  • APC chairmanship: Ebri lauded for stepping down for Oshiomole

A former governorship candidate of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) in Cross River State, Mr. Goddie Akpama, has lauded ex-governor of the state, Dr Clement Ebri, for voluntarily stepping down for Comrade Adams Oshiomole, for the position of National Chairman in the recently concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention.

Akpama, now a member of the APC, said Ebri showed exemplary leadership by conceding to the former Edo State governor.

He told reporters in Calabar that by sacrificing his personal aspiration, Ebri had demonstrated that the interest of the party was greater than the personal interest of any individual member of the party.

“What His Excellency did by stepping down was very exemplary. Despite the fact that he had massive support from delegates across the country, he sacrificed his interest for the greater interest of the APC, and that singular action amounted to the success of the National Convention last Saturday.

“His action and stance is responsible for the complete unity within the fabric of the APC at the national level. I advise that henceforth, politicians in the states and across the country should emulated his example of self sacrifice, and put it into practice,” Akpama said.

Akpama who was also a former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) said he was elated that Ebri displayed his leadership quality by leading delegates from Cross River State to a successful convention, thereby, establishing himself as a true and natural leader of the APC in the state.

“From the formation of the party, and even before the convention the Cross River State chapter of the APC was in crisis, and lacked direction, an indication that the party lacked a central figure that had put himself forward for members to rally round for the success of the party. I am happy, and I am confident most members of the party are happy that Ebri put himself forward to played the much needed leadership role, which was hitherto absent. His Excellency, Ebri, from all we have seen has distinguished himself as the leader of the APC in the state”, the former governorship candidate said.

He also stated that by joining the race, Ebri demonstrated that Cross River State was no longer in the backwaters of Nigerian politics and can never be taken for granted any longer.

He also congratulated Oshiomole on his emergence as National Chairman.

  • Second Term: Buhari has right to contest – APGA, IPAC

National Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr Victor Oye, said President Muhammadu Buhari was qualified to present himself for re-election.

Oye, in a statement in Awka on Monday said as a Nigerian, Buhari had the constitutional right to seek another term in office.

“He is qualified, so, we have no problem with his declaration to run for second term.”

Similarly, Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Anambra, Chief Bartho Igwedibia, said it was inalienable right of Buhari to seek re-election if he wished.

Igwedibia said only the Nigerian masses had the final say on who would preside over their affair.

He called for free and credible elections that would yield outcome reflecting the wishes of the people.

“The Constitution of Nigeria guarantees two terms for all elected political office holders; so Buhari is qualified to enjoy that right.

“There is nothing wrong with his declaration and there is nothing special about it, too.

“Nigerians are the people that have the ultimate say on who will lead them; every person, including myself, can declare but the people will speak with their votes.

“Nobody should stop anybody; my take is that voter awareness should be intensified and people should get their Permanent Voter Cards in order to speak with their votes.

“All we want is free and fair election where people can vote and their votes should count,” he said.

An aspirant in the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State, Sen. Ayo Arise, said it was in the interest of Nigerians for Buhari to re-contest in 2019.

Arise stated this while speaking with newsmen after picking his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the election, at the APC National Secretariat, Abuja.

The former lawmaker said that Nigerians would not regret the decision if they decided to re-elect Buhari in 2019.

He noted that though the Buhari government had been faced with some challenges, it needed more than one term in office to truly develop the country.

´´Apart from governance being a continuum, I believe that if I want to tar a road between here and Lagos, then the life of a regime might not be able to finish it,´´ he said.

He, however, said that the administration had achieved a lot in fighting corruption, ensuring security of lives and properties and infrastructural development.

Arise maintained that Nigerians should continue to support Buhari for as long as possible “and as long as he is physically fit’’. (NAN)

  • INEC partners stakeholders for transparent, credible elections in 2019

INEC partners stakeholders for transparent, credible elections in 2019

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will partner stakeholders, including media, civil society groups and the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) for transparent and credible elections in 2019.

