    IPOB: What role for intellectuals?

    GREAT revolutions or historical changes are usually heralded by intellectual ferment. The basics of such are usually founded on well thought out actions and ideas. Think of the great movements that have changed the course of history and led mankind in directions that have today remained enduring.

    The South African fight against the obnoxious Apartheid regime had intellectuals such as Albert Luthuli, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathdra, Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and a host of others. These were the intellectual house of the fight against a regime that oppressed the people. They were men of standing and reputation who were able to hold their own in any discussion and were respected by world leaders because of their intellect and ideas. They gave the anti-apartheid fight a fillip that could not be shunned anywhere in the world, even some foreign governments who found themselves giving tacit support to the apartheid regime were not able to fault the stance of such men.

    In other parts of the world, there was Mahatma Ghandi of India who was conscience of the fight for his country’s independence. He was the icon of the fight for liberation and his idea of non violence turned the tide against the British colonial overlord.

    His exploits inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world and was widely regarded as the father of India nation. He was a trained lawyer and was not a rabble rouser.

    Ernesto “Che” Guevara, an Argentine was trained as a medical doctor. He later became an author, guerrilla leader, diplomat and military theorist. He was a great contributor and comrade to the late Fidel Castro the former President of Cuba and his brother Raul. His wide experience as a medical student travelling throughout South America opened his eyes to the great injustice that was common in his country.

    He therefore decided to turn the tide and thus became an author and traveller around the world spreading the idea of revolution. He was in Guatemala, Mexico City, Bolivia and his journey even spread to Africa as he was in what is today known as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    Back home, during the Nigerian civil war of 1967-70, the Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, had on his side the intellectual vanguard of the Igbo race, at least at the initial stage. On his side to prosecute the war, even if their ideas were a little different from his, were such intellectuals like the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, he was Nigeria’s first president, trained in America and had the gravitas that commanded international respect and his voice in any issue was sought after.

    There was also the late author, Prof. Chinua Achebe, he had at the outset of the war won international repute as an author, academic and voice of reason. He had also held the influential position of director of the powerful federal radio. There was also the late writer Cyprian Ekwensi. Christopher Okigbo, one of Africa’s finest poets left the comfort of his home writing lyrical verses and went into the war field which consumed him. There were a host of other intellectuals and thinkers who threw their weight behind Ojukwu and helped to crystallise the idea of Biafra.  Perhaps this was possible because the late Biafran leader was himself a man of ideas. He was an Oxford trained History graduate and one of the first set of graduates to join the military in Nigeria.

    His foray into the military and the idea of the war was perhaps influenced by his training and the people who initially supported him took a look at his education and upbringing.

    However, the case of Nnamdi Kanu has been radically different and right from the beginning of his campaign, he has not been able to attract any Igbo intelligentsia to his cause. Could this be due to his not trying enough or that the intellectual are giving him a wide berth because of his perceived shallowness and poverty of ideas?

    Those who have watched him speak or listen to his talks on his Radio Biafra have concluded that the man who is widely said to be a dropout of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has not been able to proffer a coordinated argument as to what he wants to achieve with his self- styled Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

    In his agitation he has not appealed to the Igbo intelligentsia in any way, why? Imagine the attention his agitation would command to see either open or tacit support for his agitation from the Igbo intellectuals like Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Oby Ezekwesili, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Olisa Agbakoba and a host of others?

    For a man who has no definite academic qualification, whose immediate family are abroad and holds a dual citizenship where does he think he would go with his agitation without the support of the intelligentsia of which his people have a surfeit of?

  • Biafra: Centre charges South- East governors to probe Kanu, IPOB atrocities

    A civil society group, Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has hailed the declaration of the proscription and designation of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terror group.

    The centre said step taken by the Nigerian military authorities as well as the south eastern governors on the activities of the pro-Biafra agitators were quite commendable and a welcome development.

    Recall that the Defence headquarters had thjough its spokesperson, Majo Gen John Enenche had during the weekened labeled the Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB group as a terror squad.

    Consequently, governors from south eastern part of the country also proscribed the activities of the separatist group.

