Pantami hails Governor Yahaya on honorary doctorate, Gombe’s Tsangaya reforms

Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has congratulated Gombe Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on his Honorary Doctoral Degree conferred by Lincoln University College, Malaysia.

Pantami said the honour reflects measurable achievements recorded under Yahaya’s administration, particularly in the education and health sectors, which he noted are increasingly being viewed as reference points for reform across the region.

He highlighted the recruitment of 1,000 teachers to address manpower gaps, improvements in students’ performance in WAEC examinations in recent years, and the construction of modern school facilities in rural and underserved communities.

Drawing from his background in the Tsangaya system, Pantami hailed Gombe’s Almajiri Tsangaya programme under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) initiative, which has put many thousands of out-of-school children into learning environments.

The establishment of modernised Tsangaya Mega Schools across all 11 local government areas stands out as an inclusive reform that harmonises traditional Islamic education with modern learning systems, Pantami added.

He also commended the construction of a 1,000-capacity Gombe State School of Nursing and Midwifery and the rehabilitation of 114 Primary Healthcare Centres—one in each ward—to strengthen the healthcare workforce and expand access to basic medical services.

The former minister noted that the Governor’s approach demonstrates the importance of synergy between government, academia, and industry in building a future-ready society.

“Education remains the most reliable instrument for bridging gaps,” Pantami stated, offering prayers for continued wisdom and guidance for Governor Yahaya, who holds the traditional titles of Dan Majen Gombe and Dan Amanan Daular Usmaniyya.

  • Who succeeds Inuwa Yahaya?

    Who succeeds Inuwa Yahaya?

    • By Abdulrahman Musa

As Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State is about to wind down his second tenure in office, conversations have already begun to heat up around who should succeed him. Among political stakeholders, media circles, and grassroots mobilisers, the question is no longer if but who will wear the crown come 2027.

Governor Yahaya himself hasn’t been coy about the conversations, and indeed, his intentions with respect to who succeeds him. He has made it clear that he is already steering the process to ensure a worthy successor emerges — someone who shares his development philosophy and can continue his governance blueprint. In his words, the “car is already in motion, my hands are on the steering, my legs are on the brakes,” and I will make sure we land safely by getting the right and ideal successor. But with a growing list of aspirants, political heavyweights, and ambitious contenders lining up, the process may not be as straightforward as the governor hopes.

Now, let me say this upfront that I have never been comfortable with political godfatherism. I believe it to be a dangerous tradition that often sidelines the will of the people and imposes leaders based on loyalty to a single person rather than the needs of the wider public. However, I am also not blind to the reality of Nigerian politics. There’s a fine line between godfatherism and legacy protection. The former chokes democracy, but the latter — when done with the interest of continuity and stability in mind — can be beneficial. And this, I believe, is the lens through which we should assess Governor Yahaya’s current political moves.

One doesn’t need to look far to see the dangers of a poorly managed succession. Take Rivers State as a case in point. The breakdown of the political alliance between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor and former political benefactor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has thrown the state into months of instability, leading to the declaration of a six-month state of emergency. This kind of crisis is precisely what Gombe State must avoid.

On the flip side, we also have examples of states where successors have maintained a productive and respectful relationship with their benefactors, leading to political harmony and steady development. Lagos State is perhaps the most textbook case of such a model. Since former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now Nigeria’s President, initiated a robust succession plan for Lagos, the state has experienced continuous development.

Although many governors have contributed to this modern Lagos, the enduring legacy of good leadership is often traced back to Tinubu’s foresight. Babatunde Raji Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode, and Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu have all added their touch, but the credit still flows upward — and deservedly so — to the architect of the continuity.

Beyond Lagos, similar models exist in Kogi, Kano, and Borno States. Governors like Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State, Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, and Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State are building on the legacies of their predecessors with an impressive blend of loyalty and performance.

