  • IPOB: Enemy of democracy

The increasing notoriety of the IPOB, this time as an external terror group, is yet another baffling example of the rising profile of counter-democratic forces in Nigeria. Gone are the days when the most potent threat to democracy was the military coup. The barrel of the gun has now been effectively replaced by the brigandage of rogue civilian individuals and groups who absurdly insist on realizing their rabid political interests by undermining established constitutional democratic institutions and processes.

IPOB exists on the extremist edge of such political derangement, possessed by the “actualization” of the dead and buried corpse of Biafran “nationality”, as its crazy cause.  Under the misguidance of Nnamdi Kanu, a queer non-entity who lived mostly in the UK as a south London DJ with dual British-Nigerian citizenship, IPOB, which rose from the debris of its predecessor MASSOB, took on the outlandish agenda of agitating for the “Independence and restoration of the defunct state of Biafra”.

Coming almost four decades after the generality of Igbos had re-integrated themselves into the post-war “no victor, no vanquished” Nigeria as fellow citizens across the land, exhuming Biafra as a political objective was an unthinkable farce and an abominable re-opening of healing wounds of war. But there was clearly something sinister behind the emergence of Kanu, wearing a Jewish prayer shawl and claiming to be a Jew, while fanning embers of ethnic rebellion to dismember his fatherland in inciting broadcasts from his London-based Radio Biafra.

It was no surprise that Kanu eventually focused on “guns and bullets” aimed at “Fulani herdsmen” before coming to Nigeria to, as it were, ignite the timed upheavals of provocative posturing against law enforcement and peaceful co-existence with his rapidly revitalized private army. He had no qualms in literally imposing his delusional leadership over the mandates of elected governors in his south-eastern pockets of influence and exhibiting daring defiance of court bail conditions and the wise counsel of respected elders and statesmen to exercise caution and restraint.

Only the no-nonsense “Python Dance” military operation decisively ended Kanu’s disaster-seeking daydreams and forced him to take to his heels in a clandestine escape that not only betrayed the zombie-loyalty of his “troops” but also lent credence to his mercenary mission as an agent provocateur. More devastating however was the quandary in which he left the so-called Igbo leaders who, in their own moment of myopic opportunism, dramatically embraced the irreverent rebel as their “son” and facilitated his bail apparently for pre-election interests.

The latest outing of Kanu’s IPOB followers in Europe as the terrifying enforcers of former Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu’s “Nuremburg Trials”, and threats to launch similar physical assaults against Igbo leaders, including elected governors, who visit Europe henceforth, is an indication of the IPOB determination to constitute an external and internal counterforce to the stability of our democracy. It has also been rightly viewed by Ohaneze Ndigbo and the southeast governors as a direct attack on their mandates as recognized leaders of the Igbo which could indeed challenge the sustainability of democracy in the southeast.

The unsettling scenario of the potential danger that the activities of IPOB pose to the integrity and survival of Nigeria’s democratic dispensation takes on an ominous implication in the face of  Kanu and the IPOB’s glaring lack of credibility or popular mandate to so forcefully demand the actualization of Biafra. They willfully refuse to recognize the right of all Igbos to vote for or against the proposition, as stipulated in the constitution.

If this is not akin to a coup d’etat in the making, it surely looks like one. In which case the federal government must take a renewed serious view and take necessary action to deal decisively with the looming threat to our democratic dispensation. Particular concern should be directed at the international dimension of the IPOB menace, especially the seemingly duplicitous stance of the British government , which provides a safe haven for Kanu and his Radio Biafra to launch attacks against the Nigerian state. Even when Kanu was in legal custody in Nigeria, he was visited by members of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. There must be more than meets the eye in Britain’s interest in an enemy of Nigeria it brought up and granted citizenship but refuses to call to order!

It is worth restating that, notwithstanding the political heresy of advocating a Biafran “renaissance”, Kanu and his clique would not be seen as enemies of the nation state if they channeled their agitation through registered political parties and the National Assembly as they know they should instead of war-mongering and seeking to destabilize Nigeria. Their deliberate choice of counter-democratic pursuit of political aspiration exposes them as unapologetic saboteurs of the Nigerian state thereby deserving maximum deterrence by all means deemed fit.

  • Ekweremadu: Apologise for supporting IPOB, APC tells PDP

The Governing All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to offer public apology to Nigerians for supporting the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the past and playing politics with them.

