Fanfare as iStore unveils latest iPhone products

Lovers of the iPhone brands were awestruck as the luxury phone company unveiled latest in the series of its iconic phone products across the globe, recently.

Counterparts in Nigeria’s emerging market were not left out as a live streaming of the glitz and glam of the global launch was beamed live by the franchise company iStore for a packed audience at the Shoprite Mall, Ikeja.

The evening event which had the typical meet and greet fervour saw guests treated to a soiree as they enjoyed a cocktail of whine, snacks and other edibles to fill their taste buds while the live stream was ongoing.

The high octane event drew participants from different demographics including upwardly mobile executives, tech savvy and digital natives, business owners and other stakeholders together.

Speaking on the grand unveiling with our correspondent, Omokolapo Agunloye, B2B Sales Manager at iStores Nigeria was upbeat about what he described as the first-of-its-kind launch.

“The amount of products that they’ve released today, even I can’t contain my excitement. I’m so happy. I can’t wait for them to release all these products officially in Nigeria. Because remember, when they announce it, it’s actually a global launch. So, they release it in phases of countries.”

Amongst the products unveiled was the iPhone 16, the 128GB model, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max to mention just a few.

Speaking on the unique selling points of the new products, Agunloye said, the series 10 has bigger screen than the Apple Watch Ultra.

“Before, the Ultra was the biggest screen that we had. But now, the Series 10 is even bigger. So, you have a lot more display on your wrist that can mirror everything that is happening on your phone. So, you can imagine if I’m having a conversation with you, I’m getting messages. I don’t necessarily want to bring out my phone to check the message. Even on the AirPod lines. Now, there’s the AirPod 4G. The AirPod 4G, for example, the transparency, the noise cancellation. Everything is just better and better and better. As far as Apple products are concerned. So, today has been a wonderful day.

“There are some benefits that you will get that you will necessarily not get. That you will necessarily not get if you go and buy it now. Things like, one, if you buy an iPhone from us, right? You can trade in the current phone. So, let’s say you were using an iPhone 13 or 14 or 15. You can trade in that phone to reduce the cost that you’re going to pay for the new one. Two, when you buy that phone from us, normally if you buy it from Apple, you get one year warranty.

“But because we are the Apple premium resellers in the country, Apple is able to allow us to sell it and give two years warranty. So, we’re giving an extra one year warranty. It would cost you an extra over $100. But here, you’re getting it for free. Also, if you’re buying the iPhone 16 from us, the first 200 customers will get a free case, a free screen protector, a free AirTag, a free plug. All of these things I’m talking about, it’s almost like N150,000. If you need to buy it separately, you get what I’m saying. Also, if you buy the phone from us, you can insure it. And then, best of all, you can buy it and pay in installments. You can pay about six months or about 12 months. I don’t think there’s anybody that is doing that currently.”

Aside from Apple Intelligence, Agunloye said other new features include the formats.

“For example, we talked about the screen size. It was slightly increased, right? We talked about the battery life, which was improved. We talked about the new processor, the Apple Silicon, which is new, which obviously enabled all this Apple Intelligence to work properly.”

  • Apple cuts production orders for all three new iPhone models: WSJ

IPhone maker Apple Inc has cut production orders in recent weeks for all three iPhone models launched in September, the media reported on Monday.

There is a lower-than-expected demand for the new iPhones.

Apple’s decision to offer more models has made it more difficult to anticipate the number of components and handsets the company.

Apple shocked investors a few weeks ago with a lower-than-expected sales forecast for the Christmas quarter, prompting certain suppliers to issue warnings that pointed to weakness in new iPhone sales.

Forecasts have been particularly problematic for iPhone XR with Apple cutting its production plan by up to a third of the nearly 70 million units.

Some cuts for suppliers had been put in place to curb what they are asked to produce between September and February, the media said.

As recently as last week, Apple informed several suppliers that it lowered its production plan again for iPhone XR, said the report.