Governor Zulum, for instance, recently came into the limelight not for policy failure or to project his own interests, but for standing firmly behind Vice President Kashim Shettima, his predecessor, in the face of party pressures that sought to isolate Shettima during an endorsement fray for President Tinubu by the North-East caucus of the APC. Zulum made sure to unite the North-East region to demand that any endorsement for President Tinubu must include Vice President Kashim Shettima. It was a show of uncommon loyalty and clarity of purpose. Olden and overambitious politicians cannot go this length to protect the interests of their successors.

In Kogi State, while many disagreed with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his unwavering loyalty to former Governor Yahaya Bello, especially during Bello’s controversial tussle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the optics still send a clear message: Ododo understands the value of trust and allegiance in Nigerian political ecosystems.

Similarly, in Kano, when some campaigners tried to pit Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf against his political godfather, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, through the “ Abba Tsaya da kafar ka” (Abba stand on your legs) movement, Yusuf did not hesitate to dismiss the campaign outrightly. He warned members of his administration to steer clear of such divisive antics, making it clear that his loyalty to Kwankwaso was not up for negotiation.

A closer look at the lives of these three loyal governors before they were elected reveals a most exemplary pattern. Zulum, Ododo, and Yusuf were not desperate to become governors when they were anointed. Their rise to power was, therefore, not based on loud political ambition or desperation. They were, in fact, dark horses — underdogs who quietly earned the respect and trust of their mentors and the public alike. And today, their respective states are the better for it.

Which brings us back home to Gombe. While Governor Inuwa Yahaya holds the key to the 2027 puzzle, the choice of who will carry the baton matters more than ever. The state needs a stabilising figure. Someone loyal, competent, widely accepted, and free of political baggage. And in that light, one name consistently rises to the top — Engr. Aliyu Muhammad Kombat.

Engr. Kombat is not just another politician. He is a calm, cerebral, and deeply respected figure in Gombe politics. Though not flashy or loud, his record of loyalty, capacity, and people-oriented leadership has won him admirers across party lines. Even more impressive is his approach to succession politics. Unlike others who are openly jostling and lobbying for endorsements, Kombat has remained composed, distant, and very humble.

It is even on record that Engineer Kombat has called on his supporters to direct their loyalty and political energy towards Governor Inuwa Yahaya, describing the Governor as the leader whose policies he respects and supports. He went further to list some of the major projects and achievements of the governor and the need to support him to complete the ongoing ones. That kind of humility and strategic alignment is rare in today’s politics. He is not desperately clamouring for power, and perhaps that is why many consider him worthy of it.

Among stakeholders, Kombat is increasingly being described as Governor Yahaya’s Ododo Pro Max — a premium successor model, if you like. And it’s not just about loyalty. Kombat also ticks every box in terms of capacity, empathy, grassroots connection, and a clear grasp of governance issues in Gombe State. He understands Governor Yahaya’s vision and has worked in support of it rather than in competition with it.

More importantly, he is popular among the youth — a critical bloc that will no doubt shape the outcome of the 2027 elections. His appeal to the younger demographic is organic, driven by years of quiet service, mentorship, philanthropy, and visibility at community levels.

As the race toward 2027 heats up, Governor Inuwa Yahaya must now make a choice that will either protect or imperil his legacy. He must choose between ambition and stability, noise and competence, entitlement and loyalty.

Gombe cannot afford political uncertainty. The gains recorded in the last eight years — in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security — must not be reversed by handing over to a reckless and disloyal successor. And while it’s not our job to pick a candidate for the governor, it is important that we call attention to what’s obvious: Engr. Aliyu Kombat represents the kind of successor every state hopes for.

So, as Gombe, like many states with governors on the last leg of their tenures, stands at the crossroads, Governor Yahaya must ask himself: Will I leave behind a Zulum, an Ododo, or a Fubara? More importantly, will my legacy be lost in the mire of a successor-predecessor dogfight? The choice, and the legacy that follows, is Inuwa’s to make.

