  • Southeast governors deny accusing Fed Govt of killing IPOB members

The Southeast Governors’ Forum has described a report that it accused the Federal Government of killing members of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) members as a “tissue of lie from the pit of hell”.

The chairman of the forum and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi described the report as a figment of the imagination of the writer.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Uzor, the governor said the report was intended to embarrass the forum and bring confusion between the governors and Federal Government to thwart the peace processes initiated with IPOB.

The statement said: “The originators of the falsehood are trying to sabotage the process of moving the zone forward and achieve lasting peace in it.”

Umahi noted that though it was the forum’s responsibility to protect the people’s lives and property, including IPOB members’, it should not be linked to politics.

He said: “The writer and his paymasters failed to appreciate the peace agreements reached between the governors’ forum and leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, during its last meeting in Enugu.

“The forum, therefore, wishes to assure the public that the communiqué issued at the end of its last meeting with IPOB leadership still stands. Anybody circulating any contrary report is Ndigbo’s real enemy.

“Such reports should, therefore, be disregarded as there was no such meeting against the Federal Government by the forum.”

Police confirm arrest of IPOB, MASSOB members in Ebonyi

The Police in Ebonyi on Saturday confirmed the arrest of some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in various part of the state for alleged unlawful sensitisation programme.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Jude Madu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the arrested suspects also included members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

Madu said that the suspects were arrested for unlawfully sensitising the public to stay at home on May 30, in observance of the group anniversary.

“They would be charged to court and the command would ensure that they are duly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“IPOB and MASSOB are illegal groups and did not get permission from the police to embark on such exercise which threatens the peace and security of the state.

“The command with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Titus Lamorde, has commenced intensive sensitisation of the populace to disregard the sit-at-home directive and go about their lawful businesses,” he said.

Madu warned members of the group not to carry out outlawed activities within the state before, during and after May 30, as the full weight of the law would be brought on any defaulter.

“Any person or group found culpable would be arrested and duly prosecuted as the groups’ activities amount to mutiny or fighting a sitting and legally recognised government.

“IPOB and MASSOB are techniques developed by some individuals to gain public interest and recognition as the former is even a breakaway organ of the latter.

“These groups have not provided amenities or other forms of social security for the people they are directing to stay at home; it shows that their intentions are not sincere and must be rejected by all,” he said.

He advised the groups that not everybody was interested in issues concerning secession as people still remember the horrors of the civil war and other upheavals in the country after then.

According to him, they should realise that most people are not interested in their preaching, therefore, they should not force anybody to be involved in their illegal and unlawful practices.

Madu called on traditional rulers and town unions across the state to assist the police in sensitising the people and provide relevant information about the group’s activities.

“The command has distributed various call contacts (numbers) to the public to report activities of these groups within this period, especially molestation, if they refuse heeding to the stay-at home order.

“Any gathering of two or more people propagating the IPOB/MASSOB messages or executing related activities should be promptly reported to the police for immediate actions,” he said.

A NAN Correspondent who visited the state police command reports that the arrested IPOB members were upbeat and chanting solidarity songs.

    …Arrest 40 IPOB members
Gory and grim sight confronted troops of Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS) at four militant shrines tucked inside the creeks of Akpabuyo and Bakassi local government areas, Cross River State.

The troops found 25 human skulls at various decomposing stages.

The discovery, it was gathered, raised concerns that the militants were engaged in human sacrifice, perhaps, to fortify themselves for their devilish operations.

The shrines, which were discovered at Ikot Ene Idam. Abakpa and Ikang creeks of the councils belonged to a notorious militant group, the Bakassi Strike Force (BSF).

The troops, who raided the area following a tip-off, also found other human body parts that littered the area including a complete human skeleton.

Confirming the development, the Deputy Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre (JMCC), Lt. Com. Thomas Otuji, said the operation was conducted by ODS’ Sector 4.

