  • ‘Compulsory speed limiter installation begins next year’

‘Compulsory speed limiter installation begins next year’

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRCS) has said the enforcement of speed limiter installation will commence on April 1, next year. It said advisory enforcement is slated to begin from January 1 to end of March.

It said the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and other relevant agencies have resolved to work together from next year to reduce accidents on the roads from the high figures recorded last year.

To this end, the Corps said collaboration with SON and other stakeholders to introduce speed limiters in vehicles plying the nation’s roads has been initiated.

Speaking at Itam Central Motor Park, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital during the Akwa Ibom FRSC mega rally road safety campaign, Corps Marshal and Chief Executive FRSC, Mr. Boboye Oyemi represented by Deputy Corps Marshal DCM Adei Abu said road safety has become a huge multi-sectoral issue.

On why the rally is very important, the FRSC boss said Nigeria accounts for the largest road network in West Africa and the second largest south of the Sahara, adding that, therefore, all hands should be on deck to confront road mishaps.

Oyeyemi noted that three per cent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is lost yearly to road traffic crashes. “In 2014 alone, Nigeria lost N1.7 trillion, an equivalent of $10 billion to road traffic crashes. This is simply huge and unacceptable for a country where poverty incidence is still high,” he said.

Between 1960 and the third quarter of this year, Nigeria has recorded 344,367 road accident related deaths with most of the dead being within the productive age. The Akwa Ibom rally is therefore one of the means aimed at reversing the trend, Oyeyemi said adding that the efforts of the Corps last year resulted in the reduction of road mishaps by 42 per cent, reducing the total from 760 road crashes in 2013 to 439 last year.

He said the efforts of the Corps recorded 49 per cent reduction in deaths from road crashes where 257 deaths were recorded last year compared to 504 in 2013.

He said the Corps Headquarters 2015 ‘Ember month’ special patrol with the theme: Driving Safely into 2016, is designed to consolidate on the success recorded last year.

He assures Nigerians that the Corps has put strategies in place to ensure that travelers travel in safety, in comfort, unhindered and to ensure no one sleeps on the road or marks the festivities on the road as recovery vehicles to remove obstructions that may hinder free flow of traffic have been mobilised.

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of transport, Mr Effiong Abia, urged the people to imbibe safe driving culture as advocated the FRSC.  He noted the good road infrastructure across the state will further assist in curbing road crashes.

Governor Emmanuel noted that efforts by FRSC in the state is seen in the low road crashes recorded in the state, noting that this year’s theme will even do more for the people to have attitudinal change in the state and the nation at large.

  • Tension in Ekiti community over monarch’s installation

There is tension in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, three days after the installation of Oba Afeez Sulaiman as the new Alawo of Awo-Ekiti.

Sulaiman was presented with the instruments of office by Governor Ayo Fayose on Friday after the youth of the community had protested for nearly three hours.

One of the princes who contested for the Alawo seat with Sulaiman, Bunmi Alade, was reported to have died “mysteriously” on Thursday at 8.30 am.

His remains were yet to be buried when the government decided to present the staff of office to Sulaiman on Friday.

The Awo youths maintained that the installation of Alawo should be delayed as long as Alade’s body was still in the mortuary.

They had trooped out at 9am blocking the major road that passes through the town, singing war songs.

The protesters held palm fronds and poured ashes and coconut oil at many junctions.

Condemning the circumstances surrounding the emergence of the Alawo, they alleged that the oracle was sidelined, which they said was contrary to tradition.

Motorists and commuters passing through the community had a hard time as traffic, commercial and social activities were paralysed.

The protesters later stormed the palace square, venue of the installation ceremony, and upturned canopies and chairs arranged for the programme.

    Fayose visited the deceased’s family.

A source said locals are  living in fear after Friday’s protest.

Security has been strengthened to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

He said: “There is tension in our town (Awo) and nobody knows what may happen next because the youth are not happy with the circumstances surrounding Alade’s death.

