  • Alumni rehabilitate alma mater

They met for the first time in 30 years after graduating from the famous Command Secondary School, Ipaja, one of the post-primary military schools in Lagos State.

Any wonder members of the 1987 set of the old students were excited when they met at their 30th re-union anniversary.

Addressing the audience, the Chairman, re-union anniversary planning committee, Sesan Obe, said the get-together was aimed at considering ways the old students could give back to their Alma mater.

He said: “It’s good we consider ways of giving back to our Alma mater. It is a good thing that we should not forget our source. That is why the 1987 set had taken up the initiative to embark on significant projects in the school. Also we are coming together to give special gratitude to God for keeping us till date.

“Understandably, we have gone through different stages of life over the years. Our thoughts, instincts and values have been remodelled. We use the opportunity to re-unite, reconnect and blossom.”

Earlier, Chairman of the 1987 alumni association, John Owolabi, said “the old students are coming together after 30 years of separation to re-unite and reminisce on the lovely years we spent together in Command and continue to champion projects in the school as a way of giving back to an institution that moulded us.”

One of the high points of the forum was the awards presentation to some of the old teachers. The 1987 Commandant of the school, the late Colonel Lawrence Lawal, was one of the beneficiaries. His widow, Mrs. Modupe Lawal received the posthumous award.

The alumni rehabilitated some of the school’s facilities which were destroyed by rain storm. Obe said: “The 1987 set rebuilt the school’s volley ball court and the school’s pavilion which was destroyed by rain storm which also blew off the roof of the school’s classroom.

  • Doregos fetes 96 graduands

The 2017 graduands of the Doregos Private Academy, Ipaja, were treated like royalty during the 23rd graduation of the school held recently at the St Bernadette School hall.

The reason for the celebration was the outstanding performance of the class in international competitions as well as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In his speech, the Head of School, Mr Adebisi Adegbulugbe, said the 96 graduands distinguished themselves by their achievements and urged them to continue in all they learnt in the school.

“This class of 2017 is a bit outstanding.  The WASSCE results recently released is a pointer to it.  Our students did excellently well. This particular set achieved a lot,” he said.

Mrs Clementina Abeke Doregos, proprietress of the school, said some members of the class who represented the school at a competition organised by Intel in the United States, had got scholarship.

“This set really did well both nationally and internationally.  About six of them won scholarship and their result was really fantastic.  That is why ou see parents are really happy today,” she told The Nation in an interview.

Mrs Doregos said she was fulfilled that the school had produced 23 sets, saying some of its alumni already had their children enrolled in the school.

“I feel very fulfilled because this is the joy of dealing with all these children,” she said.

In his speech, chairman of the occasion and member of the editorial board of The Nation, Mr Steve Osuji, counseled the graduands to make the efforts of their parents and teachers count.

Osuji, who is also the father of the outgoing head girl, Akachi, urged them to be focused, sharing how being focused as an undergraduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) helped him to excel.

“Your parents, teachers and others made it count for you.  A journey of 16 years is a marathon and also a relay.  We are passing the baton to you.  You are big boys and girls; you are all expected to be in the university by September.  You are going into campus in a few months; the world has become a very dangerous place.  From now on you will be on your own.  You will have to take critical decisions that will affect your life.  Shun cultism, drugs, homosexuality, and what I call tripping,” he said.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of gifts to the graduands and the handover of the staff of office by the outgoing head boy, Folarin Pelumi and Akachi to the incoming head boy and head girl.

In his speech, Folarin recalled the good times he spent with his peers in the school.

He said: “At this stage, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to certain people, because I realise that I would not have been able to stand before you today if it were not for the wonderful support of the school and so many special people in my life.  Our school has really taught us to mutually trust and respect one another, achieve individual aspirations and get on in life with social compassion and helping others.  That is why it behoves on me to extend my heart of appreciation to the school for showing us the difference between the easy way and the right way.”

  • Lagos communities decry poor power supply by Ikeja Electric

Electricity consumers in some suburbs of Lagos State on Friday decried poor electricity supply by Ikeja Electric (IE) in the last one month in spite of proclaimed improvement in power generation.

The consumers expressed their feelings in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Those in Okota, Alaguntan and Gowon Estate areas the hours in which electricity was supplied daily had reduced drastically.

They also said that contrary to their expectations, the reduction in supply was not accompanied by reduction in monthly billing by the company.

Mr Godfrey Okoro, a resident of Okota, said the inconsistent power supply in the area had become “dehumanising.“

Okoro further said the power supply to Okota had reduced considerably, compared to the estimated billing being brought by IE representatives, resulting in unnecessary confrontation between the consumers and the IE staff.

“What is our sin in this area that IE always gives us electricity for just one hour? To make matters worse, this light comes in the middle of the night when we are usually asleep.

“The company will not even consider the shortfall at the end of the month while distributing bills for the previous month.

“This is injustice, we hope that the privatisation of power in Nigeria will provide results to the lingering power supply problems, but it is even worse now,’’ Okoro said.

Another consumer from Gowon Estate, Mr Joseph Folorunsho, said energy supply to the area had reduced in the last two months for reasons IE could not explain.

Folorunsho said, “It is unfortunate that we are experiencing this blackout; we pay our bills regularly, yet there is no value for the money we pay for electricity.

“I thought the new government will bring us out of the doldrums but it appears we are being plunged deeper into darkness by the DISCOs.

“It is so bad that you cannot buy food items in bulk to store in the freezer to save cost in this harsh economy, this is terrible.’’

Mr Abiodun Yusuf, a resident of Alaguntan in Alimosho Local Government Area, said that the transformer supplying energy to the community had been faulty since February, causing irregular power supply with no solution in sight.

Yusuf appealed to the company to replace the old transformer, adding that the outage had domestic and economic repercussions for the community.

When contacted, Mr Felix Ofulue, the Head, IE Corporate Communications Unit, said the shortfall in power supply to consumers was due to the reduction in the supply received from the National Grid (NG).

According to Ofulue, it is what IE gets from the national grid that it shares equitably among its customers.

“Some may seem to get more than the others because of a combination of technical and commercial factors.

“From Okota to Ikotun, cases of vandalism are very rampant and this is contributory to reduction in power supply to consumers in those areas.

“In the last three months, we have witnessed more than 10 cases of vandalism in these areas,’’ the IE official said.

Ofulue, assured the residents of Alaguntan that another transformer would be provided for the community soon.

For Iyanapaja and Gowon Estate residents, he said the irregular power supply being experienced in the two areas were as a result of collapsed towers at Shagari Estate.

“The collapsed towers at Shagari Estate have affected the Agege and Ipaja injection, and disrupted power to many areas within that environment.

“However, we are on top of the situation as repairs are ongoing on the towers, it should be completed by the end of May.’’

He apologised for the inconveniences caused by irregular power supply to all the areas, saying that the company was concerned and working to normalise the situation.