He said: “During the cordon and search operations, the troops discovered 25 human skulls in various stages of decomposition, a complete human skeleton and several other human body parts.

“The shrines were destroyed as troops continue to search for the perpetrators of these heinous acts against humanity. With the clearance of these shrines, the Bakassi Strike Force has effectively been smoked out from the areas it’s used to hold sway.

“It should be noted that the senseless killing of humans for ritual purposes is sacrilegious and will not be tolerated in any form within the Joint Operation Area”.

Otuji said that the troops while combing the creeks arrested two suspects at Idebe Ifak Anam, Ikot Okon Edem and Abakpa in Bakassi.

He said the suspects after preliminary investigation were discovered to be acting as spies for BSF militants.

Also, troops of Sector 2 operating in Bayelsa State, reportedly arrested 44 members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at a club along Mabinton Estate, Okaka, Yenagoa.

Otuji alleged that the group was planning to establish a state chapter of the banned IPOB to disrupt public peace.

“They were duly arrested and handed over to relevant authorities for further investigations. The unity of Nigeria is not negotiable and sacrosanct.

“Hence, any unlawful gathering that will cause mayhem, threaten the unity and sovereignty of the country will not be condone”, he said.

Otuji noted that in Rivers State, troops of Sector 3 raided den of cultists in Finima, Bonny following a distress call that the hoodlums were terrorizing the community with AK47 rifles.

He said the kingpin of the cultists identified as Eagle Face, on sighting the troops, dived into the water adding that two days after his lifeless body was seen by the locals floating in the creeks.

According to him the locals retrieved the body and buried it at Bonny River bank.

But he said that two of the suspected cult members were arrested with one locally made pistol, a machete and two handsets.

He said the acting Commander, Brig. Gen. Kevin Aligbe, commended members of the public for their continuous cooperation and provision of timely information to the troops.

He said Aligbe reassured residents and oil companies operatin in the region particularly the people of Southern Cross River of their safety and urged them to go about their legitimate businesses.

“Operation Delta Safe has the full backing of the Federal Government to bring sanity to the Joint Operation Area within its rules of engagement”, he said.

Delta Arewa decries ‘killings’ by IPOB members

The Arewa community in Delta State has decried the killing of its members by alleged IPOB activists.

Chairman, Moslem Lawyers Association Mohammed Elunor, at a news conference yesterday in Asaba, said the community members now live in fear following persistent attacks by IPOB members.

Elunor said: “A group of IPOB members invaded our mosque at Cable Point, vandalised the mosque and threw the Koran into the drains.

“The group went ahead to destroy tricycles belonging to our members and killing two persons in the process. There have been incidences of killing earlier this year at Mile 5 Ugbolu/Asaba area and several others.

On April 16, a Fulani boy was killed at Ugbolu; his hands were tied to his back and his throat was slashed, while his remains were buried in a shallow grave. Another boy was killed in same circumstances.”

He accused IPOB members of killing a Yoruba boy simply identified as Tunde, adding that the boy quarreled with an IPOB member and was taken away at night; he has not been seen since the incident happened two weeks back.

Elunor noted that despite repeated reports to security agencies, no arrest has been made, even when the training camps of IPOB members was known to security agencies.

He identified the training camp as Ugwu Nwosu in Mile 5 in Ugbolu, Oshimili North and Oneh Primary School in Asaba, as their meeting place.

“We have confidence in the security agents, but we want them to do more. We urge them to do better than what they are doing now.”

Elunor debunked insinuations that the attacks may not be unconnected to the Fulani/pastoralists feud, adding that the attacks may be attributable to the inflammatory reports on Radio Biafra.

Amongst members of the Arewa community present were Seriki Hausa/Chairman Arewa Community, Delta State, Ibrahim Gero, Etsu Nupe Asaba, Idris Adamu Kuta, Chairman Arewa Traders Association, Adamu Musa Shuwa, among others
