Salah in Liverpool training but not expected to travel for Inter game

Mohamed Salah is not expected to be in Liverpool’s squad to face Inter Milan, despite taking part in training on Monday.

In an explosive interview at the weekend the 33-year-old forward said he felt like he had been “thrown under the bus” by the Reds amid the side’s struggles this season, and that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down.

Salah was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United – the third straight game the Egypt international has started on the bench.

Monday’s training took place before Liverpool face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, and Salah was involved while the session was open to the media.

Liverpool will fly out to Italy later this afternoon and Slot is scheduled to hold a news conference at about 18:45 GMT this evening.

Salah’s comments came after the Reds let a 2-0 lead slip in the draw at Leeds, with the Egypt international an unused substitute for the game.

The previous two games had seen Salah come on as a substitute in a 1-1 home draw at Sunderland, while he was left on the bench in a 2-0 win at West Ham.

His last start was in a 4-1 defeat by PSV Eindhoven at Anfield in a Champions League group game and his last goal came in a 2-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday, 1 November.

Salah has scored five goals in 18 appearances in the Premier League and Champions League this season.

Overall, he has 250 goals in 420 Liverpool appearances and his 29 top-flight goals in the 2024-25 campaign helped the Anfield side win the Premier League title last season.

Salah, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017, signed a new two-year contract with the club in April.

BBC Sport pundit and former England striker Wayne Rooney believes Salah is “destroying his legacy” at the club and that Slot should not involve the player against Inter or in a home match against Brighton on Saturday.

The game against the Seagulls comes before Salah is scheduled to join up with Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“In my head, I’m going to enjoy that game because I don’t know what is going to happen now,” said Salah.

“I will be in Anfield to say goodbye to the fans and go to Africa Cup of Nations. I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.”

Serie A  set to introduce referee body cams

The referee for the Serie A match between Juventus and Inter Milan on Saturday will be equipped with a body camera for the first time, the Italian league  has said.

The high-resolution micro-camera will be mounted on the referee’s headset and used during warm-ups, live match situations such as free kicks, and in replays.

The feed will also be available to the video assistant referee (VAR) with selected footage broadcast live.

The innovation has already been tested in the United States during the Club World Cup in July, and is part of a wider push by FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to enhance coverage of elite competitions.

“Serie A has always been at the forefront of adopting new technologies, aware of the central role they play in the evolution of television viewing, in promoting our product globally, and in ensuring transparency in refereeing decisions,” he added.

The Premier League will also be testing out referee cameras in selected matches for the new season, the BBC reported last month.

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are set to clash in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals for only the third time in history, with a coveted semifinal spot on the line.

This heavyweight encounter features two of Europe’s most decorated clubs, both currently leading their domestic leagues—Bayern topping the Bundesliga and Inter sitting comfortably atop Serie A.

Though similarly dominant at home, their journeys in Europe have been markedly different. Bayern thrives on high-intensity pressing and attacking flair, while Inter leans on tactical discipline and defensive organization.

With contrasting styles and high stakes, the tie promises a thrilling and strategic battle as both sides aim to solidify their place among Europe’s elite.

Only Barcelona have outscored Bayern Munich in Europe’s top five leagues this season, with the Bavarians netting an impressive 81 goals through 28 matchweeks of the Bundesliga.

Their attacking prowess is on full display, powered by an explosive frontline that has been nearly impossible to stop. In contrast, Inter Milan arrive at the quarterfinals with a formidable defensive record, having conceded just two goals across their 10 Champions League matches this season.

    2. Internazionale have lost four of their seven games against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League (W2 D1), but have eliminated them in both of their meetings in the knockout stages of the competition: 2-0 in the 2009-10 final and progressing on away goals over two legs in 2010-11 in the last 16 (3-3 on aggregate).

    3. Only Real Madrid (seven times) have eliminated Bayern Munich in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League more times than Internazionale (2), with the Italians being one of only five teams to have done so on more than one occasion (also two for Barcelona, Chelsea and Milan).

    4. Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their last 22 home matches in the UEFA Champions League (W17 D5), with the last visiting side to beat them in the competition being Paris SG in April 2021 (3-2 in the quarter-final first leg).

  • US firm takes over Serie A champions Inter Milan

US firm takes over Serie A champions Inter Milan

Inter Milan have been taken over by US investment fund Oaktree after the Serie A champions’ Chinese owners Suning missed a 395 million euro (£336.5m) debt repayment deadline.

Oaktree announced on Wednesday it has “assumed ownership” of Inter after Suning failed to repay a three-year loan that expired on 21 May.