Reacting to weekend’s attack on former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu in Nuremberg, Germany by members of the group, National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu described the reaction of the PDP to the attack as hypocritical.

Issa-Onilu said the group his under regional identity to perpetuate criminality in the region while receiving the backings of the PDP and its leaders, stressing that the attack on Ekweremadu was an affront on political dignity.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) strongly condemns the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu, immediate past Deputy Senate President and serving Senator by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Saturday in Nuremberg, Germany.

“Those involved in the despicable actions and the organisation they represent are unworthy in character. No Nigerian should be assaulted in the manner Senator Ekweremadu was. It is an indecent action and it is below the acceptable standard of behaviour expected of our citizens whether in Nigeria or abroad.

“It is however regrettable that some of the people and organizations who had offered these irresponsible elements open support in the past are raising their voices now. It would be recalled that the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its leaders chose to play politics over a matter that called for collective patriotic actions when IPOB raised a terror group in the South East.

“It is clear that PDP and its other short-sighted co-travelers who were the main cheerleaders of IPOB owe this country an apology. IPOB hid under regional identity to perpetrate criminality having recruited some misguided elements and miscreants.

“Are we surprised by the PDP’s hypocritical reaction to the unfortunate attack on Senator Ekweremadu? No! The PDP and their leaders have acted true to type. This is what happens when politicians become myopic and allow narrow sentiments becloud their sense of judgement.

“We all have a responsibility to collectively rise against evil wherever we find it and in whatever guise it appears. We hope lessons have been learnt from this unfortunate incident.”

  • Biafra: Be wary of Kanu, IPOB terrorists – Group urges Nigerians abroad

Nigerians living abroad have been asked to avoid Nnamdi Kanu and members of his outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group (NDMG), which gave the warning, said the activities of IPOB outside the shores of Nigeria needed concerted efforts by all critical stakeholders to protect the image of the country.

The group at a press conference held at the Enish Restaurant, Finchley, London on Wednesday, said the activities of IPOB are despicable and an affront to Nigerians all over the world.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group recently convened an emergency general meeting of its executives in London United Kingdom to review the recent posturing of the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

The activities of IPOB are despicable and an affront to Nigerians all over the world to the way and manner the image of the country has been dragged in the mud before the eyes of the international community.

Angela Boroh, President of the group, who spoke on behalf of NDMG, called Kanu and his members to desist from acts that would tarnish the image of Nigeria in the interest of peace and tranquillity.

    Her statement reads below.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group is dismayed that a group of Nigerians masquerading under the umbrella of IPOB would denigrate so low as to constitute themselves into a nuisance outside the shores of Nigeria.

While this is condemnable, it must be stated that Nnamdi Kanu and his militant members of IPOB abroad have exhibited a high level of disrespect for the constituted authority in Nigeria with the recent attack of a high ranking member of the National Assembly in Germany. The latest threat to attack Nigerians living abroad and those traveling abroad from Nigeria is also another indication of the despicable attitude of Nnamdi Kanu and his co-travellers.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group advise well-meaning Igbo Sons and Daughters in the Diaspora to distance themselves from Nnamdi Kanu and his terrorist group IPOB at the risk of been labelled terrorists. All well-meaning Igbo Sons and Daughters in the Diaspora must rise to this challenge and condemn the actions of IPOB that has brought shame to Nigeria our beloved country.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group wishes to inform the world of its total and unflinching support for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, under whose leadership of the country Nigeria has experienced tremendous growth and development.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group identifies with the leadership style of President Muhammadu Buhari that been translating the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians into tangible realities in the past four years. This much can be seen in critical sectors of the Nigerian economy that were hitherto moribund as a result of leadership failure by previous administrations.

The Nigerians in Diaspora salutes the courage and commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari in his quest to take Nigeria to greater heights.

The war against corruption as instituted by the administration of President Muhummadu Buhari is highly commendable and an indication that Nigeria can be great again. The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group believes that with if the present efforts at ridding Nigeria of corrupt practices are sustained, Nigeria would indeed move to the next level of sustainable growth and development.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group is also aware that the various diplomatic shuttles by President Muhummadu Buhari has resulted in economic prosperity for Nigeria as a country and it is our considered opinion that more of those diplomatic shuttles are necessary for Nigeria to consolidate its position in the comity of nations in the world.

