    Sagay: Obasanjo’s comments insulting, inappropriate

•Agbakoba: Buhari has nothing to offer •Falana: statement a wake-up call •Ubani: letter overdue

Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) chairman Prof Itse Sagay (SAN) last night said it was insulting for former President Olusegun Obasanjo to ask President Muhammadu Buhari not to run for second term.

Sagay urged Obasanjo, who he said sought third term, to show Buhari some “respect”.

He said: “I saw Obasanjo’s comments and I could not believe my eyes, that a man who tried to get a third term is discouraging someone else from getting a second term. It doesn’t make sense.

“I think Obasanjo should try and respect other people. He has achieved a lot. He is a great man and I respect him. But he should learn to respect other people and think of them as being, at least, as good as himself.

“I think it is insulting for a man who wanted third term to tell somebody else not to want second term. It is most inappropriate, and for a former head of state to say so is most improper.”

But, a former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and leader of the National Intervention Movement (NIM) Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) said President Buhari has nothing more to offer.

He described Obasanjo’s suggestion for Buhari not to run for second term as “great”.

Agbakoba said: “It (Obasanjo’s call) is a great idea as Buhari hasn’t anything left to offer. We at the Third Force will build a new coalition to take power.”

Activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) described Obasanjo’s statement as a wake-up call for President Buhari. He advised the President to shed himself of the influence of “an incompetent and corrupt cabal”.

Falana said: “President Olusegun Obasanjo’s intervention is a vivid expression of the frustration of the Nigerian people with the Buhari administration.

“The statement is a clarion call on President Buhari to remove the incompetent and corrupt cabal of power mongers that has hijacked political power from him. Through sheer nepotism and cronism, the regime has lost the massive goodwill that heralded it to power.

“The success recorded in the fight against insurgency in the northeast zone has been eroded in the wave of kidnapping and reckless killing of unarmed Nigerians by AK47-bearing herdsmen.

“The success of the fight against corruption and impunity has been rubished by the inability of the regime to remove corrupt public officers.

“President Obasanjo’s challenge has been taken up by many Nigerians who have already formed a coalition of genuine progressive forces to liberate Nigeria from internal colonialism and imperialist control.”

Mr. Dele Adesina (SAN), declined to comment on the contents of ex-President Obasanjo’s letter because he considered it a purely political matter, not a legal one.

He, however, observed that “there’s nothing one can say that will determine whether the President should run or should not run; it is his constitutional right to do so. I don’t want to join in any controversy.”

Although Vice President, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Monday Ubani felt Obasanjo’s letter was long overdue, he warned that Obasanjo should not see himself as the determiner of Nigerians’ fate.

He said only Nigerians could choose who they would vote for.

Ubani said: “Former President Obasanjo’s letter to President Muhammadu Buhari was long expected and, for coming now, I will say it is even belated.

“Recall that former President Obasanjo has written such letters to virtually everyone that took over from him and if you will remember such letters were even written to former military leaders like IBB and Abacha.

“Such scathing and virulent attacks on leaders before and after him are therefore not novel. What is novel is that he did not initiate the attack on President Buhari timeously, due to some personal reasons known to him.

“However, former president Obasanjo should not allow this idea to get into his head that he has become the ‘power and principality’ that will always determine the political direction of Nigeria. “Nigerians should always know when they are tired of any government and should determine the fate of their leaders, including President Buhari if at all he decides to contest in 2019, and when they so decide it is not because former President Obasanjo instructed them but because they are tired of the ‘Change.’

“My humble take about Nigeria is that the destiny of Nigeria should not be seen to be in the hands of these supposed ‘powers and principalities’ of Nigerian politics but in the hands of the majority of Nigerians who must always have their way. That is the way for us to go and it is my dream for my dear country.

“Nigerians will not reject President Buhari in 2019 because former President Obasanjo said so but because President Buhari may have wittingly or unwittingly rejected Nigerians. He alone by now should know his status with Nigerians. A word is enough for the wise.”

Former member, Ogun State Judicial Service Commission, Abayomi Omoyinmi described the letter as one-sided.

Omoyinmi said: “President Obasanjo is entitled to his opinion on how he has perceived President Buhari. The fact of the matter is that every individual has his or her own way of approach to governance as it’s in this case. Ex-President Obasanjo has only highlighted what he believed are President Buhari’s flaws in his style of governance.

“I am of the opinion that the content in the letter is one sided in that it lacked constructive criticism, because Obasanjo failed to at least highlight the good things that have been achieved by President Buhari within just three years and under an extremely difficult circumstances created by many years of previous administration misrule.”

Employee ‘kills’ Chinese boss for insulting his mother

An employee Amos Okechukwu has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing his Chinese boss, Alice Xu.

Okechukwu, a casual worker at the victim’s firm, allegedly committed the offence around 8pm on Friday at Tayo Close, Akinola Cole Estate, Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja.

It was gathered that the suspect sneaked into the deceased residence and suffocated her with a pillow for “ridiculing my mother.”

Having suffocated the victim, Okechukwu was said to have ransacked her residence, carted away about N800,000 and $2,000 cash he found.