  • Inuwa Yahaya: Celebrating a great leader at 63

Inuwa Yahaya: Celebrating a great leader at 63

    By Ismaila Uba Misilli

Greatness is not noisy, this I learnt from my principal, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON the Governor of Gombe State, a man of very modest mien, magnificent in achievements and yet without an iota of braggadocio.

Today, October, 9, as usual, many friends,  associates and well- wishers will be wishing His Excellency a happy birthday. But not many know the deposits of virtues embedded in my Principal. Let me seize the occasion of your birthday, Your Excellency, to share the joy of working with an enigmatic mentor and teacher like you. No one will ever remain a mediocre again in life, after sharing times and moments with you.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya embodies a rare combination of intellect, influence and humility- so humble in demeanor, disciplined with maturity, and outstanding in achievements.

Despite holding the most powerful office in the state, he maintains an air of simplicity and modesty that is both refreshing and admirable. When you step into His Excellency’s personal residence, you would never guess that it belongs to a sitting governor. There are no tell-tale signs of power—no flags, no portraits, and no insignia to display his position. It’s a home that could belong to any successful individual, unassuming yet comfortable. Even more telling is the absence of any ostentatious display of wealth. In a country where political leaders are often associated with lavish lifestyles and fleets of luxury cars, Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s residence stands in contrast, his children too.

This humble approach to life extends to his leadership style. The Dan Majen Gombe doesn’t need to wear the trappings of power to assert his authority. His influence is felt through his actions, not his surroundings. His leadership is rooted in service, accessibility, and a profound sense of responsibility to his people, making him a rare breed among leaders today.

Working with Governor Inuwa Yahaya means that there’s no room for complacency. His sharp focus on the task at hand drives everyone involved to deliver at their best. His attention is so attuned to the work that you often feel his presence even when he’s not physically around. Under his leadership, there’s a silent but powerful expectation of efficiency, as his commitment leaves no space for sloppiness or half-hearted efforts.

His calm and composed nature makes him a leader who doesn’t rely on an overwhelming presence to command respect. He speaks sparingly, but when he does, every word is deliberate, clear, and loaded with purpose. His ability to articulate his thoughts with precision ensures that you understand exactly what he expects without any ambiguity. His commitment to respecting time and schedules sets him apart as a leader who values both his time and the time of others.

When it comes to core governance matters, Inuwa Yahaya has no tolerance for subpar results. He becomes an architect of precision, carefully scrutinizing every aspect. He takes you to the drawing board, leading the process from the foundation to the finish, bringing his team together for thorough deliberation. If a project doesn’t offer tangible benefits to significantly improve people’s lives, it won’t gain his support. You’d better come well-prepared with thoughtful answers, as his questions will push you to think far beyond your usual scope.

With this kind of mindset, you will not find a government appointee in Gombe with a tabula rasa head. When you see your Governor working extra hours to achieve his targets, you cannot but be up and doing on a daily basis. This attitude infused in me and many other state appointees has redefined the development landscape of Gombe state, the Jewel in the Savannah.

The remarkable result, posted by Gombe state which is fast becoming first in many development indices, is the brainchild of a man of vision and unmatched courage. That Gombe State is first in the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria today, best in universal health coverage and most IT compliant State, best in socio-economic development index, is an attestation to the special qualities and disciplined lifestyle Governor Inuwa yahaha has brought to bear on the running of state affairs.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s fearless approach to leadership, as reflected in his mantra “Ko Gezau,” truly highlights his commitment to making difficult but necessary decisions for the well-being of his people. His steady resolve is a mark of strong leadership, always prioritizing progress and the greater good. It’s inspiring to see how his decisiveness has shaped his governance.

He is prudent to a fault, never indulging in unnecessary extravagance on unproductive ventures; every kobo is accounted for. His background in business and accounting must be the reason for the strict level of accountability seen in Gombe State. Inuwa has instilled in us the importance of managing scarce resources efficiently to achieve maximum results.

