My plan for Edo, by Irabor

Casely Omon-Irabor, a lawyer and human right activist, is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo State. In this interview with Osagie Otabor, he explain

Why did you choose to contest on the platform of the APC?

The APC is a merger party of all progressives. I am a progressive. I contested for the Senate under the CPP in the last general election. I decided to contest now because there is a vacuum in leadership in Edo State and people are wondering how to get the best of leadership. We had thought as at 2008 and 2009, we are going to use Edo as an experimental state because we have an activist who is the comrade governor and we thought we had an Obama of Nigeria. In the first tenure, he tried a little, in the second tenure, there was nothing to write home about.

Why do you work. you are the right person to provide the leadership?

What motivated me is that I heard from God. I am not a conventional politician. I veered into politics because our mentor, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, told us to step into governance. He said the time has come to revolutionise politics and for us to practice what we preach. I am in politics not because I want to be known. I am already well known all over the world. I am Under Secretary United Nations Human Rights. There is gap to be filled in Edo State. If you look around the state, there is no single Edo man that is happy. 90 percent of the people are suffering. People believe we can sit down and rely on allocation from Abuja. Our IGR is not known. We have enough resources to harness in this state. Edo state is bigger than many countries.

What are your plans for the state?

I will focus on agriculture. I have gone round the state and I know how to harness the resources. Every parts of the state will be harnessed. We will not leave Okpella limestone for Dangote alone. There are other things to get from limestone. There will be mechanized farming. I grew from suffering, lack and it propelled me to succeed. Go to Ugbegun, Igeuben where they grow yam. What they earn will not uplift them. I will give grants and not loans to farmers. Farmers in the state are underfed. Many of the farmers go to farm half naked. When I was contesting for the senate, in some villages, you see people looking like madmen. They are farmers in this 21st century. Can we not change their orientation? Can they not wear good clothes to the farm? We will lift farmers from suffering. I will refocus furniture making in the state and stop exporting our wood. I do not need to have billions to win the elections. If the governor like, let him give Godwin big money, Godwin cannot win elections in this state. He does not look like who wants to be a governor.

Are you worried about your opponents especially when there is alleged preferred aspirant?

Why is Oshiomhole afraid of who will succeed him. I will not look back and probe. I will match on. If I say I want to open books on Oshiomhole, what will I ask Igbinedion, Osunbor and the military men. I will not look back. I don’t have time to look into the past, I will look forward on how to grow Palm oil plantations. I will ensure we harness what we have.

Do you have the cash to woo delegates?

You will not see crowd here in my campaign office. When they come, they will be singing priases that I will not die but I told them not to kill themselves for me. I urged them to go and vote for me. They will praise you but if no money, they will say you are not prepared. Many of them are not delegates and they want me to give them money. Where do I get money to give them? There is no way I would be sincere in office if I gave all the money to win an election. You cannot see me giving delegates money. I am worth about N12m but I will not give anybody money. I am asking them to allow me show them the road so that they can see, they are asking for money. I am not going to bribe any delegate. I am aware of the rigging process already in place. All the party machinery are in the hands of Oshiomhole. They hold meetings everyday and Oshiomhole gives them money. If the expression of interest form and nomination forms is high than what they sold in other states, we will go to court. If on that day, we see how the election go, we will do certain things drastic. I have the means to some things. I want to use my power of connection to improve my state and not to destroy it. I want to improve on my state. I will not sponsor violence. Anything can happen and anybody can become governor.

What about the nomination forms? At what price do you think it would be okay for you and other aspirants?

From the level of the aspirant, I do not see any aspirant that cannot purchase the form. If they said the form is above the normal price, then there will be no primaries. Oshiomhole should do the right things. He should not do anything funny. There might be compromise and horse trading. I will not bow to anybody to get the party’s ticket. People bow down to a reigning king and not a coming one. I will not be coerced not to buy the nomination form then I would have betrayed all my supporters and confidants. What about God that woke me up and asked me to go and contest. He is behind me. He called me to go and contest the election.

How did God tell you to contest?

When I came out from detention in 2012 after I was arrested and humiliated in Delta State during the administration of Uduaghan, I became like a church rat. I had only one car left. I still remained functional and we were managing to feed and pay the children school fees. It was in that condition, I heard a voice calling me asking me to go and contest. I told my wife and she queried where I would get the money. After my wife confirmed it, I decided to contest the senatorial election. I didn’t want to join the PDP and the APC was a merger of strange bed fellows. I decided to contest under the CPP. People contributed money and we used it for logistics but I did not give bribe to anybody. I came out third. I had the credible and quality votes while they had quantity votes. We were talking of who would go to the Senate to make laws, they decided to choose a tailor and contractor over a vocal lawyer. Our people sent a contractor to the senate when they have an international lawyer because of money.

    s his mission in politics.

  • Ex LMC boss, Irabor beats Odegbami, Keshi to Excellence Award

Pioneer Chairman of  the Board of the League Management Company (LMC), Hon. Nduka Irabor was last night honoured as the Sports Personality of the Year at the Excellence Recognition Awards organised by Global Excellence magazine, a leading entertainment and lifestyle publication.

Irabor beat off competition from two former Super Eagles captains, Segun Odegbami and Stephen Keshi who were nominated for the awards. Keshi was the Super Eagles coach to the World Cup in Brazil 2014 and failed to qualify the country for the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

According to the organisers in the citation read before the presentation of the award plaque, “Hon Irabor’s was the overwhelming choice of the award’s panel for his contributions to the reform of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) which has resulted to improved credibility, increased earning for clubs and acceptable results”.