He was said to have disguised as a mad person to avoid raising suspicions at the estate gate manned by policemen and private guards, but was identified by one of the guards who notified the police.

It was gathered that the suspect was instantly arrested and the deceased’s residence contacted without response.

The Nation gathered that guards were sent to the premises and it was discovered that the woman had died, promoting the transfer of the suspect to Man Centre Police Division.

A source said the suspect claimed he wanted to teach the woman a lesson for the frequent verbal assaults he received from her.

The source said: “He alleged that the woman had been very insulting and disrespectful and that he felt humiliated. He said the woman even insulted his mother.

“He entered her apartment when she had slept and tied her up. He covered her mouth and nose. The woman died because she could not breathe properly. He said he only wanted to punish her and did not mean to kill her. N800,000 and $2,000 belonging to the woman were recovered from him.”

According to a worker in the estate, the house has been shut since Friday.

He said: “It was when I came to work the following day that I learnt about the incident. I was shocked. The woman was young and usually jogged around the estate. I think it was greediness that made him kill her.”

  • Stop insulting Igbinedion, APC tells Ize-Iyamu

Stop insulting Igbinedion, APC tells Ize-Iyamu

Edo State Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Osakpamwan Eriyo, has warned factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to stop insulting and embarrassing former Governor Lucky Igbinedion.

Igbinedion was absent at the flag-off of campaigns of Pastor Ize-Iyamu.

Eriyo challenged the PDP leadership to explain to Edo people why the former governor would not be leading the PDP campaign.

In a  press statement in Benin City,  Eriyo said it was shocking to see about eighty names in the campaign train of Ize-Iyamu but the name Lucky Igbinedion under whom Pastor Ize-Iyamu served both as Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government  was missing.

The statement reads: “We see this as an insult and we demand an explanation from the Orbih led PDP. It is more shocking because everybody in Edo state knows the relationship between Ize-Iyamu and Igbinedion so how come he is being omitted in the list of those who will campaign for Ize-Iyamu.

“Ize-Iyamu was Igbinedion’s Personal Assistant when he was the Chairman of Oredo. When Lucky became governor, he made Ize-Iyamu Chief of Staff and later, the SSG. Why is it that Igbinedion’s name is missing on that list, or is Pastor Ize-Iyamu saying that he does not have confidence in the same person that made him”.

  • Stop insulting Buhari, Fayose warned

    Stop insulting Buhari, Fayose warned

Former Special Adviser on Housing in Abia State, Nwabueze Onwuneme, has called on the governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, to maintain some respect not just for his exalted office as a state chief executive but also for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He specifically warned the governor to stop insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and the Judiciary.

Onwuneme, a youth activist, wondered why Fayose would continue to make what he described as “seditious and inciting statements against not only President Muhammadu Buhari but also the Nigerian judiciary.”

According to him, “Fayose should have realised that the fact that no one joins issues with him is not because there is nothing to say about him. His antics is not coming as a surprise, knowing his antecedents for showmanship, which propels him to always crave to be in the news even for the wrong reasons. This same Mr. Fayose, during his thanksgiving service to celebrate his electoral victory (hope the panel set up by the Nigeria Army to investigate the Ekiti election phone conversation will vindicate his victory at the polls) was seen rolling on the floor, thanking God and saying he would govern with the fear of God only to desecrate the temple of justice and reportedly sending on exile members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly. Often times he has openly called on the good people of Ekiti State, most especially the youths, to rise up to defend his mandate while his own children will be posting pictures of their posh cars on instagram.

“Fayose should know that Nigerians are now really bored and no longer look forward to his personal daily attacks on Mr. President who he wished dead, but who God, in His mercies, did not just give life to but went ahead to make a two time President.

“He should please get serious with his work as Ekiti State governor, acknowledging that governance is not a tea party by delivering on his electoral promises to the people of Ekiti State.”

Your actions insulting, Deji tells Igbo

The Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo, has accused the Igbo in Akure of  insubordination.

He accused them of violating the tradition of the ancient capital of Ondo State.

The 48th Akure monarch alleged that the Igbo have no respect for him or the town’s culture.

According to Oba Aladetoyinbo, Igbo traders often violated the town’s culture and tradition.  He said efforts to caution them had failed.

The Deji, who spoke through the Asamo of Akure land, Rotimi Olusanya, alleged that the Eze Ndigbo, Sir Gregory Ilehohika, recently embarrassed him and some of his chiefs in his palace.

The Igbo last week alerted to alleged plot by the Deji-in-council to dethrone the Eze Ndigbo.

They protested against the planned closure of their businesses and markets in Akure.

However, Oba Aladetoyinbo alleged that the Igbo trading at Mojere market recently contravened  the rules guiding the market, which he said led to the invitation of some Igbo leaders, including the Eze Ndigbo, to the palace.

The monarch noted that the Eze Ndigbo refused to carry out his order to eject illegal traders from Mojere market.

He stressed that Akure is reputed to be peaceful, loving, accommodating and law abiding.

