  • Landlord to insure old, new buildings

Lagos State government is  to introduce mandatory insurance for all existing and new buildings in line with the Insurance Act 2003 provisions.

Lagos State Safety Commission, (LSSC) Director-General Mr. Hakeem Dickson,  said henceforth, it was mandatory for house owners and new ones under construction, to insure their property as stipulated by law.

He said Dickson was addressing reporters on ‘’naija safe Awards 2017.”He said in the event of disaster, victims would be able to access compensation from the insurance companies instead of having to wait on government every time.

Dickson said the state was already talking to a consortium of insurance companies through the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and that the measure, which is proactive, was to bring the state at par with developments around the world.

To ensure success of the exercise, Dickson said the commission has been reorganised and its members of staff reassigned to ensure innovative approach and better delivery of service to the public.

Speaking on the “naija safe awards 2017”, he said the event was meant to recognise, encourage outstanding performances and initiatives of organisations, individuals and groups towards promoting and raising safety consciousness among workers and citizens.

The Chief Coordinating Officer, naija Safe Awards 2017, Mr Femi Da-Silva, further explained that the award was aimed at promoting health, safety and environment (HSE) best practices in the workplace and generally raise safety consciousness.

Da-Silva said over 170 industry professionals attended the maiden edition of the award in 2015, while nominations were received from 15 states across the nation with 345 nominees from different sectors of the economy.

  • Why govt should insure 2016 budget, by insurers

Chieftains of the insurance industry have advised the government to insure the 2016 budget.

According to them, spending without protection or security will lead to a waste of government’s resources.

The Director-General, Nigeria Insurers Association (NIA), Sunday Thomas in a chat with The Nation, said insurers have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that insurance cover is obtained by the Ministries, Parastatals and Agencies (MDAs) for the execution of both capital and recurrent expenditure of the budget.

He said he met with officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and discussed the role of insurance in building the economy. He cited the loan and facilities the Federal Government wants to give to youths as an example, noting that the programme should have an insurance content to avoid waste of resources.

He said: “I attended a meeting with the CBN where we discussed the roles that insurance can play in building the economy. It was a meeting on inclusion. It was noted that one of the cardinals of this regime is to empower the people and this cannot be without insurance. They want to give loans and facilities to youth, but what is the insurance content. There should be a kind of life insurance to back it up. They must always give allowance for failure. Do they want to keep bringing money when there is failure?

“What or how will government ensure the monies to be spent on infrastructure are secured? What is sustainability plan? What is the insurance content in the roads they want build. Is government thinking of mortgage and the insurance content among others?

“At the meeting, they said it did not occur to them. I told them that whatever they are packaging, they should have insurance to avoid waste that characterised government spending in the past. They should avoid situations where money is spent by government and huge amount are wasted because there is no insurance. “

The CBN, he said, is now ready to key into insurance because they now understand what they should do, stressing that all they need to do as insurers is to develop products that can meet these needs. “By so doing, we are creating wealth and people who are employed can insure,” he said.

The Executive Director, Leadway Assurance, Mrs. Adetola Adegbayi urged governments at all levels to protect the spending of budget provisions with insurance.

According to her, insurance enables the economy because it is a supporter, a protection and security for life and assets. She encouraged all MDAs that have been allocated budget to insure their budgets.

“All ministries like ministry of works, depending on where they are putting the money have to do their own insurance. Apart from the group life which is for centralised employees or key assets, each parastatal and agency has its own insurances to do. So, they should all insure.

“Insurance is a support and security mechanism. It is embedded within the economy or outside the people within that economy to make everything go smoothly. Also, insurance is only dominant when people begin to understand what insurance is about and carries the message. Lekki Gardens for example was found not to be insured. So, insurance can only be dominant when people that are meant to insure are insuring.

“I encourage people to see insurance as fulfilling selfish interest especially for those who are meant to insure compulsorily. When people see insurance as a selfish aspect by feeling, I need to insure my assets so that I can recover my assets through insurance if anything happens, it will be easy for them to set aside little premium needed for insurance,” she said.