Prof. Francis Ezeonu, the INEC Resident Commissioner ( REC ) in Imo, made the promise at his maiden meeting with State Inter-Agency Committee and Voter Education Publicity Committee in Owerri on Friday.

Ezeonu said the meeting was aimed at enlightening and updating the stakeholders on the commission’s preparations and strategies for successful elections.

According to him, the voter registration exercise is already ongoing.

He said the exercise would stop 120 days to elections to enable the commission effectively distribute the voter cards.

Ezeonu said that there were INEC offices in all the local government areas of the state.

This, he said, was to enable people, who were now up to 18 and those who had lost their cards or relocated, to register.

The REC said that initially people exhibited apathy to the  registration, but said that the situation had improved from 1,500 persons who registered daily to 7, 000.

He said the commission had indentified nine internal and three external electoral risk factors in the state and was working toward tackling them.

Ezeonu said the commission would soon tour local government areas in Imo to interact with stakeholders – traditional rulers, town unions, women and youth leaders in the various communities.

He said that some landmark features on pooling units in the state had disappeared.

Ezeonu said the commission would not create or relocate polling units located in public places.

He said that the commission was establishing Residential Area Centres (RAC) to ensure materials reached the polling booths on time.

Ezeonu advised political parties to have credible agents.

The Reporter reports that some stakeholders urged INEC to ensure security of lives during elections as well as timely arrival of officials and materials at the centres.

The State Director of NYSC, Mrs Josephine Bakare, decried attacks on corps members in past elections and called for measures to guard against such incident in future.

Stakeholders at the meeting included representatives of media in the state, National Orientation Agency and NYSC.

  • IPAC to Nigerians: vote credible candidates

IPAC to Nigerians: vote credible candidates

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has urged Nigerians to vote for only credible candidates in the 2019 elections.

Its Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Malam Shakirudeen Olofin, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos yesterday.

He urged the citizens to de-emphasise political affiliations and vote for only candidates who would move the country forward.

“As the 2019 elections approach, we urge Nigerians to vote candidates who will deliver good governance regardless of party affiliations.

“The credibility of candidates and the ability to deliver should be the major considerations, and not whether candidates belong to popular parties or not.

“We are all witnesses to how major parties give us beautiful manifestoes and dump them as soon as they get to power.

“Also, there are good candidates who cannot emerge through the poor internal democracy in some of the popular parties.

“The only way to get such good candidates in power is for the electorate not to look at the party they belong but vote them according to their credentials and what they can offer,” he said.

2019: IPAC beg Nigerians to vote credible candidates

The Inter-Party Advisory Council ( IPAC ) has urged Nigerians to vote for only credible candidates in the 2019 elections.

The Lagos State Publicity Secretary of IPAC, Malam Shakirudeen Olofin, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

“The only way to get such good candidates in power is for the electorate not to look at the party they belong but vote them according to their credentials and what they can offer,” he advised.

Olofin also urged citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) since the cards would be their power to choose their leaders.

He described the recent killings in Benue and some other states as unfortunate, and urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to end the killings.

The publicity secretary said that he was neither for nor against creation of cattle colonies to tackle farmers/herdsmen clash.

“I am not for or against it. I learnt 16 states have signified interest to give land for colonies.

“If they think that will solve the problem, they can go ahead. What is important is that loss of lives to herdsmen must stop,” he said.

  • 2019: IPAC seeks early release of elections timetable

The Lagos State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Saturday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure early release of the 2019 general election timetable.

The state Chairman of IPAC, Mr. Kola Ajayi, made the call in a chat with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said early release of the time-table would help INEC, the political parties and candidates to be properly guided and prepared ahead of the election proper.

Ajayi said though the electoral body had earlier announced the dates for presidential and governorship elections, there was the need for early release of the full time table for better planning and results.

“There is need for INEC to release the full timetable for the general elections for better planning and results.