    Speaking on the development, Isaack Ikpa, the National Cordinator of CESJET, implored the governors to further back the proscription order up with actions.

    Ikpa added that they must immediately audit their cabinets to identify IPOB supporters and sympathizers in their folds since such people can sabotage them from inside

    He said, “CESJET lauds the Nigerian Military for taking the bold step and doing the needful by declaring IPOB as what it is as only an institution that has the interest of the country at heart could have marshaled such political will. We commend the Army for its decision to launch Operation Python Dance II, which we believe would flush out the criminal elements that usually make life unbearable for Nigerians in this part of the country.

    CESJET commend the South-East Governors for daring to proscribe IPOB even when they are daily blackmailed politically with threats of being labeled as traitors of their ethnicity. We implore the governors to back the proscription order up with actions. They must immediately audit their cabinets to identify IPOB supporters and sympathizers in their folds since such people can sabotage them from inside. The governors should charge traditional and religious leaders within their states to walk back the inflammatory support they had given the terror group in the past.

    “We however note that the Governors did not prescribe any punishment for these terrorists for the evil they had brought upon the land in the last few years. There was neither any indication as to what would happen to anyone that continues to carry out activities under the name of IPOB.

    “Furthermore, nothing was said of the other franchises that the terrorists use to operate, like the Biafra Zionists Movement. They did not talk about their sponsors and sources of funding. There was no mention of justice for the innocent Nigerians killed by these miscreants in the last few days. These are questions still begging for answers.

    Speaking futher, the CESJET boss added that the South-East Governors must therefore be categorical in the terms of reference that security agencies will act upon to enforce the proscription of the group.

    His words, “We also observed that there was no call for the immediate arrest of Nnamdi Kanu as the leader of IPOB terrorist group or any other person who goes out in the name of the group or its violent agitation. All these people, including the lawyer to Kanu, are accomplices that must be treated as such.

    “We make these points because the serpent of terrorism has only been struck as far as the IPOB monster is concerned. The head of the snake has not been cut off so the country cannot afford to be complacent at this point. Since the designation of IPOB as a terror organization is merely a first step in restoring sanity to that part of Nigeria, other steps necessary for peace and confidence building must be immediately activated.”

    The centre further called on the Attorney General of the Federation to in line with the Terrorism Prevention (Amended) Act 2013 take the necessary steps to nationalize and gazette the decision of the South-East Governors, stressing that such move would ensure that the terrorists no longer torment the peace of anyone in the name of IPOB anymore.

    He added, “The National Assembly, the Presidency (Executive) and the Judiciary should adopt a common front in dealing with the menace of IPOB as a terror group by taking all the steps expected of them. No room should be left for these terrorists to maneuver or manipulate the system to continue intimidating and threatening citizens. Since IPOB reportedly enjoyed massive financial, intellectual and political support from highly placed persons from the South-East, we proposed that the Federal Government delivers an amnesty package for those who funded or supported IPOB up until Friday September 15, 2017 to offer them the chance of distancing themselves from the terror group. Anyone subsequently found to be aiding and abetting the group should be treated in accordance with the Terrorism Prevention (Amended) Act 2013.

    “The international dimension must not be neglected. The designation of IPOB as a terrorist group should be strongly communicated to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The world must be urged to designate IPOB as an International Terror Group since it has presence in Germany, United Kingdom, United States and other countries. This is important to ensure that fleeing IPOB members do not regroup in any of these countries to plot attacks against Nigeria.”

  • No reasonable Igboman will support secession-Okorocha

    No reasonable Igboman will support secession-Okorocha

    Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has said that no reasonable Igboman would support secession or division of the country.

    According to him, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) , Nnamdi Kanu should be treated as a single individual because reasonable Igbo people have condemned the group in all ramifications.

    Governor Okorocha spoke on Saturday, September in Owerri at the new Yam festival organized by the State Council of Traditional Rulers headed by HRM Eze Samuel Ohiri.