The war against terrorism and other militant groups in Nigeria is another area the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has performed creditably well. Consequently, the Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group applauds the various security agencies involved in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group wishes to call on all well-meaning stakeholders in the Nigerian project to extend their support to the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in this critical point of our existence.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group also wishes to advise Nnamdi Kanu and his gang to desist from acts that would tarnish the image of Nigeria in the interest of peace and tranquillity.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group also uses this medium to advise well-meaning Nigerians in the Diaspora to go about their normal business without fear from attacks by members of IPOB.

That Nnamdi Kanu and his members should act as a matter of urgency desist from any act that would cause economic or physical harm to any Nigerian in the Diaspora.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Monitoring Group herby declares its absolute confidence in the unity of Nigeria and believes that no organization, despite the multiple evidence of funding from a terrorist network can cause the disintegration of Nigeria.

  • IPOB’s sit-at-home witnesses partial compliance in Southeast

How did the sit-at-home order by the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) go in the Southsouth and Southeast yesterday?

It was complied with in some states in both region, while others shunned the directive.

IPOB has been observing May 30 of every year as sit-at-home in the past five years in remembrance of Biafra fallen soldiers.

They were killed in the 1967-70 civil war.

    Imo residents defy order

In Owerri, the the Imo State capital, residents defied the order and went about their businesses.

Banks and markets were opened, including the Relief and Timber markets.

There were also academic activities in some schools.

A school administrator, Michael Ugochukwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) why the order was shunned.

“We did not tell the students anything about it. We allowed parents to use their discretion. Some came while others stayed back.”

Another school owner, Mrs. Chinwendu Osuji, said the order was not captured on the list of holidays for the current academic session.

Mrs. Osuji said: “The school did not think it was wise to add an unofficial holiday to the week, having already observed May 27 and 29 as public holidays.

“We already observed holiday for two days this week and we didn’t see the need to add an unofficial third. We did not announce it, even though some parents held their children back at home, probably for fear of the unknown.”

A commercial vehicle operator, Anthony Obinka, said: “Whether or not there is a holiday, people have to feed. So, I came out to look for my daily bread.”

Aba residents comply, Umuahia residents ignore directive

In Aba, the commercial city of Abia State, residents complied with the order. But residents of Umuahia, the capital, did not.

Many residents did not venture out. The few people who did could not get vehicles to their destinations.

There was no business activity at the popular Ariaria Market which was opened. Many schools were shut.

A trader at the market, Mr. Simeon Ogbonna, said he came out to see that everywhere was empty.

Though the major entrances to the Eke-Oha Market were opened –  commercial activities took place there.

Shops at the Jubilee Road Spare Parts Market and Saint Michael’s Road Phone and Computer Accessories Market were also shut.

A resident, Levi Onwuserokwu, described the order as proper because the dead deserved respect.

“If we did not remember the sacrifices of our fallen heroes how can we pray for the repose of their souls?,’’ he asked.

Police patrolled the streets; troops were deployed in flashpoints and major markets’ entrances.

Aba Area Commander Peter Opara, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), told NAN that the city was calm, adding that the flashpoints were free of trouble-makers.

But in Umuahia, business activities were in full swing;  schools, private and government offices opened for business.

The police paraded major streets, blaring sirens. They also mounted checkpoints at various spots.

A trader, Daniel Chima, said there was no unity of purpose among the Igbo on the directive.

He said: “We the Igbo, particularly in Umuahia, are not united. Umuahia residents are not co-operating with other residents in the Southeast.

“Nnamdi Kanu is from Umuahia but Umuahia has ignored the order. I came out to sell because I saw others who have come out as well.

“I was supposed to go to Aba today to buy some goods but I called my brother, who resides there and he told me I shouldn’t come because Aba was observing the sit-at-home directive.”

A resident, Chkwumeremeze Udu, blamed IPOB leaders for not creating awareness on the directive.

“As you can see, I’m in my shop. I was not aware that there was such directive until I came to shop this morning”, he said.

A Biafra campaigner, Kelechi Michael, said: “We want peace, not war. In Umuahia, unlike other states in the Southeast, nobody will sit at home. The state government is not even in support of the directive”.

A teacher, Mrs. Rosemary Orji, said her school had earlier contemplated to send pupils home for safety but rescinded the decision when they saw everywhere was calm.

