  • Saleswoman bags ten years for stealing employer’s N2.5m

    33-year-old saleswoman, Nkiru Ocha, is to spend the next 10 years in jail, a verdict by Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court ruled in Lagos on Monday.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. Ipaye-Nwachukwu, who handed down the verdict, however, gave the convict an option to pay N2. 57 million to the complainant and spend five years in prison.

    The court said the woman was found guilty of the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing brought against her.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused on her first arraignment on June 28, 2013 had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000.

    The accused had told the court that some people who had posed as customers on Oct. 27, 2012, at 9.00 a.m. at Block 5, Shop 55, Zone D, Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, used some magical means to take the money away.

    Police Prosecutor Chinalu Uwadione told the court that the Ocha claimed that two persons had approached her and pretended to be customers but before she knew what was happening, they used a white handkerchief to swipe her face making her to lose consciousness.

    She said the accused, who was a saleswoman of Mr Augustine Onwuja, Chairman of Danberton Nigeria Ltd, claimed she was robbed of N2.5 million in the process being sales of the previous day.

    According to her, she later regained her consciousness at Mazamaza, some few kilometers from the complex.

    The offences contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Woman docked for injuring girl

    A 40-year-old woman, Motunrayo Adadi, who allegedly inflicted injury on the head of a 13-year-old girl, Deborah Matthew, on Tuesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.‎

    Adadi, a resident of 15b, Lati Erelu Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of unlawful treatment, human trafficking and assault.‎

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences at No. 15b, Lati Erelu Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, at about 6.30 a.m. on November 11.‎

    Osayande said the accused assaulted the 13-year-old girl and inflicted injury on her head.‎

    She said that Adadi did engage in human trafficking by using Deborah as house help and treating her indecently. ‎‎

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 245, 135 and 276 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The chief magistrate said the addresses of the sureties must be verified, and adjourned the case until December 15 for mention.

    Man docked for allegedly defiling two sisters

    A 31-year-old man, Abayomi Oyedeji, was on Tuesday docked  in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly detaining and defiling two sisters, aged two and four.

    Oyedeji, who resides at No.61, Oduselu Street, Itire, Lagos, was arraigned on a four-count charge that bothers on unlawful detention and defilement of children.

    ‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that ‎ the accused committed the offence at No. 61, Oduselu Street, Itire, Lagos, at about 3.a.m. on November 13 and November 14.

    ‎Osayande said that the accused resided at the same address with the parents of the girls.

    She said that the girls’ mother was ill and there was need to rush her to the hospital while the girls were alone in the house.

    “The accused, who was a neighbour to the complainant, then unlawfully detained both of them with intent to have sexual intercourse with them.

    She said the accused unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the girls by defiling the four-year-old girl on November 13, but was caught when he tried to defile the younger one the following day.

    ‎The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 137 and 144 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    ‎The accused however pleaded not guilty to the charge.‎

    ‎The Senior Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.‎

    Nwachukwu said one of the sureties must be a civil servant on not less than salary grade level 14, while the other must be resident in his own building.

    She said the sureties should provide evidence of tax payments and that their addresses must be verified.‎

    ‎She adjourned the case until January 25, 2018, pending the advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions ( DPP ).

    Court docks man for allegedly defiling teenager

    A 43-year-old man, Anthony Ibodhe, who allegedly detained and defiled a 12-year-old girl, was on Friday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Ibodhe, who resides at No. 22, Olayinka St., Itire, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of unlawful confinement and defilement.
    ‎‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, insisted ‎that the accused committed the offence at No. 22, Olayinka St., Itire Lagos at about 02.00.p.m. between Oct. 5 and Nov. 7.

    ‎‎She said the accused, who resides at the above address with the parents of the girl, was in the habit of detaining the girl and having sexual intercourse with her whenever her parents were not around.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 135 and 144 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
    ‎However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.‎

    ‎The Senior Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.‎
    Nwachukwu ordered that one of the sureties must be a civil servant, not less than level 14, while the other must be resident in his own building,

    She said that sureties should provide evidence of tax payments and have their addresses verified.‎

    ‎‎She adjourned the case until Jan. 25, pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions ( DPP ).

    Man docked for defiling five-year-old

    A 22-year-old man, Lawrence Uche, who allegedly defiled a five-year-old girl by inserting one of his fingers into her vagina, was on Tuesday charged before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Lawrence, who resides at No. 7, Aina St., Johnson Bus Stop, Ijeshatedo area of Lagos State, is facing a charge of defilement.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 11 at his residence.‎

    She said that the accused lured the girl into his apartment and inserted one of his fingers into her private part.‎

    “He was caught by some neighbours who handed him over to the police,’’ he said.

    Osayande said the offence contravened Section 135(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted him bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties should be gainfully employed and they should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.‎

    ‎Nwachukwu said the case file should be duplicated and sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPPs) for legal advice.

    She adjourned the case until Oct. 5 for mention.