“Yes, they have already released the date for the presidential and other elections, the parties are still waiting when to have primaries and when campaigns begin, end and all that.

“The early release will help everyone to start off early and better.

“I want to believe INEC is working on that and it will be released soon,” he said.

Ajayi urged INEC to build on its achievements in the 2015 election and deliver a credible and peaceful poll in 2019.

He said anything short of peaceful and credible polls would not be healthy for the nation’s democracy.

Ajayi identified voter apathy as a major challenge in the country‘s democratic experience.

He urged the stakeholders to address the problem.

  • 2019: INEC to partner political parties for credible elections

2019: INEC to partner political parties for credible elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) says it will partnership political parties and other stakeholders in Ebonyi to ensure that the state records credible election in 2019.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner ( REC ) in the state, Prof. Godswill Obioma, stated this while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Abakaliki on the outcome of a meeting between the commission and Inter Party Advisory Council ( IPAC ).

He said that the collaboration would raise the capacity and awareness of political parties’ members, equip them with knowledge of the electoral process.

Obioma said that the synergy would also enhance understanding of provisions of the nation’s Constitution and the 2010 Electoral Act as amended.

“Our focus, our commitment is on 2019 general elections and the desire to get things done right before and during the elections.

“This is a special IPAC meeting and the aim is to achieve two results,’’ he said.

According to him, it is to raise capacity ahead of 2019 in terms of equipping members with knowledge of IPAC and the electoral umpire with provisions of the Electoral Act.

Obioma said that it was also to sensitize political parties on the need to adhere to provisions of the Act.

“The meeting also highlighted the legal implications of violating the provisions of the Electoral Law and the need for political parties to conduct their activities within the ambits of the law.

“It is through a strategic partnership with the political parties and key stakeholders that our aim of having credible 2019 elections in the state can be achieved,” Obioma said.

He said that IPAC was set up within the structures of INEC to ensure inclusiveness in policy, transparency and probity in election process.

He pointed out that regular meetings were held to address issues that would benefit the members and electorate.
“IPAC is composed of all the registered political parties and meets with INEC from time to time.

“We chart a way forward, look at challenges, create strategies to combat the challenges and of course, make strategic plans in terms of sensitisation and other issues.

“As I have pointed out earlier, today’s meeting is a special one which was convened to address a particular issue.

“The issue is the provision of 2010 Electoral Law (As amended) with particular reference to section 92 (A) and (B) which deals on campaign.

“The essence is to alert political parties of the provisions of that Act stipulating the guidelines, time limit, when to start campaigns and when to stop.

“They will know what constitutes a campaign and implications of contravening the provisions of the electoral Act,” the REC said.

He disclosed that the meeting deliberated on the need for violence-free polls in the state, saying that election was not a do-or-die affair.

He said that political parties were reminded to caution members, candidates and their supporters to limit their actions within the provisions of the law and avoid acts that could trigger election violence.

“Election is not a do-or-die affair and we were able to highlight the issue in the meeting and this is why we are calling for strategic partnership to help build and cement our relationship with political parties.

“We encourage political parties and players to abide by the provisions of the Act to abide by guidelines and also to do all it takes to ensure that elections are credible, fair and free, and that people’s votes count,” Obioma added.

He said that INEC remained an unbiased electoral umpire committed to the discharge of its statutory mandate of conducting impartial and credible elections.

“We in INEC want to assure the public that we are unbiased umpires; we shall do our job, we will carry out our work taking into account our statutory responsibility as provided for in the Act.

“We will not add a vote that doesn’t count nor are we going to subtract a vote that counts.

“We are appealing for cooperation so that at the end of the day, everybody would have seen that we have done the job, people will have been happy to see that their votes have counted.”

Earlier in a paper presentation, Mrs Tonia Ndu, Head of Legal Unit of INEC in the state, urged political parties to desist from embarking on early campaigns.