“Nobody has come to harass or molest us. We are carrying out our normal activities. We have also called our pupils who wanted to sit at home because of fear that they should come to school,” she said.

Commissioner of Police Ene Okon urged residents to ignore the directive.

He said the police in collaboration with other security agencies had put measures in place to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Catholic priest, sales rep, others injured in Anambra

Some Catholic Church members, including a Priest in Nnewi, Anambra State, were yesterday attacked by people suspected to be IPOB members.

Those assaulted were Rev Fr Festus Eziamaka of St Judes Parish in Nnewi and a sales’ executive with the SUN.

Passengers of a commercial bus were also attacked.

The parishioners were said to be going for early morning mass; others were returning from a vigil when they were attacked.

It was gathered that the pro-Biafra groups, numbering over 2,000,  stormed the industrial city as early as 4:30am to ensure compliance with the order.

Police spokesman Mohammed Haruna said he was not aware of any casualties.

He said the directive failed in the state.

But, Rev Celestine Okonkwo, Secretary to the Bishop, confirmed that his colleague in charge of St Judes Parish, was attacked.

He said the priest was attacked on his way to the first Mass of Ascension for his parish.

He said the priest was rushed to hospital.

The agitators, comprising the IPOB, Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and others, armed with machetes, sticks and other dangerous weapons, were sighted at Ibeto Junction as early as 5am.

Recounting his ordeal, The Sun sales representative, Eze Chukwu, said: “I told them I work with The Sun Newspaper but they didn’t believe me and some of them raised their clubs to hit me.

“I begged them to follow me to where parcels of our newspapers were packed for them to be convinced that I work with The Sun and they followed me and saw the parcel before they now asked me to run away.”

A Toyota saloon marked CL 163 BEN was attacked at Nnewi Roundabout.

The attackers smashed the vehicle’s front and rear windshield, injuring the occupants.

In Onitsha and Nnewi, Anambra State.

All the markets, financial institutions, transport companies, schools and government institutions were shut.

All was calm in Awka, the state capital, where security agencies including the army, navy, police and other para-military outfits mounted security checks at different junctions.

Youths turned empty streets and roads into football playing fields.

The popular Onitsha Main Market, Marine Market, Ose Okwodu Market and shops, including the popular Sir Emeka Offor and other plazas were shut.

The popular Bridgehead Head Market with over 25 markets, including the Onitsha Patent Medicine market was closed.

    Partial success recorded in Asaba

In Asaba, the Delta State capital, many schools and companies defied the order.

The popular Ogbonogono Market, on Nnebisi Road, was opened around noon after traders observed the mandatory Thursday sanitation.

Commercial vehicles, including Okada riders also plied the road.

A resident, Okonji Nwachuwu, said the directive “cannot, and will never work in this part of the country which is the Niger Delta or Southsouth.

“Those in the Southeast can sit at home if they have nothing to do but for us in Asaba, today (yesterday) is not a weekend neither is it a national holiday. People should go about their activities and forget about the directive.”

Few vehicles were seen on the Benin-Asaba-Onitsha Expressway, as people in the axis complied with the directive.

Regular commercial buses going to Onitsha from Asaba did not operate.

In Okwe, a suburb of Asaba and an IPOB stronghold, schools and shops were shut.

IPOB members shun order in Rivers

IPOB members and Nnamdi Kanu’s loyalists in Rivers ignored the sit-at-home in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Businesses premises, shops opened, and commercial vehicle operators were on the roads.

Despite the heavy down pour, most of the business centres operated by key IPOB members.

Yesterday’s order was a clear departure from the previous remembrance day declared for fallen heroes in the Southsouth.

The Nation also observed that contrary to what has almost become a norm for the outlawed group, no form of protest or street march was staged in any part of the state, even as there was nothing to show that such celebration was being marked in the state.

Even most shops in the Ikoku Auto Spare Parts Market, Okija Electrical Appliances Market, Mile 3 and Mile 4 (Tiles) and Ojoto, owned and managed by Igbo youths, opened for business activities.

Also the rate of compliance at Oyigbo Local Government Area, predominately occupied by Igbo indigenes was low.

Some shop owners, who spoke to our reporter, said they did not ignore the IPOB order outright,  adding that they opened their shops for skeletal transactions,  having observed Democracy Day public holiday,  which affected businesses on Wednesday,  coupled with early morning downpour in the state.

