  • Court sentences Ghanaian to five months in prison for stealing books

    A Karmo Grade I Area Court on Thursday sentenced a Ghanaian, Hillary Rogeis, to five months in prison for stealing three sacks of assorted reading books valued at N200,000.

    The police charged Rogeis and Ohadaka Linus who lives in Wuse Zone ll Abuja, with joint act and theft.

    Rogeis pleaded guilty to stealing but Linus denied committing the alleged offence.

    The judge, Inuwa Maiwada, sentenced Rogeis  with out an option to pay a fine.

    Maiwada also  ordered the deportation of the convict upon completion of his jail term.

    The judge admitted  Linus to bail in the sum of N150, 000, with one surety in like sum after he pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against him.

    Maiwada ordered that the surety must be reasonable, reliable, reside within the court jurisdiction and their addresses must be verified by a court staff.

    He also  said  that the surety must present copies of utility bills and identification cards.

    Maiwada adjourned the case until May 6, for hearing

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that one  Isa, of Karamajiji Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station Abuja, on March 30.

    Ukagha said that the complainant reported that Rogeis and Linus, broke into his store and stole books.

    She said during police investigation two sacks of the books  were recovered from them.

    The prosecutor also alleged that Rogeis was an ex-convict, a notorious criminal.

    Ukagha said that the offence contravened the provisions of  sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Court sentences ex-convict to five months imprisonment for stealing one chicken

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 29-year-old ex-convict, Mubarak Abdullahi, to five months in prison for stealing one chicken.

    The judge, Mr Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option of N10, 000 fine, and warned him to be of good behaviour.

    Abdullahi, who resides at Angwan Hausawa Karmo, had pleaded guilty to three counts of being in possession of a chicken suspected to be stolen, idleness and constituting nuisance.

    The convict pleaded with the court  saying,: “please sir, temper justice with mercy, times are hard, and no work in the country.”

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that one Mohammed Ismailia, a team of vigilante at Idu Gbagji, arrested and took him to the Karmo Police Station on Monday.

    The prosecutor said that the convict has been prosecuted before for stealing a turkey.

    During police investigation, he said that the convict confessed to the crime and all efforts made by the police to take them where he stole the chicken from proved abortive.

    Ukagha said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 319, 406 and 199 of the Penal Code.

  • Court discharges man who stole his own car

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday discharged one Shehu Adamu, docked for stealing his own car from the police station.

    Adamu, who resides at Utako Village, Abuja, and arraigned on a charge of theft, pleaded guilty after admitting to committing the offence.

    He begged the court for leniency.

    “I plead with this court to reduce my punishment for I know I am guilty of all the allegations.’’

    The Judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, after listening to Adamu, discharged him and warned him not to commit the crime again.

    He ordered him to sign a bond to be of good behaviour.

    Maiwada also ordered the police to release the car to the defendant.

    The Prosecuting Counsel, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, had told the court that one Ugochukwu Ogbonna, a Mobile Police Officer attached Utako Police Station, reported the matter at the station.

    “They were at a checkpoint when the officer stopped the man to search his car and discovered that the man had no driver’s licence, and the car was later taken to the police station.

    “The defendant later went to the station and fraudulently took the car without the consent of the police officer that arrested him,” Ukagha said.

    She said that during police investigation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of his actions.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provisions of Section 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Man bags two months imprisonment for stealing groceries

    A Karmo Grade I Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a 36-year- old man, Abdulahi Danjuma to two months imprisonment for breaking into a shop to steal groceries valued N5,000.

    Danjuma of NNPC quarters, was arraigned, tried and convicted after he pleaded guilty to the two- count- charge of house breaking and theft.

    The magistrate, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, who sentenced the convict, however, gave him an option to pay N5,000 fine.

    The prosecutor, Mrs Ukagha Ijeoma, had earlier told the court that one Isreal Abraham and Mohammed Sani of NNPC quarters, Abuja, on December 3, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station.

    Ijeoma alleged that the convict was caught after breaking into the shop of Sani and stole a pack of Vaseline, one roll of cowbell powdered milk and a crate of eggs, all valued N5, 000.

    She added that during police investigation, the roll of cowbell powdered milk was recovered but all efforts to recover the other items proved abortive.

    The prosecution said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 354 and 288 of the Penal Code.

  • Storekeeper bags three months imprisonment for stealing cement

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 32-year-old storekeeper, Julius Dauda, to three months imprisonment for stealing 10 bags of cement.

    Dauda, of no fixed address, was arraigned on a count charge of theft.

    Dauda pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

    “I am sorry for stealing and I am pleading with the court to temper justices with mercy.

    “I promise not to steal again; please sir, forgive me,’’ he pleaded.

    The Judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, however, sentenced Dauda to three months imprisonment with a fine option of N5, 000.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, had told the court that on Dec. 4, the complainant, Sylvanus Ejike, of Idu Industrial Area, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station.