Every action and decision under his administration follows strict adherence to established procedures and regulations. His leadership has seen an unprecedented number of Executive Council Meetings, ensuring that key decisions are made transparently and collectively. Cabinet members are actively involved in the decision-making process, fostering a sense of inclusivity within the government.

As a media aide, the Governor has shown me that any task worth doing must be done well.  From my principal, I’ve learned that a good leader is always teaching and guiding his team. He continuously finds ways to help you succeed. No matter how low your confidence might be when you join Inuwa’s team, you’ll soon stand taller, filled with a sense of self-belief and a ‘can do’ spirit.

It’s great to see how Governor Inuwa’s leadership has shaped my approach to work, especially as regards thoroughness, accountability, and continuous learning. His ability to mentor and elevate those around him seems to have had a profound impact on my professional growth, especially in the demanding field of writing and media management. This is a clear indication of how a good leader inspires confidence and brings out the best in their team!

Care personified, the Dan Majen Gombe is not a slave driver who wants you to work all your life away for him to take the shine. Often times, when you are with him he will ask you to call your wife and children and he will greet them and thank them for giving him a gift of their husband and father. With this attitude, your family will always show concern and understanding for you even when duty calls and they don’t see you for days or weeks.

Inuwa embodies a transformative spirit, with a remarkable drive to elevate situations from poor to excellent. Many of the policies formulated and implemented in Gombe today stem from his mindset of transformation. His commitment to inclusive development spans all areas, from infrastructure to social services, ensuring that every corner of the state benefits from government programmes and projects aimed at enhancing the lives of the citizens.

Take a look at his road projects especially, the network 11-100. He imagines what Gombe will look like when every of the 11 local governments have at least a hundred kilometers of road with each one connected to another. Pronto! He has opened up the state for ease of movement of goods, people and services. The results are astonishing.

Another mind blowing output of industrialization of his state is the 1000 hectares sprawling Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park located in Dadinkowa. This Park will have every industry situated in one location with its attendant economies of scale for every business enterprise. The park boasts of already tarred roads, light and water in place. This park will be a wow factor for the economy of the state in years to come.

Inuwa yahaya has just returned from his investment mission which took him earlier to Morocco, then to China and finally the United States of America. Gombe has a great gain from these business drives.

The Gombe State Geographic Information System (GOGIS) is yet another success story of Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration. It has greatly improved land administration by enhancing data management and ensuring transparency, leading to improved revenue generation. GOGIS was recently rated the best in digital compliance, reflecting its effectiveness and commitment to modernizing land governance in the state.

Not relegating health issues, Gombe State under Inuwa Yahaha has  delivered three state-of-the-art specialist hospitals in each of the three senatorial zones in the state, in addition to construction or revitalization of PHCs across the 114 wards. Gohealth, the state health contributory scheme is so successful that the National Health Insurance Scheme sends other states to come and learn from the Gombe state template.

His educational policies are geared towards producing great results. He declared state of emergency on education immediately he got the mandate of leadership, moved the academic success ratio for SSCE examination from about 22% to over 75% and equally returned almost half a million out of school children back to class with great improvements in the condition of learning, modern classrooms and well-motivated teachers.

In collaboration with his colleagues at the Northern States Governors’ Forum, being the chairman, they have turned their attention to the age long Almajiri phenomenon. Inuwa hates failure. He is sure to post remarkable results in this task as well, as being done in Gombe.

A man of great compassion for the poor and the lowly, there’s no time the masses are ever neglected in his policies and programmes. He will always put them in the scheme of things. There have been many empowerment programmes as well as welfare packages for them since his leadership of the state.

Indeed, calling my Principal an all-rounder would be hitting the bull’s eye. A deeply God-fearing man, he is known for his respect for both traditional rulers and religious leaders alike. Governor Inuwa Yahaya holds a special place in my heart in many ways — as a father, brother,  teacher, leader, and exemplary mentor.

On this special occasion of your 63rd birthday, I join countless others in celebrating the blessings Allah has bestowed upon you. I wish you sound health and continuous success as you rise to even greater heights in leadership and service to our fatherland and humanity.