Suning, which acquired the club in 2016, relinquishes control three days after Simone Inzaghi’s Inter team lifted the Serie A trophy.

“As the new ownership group, we understand the great responsibility towards the community and the historical legacy of Inter,” Oaktree managing director Alejandro Cano said in a statement.

“Our initial focus is operational and financial stability. We have great respect for Inter Milan’s management team and look forward to working closely with them to provide strong leadership for the club.”

Oaktree said it had provided Inter’s holding companies with rescue capital in May 2021 to “stabilise the club’s financial situation and enable it to continue operating, including to pay its players and employees”.

On Saturday, in a letter to fans, Inter chairman Steven Zhang – the 32-year son of Suning’s founder Zhang Jindong – said attempts to find an agreement with Oaktree had been unsuccessful.

Inter sealed their 20th  Italian title with five games to spare when they defeated arch-rivals and nearest challengers AC Milan in April.

  • Inter Milan reach agreement to sign Lukaku

Inter Milan have reached an agreement with Manchester United to sign striker Romelu Lukaku for a fee that could rise to 74 million pounds

Manchester United in July rejected Inter Milan’s 54 million pounds bid for Lukaku, who was fined by the club after missing training on Tuesday.

Lukaku’s agent, Federico Pastorello, flew to London on Wednesday in an attempt to resolve Lukaku’s future.

Later that evening, Pastorello posted a photo on Instagram of them on board a private jet with the caption: “Ready to take off. Direction Milano.”

United and Inter Milan had been some way apart in their valuation, with United wanting to recoup at least the 75 million pounds they paid Everton two years ago.

Inter and fellow Serie A side Juventus have been competing to sign Lukaku, who did not play in pre-season because of an ankle injury.

Inter manager Antonio Conte – who wanted to sign Lukaku when he was Chelsea boss – has said he remains his number one target, adding: “I consider him a player who could improve our team.”

United have an interest in Juventus’ Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic, 33, who could reinforce their forward options.

  • Race against Time! Inter Milan table £70million for  Lukaku

Less than 24 hours to the close of transfer window in England, injury time hope appears to be rising for want away Manchester United ace Romelu Lukaku.

Inter Milan have made a new £70million bid for Romelu Lukaku as the Manchester United striker edges closer to leaving Old Trafford.

Inter’s bid, which includes bonuses, is closer to the £75m United are demanding after rejecting a £54m offer from the Italian club last month.

It comes after a dramatic twist in the transfer saga this week when Lukaku turned up at training with his old club Anderlecht without United’s permission and was fined two weeks’ wages – a total of £400,000.

The 26-year-old trained with Anderlecht for a third day with officials there believing he is on his way to London where his agent Federico Pastorello has been in talks with United and Inter in an effort to end the impasse.

It’s understood that Lukaku’s camp are increasingly confident a deal can be done after Inter increased their bid. Although the transfer window in England closes at 5pm on Thursday, it will remain open in Italy until September 2.

That gives all three parties plenty of time to reach agreement, but there is a general acceptance that the deal needs to be completed as soon as possible after Lukaku’s relationship with United broke down.

He has angered the club by training with Anderlecht’s Under-18s the past two days, and was informed by email of the fine.

Lukaku also upset his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and teammates at the weekend when he posted confidential stats from a sprint session to prove that he is one of the club’s quickest players.

Lukaku was second only to Diogo Dalot, but the stats also showed that Luke Shaw finished last behind Juan Mata and Nemanja  Matic.

Solskjaer told Lukaku to delete the post from his Twitter account and reminded him of his responsibilities.

  • Napoli to rival Inter Milan for Lukaku

Napoli wants to beat Inter Milan to the signing of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Sportsmail revealed on Tuesday that the Red Devils are willing to sell the Belgian, but only if their £80million valuation is met.

La Gazzetta dello Sport now claims that Napoli will make an ambitious bid to land Lukaku ahead of their Serie A rivals. The Italian newspaper says that Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti wants to pay around £62m for the former Everton star, which is well below the figure United are looking for.

Lukaku is said to prefer a move to Inter over Napoli, with both clubs able to offer him Champions League football next season. The ex-Chelsea forward is keen to link up with new boss Antonio Conte at the San Siro as he plans a big summer overhaul of his squad.

La Gazzetta dello Sport also claims that the Italian has been given the go-ahead to sign Roma striker Edin Dzeko and that he is in pole position to land Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella.

If Conte gets the green light to sign Lukaku too, United will turn their attention to Frankfurt forward Sebastien Haller.

The 24-year-old target man has been scouted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s staff, although he is one of a number of attacking players on United’s radar.