    “Everyone has condemned IPOB in all ramifications and I say that whatever that young man is doing does not have the support of any of us. He should be picked up and treated as a single individual. No reasonable Igbo man is asking for secession. No reasonable Igbo man will support the division of this country.

    “I want to remind all Nigerians that Igbos are the people that fought the last war and if there was anyone so badly affected by that war is the Igbos. After the war, the 1st group of people to run to different ethnic groups and all other tribes for purpose of economic development was the Igbos.

    “The Igbos today in their thousands are in Kano, the Igbos today in their thousands are in Lagos, in Plateau and in all nooks and crannies of this country. And wherever you find them, they behave as if they are the owners of the land, even in most cases; they have Ezes in the communities where they find themselves, showing that they believe in the unity of this country.

    “The Igbos business men have more real estates and more properties and assets outside Igbo land than in Igbo land. So, I want to dissociate Igbos from this very thing that Igbos want to go for secession. A man that wants to go for secession cannot build mansions in Lagos, Kano, Plateau and the rest of the States.

    “I think we should single out this act of this young man from the rest of Nigerians. My worry again stands strongly on the fact that today, the issue of IPOB is being politicized. Today, most of them that never worked with the Buhari-led government are using this as an opportunity to fight the Federal Government. Call those people to order. It’s not far-fetched who these people are. Some of them are busy visiting Kanu’s house and encouraging him. Those people should make a rethink, because they are not doing this nation any good.”

  • I don’t want to see another war, says Obasanjo

    I don’t want to see another war, says Obasanjo

    Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned against the present tension in the country degenerating into a war situation.

    Obasanjo spoke while responding to the wave of violent agitation in the Eastern part of the country for Biafra republic led by Nnamdi Kanu, Obasanjo in an interview with Newsweek Magazine in London.

    “Those who fought in the war in Biafra will not want to fight any other war,” he said adding that “I have fought one war too many in Nigeria; I don’t want to see another.”

    While noting that the army’s “heavy boot” response to pro-Biafra sentiment is “not the solution,” he also said that the secession craved by IPOB is not the way forward either.

    To resolve the crisis, Obasanjo said there was nothing wrong with President Muhammadu Buhari meeting with Kanu.

    “I don’t see anything wrong in that [Buhari meeting with Kanu]. I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it,” Obasanjo told Newsweek.

    “I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him, people of his age, [and ask:] ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the southeast but from all parts of Nigeria.

    “We need to satisfy the youth in job creation, in wealth creation, in giving them a better, fulfilled life, in giving them hope for the future,” Obasanjo said adding that  “There’s no easy way out.”

  • Kanu’s needless lionization

    Kanu’s needless lionization

    This column has been consistent in insisting that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration should call the bluff of the leader and members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnmadi Kanu, and firmly assert its authority to defend, protect and preserve the territorial integrity of the country as the custodian of a legitimate electoral mandate until the expiration of its tenure and the next elections are held. Ever since his release from jail on bail, Kanu has violated with impunity the stringent terms he agreed to in order to regain his liberty. His incendiary rhetoric against the Nigerian state and vituperative provocations against other ethno-cultural groups in the country have only worsened to the point of delusive megalomania with the Igbo leadership elite making feeble efforts to rein him in.

    Perhaps buoyed by the godlike adoration of his apparently no less misguided and ill-informed followers, Kanu has acquired an exaggerated and inflated sense of self-importance in which he sees himself as being above the law. His photographs have been posted online seated on a monarchical ‘throne’ of dubious provenance. Pictures of his disciples scrambling to kiss his feet have gone viral on social media. If his admirers’ choose to transmogrify him into deity, it is their business and their right.  The truth, however, is that until he succeeds in actualizing the creation of his idyllic state of Biafra, Kanu is fated to live within the stipulated legal limits and boundaries of the Nigeria he contemptuously dismisses as a Zoo.

