  • Intercontinental Hotel unveils Chef Kong

For many Nigerian diners, the Chinese cuisines have become food that they have grown to love. This has led to many Chinese restaurants springing up and the Nigerian public has taken to their meals.

Intercontinental Hotel says it is introducing a new and vastly experienced Chinese chef that specializes in modern Chinese delicacies and fusions of Chinese food with local food spices and flavours. The hotel unveiled its new Chinese chef, Mr.  Chua Kong. He will be preparation modern Chinese cuisines at the hotel’s Soho Restaurant.

Speaking on the new chef, the director of food and beverages, Mr. Ahmed Raza, said it was part of the efforts to offer the Nigerian diners the best: “We have a new chef on Chinese cuisines. He has come with vast experience from different parts of Asia. He was worked in India and Malaysia. His main area of expertise is modern Chinese cuisines. The idea is that Chinese cuisines are very popular in this part of the world, especially Nigeria.

“A lot of families come to us and what we want to give to them is Chinese food with a Nigerian twist. We will be focusing on the spices and we want to make authentic Chinese flavour with the Nigerian flavour. That is our target market. We want to reach out to the local Nigerian diner who loves Chinese food and we will make sure we give them the best Chinese food.”

On his target market, he said: “Obviously, our main target is the local Nigerian market. That is our ideal focus. So, if that is our target market, why not create flavours that they will appreciate? That is the exact idea behind this.

“That is the reason we have hired a new Chinese chef, Shua’s great experience in blending flavours. He has done that in India, China and Malaysia, and I am sure he will approach this task with the same zeal and enthusiasm. We revisit our tastes and we pander to the taste of local Nigerians. I am sure Shua has the ability to really conquer the hearts of Nigerians.”

Chef Kong said he was excited and that the experience in Nigeria was “very good experience because of the culture of the people in Nigeria, the flavour. In other countries, the taste is different. Here your food is more spicy. So, now we come with menus that have more variety in terms of spice.

“We have dishes for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Our cuisine is a modern Chinese cuisine with authentic sauce, but we do the fusion to come up with something exciting and different. We have about 27 sauces and all the dishes are different and unique. We serve the dishes with the sauces.”

  • Intercontinental adds Sunday Brunch

Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos is currently providing families in Lagos a chance for quality weekend outdoor dining. The culinary offering by the hotel includes champagne and international dishes from different parts of the world.

The idea, according to the hotel, is to give both locals and foreign guests opportunity to enjoy meals from different parts of the world.

Speaking on the innovation at the hotel, Mr. Ahmed Raza, the director of food and beverages, said: “What we want to promote is family festivity each week. We want the families to come here and have a great time with the music, the children activities that we have, with the dishes that we have that represent Nigerian, Italian, Indian favorites; we have cuisines from all around the world.

“It is just for the families to come around, have a great meal, and enjoy their time together every week. That is what we are aiming at. Sunday Brunch is a meal where people get together and  celebrate every week.“

The Sunday Brunch has turned the Ekaabo Restaurant of the hotel into a beehive of merriment with live music .

Raza said the new offering has been successful: “The culinary experience is coming very strong because what we have done is to merge all the flavours . We have a lot of strong chefs with us. We have Italian chefs, pastry chefs, Chinese chefs and a very strong group of local chefs.

“Fusing all these chefs together is making a lot of difference that is really setting us apart. We are offering a wide range of varieties at Intercontinental that is strong point for us. At Sunday Brunch, we bring all these flavours together at one platform. That is why people are coming back to us each week because when they come to Intercontinental, they get the  fflavour of everything, especially the Nigerian flavours which are improving day by day,”Raza said.

He said to make the Sunday Brunch even more satisfying for in-house guests and visitors, the hotel is providing champagne.

“Champagne is a sign of celebration. When people come, they get complimentary champagne with the meal. We are partnering Taittinger Champagne, and by tying up with them, we want to give our guests the best of Champagne. When they come in, they are going to have welcome Champagne which is of top notch brand. Like I said we are celebrating, and when families come in to celebrate, what better way to celebrate with a bottle of champagne. The champagne is complimentary, “he said.

On the cost, he said: “We are pricing it keeping competition in mind and the good news is that kids under the age of five eat for free. And during the Sunday Brunch we have one deal or the other up, like during the Father’s Day, fathers would eat 50 per cent off.

Sunday Brunch is one particular meal that we are getting a lot of outside guests. Also in-house guests also like to come and have a good time, but mostly it is the out-side guests. Pricing has never been a problem for them because they really have value for money-music, champagne and wide variety of food. For them, the value is already there”.

One of the chefs, Chef Samson Balogun, spoke more on the Sunday Brunch: “From what we have, the number of people coming that we have been receiving for our Sunday Brunch has been increasing”.

Asked if it was a special, he said it was as if you are having meals from five different regions.

