PDP is irresponsible for opposing Card Reader – Osinbajo

It is irresponsible for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to oppose the use of card readers for the coming general election, Prof Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday..

The vice presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) wondered why the ruling is afraid to support the use of electronic device that would give credibility to the electoral process, saying the PDP was jittery of its imminent loss.

Osinbajo spoke at the presentation of a book entitled: For The Love of Their Nation: Lawyers as Agents of Change in Nigeria, written by former Judiciary Editor of the Guardian, Kunle Ogunsakin, at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja.

He said: “It is a big surprise to everybody watching political events that the PDP that approved the card reader for the election suddenly finds something seriously wrong with the device. The card reader is to ensure that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are not fake. It would be irresponsible for any political party to oppose the use of gadgets that would give credibility to electoral process. It sounds strange when the main political party says don’t let us authenticate the PVCs.”

He added: “There is a lot of impunity in the country. Many people are losing faith in the ability of administration of justice system and indeed, the government to observe the tenet of the rule of law. We must return to observance of the rule of law and to holding government and its officials accountable for what they do. That can only come from exemplary leadership.”

Osinbajo said lack of accountability explained why the Federal Government could not account for billions lost when oil price was at $130. He noted that Saudi Arabia saved $750 billion in the period of increased oil sale, adding that Nigeria’s foreign reserve did not rise.

He said corruption must be stopped for the nation to make meaningful progress, noting that the book asked thought-provoking question about engendering accountability and justice in the country.

The book reviewer, Mr Dele Adesina, SAN, described the book as a “literary work of great significance”, noting the author’s knowledge of justice system made him an authority even though he is not a lawyer.

In a similar vein,  Osinbajo, has called on christian community to support all genuine efforts towards checking corruption in the country.

Osinbajo who bemoaned the deep and widespread corruption in Nigeria, said his nomination to pair with Buhari for March 28 Presidential race  was parts of God’s plan to salvage the country.

The former Attorney – General and Commissioner of Justice, Lagos state, made the call on  yesterdayat Idiroko area of Ogun State while addressing a monthly meeting of the state state chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN).

According to him, he had notified the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian. Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye as well as his wife before accepting the nomination to run for vice presidential race.

  • My husband is irresponsible, alleges athlete

A 32-year-old athlete, Mrs Pauline Ukah, has sought the dissolution of her marriage of nine years to her husband, Ukah Charles, before the Customary Court, Alagbado, a Lagos suburb, over his alleged irresponsible attitude.

She also accused her husband of forcefully taking away their only son under the pretext of taking him to his hometown.

Mrs Ukah told the court: “Four days after our wedding, my husband started attacking me physically. For the next five years, I endured the pain, thinking he would begin to treat me as his true love. Even when my husband got a job, he still didn’t make any meaningful contribution to our upkeep. I had to obtain a loan to complete our house. I have been solely responsible for the upkeep of our children. Most of the time, I would go on commercial motorbike from Lagos Island where I work to Meiran. But rather than empathise with me, my husband would lock the door against me, thereby making me to enter the room through the window.

“Sometime ago, when I was duped N5 million by some con men who wanted to help us obtain U.S visa, my husband labelled me a prostitute. On that day, they asked us to put all our money and jewelry inside a box and we complied. But that was the last we heard of them.”

Mrs Ukah complianed that her husband was fond of charms. Till date, I don’t know why he buried his singlet in the house. When my husband was under some spiritual attacks and all he could see were reptiles, I stood by him. I took him to a hospital and footed the medical bills.”

Ukah, however, said: “Almost everything she said is true. She has been a caring wife and mother. But there is no cordial relationship with my in-laws. Since I lost my job, life has been tough.

“Contrary to her claim, I don’t beat her. We only have misunderstanding once in a while. Each time I intend to pick our children for holidays, her mother chases me with a cutlass.”

“It is a taboo in my tribe for a woman who commits adultery to still sleep with her husband again. My wife once confessed to having slept with a man who wanted to help us obtain the U.S. visa.