She advised the parties and candidates to adhere strictly to provisions of the Electoral Laws and comply with INEC’s guidelines in carrying out political activities, especially campaigns.

Ndu said that political campaigns should only begin upon release of timeline for political activities by INEC, adding that it would constitute electoral offence to indulge in political activities outside INEC’s approved time-table.

“Political parties must commence political campaigns upon INEC release of timeline, which must be 90 days to the election and must end 24 hours to the poll.

“Any political party found engaging in political campaigns when INEC has not released time-table for political activities, on conviction, is liable to a fine of N500, 000.

“INEC frowns at politicians and political parties kick-starting political campaigns when it has not given such approval,” Ndu said.
On his part, Chairman of IPAC in the state, Mr Edward Constance, pledged support and commitment of the commission to credible poll in 2019, assuring that IPAC would always partner INEC to create virile electoral environment.

Constance, who is also Chairman of United People’s Party (UPP) in Ebonyi, expressed optimism on the ability of INEC to conduct credible elections in the state in 2019.

He said “we have assured the commission that we will support, cooperate as well as partner it to ensure free, fair and credible 2019 general elections.

“The meeting was interactive and afforded members of the council opportunity to express views and ask questions on matters of electoral importance.

“We have also assured the commission that we are not going to engage in early campaigns, and that we will confine political activities in our respective parties within the provisions of the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines.”

The Inter-Party Advisory Council ( IPAC ) on Monday expressed satisfaction at the conduct of Saturday’s governorship poll in Anambra.

Chief Perry Opara, the National Secretary-General of IPAC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the election was free, fair and credible.

He hailed INEC for a job well done, adding that political parties that participated in the poll played by the rules.

According to him, INEC has demonstrated again that it could conduct credible and conclusive elections.

NAN reports that incumbent Gov.Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance was re-elected.

Obiano secured 234,074 of the 457,311 valid votes to defeat Dr Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 98,752 and Mr Oseloka Obaze of the Peoples Democratic Party who polled 70,293 votes.

Opara said: “I congratulate INEC. I also congratulate Gov. Obiano on his re-election as well as congratulate all those who congratulated him (Obiano) for their spirits of sportsmanship.

“There was peace and tranquility in the state throughout the exercise,’’ he told NAN.

He called on INEC, political parties and aspirants to ensure more voter education to minimise voter apathy in future elections.

He, however, advised that contestants dissatisfied with the election should seek redress in the courts.

  • IPAC south-east commiserates with Tinubu over son’s death

The chairman of South East Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Prince Emeka Okafor, has, on behalf of the council, commiserated with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, over the death of his son, Jide.

Okafor, in a condolence message sent to The Nation in Umuahia, described the death of Jide as a great loss to his father in particular and the country in general as it is coming at the time the country is clamouring for youths to take over the mantle of leadership.

“Death is a debt every mortal have to pay, but it becomes unbearable when a young and promising star like Jide, the first son of our icon, Asiwaju, is lost at his prime. The sad side of the death of Jide is that it is coming at the time the country needed his presence most through contributing his quota in the development of his state in particular and country in general,” the message read in part.

  • LASIEC partners IPAC to end political violence

Worried by the violence arising from the conduct of party primaries ahead the July 22, council polls, the Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd), has appealed to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) to assist the commission to end the violence.

She made the appeal during a meeting held by the commission with members of the executive of IPAC at the Commission’s Yaba, Lagos office.

The LASIEC chief said the violence was capable of negatively impacting on the elections if the situation was not quickly checked, adding that a LASIEC official was injured during one of the fracas.

She promised to beef up security at its headquarters to prevent political thugs from invading it.

The commission, she said, could not interfere in the conduct of primaries of political parties because the law does not empower it to do so.

IPAC Chairman Mr. Kola Ajayi blamed the violence on lack of internal democracy among the political parties, pointing out the police had an important role to play in checking the incidents of violence.

Ajayi said the body was planning a rally to campaign against political violence.