    Ukagha informed the court that the complainant employed Dauda as a storekeeper and security guard in his block industry at Idu Industrial Area, Abuja.

    She said that Dauda stole his employer’s 10 bags of cement and other property valued at N1.5 million.

    The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the convict admitted to have committed the offence.

    Ukagha said that the convict confessed that he sold the cement to an unknown buyer and efforts to recover the property proved abortive.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 289 of the Penal Code.

  • Court sentences man over hacking into employers account

    A Karmo Grade I Area Court, Abuja, on Friday, sentenced a cashier, Ameh Samson, to five months in prison for  hacking into his employer’s First bank current account and transferring N1.57 million to his account.

    The police charged 29-year-old, whose address was not given with theft.

    Samson had pleaded guilty to theft.

    The Magistrate, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave him an option to pay N7, 000 fine.

    The police  prosecutor, Mrs Ukagha Ijeoma, had earlier  told the court that one Aisha Kabir, of No.79  Yaowude street Wuse Zone 6, Abuja,  on Nov. 12, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station.

    Ijeoma alleged that the convict, being the employee of  Kabir, hacked into her First bank account and transferred the N 1.57 million to his access bank account.

    During the police investigation, he said the convict confessed to have transferred the money to his account.

    The prosecution said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 289 of the Penal code.

  • Man docked for stealing cartons of Emzorl Paracetamol

    A 30-year-old man, Francis Omoba , who police accused of stealing 12 cartons of Emzor Paracetamol valued at N242, 400, on Thursday appeared in a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja.

    Omoba, who lives in Karmo village Abuja, was charged with two counts of criminal trespass and theft.

    The prosecutor, Mrs Ukagha Ijeoma, told the court that one Chijioke Collins, a security supervisor attached to manufacturing distribution service, Idu Yard Abuja, reported the matter on Oct 23, at the Life Camp Police Station.

    Ijeoma said that on the same date at about 3 a.m the defendant criminally and dishonestly trespassed into the company through the Company’s parameter fence and stole 12 cartons of Emzor paracetamol valued N242, 400.

    The prosecuting counsel, told the court that in the process Omoba was arrested and the said paracetamol were recovered from him.

    Ijeoma said that during police investigation, Omoba could not give a satisfactory account of himself.

    He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    Omoba, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, admitted him to bail in the sum of N250, 000, with one surety in like sum.

    Maiwada adjourned the case until Jan. 17 for hearing.

  • Man jailed three months for stealing from police officer

     A Karmo Grade I Area Court  in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced one Stephen Musa to three months’ imprisonment for stealing  a police officer ‘s television set, phones and laptops valued at N 1.5 million.

    Magistrate Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N11,000.

    Musa,  who has no fixed address,  was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on  house breaking, theft and mischief to which he pleaded guilty.

    Earlier, the prosecutor counsel, Mrs Ijeoma  Ukagha, told the court that the convict, on Sept. 25, at 11:45 p.m., broke into the house of ASP Musa Maina but was arrested.

    Ukagha said that during police investigation, the convict confessed that he broke into the same house in August and made away with LG television, phones and laptops.

    She added that  Musa also confessed to have stolen four generators and  buckets.

    She also said that the convict confessed that he had been arrested for stealing.

    The offences contravene the provisions of Section 346, 287 and 327 of the Penal Code.

  • Court jails man four months for stealing cell phone

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced one 37-year-old Chukwu Ndukwu to four months’ imprisonment for stealing a N60,000 phone.

    The Judge, Mr Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convict an option of N7,000 fine, warning him to desist from bad behaviour.

    The convict had admitted committing the offence, and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    He blamed the stealing on the Devil.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that Mr Suleiman Halilu of Garki 2, Abuja, reported the case at the Utako Police Station, Abuja, on October 4.

    Ukagha said that the convict and two others at large snatched Halilu’s Infinix Hot Note 6 from him when he stopped his car to rectify a fault.

    The prosecutor said that the police recovered the phone from the convict during an investigation.

  • Pastor remanded for criminal breach of trust, cheating

    A Karmo Grade I Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, ordered the remand of a 27-year-old Pastor, Emmanuel Ukaegbu, in prison arraigned for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The judge, Inuwa Maiwada, gave the order after Ukaegbu of Abia State, pleaded guilty to a two-count charge leveled against him.

    Maiwada adjourned the case until June 25, for sentencing.

    The prosecutor, Ifeoma Ukagha, told the court that one pastor Samuel Oguche, on behalf of the general overseer of Omega Power Ministry Abuja, reported the matter at the Gwagwa Police Station Abuja, on June 2.

    Ukagha said the complainant alleged that sometimes in February 2018, the church entrusted Ukaegbu with electronic and household equipment meant for the Church, which he diverted.

    Ukagha said that Ukaegbu made away with tiger generator valued N15, 000, key board valued N70, 000, gas cylinder valued N6, 000 and a standing fan value yet unknown.

    He said all effort made by the police to trace and recover the items proved abortive.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