“It was at a family meeting that they ordered me to take our only son to our home town for cleansing and I did. If only my wife can cleanse herself, she can have our son back,” Ukah told the court.

Obviously miffed, Mrs. Ukah reacted, saying: “My husband was given four days to take our son for cleansing in his home town. It is almost a month, but my husband has not brought him back. Now, I am agitated because the boy has always been in my custody. It’s been three years since we lived as a couple. I was told to cleanse myself if I was still interested in being his wife. Since my son has been cleansed, there shouldn’t be a problem. I have never fought him over any trivial issue. I always make my intentions known to him. God knows I am fed up; so, I want a divorce. He is free to see our three children whenever he wishes.”

The court’s President, Mr .Olubode Sekoni, fixed a chamber interview for the couple and ordered them to bring four relations each.

He adjourned the matter till today.

  • My husband is irresponsible, aggressive says wife

A 24-year-old woman, Mary Eze, is seeking the dissolution of her 10-year old marriage with Chigozie Eze, at the Customary Court in Alagbado, a Lagos suburb.

The marriage has produced three children: Blessing (5), Favour (4) and Peace (2).

Mrs Eze alleged that her husband destroyed her property, beat up her siblings and seized their children with the intention of taking them to his hometown.

She said:  “Why should I inform a man who doesn’t feed me about my movement? I don’t have any source of income, but he accuses me of spending money on men. He receives my phone calls without my consent. It has been three months since we spoke to each other. He destroys anything he sees in my possession. He threatened to eject me from our home, claiming that I belong to the streets. When he knew I informed a third party about our misunderstanding, he sent me out of our home because he had warned me against it. I have been sleeping under different roofs because of my ‘bad boy’ husband. He is irresponsible. I hawk meat in neighbouring streets to pay my children’s school fees. But he has never asked how or where I got the money from. He once stripped my elder sister and beat her up because she took me in. He doesn’t respect my folks at all. So, I want my children because they are my priority.”

Her husband broke down in tears in court, saying he was tired with his wife’s lifestyle.

Eze said: “I am tired of my absentee wife. She is fond of moving out at odd hours. Whenever I complain, she will attempt to hit me. Surprisingly, when I informed my mother-in-law about my wife’s suspicious movements, she slapped me, saying my wife would go after other men if I continued to be jealous. In truth, I slapped her back because I did not deserve such awful treatment from her. Our third child was only three months old when my wife left with another man for eight months. I was then forced to play the role of a nanny. My landlord could not eject me when my house rent was due because I was literally handicapped within that period. It is sad because her siblings see no harm in all her deeds.

“My wife came back claiming to have turned a new leaf. So, I took her back because I still loved her. Few weeks after, my wife’s attitude got worse. She started keeping her phone in her pants and was dressing in skimpy clothes at night, pretending to be asleep. We sleep in the same bedroom, but she is always missing in the middle of the night. My wife and her sisters are popular prostitutes at Katangowa Market. Knowing my wife sleeps on the road with other men makes me sad. She hawked for only two weeks and that was the only moment she fed me with her money. I am also tired of her movements, but I love her. I am not ready for any separation. If she continues with this lifestyle, it may affect our children. It is almost one month since my wife left home, abandoning the children to me. I need help”.

The court’s President, Mr Olubode Sekoni, fixed a chamber interview for the couple and ordered them to bring four relations each and adjourned the matter till September 11.

It’s a very irresponsible conduct, says  Fashola

Governor  Babatunde Fashola  took  exception to the soldiers’ violence. He was disappointed that the soldiers who are paid from  public funds   could descend on buses that Lagosians are already complaining are inadequate to meet their  transportation needs.

The state Government,he said ,only recently  completed the rehabilitation of a  police barracks destroyed by soldiers in 2006. He said he would wait for formal report from the Brigade Commander  to enable the state government  take a decision on the development.

He said:”there is an allegation that someone who was not supposed to be on the BRT route was on it. As far I know, if something happens to you while you are conducting an unlawful act it is  a criminal offence.