“He was invited to a meeting and few hours later, he fell ill and was rushed to at least two hospitals in Ado-Ekiti.

“What pained the youth was that they suspected foul play in his death and that government supposed to have postponed the installation.”

Police spokesman Alberto Adeyemi could not be reached for comments.

  • Court stops monarch’s planned installation

An Ado-Ekiti High Court has ordered parties in the kingship crisis rocking Orin-Odo community in Ikole Local Government Area to maintain status quo ante bellum, pending the hearing and determination of motion on notice.

Justice Dele Omotoso gave the order yesterday in a ruling after listening to a motion ex-parte by counsel to the claimants/applicants, Dr. Babalola Abegunde.

He subsequently adjourned the substantive suit till September 30.

A contestant for the Olorin of Orin-Odo stool, Babatunde Matthew Ejioye, filed the motion ex-parte alongside three others against Akintayo Ogunjobi, and six others.

There was tension in Orin-Odo yesterday, following reports that Governor Ayo Fayose had concluded arrangements to present staff of office and instruments of appointment to the second defendant, Femi Ogunjobi today.

The claimants averred that the first defendant convened a meeting on July 27 and arbitrarily screened them out from the kingship race to pave way for Femi, his son and Adebisi Ogunjobi, his younger brother and third defendant.

In his ruling, Justice Omotoso said: “The reasonable inference that this court can draw from this is that all parties in this suit are aware of the pendency of this suit as well as a motion for an order of interlocutory injunction.

“There is need for parties to respect the sanctity of this court by maintaining status quo ante bellum in respect of the Olorin of Orin-Odo Ekiti chieftaincy stool, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

“Consequently, the motion is hereby adjourned till September 30.

“The order of this interim injunction shall abate September 30. Hearing notice shall be issued and served on the parties or their learned counsel by the bailiff of this honorable court.”

  • “No row over Ikorodu monarch’s installation”

“No row over Ikorodu monarch’s installation”

There is no row over last month’s appointment and presentation of staff of office to Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi as the 19th Ayangburen of Ikorodu town in the Lagos East senatorial district, by former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, Chief Babatunde Akuko, a member of the Lasunwon ruling house and traditional ruler of Owutu community in the area, has said.

Reacting to a recent newspaper publication, Aluko who was named as one of the authors of the said publication, also said it is not true that himself and some other erstwhile contestants to the throne, called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to withheld the approval of Shotobi as Ayangburen of Ikorodu. “The report is nothing but outright lie,” he said.

The traditional ruler who spoke to The Nation yesterday, said the publication is the handiworks of trouble makers who are not even members of the ruling house. “The authors are mischief makers who are obviously not members of our family. That is why they wrongly and criminally named me as one of the authors of the fictitious publication. If they are members of our family, they will not need to lie against anybody who is not party to their allegations,” Aluko said.

He added that though he was one of the contestants amongst others including Oba Shotobi, he is satisfied with the emergence of the new Ayangburen as the process that produced him was satisfactorily done by all the parties involved. According to him, all those who contested the throne with Oba Shotobi are now ready to work with him in the interest of Ikoroduland.

“There is no row whatsoever. All contestants name were forwarded by the ruling house to the Kingmakers for consideration. And the Kingmakers unanimously chose Shotobi as the next King, in accordance with Obas and Chiefs law of Lagos State.

His selection was subsequently approved by the Lagos State Executive Council on the 25th of May, 2015 and former Governor Fashola presented him with the Staff of Office the next day,”Aluko said.

I think with that, the process was duly concluded and all matters rested. That is why I actively participated both morally and financially in his installation process and I will continue to support him as long as I live,” Aluko explained.

He then called on Governor Ambode to ignore the antics of the faceless authors of the mischievous publication while also calling on the perpetrators of the act to shun sentiments and embrace peace in the interest of Ikorodu.