A motor parts dealer at Ikoku and an IPOB member, Uchenna Dike, said he opened shop because he has customers he would not want to lose because of their steady patronage.

“I am a strong member of IPOB.  I don’t hide myself and feelings.  But, I came to the market because there are some of my strong customers, who told men that they will come to purchase some goods.  So, I wouldn’t want to lose them. That does not mean I ignored the people’s order. Once they come and I attend to them, I will lock up and leave”, Dike stated.

Policemen were seen patrolling of major roads in Port Harcourt to forestall a breakdown of law and order.  Some security vehicles were also positioned at strategic places in the state capital.

  • May 30 Sit-at-home order: Tension as Police, IPOB, MASSOB renew offensive

Palpable tension is building in the South East region ahead of the May 30 sit- at home order declared by the pro Biafra agitators as the police and members of the groups yesterday engaged in hot exchange of words over the plan.  The  police have  in strong terms warned the agitators comprising the proscribed indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB  and the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) to rescind the decision to go ahead with the sit- at home order but the agitators, yesterday replied that nothing would make them go back on the directive.

Following the renewed offensive between the police and the agitators, residents in different parts of the region  during he week engaged panic buying of food items. Some of them who spoke with The Nation said they were doing so to avoid starving to death if the faceoff between the police and the agitators escalates.

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mustapha Dandaura, unequivocally warned the group to desist from its plan or face the wrath of the command and it’s allied forces. The state Police Public Relation’s Officer ,Mr Mohammed Haruna, who had continued to issue statements on-behalf of the command, said the police in collaboration with the Joint Task Force JTF, had made adequate arrangements in making sure that residents were not harassed or intimidated on the said date, warning that the command would deal decisively with any miscreants parading as agitators.

REad also: Police, IPOB in fresh face -off over May 30 sit -at -home in Anambra

Haruna said some unscrupulous elements had been secretly moving to some locations in the state trying to hoist unauthorized flags without permission, adding that the command would not fold it’s arms to allow hoodlums invade the state in the name of sit -at -home by faceless people. Police patrol teams ,had already been deployed and they had been patrolling the streets of Onitsha, Awka, Ekwulobia, Nnewi and other flash points in the State. The PPRO said some of the items recovered from the miscreants so far arrested included  many Biafran flags  and other things with Biafran inscriptions. According to the command, ”  recall that the so called (IPOB) is still a proscribed organisation and all its activities remain illegal” “Therefore the command will not relent in it’s efforts of enforcing law and order in the state.”

Many  police commands in the region had earlier issued similar warnings. Despite the stern warning by the police,  IPOB, said it was not leaving any stone unturned in making sure that Biafrans would remain indoors on May 30 IPOB’s statement was issued in Awka by it’s Media and Publicity Secretary , Emma Powerful and made available to reporters The sit -at -home according to him, was to remember those killed during the war and others recently killed by security operatives and not to cause any trouble as being alleged by the police. In a statement by its leader, Uche Madu, MASSOB said: “A coalition of pro Biafran groups which agreed to speak with one voice in one accord with unity of purposes met and insisted on our earlier resolutions that the annual May 30th celebration of the Bi afran people will hold this year in a unique formula.

Disturbed by the tension currently building up in the south east region, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide in a statement signed by the President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said: “We are disturbed by the negative news on the killings of MASSOB and IPOB  members in Anambra State. Few days to the May 30 sit –at- home order, scores of young people have been recorded  dead with many injured innocent youths hospitalized. Over 33 youths were arrested in Nsukka and more casualties could be recorded on the remembrance day.

“The Southeast governors should as a matter of urgency rise up to the occasion and ensure that their primary assignment which is to protect lives and property of the citizens is carried out. “Many of them (except Anambra governor) will be taking a new oath of office on May 29.  They should not pretend that all is well and allow bloodshed to occur in Igboland as armed herdsmen and bandits are currently doing in the north.

We aware of the plot to unleash security agents against the agitators but as a precaution and preventive measure, the coalition of Biafra agitators should soft pedal as we can’t afford to expose our unemployed and productive youths to untimely deaths.  They should boycott protests, riots, display of Biafra flags and road procession under the guise of Jewish Community or religion. “We are fully aware of the plans of using road procession in Aba, Owerri,Asaba,Warri, Enugu,Onitsha, Afikpo, Abakiliki,Awka and Calabar to protest against the killings of Igbos by bandits in the North. We beg that there should be no reprisal attacks. Rather, they should be ready to dialogue with Southeast governors and the presidency, if there’s any room for that. The Biafra agitators should remember that ‘once beaten, twice shy’.