The citation also attributed the successes of the league reforms to the former LMC Chairman’s leadership style which demonstrates a relentless pursuit of excellence that sometimes may not be agreeable to some but always achieving desirable outcome. Irabor’s contributions to journalism as the pioneer editor of the Guardian Express and his performance as a spokesperson for the Federal Government were tracked in illustrating his persistent pursuit of excellence.

In his response, Irabor who was represented on the occasion by the LMC Head of Special Projects, Harry Iwuala thanked the organisers for the recognition and attributed the success to the collective effort of the LMC Board.

“I want to first thank the organisers for recognising that there has been reforms which has improved the league. Indeed this award is a testimony to the fact that when you perform well, Nigerians will recognise your effort.

“We worked as a team to make the league what you have come to commend and we are conscious of the fact that it is not yet a finished product. We are proud of what we have done but it is still work in progress. We will continue to give it our best and believe that with the concerted effort of all Nigerians, we will bequeath a viable league that will provide more job opportunities and enhanced living,” he said.

    Irabor happy with clubs

Chairman of the League Management Company(LMC) Nduka Irabor, has expressed surprise at the number of clubs that complied with the minimum registration requirements for the 2013/14 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Two NPFL clubs, Giwa FC and Nembe City, were initially dropped from the 2013/14 NPFL season after failing to substantially comply with the minimum registration requirements.

The two clubs have since been re-admitted but Irabor said he expected more clubs to fail to comply with the requirements before the commencement of the 2013/14 season.

“I was impressed with the response we got from the clubs because, to be honest, I expected fewer than 10 clubs to make it.

“There was a time when we felt that only six teams would compete in the league but by the time we were ready to kick off, we had 18 teams, which was highly commendable,” Irabor told supersport.com from Maryland, United States, on Wednesday.

The LMC chief added that the league’s organising body “did nothing new” but only enforced what the clubs “were not used to in the past.”

“We did nothing new this season. We only enforced the laws that had always been in place. This is what the clubs were not used to in the past.

“We did not introduce any new rules. These (regulations) had always been there in the books but no one was adhering to them.

“We just had to force the clubs to do what had to be done. This season was for compliance. Issues of licensing are confidential,” he said.

  • 2013/14 Glo League Season: LMC to fix kick-off date

2013/14 Glo League Season: LMC to fix kick-off date

A new kick-off date for the 2013/14 Glo Premier League season is being worked out by the League Management Company (LMC) to among several other reasons see through the implementation of the Club Licensing Regulation as directed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Clubs in member federations that fail to meet the December 31, 2013 compliance deadline will not be allowed to play in any of the lucrative and prestigious continental competitions.

Chairman of LMC, Hon. Nduka Irabor said a definitive date for the new season kick-off will be announced by Wednesday, October 30 and explained that the intervening period will be used to “address the more urgent task” of meeting CAF Club Licensing criteria.

“In order to meet the CAF deadline and ensure that our clubs participate in the 2014 CAF club competitions, we have had to set in motion the process for the implementation of the mandatory Club Licensing and this process will start on Wednesday in Abuja with a consultative meeting of the LMC and the clubs.

“While we work at re-jigging the schedules for the next season to finish before the World Cup, we will also look at options that will at least ensure that our calendar is in sync with the global football leagues’ calendar,” stated Irabor.

The League calendar was distorted by disruptions in the 2011/12 season which culminated in the delayed kick-off of the 2012/13 season and to normalize the calendar, the LMC had to run a very tasking schedule that ensured that the season was concluded only last Sunday, October 20.

“The LMC recognizes the challenges the tight fixtures we ran in the just ended season imposed on the clubs but we must also admit that it was mitigated by the unfortunate early exit of our clubs from continental championships hence we didn’t suffer backlog of games when the season was to end. This time, we may not have that luxury of time especially if our clubs do well and given the various national engagements such as CAF Nations Cup Championship beginning next January 11 which will be dominated by players from premier league clubs,” advanced the LMC Chairman.

The LMC disclosed that all pre-season activities, including the prestigious round robin tournament for the top four Glo Premier League club (Super 4) and a planned medical and ethics orientation for club managers will be implemented in full.

“We want to make sure that our sponsors and potential sponsors are availed of the opportunities to tap into the business framework presented by these activities and the coming season,” Irabor noted.

He said the LMC has taken cognizance of the participation of two clubs from the Glo Premier League in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Super Cup holding in Warri, Delta State on November 27 and the need to allow LMC directors participate fully in its first involvement in the Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation which will be heralded by the Super Cup between Enyimba International and Kano Pillars.

    • Clubs need N300m to participate

Clubs will need to provide a N300million guarantee to participate in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) when the League Management Company (LMC) completes the process of fashioning out an ideal league for the country.

Chairman of the Interim Management Committee now upgraded to League Management Company, (LMC) Hon. Nduka Irabor, who revealed this at a media round table held yesterday at the National Stadium, Lagos, also put the worth of the Nigerian league at N3billion.

“I am not looking for a job neither am I looking for an appointment. Everything we are doing is all aimed at repositioning the league for the good of all. When we finish, clubs would need to guarantee N300million to be able to participate in the kind of league we evisage for the country,” he said.

Irabor, who described the state of the league prior to the new attempt at giving it a new direction as disgraceful, said it would be out of place to have a league that is neither enterprising nor beneficial to players and soccer lovers alike.

“We do not need a league where players are not paid, where clubs are unable to honour their matches, where results cannot be trusted because referees get payment from clubs, among other vices,” he added.

On the rational behind changing the interim body to a limited liability company, the former media guru, said it became glaring from the level of anomalies on ground that the league can neither move forward nor do business with serious-minded outfits.

“Nobody was ready to do business with the Nigeria football league. Those who wanted to be partners in progress wanted a company they could trust, so there was need to provide a new platform that can help the committee achieve the needed goal,” Irabor submitted.