    Man docked for abducting boy

    A 42-year-old man, Ola Jaiyeola, was on Friday arraigned at the Surulere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly abducting a 16-year-old boy.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told court that the accused committed the offence with some people now at large on May 23 at about 4.00.p.m at No. 5, Olaiya Close, Orile Iganmu, Lagos.

    Osayande said that the kidnapped boy was reported missing by his parents and that investigation showed that the boy was last seen with the accused.

    “The accused could not give any reasonable explanation on what business he had with the kidnapped boy,’’ the prosecutor stated. ‎

    Osayande said the offences contravened Sections 271 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties.

    She said that one of the sureties should be a civil servant not below grade level 14, while the other should own a property within court’s jurisdiction.‎

    Nwachukwu adjourned the case until Sept. 21 for mention.

    Man faces child defilement charge, gets N500,000 bail

    A 52-year-old man, Dickson David, who allegedly abducted and defiled a 12-year-old girl, was on Wednesday released on N500, 000 bail on the orders of a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The ‎ Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused two sureties in like sum.

    Nwachukwu said one of the sureties must be a civil servant on at least Grade Level 14, while the other surety must be a community leader or a cleric.‎

    In addition, the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    David, a resident of No. 11, Kadiri St., Itire, Lagos, had pleaded not guilty to the charges of defilement and indecent treatment of the minor.

    ‎‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 25 at his apartment at 8.45 p.m.

    ‎‎Osayande said the accused unlawfully and indecently treated the 12-year-old girl by unlawfully detaining the girl against her will and defiled her.

    ‎The offences contravened Sections 135 and 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 137 stipulates life imprisonment for child defilement.

    The case was adjourned until Sept. 19 for mention.

    Two men charged with anal sex, affray in Lagos

    Two men — Promise Oluwabunkenoye and Kehinde Abiola — on Wednesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos charged with anal sex.

    The accused — ‎Oluwabunkenoye, 24, and Abiola, 29 — whose addresses are unknown, are  facing a two-count charge of same-sex having sexual intercourse and fighting in the public‎.

    ‎The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande told the court that the accused with others still at large committed the offences at City Centre Hotel at Ijeshatedo in Surulere about 3.00.p.m. on June 1.

    Osayande said the accused were caught by a police patrol team fighting publicly over non-payment of money for sexual acts.

    She alleged that while the police interrogated them, one of the accused confessed to the fact that the he was invited to Romeo and Juliet Hotel located at Ejigbo on May 28 at 5.00 a.m. for anal sex.

    ‎“He promised to pay some money if he consented to the act, but the accused refused to pay after enjoying himself.”’

    ‎He noted that the offences contravened Sections 54 and 136 of the Criminal Law of  Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    She ordered ‎that the accused should submit their passport-size photographs to the court registrar.

    Nwachukwu  said  one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the other must be a cleric or a community leader.

    In addition, the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment to the government.

    She adjourned the case until Aug. 3 for mention.‎

  • Man faces child defilement charge.

    A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of N200,000 to one Daniel Okon who allegedly defiled his neighbours four-year-old daughter.

    ‎Chief Magistrate A. Ipaye-Nwachukwu also ordered that Okon,36, should produce two sureties, one of whom should be a civil servant of Grade Level 14 or above.

    She directed that the other surety must be a landlord in Lagos State.

    Ipaye-Nwachukwu added that the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment.

    Okon, who resides at Aguda in Surulere, Lagos, had pleaded not guilty to counts of defilement and indecent treatment of a minor.

    ‎‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, earlier told the court that the accused lured the child into his apartment and had sexual intercourse with her while her parents were away.

    She said that Okon committed the offences at 11.56.a.m. on April 21.

    ‎The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the alleged offences contravene Sections 137 and 135(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The case has been adjourned until June 27 for mention.

     

  • Man gets N200,000 bail for defiling minor

    A 29-year-old man, Ismaila Wahab,who allegedly defiled a nine-year-old girl, was on Wednesday released on a bail of N200, 000 on the orders of a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Ikwechukwu , a resident of No. 24, Shonibare St.,Isolo, Lagos, is being tried for a three count charge of indecent treatment, defilement and threat to life.

    ‎‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 6 at No. 24, Shonibare St.,Isolo, Lagos.

    ‎‎She said the accused assaulted the underage girl by forcibly inserting his manhood into her private part.

    The accused forcefully had carnal knowledge of the girl and also threatened to kill her if she dare tell anyone about the crime he committed, Osayande said.

    “The girl’s parents, who reside in the same compound with the accused, reported the case to the police after their daughter narrated her ordeal.”

    ‎The offences contravened Sections  56 (1a), 135(1) and 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

    ‎The accused pleaded innocence of the offences.

    The ‎ Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum, one of who must be a civil servant of  not less than Grace Level 14 while the other surety should be a landlord in Lagos State.

    She said the sureties  should also provide evidence of tax payment to the government.

    The magistrate directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    The case has been adjourned until May 30.