Gombe’s transformative journey andInuwa’s strategic engagements in Abuja

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, recently had a series of strategic engagements in Abuja, demonstrating his commitment to driving economic growth and propelling Gombe State into a new era of development.

These proactive efforts underscore his resolve to prioritising the interests of Gombe above all else, cementing his position as an exemplary leader focused on progress and advancement of his state.

One of the key discussions involved a high-level meeting with the management of the Raw Materials, Research and Development Council (RMRDC) led by the Director-General/CEO, Professor Hussaini Ibrahim.

The strategic session aimed to explore and forge collaborative opportunities between the RMRDC, the Gombe State government, and Michigan State University (MSU) United States of America with the objective to harness Gombe’s vast raw material resources, specifically by bolstering projects such as fortifying the Dairy value chain and implementing Solar/Renewable energy-powered fish drying technologies in rural communities.

During the meeting, Governor Yahaya highlighted Gombe State’s conducive business environment, citing its Ease of Doing Business status, central location, peaceful nature and abundance of raw materials as attractive factors for potential investments and partnerships.

The governor reiterated the state’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for collaborations that will drive industrial growth, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the socio-economic development of Gombe State.

He emphasised the state’s openness to welcome research and development initiatives while affirming its readiness to facilitate the establishment of necessary infrastructure and provide support for capacity building programmes aimed at enhancing the skills of stakeholders in identified sectors.

The discussions concluded with a mutual commitment from both parties to further explore and advance the collaborations proposed by the RMRDC with the aim to create tangible socio-economic impacts through innovative projects and partnerships in Gombe State.

Another significant engagement saw Governor Yahaya advocating for comprehensive road infrastructure development during discussions with the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi.

Stressing the importance of robust road networks in fostering socio-economic progress, the governor urged for Federal Government intervention to address the existing road infrastructure challenges in Gombe State and the wider Northeast region.

The governor of Gombe State, who is also the Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) pleaded for comprehensive federal road networks in Gombe State and all six states of northeastern Nigeria.

The governor believes providing comprehensive federal road coverage is critical to the socio-economic growth and development of the Northeast, calling the federal government to construct roads in various trunk A routes across the subregion that have made movement of goods and services difficult over the years.

In response, Engr. Umahi assured the governor that President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda will address road deficits in the subregion.

He shared his words of encouragement with the governor and commended him for his passion to make a great difference in his state.

The minister’s positive response further reinforced the potential collaboration between the states and federal government in tackling these crucial challenges.

Also, the governor’s visit to the headquarters of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) echoed his determination to advancing digital literacy and E-governance initiatives in Gombe.

He is exploring potential areas of partnership with NITDA with the aim of equipping youths and women in the state with essential digital skills and advancing e- governance to enhance efficiency and productivity.

The meeting was particularly significant as Gombe State was recently recognised by NITDA as the ‘Most Digitally Compliant State’ in Nigeria.

Gombe State, under the leadership of Governor Yahaya, has set an ambitious goal to automate all government operations to align with broader national efforts towards a more digitally inclined governance structure.

Gombe, known for its skilled manpower, proudly holds the position of the ‘Best State in Ease of Doing Business’ in Nigeria. The collaboration with NITDA will further amplify this reputation and facilitate the integration of cutting-edge technology into various sectors in order to ensure that Gombe remains at the forefront of digital transformation in the country.

Also in Abuja, Governor Yahaya participated in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum meeting where the states chief executives had fruitful discourse with various development partners across diverse sectors with the Gombe governor leveraging the opportunities for his state’s holistic advancement.

Governor Yahaya’s purposeful engagements in Abuja exemplify a leader determined to unlock Gombe’s potential and address critical developmental challenges in its transformative journey towards greatness.

His proactive pursuit of partnerships, focus on infrastructural development, commitment to digital transformation, and proactive engagement with stakeholders reflect a visionary leadership aimed at positioning Gombe at the forefront of progress and development in Nigeria.