    Not only has Kanu’s IPOB vowed to prevent the governorship elections in Anambra State scheduled for November from holding, he has openly incited his members to violence against Christian leaders of Yoruba origin who dare step on Igbo soil. He has launched what he describes as a Biafra secret service. Daring the Nigerian state to re-arrest him, Kanu has called on his supporters to burn down the Nigerian ‘Zoo’ if any such attempt is made. No government will fold its arms and allow its authority and the stability of the polity under its jurisdiction to be so cavalierly and recklessly undermined. That obviously informed the decision of the Attorney General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN) to seek a court order for the re-arrest and detention of Kanu for violating his bail conditions.

    It is, however, unfortunate that rather than keep its cool and continue the process of bringing Kanu to book within the framework of the law as the AGF has so commendably begun, the Nigerian State has allowed itself to be provoked into overreacting to the sheer idiocy and buffoonery of Kanu and his supporters. I find it difficult to understand the rationale behind the ongoing show of force in the restive South-East region ominously codenamed ‘Operation Python Dance II’ by the Nigerian military.

    Yes, the armed forces have the right to undertake military exercises in any part of Nigeria in the pursuit of its constitutional responsibility to protect and defend the country’s territorial integrity and cohesion. They have a duty to demonstrate their capacity to contain and neutralize any contestants of the legitimate monopoly of the instruments and techniques of coercion within a stipulated territorial jurisdiction, which is the distinguishing characteristic of the state.

    However, has IPOB become such a potent military threat as to necessitate an exercise on the region-wide scale of ‘Operation Python Dance II’? It is doubtful. Kanu’s empty posturing and baseless boasting really constitute no more than what the late Chuba Okadigbo would readily dismiss as the ‘ranting of an ant’. He must be feeling on top of the world to have the Nigerian army taking him so seriously. IPOB ought to have been at best treated as an irritant by the Nigerian State and contemptuously left to the Nigeria Police to deal with while the professionally furtive, and thus more dangerous, secret intelligence services deploy their training in stealthy operations to insidiously penetrate, monitor and ultimately neutralize the belligerent group.

    As it is, ‘Operation Python Dance II’ has conferred on Kanu an importance and status he does not deserve. It creates the impression that Kanu’s significance encompasses the entire South-East, which it does not. Yes, his exuberant supporters may be more vocal and active than the silent majority. There is hardly proof that IPOB enjoys the support of a substantial stratum of Igbo land in the group’s quest for secession and the violent implications of its methods. Millions of enterprising Igbos not just in the South-East but across the country are working very hard daily to earn a living and many of them are doing very well against all odds. Resort to war must be the last thing on the minds of such industrious Igbos. But exercises like ‘Operation Python Dance II’ can only stir up emotions and drive otherwise indifferent and uncommitted Igbos into the welcome embrace of IPOB.

    Without meaning to disrespect the professionalism of the military high command, it is doubtful that the implications of ‘Operation Python Dance’ were rigorously thought through before the exercise was embarked upon. IPOB has naturally responded by playing the victim and underdog to whip up sentiments in its favour. It has sent unarmed hoodlums to senselessly hurl stones and other missiles at fully armed soldiers knowing well that the latter are more likely to respond disproportionately no matter their theoretical rules of engagement thus eliciting popular outrage locally and globally. On the propaganda front, Kanu’s IPOB has thoroughly outwitted the military effectively utilizing social media for the purposes of disinformation and propaganda towards the achievement of its objectives.

    In Abia state, where the military show of force was flagged off, the impending breakdown of law and order that ensued, resulting in the burning down of a police station, attacks on military posts, vandalization of a hospital, random fatal shootings by unidentified gunmen, throwing of petrol bombs, setting up of bonfires on major highways and the threat to the lives of northerners resident in the state, forced the governor, Mr. Okezie Ikpeazu, to impose a three day dusk to dawn curfew in the first instance. The deteriorating situation obviously compelled the military to accede to the withdrawal of soldiers from the streets of Aba and Umuahia even though it maintained that ‘Operation Python Dance II’ would continue across the region as planned.