  • Kanu: I’m vindicated about Atiku’s birth place

Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said the claim by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that former Vice-President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar, is a Cameroonian has vindicated him.

Addressing his members through his broadcast on Radio Biafra, Kanu said: “The headline: ‘Atiku Is Not A Nigerian, APC Tells Tribunal’, is a vindication that everything I say on Radio Biafra is the truth. It may appear outlandish and unbelievable at first, but eventually history always vindicates me.

“As everyone can see very clearly, it is unambiguously stated that for you to become the President of Nigeria, you must be born a Nigerian. Simply put, your birth certificate or any official notation must say clearly that you are a Nigerian. As at the time Atiku was born, the citizenship on his birth certificate read Cameroonian.”

The sex-exiled pro-Biafran leader described the 1999 Constitution, as amended, as clearly defective because those who crafted it were neither philosophers, social scientists, thinkers nor constitutional experts.

According to him, the argument by some people that if Atiku was a Cameroonian, he could not have been the Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and Vice-President, will not hold water.

He noted that Section 131(a) of the Constitution is clear on who should be the President of the country.

Kano said: “The incontrovertible truth is that His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice-President of Nigeria for eight years, became a Nigerian by virtue of the referendum of February 11, 1961. He was not born a Nigerian and as such he became a Nigerian as a result of the British organised plebiscite held in British Cameroons to give the people of Adamawa, where Atiku comes from, the opportunity to choose where they would like to belong.

“When I first raised this issue, which incidentally has been ignored by all arms of government- including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), whose duty it is to ensure that candidates meet all stipulated constitutional requirements – it was not to insinuate or imply that Atiku is not a Nigerian. Rather, it is to highlight the very constitutionally critical point at the heart of IPOB agitation for Biafra independence, which is that asking for a referendum is never a crime in any law known to man…”

He berated Atiku’s defence team for what he called their weak and porous argument that if the PDP chieftain was not a Nigerian, he wouldn’t have become Nigeria’s vice-president, lived, invested and paid tax in the country for years as a citizen.

The proscribed IPOB leader noted that by virtue of relevant sections of Nigeria, anybody born in Adamawa between 1946, when Atiku was born, till 1960, was not qualified to contest election as President of Nigeria.

He added: “Atiku Abubakar was born on November 25, 1946 in Jada, now Adamawa State, then in Northern Cameroon. He was a citizen of Cameroon but now a Nigerian by plebiscite. This information has always been in the public domain. What I did was just to flag it…”

  • I’m vindicated on Atiku’s birth place, says Nnamdi Kanu

Leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has said the claim by All Progressives Congress (APC) to the effect that presidential candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar is not a Nigerian but a Cameroonian has vindicated him.

Addressing his members through his broadcast on Radio Biafra, Kanu said: “The headline ‘Atiku Is Not a Nigerian, APC Tells Tribunal’ is vindication that everything I say on Radio Biafra is the truth. It may appear outlandish and unbelievable at first, but eventually history always vindicates me.

“Therefore if Adamawa people can be allowed to freely choose where they wish to belong, then justice and equity dictates that we the people of Biafra must be allowed to do the same. This point that is lost on Justice Binta Nyako and numerous other semi-literate judges handling IPOB cases today in Nigerian courts.

While lambasting Atiku’s defence team over what he described as their weak and porous argument that if Atiku was not a Nigerian he wouldn’t have become Nigeria’s vice-president, lived, invested and paid tax in the country for years as a citizen, the IPOB leader said by virtue of relevant section of Nigeria, anybody born in Adamawa between 1946 when Atiku was born to 1960, was not qualified to contest election as president of Nigeria.

That Atiku was the Vice President is not the issue at hand but rather his suitability as defined by the constitution of Nigeria.

“With this ridiculous born in Nigeria requirement, nobody born in present day Adamawa before 1961 or those of us born in Biafra from 1967 to 1970 can ever vie for the office of the president of Nigeria.

“Atiku Abubakar was born on November 25, 1946 in Jada, now Adamawa State, then in Northern Cameroon, was a citizen of Cameroon but now a Nigerian by plebiscite. This information has always been in the public domain. What I did was just to flag it.