Oba Aladetoyinbo said: “We shall continue to allow integration of all Nigerians, but we will not allow anyone to degrade or trample upon our tradition and institution.”

But the President, Ohaneze Ndigbo in Ondo State, Okechukwu Okorie, earlier said the Igbo are law abiding and peaceful, adding that they respect their traditions and those of other ethnic groups.

He said the Igbo leaders who went to the Deji’s palace to honour his invitation were beaten up by some irate youths at the palace.

Okorie said the Deji was being misinformed by some individuals on the activities of the Igbo in Akure.

  • Stop insulting Oyo workers, says APC

Stop insulting Oyo workers, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has warned the governorship candidates of Accord, Rashidi Ladoja and his counterpart in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Seyi Makinde, to stop insulting civil servants, who they alleged have been forced to support Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

In a statement by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, the APC faulted the allegations that Governor Abiola Ajimobi was coercing civil servants, including teachers, to support his re-election bid.

The statement reads: “In Oyo State, and indeed across the globe, public/civil servants, including teachers are recognised as a population of discerning, informed and dynamic minds. Therefore, it would be wrong for any individual, group or political party to describe them as worthless puppets, who could be treated with disdain or disrespect in the name of playing politics.

“For the record, Sen. Ajimobi has impacted positively on the lives of teachers more than any other governor before him.

“He has instituted life insurance policy for civil and public servants;  100 per cent upward review of housing loans for civil and public servants from N1million to N2million;  150 per cent upward review of car loans to civil and public servants from N200,000 to N500,000; clearing of outstanding promotions for workers spanning 2009 to 2012; raising the bar of graduate primary school teachers from GL 14 to 15 and gazzetting the employment of public primary and secondary school teachers.

“And to crown it all, Ajimobi administration has prevented the people of the state including workers from falling victims of insecurity and political violence while it also reduced the workload of teachers with the recent appointment of 5,300 people to work in public schools as teaching and non-teaching staff.

  • Eguma sent off for insulting referee

Eguma sent off for insulting referee

Dolphins’ Manager Stanley Eguma was given the marching orders as Lobi Stars pipped the Port Harcourt side 1-0 through a stoppage time penalty converted by Terkaa Melai in a Week 16 NPFL match played at the Chief Akume Atongo Stadium, Katsina Ala Wednesday.

Eguma was given a red card in the 81st minute of the encounter after he was alleged to have insulted the assistant referee Shina Sadiq from Sokoto State.

The said game didn’t live up to the media hype given to it as both sides went into the recess goalless but it surged to life in the second half.

Two penalty kicks were awarded the home team in the 68th and 90th minutes of the match.

Chimaobi Nwaogu played the first spot kick into the waiting hands of Dolphins’ goalkeeper, Austin Brown but goaltender Melai made no mistake from the 12-yard spot when another chance was presented the home team after the centre referee Aminu Mammga from Zamfara adjudged that Lobi striker, Tony Okpotu was brought down in the vital area.

Meanwhile, Lobi coach, Dominic Iorfa has dedicated the home win to God after his side laboured to a 1-0 win over Dolphins.

The win improved Lobi’s points haul to 21 from 16 games while Dolphins are still on 24 points from same number of games. In Bauchi, Wikki Tourists have got their 6th win of the season after they defeated Kwara United 2-1.

Wikki got the curtain raiser in the 45th minute through Ibrahim Shaibu but Kwara United’s Kabiru Sanusi got the Afonja Warriors’ equaliser in the 48th minute. The tourists however got the match winner from the penalty spot in the 54th minute through Shakil Bolaji.

Wikki Tourists are now on 20 points from 16 games

  • Okwu denies insulting Ojukwu

Factional National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Maxi Okwu yesterday called on Igbo elders to caution the embattled national chairman, Victor Umeh, “against his penchant to blackmail anybody who differs with him.”

He spoke to reporters in Enugu while reacting to a statement credited to Umeh that he (Okwu) should apologise for insulting Ojukwu.

Umeh accused Okwu of describing the late APGA Leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, as an “extremist”, during the APGA convention in Awka, Anambra State, on Monday.

Okwu said he wondered why Umeh should attribute falsehood to people.

He said: “I hereby call on his people to apologise on what was clearly falsehood, as I never at any point called Ojukwu an extremist or used an abusive word against him.”

He insisted that Umeh, “from the manner he talks and the way he behaves these days, needs an assemblage of Igbo elders to talk sense into him and restrict him from attacking anyone who disagrees with him.”

Speaking further, Okwu said Umeh should allow the spirit of Ojukwu to rest in peace instead of invoking it at any given time to attract public sympathy.

He begged Igbo elders to explain to him that the dead, especially people of Ojukwu’s calibre, deserve some respect.

Okwu said as the new chairman of APGA, one of his cardinal points is reconciliation.

He said he had led a team of APGA chieftains to visit the founder of the party, Chekwas Okorie.

“And from our discussion, one could see that Chekwas Okorie has the political interest of Igbo people at heart, but everything about Umeh is selfishness,” Okwu added.