    Meanwhile, the Abia state security crisis triggered a reaction in Plateau State where the state governor, Mr. Simon Lalong, on Thursday imposed a dusk to dawn curfew on the Jos metropolis following fears of possible ethnic violence by elements angry at the rumoured harassment of northerners in Abia. This demonstrates how easily combustible the entire country is at present and why wise statesmanship rather than unthinking display of brainless brawn is Nigeria’s most critical need of the moment.

    Even if ‘Operation Python Dance II’ was necessary and justifiable, was there any need for the soldiers to carry their fiery dance right on to the street where Nnamdi Kanu lives at Afara Ukwu in Abia State? This, of course, only provided IPOB with ammunition to fuel its propaganda to the disadvantage of the military. The indirect Lionization of Nnmadi Kanu through the ongoing ‘Operation Python Dance II’ is absolutely needless. Kanu and his IPOB are not synonymous with the Igbo and the South-East. If he has so brazenly violated the terms of his bail and contemptuously threatens the peace, stability and unity of the country, the IPOB leader should simply be picked up with minimum fuss and made to face the law without the current unnecessary and wasteful military razzmatazz.

    And yesterday’s purported proscription of IPOB by the South-East Governors Forum can only complicate matters and be ultimately counter-productive.

  • Military declares IPOB terrorist organisation

    Military declares IPOB terrorist organisation

    The separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is now a “militant terrorist organisation” in Nigeria, military authorities declared yesterday.

    The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said in a statement in Abuja that IPOB poses security challenge to the country by clandestinely and actively terrorising the general public.

    It listed such acts of terrorism as the formation of a Biafra Secret Service, claimed formation of Biafra National Guard, unauthorised blocking of public access roads and extortion of money from innocent civilians at illegal road blocks.

    The DHQ therefore urged parents to dissuade their wards from joining the group.

    The Director, Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen. John Enenche, who signed the statement, spoke of the determination of the Armed Forces to confront “all security challenges facing the country.”

    Enenche also pledged the continued protection of lives and property in all parts of the country by the military.

    He said: “After due professional analysis and recent developments, it has become expedient to notify the general public that the claim by IPOB actors that the organisation is non-violent is not true.

    “Hence, the need to bring to public awareness the true and current state of IPOB.

    “In this regard, some of their actions, clandestinely and actively, that have been terrorising the general public include: the formation of a Biafra Secret Service, claimed formation of Biafra National Guard, unauthorised blocking of public access roads and extortion of money from innocent civilians at illegal road blocks.

    “Militant possession and use of weapons (stones, molotov cocktails, machetes and broken bottles, among others) on a military patrol on Sept. 10, 2017.

    “Physical confrontation of troops by Nnamdi Kanu and other IPOB actors at a checkpoint on Sept. 11, 2017 and also attempt to snatch their rifles.

     ”Attack by IPOB members on a military checkpoint on Sept. 12, 2017, at Isialangwa, where one IPOB actor attempted to snatch a female soldier’s rifle.

    “From the foregoing, the Armed Forces of Nigeria wish to confirm to the general public that IPOB, from all intent, plan and purpose as analysed, is a militant terrorist organisation.”

    The Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB was previously a relatively passive organisation.

    In the last one year, however, it has become confrontational with the authorities, demanding the creation of an independent state of Biafra.

    It is also threatening to make the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State impossible.

    Kanu opted out of a peace meeting with South-East governors on the demands of his group scheduled for yesterday.

    The army, earlier in the week, deployed soldiers to the Southeast for “Operation Python Dance II” aimed at getting them ready for battle.

    The international community remains divided over a universally acceptable definition of terrorism, leaving individual countries, regional and international organisations to adopt a patchwork of approaches.

    Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011 defines ”act of terrorism” as an act which is deliberately done with malice, aforethought and which:

    (a) may seriously harm or damage a country or an international organization;

    (b) is intended or can reasonably be regarded as having been intended to—

    (i) unduly compel a government or international organisation to perform or abstain from performing any act;

    (ii) seriously intimidate a population;

    (iii) seriously destabilise or destroy the fundamental political, constitutional, economic or social structures of a country or an international organisation; or

    (iv) otherwise influence such government or international organisation by intimidation or coercion; and

    (c) involves or causes, as the case may be—

    (i) an attack upon a person’s life which may cause serious bodily harm or death;

    (ii) kidnapping of a person;

    (iii) destruction to a government or public facility, a transport system, an infrastructure facility, including an information system, a fixed platform located on the continental shelf, a public place or private property, likely to endanger human life or result in major economic loss;

    (iv) the seizure of an aircraft, ship or other means of public or goods transport and diversion or the use of such means of transportation for any of the purposes in paragraph (b)(iv) of this subsection ; *

    (v) the manufacture, possession, acquisition, transport, supply or use of weapons, explosives or of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons, as well as research into, and development of biological and chemical weapons without lawful authority;

    (vi) the release of dangerous substance or causing of fire, explosions or floods, the effect of which is to endanger human life;

    (vii) interference with or disruption of the supply of water, power or any other fundamental natural resource, the effect of which is to endanger human life;

    (d) an act or omission in or outside Nigeria which constitutes an office within the scope of a counter terrorism protocols and conventions duly ratified by Nigeria.

    (3) an act which disrupts a service but is committed in pursuance of a protest. However, demonstration or stoppage of work is not a terrorist act within the meaning of this definition provided that the act is not intended to result in any harm referred to in subsection (2) (b)(i), (ii) or (iv) of this section.

  • We’re not terrorists —IPOB

    We’re not terrorists —IPOB

    The Indigenous People of Biafra yesterday faulted its declaration by the Defence Headquarters as a terrorist organisation.

    In a phone interview with the Channels Television, the group said it is a non-violent movement and that it has never carried arms or killed anyone.

    “It is very, very laughable that that is coming from a military intelligence officer,” Prince Kanu, younger brother of the embattled leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, said.

    “One, IPOB is a non-violent movement. We do not carry arms. We’ve never asked anyone to kill for us, neither have we killed anyone.

    “If you look at our records, our records are clean and straight

    “From inception, Nnamdi Kanu made it clear to the whole world that we are non-violent freedom fighters, and that is the way it has been.”

  • Terrorist tag: UNIPORT rejects annual convention of Ohanaeze, IPOB on campus

    Terrorist tag: UNIPORT rejects annual convention of Ohanaeze, IPOB on campus

    Following the Defence Headquarters’ declaration of the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation, the authorities of Federal Government-owned University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) have kicked against hosting the annual convention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and IPOB on the campus.

    The school stated through its Deputy Registrar (Information, Publications and Public Relations), Dr. Williams Wodi, that the two groups did not apply to use the institution’s facilities before going on air to declare UNIPORT as the venue of their annual convention, declaring that the facilities would “certainly” not be available to them.

    The attacks on Northerners by protesting IPOB members in the last five days in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, bordering Abia State, led to the killing of two policemen, destruction of valuable property, injuring of many innocent people, unprovoked violence and heightened tension in the state, with Kanu’s supporters in Abia and Rivers states still poised for war over allegation of attacks by soldiers and other security personnel.

    The statement by UNIPORT said: “It has come to the notice of the authorities of the University of Port Harcourt that certain faceless individuals or groups have gone on air to announce the convening of an ‘Annual Convention,’ purportedly scheduled to hold in the university on Friday, September 29, 2017. The said announcement is being made in the name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Indigenous People of Biafra.

    “For the avoidance of doubt, the authorities of the university wish to state quite categorically that no individuals or groups had applied for permission to use any of the facilities for purposes of holding the purported ‘Annual Convention,’ as the announcements in the electronic media appear to indicate to unsuspecting members of the general public.

    “We further wish to state that individuals or groups are not authorised to make use of facilities in the University of Port Harcourt without first applying and obtaining permission to do so.

    “The general public is, therefore, advised to discountenance the ongoing announcements for whatever intent or purpose they were meant to serve.

    “The faceless elements behind such embarrassing announcements are totally unknown to the authorities of the university and have absolutely no permission to hold such an event on our campus.

    “The facilities of the university are certainly NOT available for the purpose stated in the said announcements.