Adegabyi, however, called on insurers to create more awareness and be accessible to the public.

  • Insure each Eagles player with N160m – Kalu tells FG

Insure each Eagles player with N160m – Kalu tells FG

Former Abia State Governor and Pillar of Sports in Nigeria, Orji Uzor Kalu has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to insure each of the Super Eagles players with a sum of $1 million (N160 million) insurance cover so as to bring out the best in them.

The astute football administrator disclosed this in Abuja while chatting with the Kayode Adeniyi led Executive Committee of FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) who paid him a courtesy visit at his Abuja residence on Tuesday.

“I am using this medium to tell the Federal Government of Nigeria to come to the aid of football in this country by reassuring Super Eagles players that there is a bountiful reward for them and a mouth watering compensation if they get injured and can’t play the game that brings food to their families’ table.

“The Nigerian government can insure each player with an insurance accident cover of a million dollars (N160 million). This will definitely make them to put in their all whenever they come home to don the Super Eagles jerseys and play for their fatherland. They will know that Nigeria cares for them and there is something to fall back on in the event of a career threatening injury.

“This could be done because the percentage the government would pay on each $1 million dollars may not be minimal if it is worked out and not many of the players would have career threatening injuries. But the insurance cover on ground would always spur them to heartwarming performances whenever they star for Nigeria. These are the things that will make our darling Super Eagles to rank among the best not only in Africa but in the world”, Kalu disclosed.

He also went down memory lane, “some people did not know why Enyimba were chunning good results and how they the CAF Champions League back to back when I was governor of Abia State then. Each player was insured for N50 million. So, they always put in their best since they know that there is something on ground that can cater for them and their families in case they are injured. If I can do this, why can’t the Federal government do it for the Super Eagles players. Football has brought Nigeria fame and recognition all over the world and Nigerians are very passionate about the game. So the government should do it”.

The Pillar of Sports in Nigeria also promised to build the FCT Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Secretariat since the Association has already gotten the approval of a portion of land located at the Package B of the Abuja National Stadium, given to them (FCT SWAN) by the Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi recently.

“I am also going to work as a sports correspondent for my new Telegraph Newspaper that would hit the stand in Abuja this May. So since I am going to be a member of the FCT SWAN, I am using this medium to promise the Executive of FCT SWAN that by the special grace of God I will make sure the Association’s Secretariat is built”, he assured.

Insure yourselves, ICAN urges members in Jos

The Jos District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has urged its members to join the intitute’s life and accident insurance policy. It revealed that the district would bear 50 per cent premium of the policy as a welfare package for them.

The district also encouraged its members to constantly visit its websites where opportunities that could better their lot abound.

Speaking in Jos at the 2013 annual general meeting (AGM), Mr. Clement Suhunshak who was re-elected chairman of the group, decried the insignificant improvement which was recorded during his first tenure. This he attributed to the recurring problems the state experienced in the past. He assured that with the return of peace, the district would achieve success in the various activities lined up for the year.

Suhunshak further stated that sensitisation and creation of awareness which are cardinal goals of the district society were low. But as the district enters a new year, he said, a committee would be set up to face the challenge head-on in order to ensure that people, especially students in higher institutions in the state, align themselves with the society to make an impact in the accounting profession.

He also lamented the district’s inability to extensively organise workshops and seminars, even as he promised that there would be wide consultations to address the situation.

He said: “As signs of end-time, there was little or no improvement from the recent past years. The security situation was unabated; the prolonged strike of members of staff of the local government and tertiary institutions in the state affected the economic activities in no small measure, so much so that the Central Bank of Nigeria in Jos commented that the clearing house had its share of it.

“The sociological and psychological trauma rendered Jos in particular and Plateau State in general a no-go area for economic and educational events. These affected our activities in many areas.

“The incorporation of the thrift society in 2008 which was intended to empower members has really not achieved the purpose due to very low membership and non-commitment to remittance of monthly dues.”

On the insurance policy, he added: “It is still my candid advice that all members join the policy whose 50 per cent premium is borne by the district.”

High point of the event was the election of members of the new executive who would oversee the affairs of the society.