“The only part that can be said that I pioneered is that “Atiku became a Nigerian citizen by the sheer force of Referendum which is what I want for Biafra. I wanted to prove to some ignorant Nigerians and their quack judges that asking for a referendum is not treasonable felony,” the IPOB leader said.

Delta Police image maker, ASP Chuks Orisewezie denied that a protester was killed, adding  that the police arrested four IPOB members, adding that one protester was seriously injured.

He said, “The IPOB members this morning started protesting and attack our men at A Division, Asaba, on that process they were arrested. They assembled at Logos- Asaba expressway, and marched to Nnebisi road to launch attack on the police station”

He said Items recovered from IPOB members included pump action, 4 jack knives, charms, a Biafran flag and cans of fuel.

  • ‘I’ll remain grateful to my sureties in my trivials’ – Kanu

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has said he will remain eternally grateful to his sureties for standing by him all through his travails, trials and tribulations.

He described the bench warrant against him by Justice Binta Nyako as “mere academic exercise,” expressing confidence that it would be ignored by the international and diplomatic community.

In a broadcast monitored by The Nation corespondent in Awka, the IPOB leader insisted that Nigerian government could not by its antics incite the world against him.

He added that the diplomatic community had since expressed its disapproval of what had befallen IPOB in Nigeria.

He said, “I remain eternally grateful to my sureties for standing by me all through my travails, trials and tribulations.

“It smacks of judicial persecution for Justice Binta Nyako handling my case to claim that my sureties had withdrawn their surety.

“Justice Binta Nyako’s bench warrant against me makes the judiciary complicit in the persecution of innocent people and IPOB since mid 2015.

“Where a case is for hearing of motion, the trial judge must hear the motion and adjourn for any other process. On no account should he hear a motion and hear the merits of the matter, not to talk about delivering judgment. He may consider doing that in the very rare circumstance of consent by parties.

“When a matter has been adjourned for a particular purpose, it is my view that the business of the court on the day the matter is adjourned is the purpose for which it was adjourned.

” It is expected that parties have come prepared for that purpose for which the matter was adjourned. If it is expedient to change the purpose, it cannot be done by the court suo motu (on its own)  as the parties must agree.”

According to Kanu, another disturbing trend was the use of the media to prejudice public opinion against IPOB before and during trial, alleging that examples abound where media houses allowed themselves to be used as “willing agents” of persecution.

“In March last year, a continental human rights court restrained the Nigerian government from persecution of members of IPOB which the government is yet to obey.

“The arrest, detention and murder of IPOB family members is illegal, unconstitutional and in breach of the written laws of Nigeria.

“The fact that judges and supposed legal practitioners allow this travesty to continue is indicative of the level of ignorance that pervades the Nigerian judiciary,” he said.

  • Our members never burnt police station in Anambra – IPOB

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday, said the suspects recently arrested and paraded by Anambra police command for allegedly attacking a police station in the state were not their members.

The group wondered why police always linked IPOB which had remained a non-violent organisation, with criminal matters.

The police had on Monday, paraded five suspected members of the pro-Biafran group over the burning of one of its police stations in Ajali, Orumba, Anambra State.

A statement by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, insisted that no member of the group was criminal and had never bore arms since it started the movement for the restoration of Biafran state.

“IPOB members never carted way AK-47 rifles, burnt police patrol van or police station at Ajali, in Orumba, Anambra State, and will never do so until Biafra’s freedom is restored,” it said.

The group asked governors of Anambra and Abia States to release those arrested in their respective states, insisting that they remained responsible for the ongoing manhunt and illegal arrests as the chief security officers of the states.

The statement partly read, “Our people are in serious danger over the recent and latest version of manhunt and illegal arrest going on in Abia and Anambra states, instructed by Ikpeazu and Obiano.

“We are worried over the deployment and posting of Nigerian police and army officers in Biafraland.

“The commissioner of police in Anambra and Abia states including other states in Biafraland are Fulani officers, their spokespersons, area commanders and DPOs. Our people are seriously under cage.

“It is important we remind Nigerians and stakeholders in Abia and Anambra states to warn Ikpeazu and Obiano to release those arrested in their respective states or wait to see IPOB’s new strategy to restore Biafra sovereignty in the shortest possible time.”