    “Even if the organisers/announcers have an intention to gather in the University of Port Harcourt, it remains a mere intention that cannot be actualised without the express permission of the authorities of the university.

    “It is our hope that those making the post-haste announcements have no plans to drag the University of Port Harcourt into any controversy that is capable of distracting it from its core mandate of research, teaching and public service.”

    It will be recalled that the heightened tension in Rivers State made Governor Nyesom Wike to yesterday morning make a state broadcast in which he declared that the Rivers State Government would not tolerate any attack on other Nigerians living in the state by members of IPOB or any other group, stressing that the state belongs to all those who live in it, with Rivers heartily welcoming any Nigerian who resides in the state and carries our his/her lawful businesses.

    IPOB: Obasanjo backs Buhari meeting with Kanu

    Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has endorsed a possible meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and leader of the Indigenous People of Biaria (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

    He gave this indication in an interview with Newsweek magazine published in the United States.

    “I don’t see anything wrong in that [Buhari meeting with Kanu]. I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it,” Obasanjo said in response to a question on the agitation for Biafra that has become violent with the military called in to quell the situation.

    “I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him, people of his age, [and ask:] ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the southeast but from all parts of Nigeria.”

    Obasanjo said  that the response of the army response to the pro-Biafra sentiment is “not the solution,” but adds that the secession craved by IPOB is not the way forward either.

    Obasanjo said Nigeria must avoid allowing the current tensions to escalate into another conflict..

    “Those who fought in the war in Biafra will not want to fight any other war,” he said. “I have fought one war too many in Nigeria; I don’t want to see another.”

  • IPOB: Wike condemns attacks on non Rivers indigenes

    IPOB: Wike condemns attacks on non Rivers indigenes

    Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Friday said his administration would not tolerate any attack on non-indigenes in the state.

    Wike gave the warning in Port Harcourt in a state-wide broadcast to the people of the state.

    ‘’The state government will not tolerate any attack on other Nigerians living in the state by members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) or any other group,’’ he said.

    The governor said that the state belonged to all residents and those doing legal businesses in it.

    ‘’The state heartily welcomes any Nigerian who resides in the state and carries out his or her lawful businesses,’’ the governor said.

    He said that the deliberate sabotage of the state’s security architecture by men of the Rivers Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) was condemnable.

    Wike said that the state government was deeply concerned with the recent activities of IPOB in Rivers.

    The governor said that his administration was particularly worried by the attack on some Nigerian citizens living in the state.

    “Rivers people fully subscribe to Nigeria’s corporate existence and its indivisibility, as a people we shall continue to support the unity and peaceful co-existence of all ethnic nationalities,’’ he said.

    He said that the people of the state would continue to work towards actualizing the collective aspirations for a just, inclusive and progressive Nigeria.

    “We shall not tolerate any attack by any group on other Nigerians living in Oyigbo or any other part of the state,” Wike said.

    He warned troublemakers, who were bent on causing violence in the state, to steer clear of Rivers’ territory.

    ‘’ Nobody should take our hospitality and peaceful disposition for weakness as we are capable of dealing decisively with any situation that threatens peace and serenity in the state,” he said.

    The governor urged Rivers’ people to be vigilant and desist from being used by anybody to foment trouble in Rivers.

    ‘’Do not hesitate to report any suspicious character or movements around your vicinity to the law enforcement agencies for immediate action,’’ he said.

    Wike said that dialogue and not violence remained the best way to resolve contending political issues in the country.

    He called on the Federal Government to initiate meaningful national dialogue to peacefully resolve the structural challenges threatening Nigeria’s stability and progress.

    “In the same vein, we urge the security agencies to exercise maximum restraint and conform to international rules of engagement and best practice, while responding to provocative acts from ill-advised groups.”

    The governor said that his administration had been receiving reports from traumatized victims who had been robbed of their valuables by SARS Operatives under the guise of conducting searches.

    “They employ several malevolent methods including planting illicit drugs on their unsuspecting victims as bargaining chip or forcefully taking them to ATM boots to collect specified amount of money as ransom for their freedom,’’ he said.