Also there was always the chef’s special which Balogun explained thus: “‘It is a secret recipe. This is what we sit down and create. It is not what every other hotel or someone out there is doing. We sit down and discuss and for example say: ‘ok, this is the rice, how do we make it distinct and tasty. By the time we come out with ideas, let’s add this and this and do it like this, we will come out with special. Every week we have something different.

A few of the strides it made in the last business year are the new bottles of Chelsea Dry Gin, Squadron Dark Rum and Veleta fruit drink which were unveiled and fully integrated into the market with the decision bringing great dividends in the areas of sales and reduction in the risk of counterfeiting Intercontinental Distillers Limited products.

Its Managing Director, Patrick Anegbe, said Lagos has particularly been a fertile ground for the company’s harvests, adding that the firm is proud of its network of highly mobile salesmen and executives based at its various depots at Mushin, Oke-Arin, Ikeja, Ikorodu and Apapa and other places.

He said: “Other brands like DeRok and Action Bitters have also undergone repackaging and we are pleased to announce to you that all our changes have been accepted in the market.”

He added that all its brands in the last year have enjoyed robust above-the-line and below-the-line adverts and marketing campaigns. This is a proof of our commitment to continue and remain the top choice quality drinks.”

He encouraged distributors to boost their sales for better award next year. “It is our expectation therefore, that today’s award will encourage you to invest more in your business and rekindle your drive to grow your business by improving on current performance so you will continue to benefit from our generous yearly rewards for our distributors” he said.

Awards given to distributors were based on the volume of sales they made the previous year. Mrs. Dorothy Anegbe of Ogbohu Enterprise from Lagos zone emerged winner with top Prize winning a Platinum Award of N9.25 million and a 4.5 tonne truck. Others are; Ollytex Nig Ltd  20, who went home with a KVA Mikano Generator and N6.8 million. Third place was Emmaogbata & sons with 6.0 17 million and a 20KVA Mikano Generator. Other prizes include 15KVA Generator, wireless theatre system, lasma Television set and Washing machine.

She said: “I want to say a very big thank you to IDL for this award and on behalf of the other distributors, I say a very big thank you for the cash gifts they have given to us and by the grace of God, we would try to work harder to gain more awards. We are also praying for them that they would grow from strength to strength and would continue to be the number one distillery in Nigeria.”

Mrs. Olatunji Yemisi, a Lagos zone distributor in Ikota said: “I am very happy and grateful to IDL because they have been wonderful people so far and by God’s grace, next year, I would try to perform better so I can be able to collect more awards. With the company’s relentless effort to reward its productive customers, the regional award ceremony was taken to Ibadan and Port Harcourt.

The awards held in Port Harcourt was the last in the series of awards for the 2014 Business year held specifically for the company’s Eastern & Central regions. Comrade Joseph Ogoamaka Ugwoegbu of Merdian Marketing emerged the company’s No 1 Customer. He was rewarded with a cash sum of N11.4million and a 4.5 tonne truck. Speaking on the challenges in the industry, Anegbe said: “Our industry has not been without its challenges as the power situation in our country, continues to affect production costs among other issues.

It is our prayer that the Government finds a permanent solution to this problem.  Also, the instability of the Naira against the Dollar is another factor affecting manufacturing companies in Nigeria especially in the area of equipment procurement.  The manufacturing sector lost millions of dollars to devaluation of the naira. The devaluation and resultant increase in the cost of foreign exchange should directly mean increase in prices of goods but there is a limit to the extent that price increase can be absorbed by the trade.

  • InterContinental Lagos opens in style

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has opened its first hotel in Nigeria and the  company’s first InterContinental hotel in West Africa.

The 358-room InterContinental Lagos is located on Plot 52, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, the Nigerian business and diplomatic hub, home to numerous embassies and multinational companies. Close to Lagos Creek, the 23-storey hotel offers guests stunning panoramic views of the Gulf of Guinea. Lagos is the largest city in the country, as well as one of the biggest and fastest-growing cities in Africa.

The hotel is set to appeal to local residents and international travellers alike with four restaurants and stylish bars on offer. Ekaabo, the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, serves up a blend of Nigerian and international cuisine and overlooks a majestic waterfall, while Milano offers contemporary Italian cuisine. For those after Far Eastern fare, the hotel’s Chinese restaurant, Soho, is the ideal option.

At the hotel’s poolside restaurant, PS/SP, guests can choose from a variety of healthy lunch and dinner choices and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, while seated next to the hotel’s Zen Garden.

For event planners and business travellers, the hotel offers state-of-the-art facilities. Its Grand African Ballroom can seat up to 1,400 people with an additional six other meeting rooms, a boardroom and business facilities. The hotel also features a luxurious health and fitness centre which includes a sauna and steam room, and Club InterContinental.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who was joined by other eminent persons from all walks of life, performed the grand opening of the hotel at a colourful ceremony characterised by glitz and glamour.