The company started selling its latest phone generation, the iPhone XS and XS Max, in September and the XR model in October.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

  • Apple faces lawsuits for slowing down aging iPhones

Apple faces lawsuits for slowing down aging iPhones

Apple Inc defrauded iPhone users by slowing devices without warning to compensate for poor-battery-performance, according to eight-lawsuits filed in various federal courts this week.

Since the company opened up about the year-old software-change, the tweak may have led iPhone owners to misguided attempts to resolve issues over the last year, the lawsuits contend.

All the lawsuits – filed in U.S. District Courts in California, New York and Illinois – seek class-action to represent potentially millions of iPhone owners nationwide.

A similar  case was lodged in an Israeli court on Monday, the newspaper Haaretz reported.

Apple did not respond to an email seeking comment on the filings.

The company acknowledged last week for the first time in detail that operating system updates released since “last year” for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE and iPhone 7 included a feature “to smooth out” power supply from batteries that are cold, old or low on charge.

Phones without the adjustment would shut down abruptly because of a precaution designed to prevent components from getting fried, Apple said.

The disclosure followed a December 18 analysis by Primate Labs, which develops an iPhone performance measuring app that identified blips in processing speed and concluded that a software change had to be behind them.

One of the lawsuits, filed Thursday in San Francisco, said that “the batteries’ inability to handle the demand created by processor speeds” without the software patch was a defect.

“Rather than curing the battery defect by providing a free battery replacement for all affected iPhones, Apple sought to mask the battery defect,” according to the complaint.

The plaintiff in that case is represented by attorney Jeffrey Fazio, who represented plaintiffs in a 53-million dollars settlement with Apple in 2013 over its handling of iPhone warranty claims.

The problem now seen is that users over the last year could have blamed an aging computer processor for app crashes and sluggish performance – and chose to buy a new phone.

Meanwhile, the true cause may have been a weak battery that could have been replaced for a fraction of the cost, some of the lawsuits state.

“If it turns out that consumers would have replaced their battery instead of buying new iPhones had they known the true nature of Apple’s upgrades, you might start to have a better case for some sort of misrepresentation or fraud,” said Rory Van Loo.

Loo is a Boston University professor specialising in consumer technology law.

But Chris Hoofnagle, Faculty Director for the Berkeley Center or Law & Technology, said in an email that Apple might not have done wrong.

“We still haven’t come to consumer protection norms around aging products,’’ Hoofnagle said.

Pointing to a device with a security flaw as an example, he said, “the ethical approach could include degrading or even disabling functionality.”

The lawsuits seek unspecified damages in addition to in some cases, reimbursement.

A couple of the complaints seek court orders barring Apple from throttling iPhone computer speeds or requiring notification in future instances.

  • Apple to start iPhone assemblage in India

Apple to start iPhone assemblage in India

Apple will begin assembling iPhones in India’s tech hub of Bangalore over the next few months as the US company makes inroads into one of the world’s fastest growing mobile markets.

“Apple will put together its phones here.

“This should happen in the next three to four months,” Priyank Kharge, Karnataka state’s information technology minister, told dpa by phone on Friday.

Kharge met Apple executives in January and said his government welcomed their proposal to commence initial manufacturing in the state.

“Apple’s intentions to manufacture in Bangalore will foster cutting-edge technology ecosystem and supply chain development in the state, which is critical for India to compete globally,” he wrote on Twitter.

Apple’s spokesman declined to provide an official comment but pointed to government statements on the matter.

The agreement is not yet final, as permissions and taxes still to be sorted out with the federal government, broadcaster NDTV reported.

Apple will likely partner with Taiwan manufacturer Wistron for its Indian operations, according to the report.

Apple’s iPhone is currently manufactured in China and Taiwan.

Kharge told local media there were “no teething issues,” indicating Karnataka had taken up the requirement for incentives with the federal government.

Apple just has a two percent share of the smartphone market in India as its devices are considered expensive for a majority of consumers.

India’s smartphone market grew nearly 30 percent in 2015, with sales of 104 million units.