“ But it is really disappointing  that public servants, and that is what soldiers are, paid with tax payer’s money, will act in a manner that is being  suggested.

“I am waiting for the  official report to let me know who played what role and what happened. And whether the Brigade Commander has been able to identify the people who committed the offence. If it turns out to be true, it will be a very irresponsible conduct, to put it very mildly.

“In 2006  soldiers stormed   the Area C Police Station. We have just managed to reconstruct it. If buses that citizens are complaining are  not enough are set ablaze, I do not know how setting ablaze buses recompense any injury that one may have suffered. I do not know how damaging public property is the restitution for  any injury that may have come. For now, the only thing that I can say to you is that when I get the full fact, I will address the residents, to let them know what happened and what the state action will be.

“I have been in touch with the Brigade commander, who assured  me  that he was managing the situation. Nothing I have here is verified, I am waiting for a  formal report before we can ventilate a position”.

    ‘Mission schools’ take-over was irresponsible’

Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has urged state governments that have returned schools to mission owners to rebuild them.

The governor noted that their takeover was an irresponsible act that destroyed the school system.

Obi spoke at All Saints Cathedral Egbu, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, at the second session of the sixth Synod of the Diocese of Egbu.

The governor hailed the Imo State Government for appreciating the wisdom and need to return the schools to the church.

He urged the Imo State Government to rebuild the schools to redress the effects of decades of neglect on them.

Obi noted that the takeover after the Civil War led to the collapse of education and an upsurge in crime and other anti-social activities.

The governor said his administration would correct the anormally.

Obi explained that he spent the day with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in resettlement camps to mark the posthumous birthday of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, in line with the belief and conviction of the late Igbo leader.

The governor noted that the late Odumegwu-Ojukwu was interested in the welfare of the masses and the under-privilege.

The Chancellor of the Diocese, Justice Benjamin Njemanze, expressed that the governor always identified with the church.

He said the governor’s support has led to the growth of the church.

The cleric said the Obi administration is a good example of how government and the church should collaborate for the good of the society.

  • Kwara PDP, govt shameless, irresponsible, says ACN

The Kwara State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to bury its head in shame and be remorseful for the “failures and irresponsibility” of its government, rather than busy itself attacking the opposition.

The party was reacting to a statement by the Kwara PDP Publicity Secretary, Masiud Adebimpe, who claimed that ACN’s defeat in Ondo State is a sign that the party stands rejected in the Southwest and Kwara State.

ACN’s Chairman in Kwara State, Mr. Kayode Olawepo, said in a statement in Ilorin that the PDP ought to be bothered by the ineptitude and failures of its administration as shown in the protest against its land policy and inability to pay workers for three months.

The statement reads: “Months after shouting itself hoarse that the opposition does not exist in Kwara State, we are glad that finally Kwara PDP can no longer issue a statement without acknowledging in principle the threat we pose to their government built around a political ideology representing underdevelopment, poverty, deceit, oppression and corruption.

“As the PDP was issuing its baseless statement, the suffering council workers have declared an indefinite strike to protest the non-payment of their salaries for three months.

“While Kwara workers are groaning under excruciating poverty and denial arising from the non-payment of their salaries, the PDP, rather than bury its head in shame over the failures of its administration, still finds time to attack the opposition in the guise of congratulating Ondo Governor-elect Olusegun Mimiko whose opponents incidentally include PDP’s former legal adviser, Olusola Oke, who, typical of the lawless nature of the PDP, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday roaming the streets against the restriction order.

“We leave the public to judge who is being rejected by the Kwara people between the ACN and the PDP whose government has recorded uprising against its policies and is on record to expose the state to national disgrace almost on a monthly basis; from a laughable oil discovery claim to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) blacklist, burglary in the state’s Ministry of Finance and theft of documents relating to the issues over which its leadership is being investigated, and of course, incessant workers’ protests over non-payment of salary, etc. As we speak, Kwara local government workers have embarked on an indefinite strike because the government has continued to invent lies to deny workers their entitlements.”