Fashola, in his speech, commended the promoters of InterContinental Lagos for their vision, saying the building of the hotel was a welcome development at a time Nigeria was yearning for foreign direct investments to grow the economy. He noted that continuous investment in the local economy was the answer to creating more jobs for the teeming unemployed Nigerians.

“It is clear that there is growth on the African continent. But growth is a cycle as economists will tell you, and if we do nothing with the cycle of opportunity, it will move on. It is here now, but we are dealing with growth without enough jobs. There is no miracle about it. The answer lies in continuous local investments, continuous pushing of the frontiers of commitment, continuous investments at home and emphasis on the possibilities that lie here”, he said.

Fashola, who commended the Milan Group and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) for the multi-billion naira investment in the state, specifically saluted the courage of Mr. Ramesh Valechha for the bold move, even as he assured willing investors of his administration’s commitment to the growth of the tourism and hospitality sector as well as foster an environment that can enable investments thrive.

“The Milan Group and InterContinental Hotels Group did not make this investment because the Lagos State Government went to look for investors. They made this investment because the environment was enabling. I salute the commitment and the belief of the Milan Group in the Lagos and the Nigerian economy.

“And if you want to know how deep that belief is, you need to take a turn to the basement of this building. You will see that persistence and conviction expressed in several metres deep of concrete and steel and it shows you how difficult it was to get this project under way. But they did not give up because they were convinced that this was the place to put their money”, the governor said.

Fashola also enjoined Nigerian entrepreneurs to tap the opportunities created by the current deficit in key sectors such as hotel, road infrastructure and other utilities that could create economic growth, jobs and make life better for the people as he declared InterContinental Lagos as a ‘’life-defining’’ infrastructure. He urged Nigerian professionals and entrepreneurs to continue to be the drivers of more landmark projects of this nature.

Speaking on behalf of the owners of InterContinental Lagos, the Chairman of Milan Group, Mr. Ramesh Valechha, disclosed that the newly opened first luxury five-star hotel in the history of Nigeria has created 650 direct employments and scores of indirect employment in the hotel value chain.

‘‘We note with a high sense of satisfaction that we have created 650 direct employments for some Nigerians and indeed scores of indirect employment for others connected one way or the other to our hotel value chain as suppliers and service providers. This is part of our noble contributions to the economic environment within which our businesses are set,’’ Valechha said.

The chairman disclosed that the architectural design and construction of the 358-room and 23-storey magnificent hotel were executed by Nigerian professionals, while the financing was undertaken by two local banks – Skye and Wema.

He stated that the successful completion of the hotel, despite the challenges associated with projects of this magnitude, underscored the greatness of the vision of the owners and the belief of various people involved in the project.

‘‘Like all large construction projects, we had our share of challenges associated with projects of this magnitude. But members of our team have done their utmost to make certain that we are ready for our opening day! This kind of loyalty has been truly inspiring and makes us proud of the people of this great country and their unbroken spirit in the face of challenges. In spite of these challenges, we have made it, and you are all here to celebrate our success with us’’, he said.

InterContinental Lagos, he added, was purposefully built and reflected the highest international standards while assuring consumers of value for their money. According to Valechha, ‘‘we have, in our own little way introduced some positive narratives that will form the basis for new conversations about Nigeria at the global stage. I am confident of one thing; this iconic structure opened today will form the topic of new positive discourse by International business and leisure tourists who will have cause to visit Nigeria from now on.’’

In his remarks on behalf of Nigerian professionals that worked on the design and construction of the magnificent hotel, the Managing Director of Design Group and the lead architect who designed the building, Arc. Bayo Odunlami, said the complex was a testimonial of the high professionalism of Nigerians. While expressing gratitude to the promoters for their confidence in Nigerians, he said ‘‘this edifice is an outstanding testimonial that Nigerian professionals have come of age‘’. He added that it was also a boost for the country’s perception.

On his part, the Managing Director of Skye Bank, Mr. Kehinde Durosinmi-Etti, commended the resilience of Mr. Valechha and his team for seeing the project through despite the challenges. He said apart from changing the Lagos skyline, InterContinental Lagos was ‘‘a hotel of the future’’ for Nigeria. His Wema Bank counterpart, Mr. Segun Oloketuyi, described the project as ‘‘a landmark and destination hotel’’, noting that it would impact the nation economy in terms of direct employment and several value chain benefits.

Veteran architect, Mr. Robin Johnson, whom Mr. Odunlami acknowledged as his professional trainer and mentor, saluted Mr. Valechha for making his vision to become a reality and expressed joy with the high quality of work done by the local professionals whom he said had helped the owners ‘‘built their dream exactly the way they wanted it.’’

Earlier on, a media interactive session was held by the Milan Group and InterContinental Hotels Group managements during which they spoke on the hotel project and its offerings.
