “We had a very good game in the semi-final match against Mali. I really enjoyed myself in the match. The match against Burkina Faso will be tougher than Mali and we need to work very hard to be able to beat Burkina Faso. We were lucky to convert most of the scoring chances that came our way in the match against Mali and I pray that this should happen in the final match. But I am confident that we will win the Cup by the grace of God,” he prayed.

Nigeria striker Emmanuel Emenike’s injury is not serious,

while a scan will be carried out for Victor Moses, officials have disclosed.

Alaiya said, “Emenike’s injury is not serious, he had just a knock which is minor. He should be fit for final, but we are waiting for the medical report on him which should be ready by lunch time.”

Emenike has scored four goals so far in the tournament with two assists to top the goals chart at the AFCON in South Africa.

He suffered what look like a hamstring injury while shooting from long range at goal against Mali on Wednesday.

“We hope it is not serious and he will play the final,” said Keshi.

  • Okala calls for calm over Ejide’s injury

Okala calls for calm over Ejide’s injury

Former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala on Tuesday said that there was no cause for alarm over the injury sustained by Super Eagles goalkeeper Austin Ejide.

Ejide sustained a hamstring injury during the team’s international friendly match against Cape Verde Islands in Faro, Portugal on Jan. 9.

Okala, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka, cautioned sports analysts to be mindful of how they discussed the issue to avoid distracting the team’s coaches. The 1980 Nations Cup-winning goalkeeper with the Green Eagles said that it was only the coaches, led by Stephen Keshi, that could tell the real situation of the player.

Okala said the three goalkeepers in the team were the best in the country for now, adding that Ejide’s unfortunate injury had not impacted negatively on the team.

“Ejide’s injury is unfortunate but he has not been ruled out of the tournament and there are two other goalkeepers in the team, so they can hold the fort until he recovers. People should stop nursing unnecessary fears or causing distractions over the issue; let us not try to rank or rate the players when we are not with the team. The coaches are in the best position to tell what the situation in camp is and they have not complained of any cause to change the formation,’’ Okala said.

He, however, attributed the alarm to ignorance about the quality of the players in camp, especially Chigozie Agbim, who, he said, had been “doing wonderfully well with Rangers International FC of Enugu.

“Agbim has been doing well in Rangers recently, he is an excellent goalkeeper; he is in great form. I am telling you what I know about very well, coaches are realists, they work with the best available at any given time,’’ he added.

Okala urged lovers of the game to pray and support Keshi and his lads to do their best for the country at the tournament.
