  • JAMB screens 37, 062 police applicants in 156 CBT centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Friday screened about 37,062 applicants shortlisted nationwide for police recruitment exercise.

The screening was done across 156 Computer Based Test Centres (CBT) and administered by JAMB.

About 133,324 applicants applied for the vacant positions but only 6,000 successful candidates are expected to be recruited at the end of the exercise.

Successful applicants are expected to proceed to Police training colleges, after which they would be integrated into the Nigeria Police Force.

Head of Training, Force Headquarters, Mr Istifanus Shettima, who monitored the screening exercise in Abuja in the company of the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said JAMB was involved in the exercise to ensure transparency and credibility of the selection process.

Shettima, who is also an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), said the target of the Police is to recruit officers with excellent standard through JAMB processes.

“We want to maintain standard in the Nigeria Police Force that is why we brought JAMB in. We know JAMB has been very excellent in conducting exams. We want excellent people to join the police force,” he said.

Prof. Oloyede commended the Force for enlisting the board to handle its recruitment exercise.

He said the board was not sure if the Police Force would comply with its rules and regulations when it first approached them with the offer to screen its applicants.

The JAMB registrar vowed that the board would continue to maintain standard while ensuring that all its screening exercises remained transparent.

“I must congratulate the Nigerian Police Force because when they came we were not sure but they complied with all the agreement about setting the standard and ensuring that there will be no waiver at any point of the exercise.

“We have agencies who believe in us and they patronize us, particularly those who want to do things transparently”.

“But if you don’t want to do something that is not transparent, JAMB is not the right place to go.

“If you know that you want to set the rules and you want the rules to be enforced, and transparently so, JAMB offers a service at a cost that you cannot get elsewhere because we are using already established public service facility.

“All we ensure is that there must be set standard, and the set standard must be enforced,” Prof. Oloyede said.

UTME 2018: Candidates call for transparency in admission process

A typical Computer-Based Test ( CBT ) centre for the Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination ( UTME ) scheduled to begin on Friday, March 9 nationwide.

Some Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination ( UTME ) candidates in FCT are optimistic that the 2018 exercise would end in their favour, having prepared well ahead.

The candidates, who spoke in separate interviews with our reporter at a Computer Based Test ( CBT ) centre on Thursday in Bwari, Abuja, also called for transparency in the admission process.

Our reporter, reports that many of the candidates, who seem fully prepared for the examinations, are determined to gain admissions into their various higher institutions of choice.

The computer-based testing ( CBT ) examination is scheduled to hold between Friday, March 9 and Monday, March 19 nationwide.

Lucy Ibrahim, one of the candidates, told our reporter,  that she was writing the examinations for the second time, adding that her level of optimism remained unshaken.

According to her, it is not the scores that concern her but the struggle for admission into her university of choice.

“I scored 231 last year but I believe that I will score higher this time.

“But my prayer is for my school of choice to admit me this year.

“I am from Kaduna and I applied for Mass Communication in ABU.

“I just hope that the process is transparent and fair, so that a good percentage of us can get the admission this year,’’ Ibrahim said.

Similarly, Chibuke Okafor, another candidate told our reporter,  that his level of preparedness was high enough to give him the score he needed to make his admission dream come true.

He, however, alleged that the entire admission process was discouraging and fraught with corruption.

According to him, the level of corruption in some schools would not allow fairness in the entire admission process.

Okafor said that with the new cut-off mark of 120, some schools would still frustrate the system by making it difficult for many eligible candidates.

A candidate, Patrick Adamu, prayed for the exercise to be hitch-free, especially from network disruption.

He also wished that the exercise begin on schedule

Another candidate, Mercy Obi, who commended the JAMB for introducing innovations to enhance the system, urged various schools to emulate the board’s desire to make things easier for candidates.

She said: “Most times, you find out that the challenges that come up are not from JAMB but from schools.

“This is because when JAMB gives admission to a candidate, the school may likely not admit such candidate, even if you meet up all requirements.

“Some of us, who have no one to fight for us or money to spend to gain admission, will continue to write until luck finally shines on us’’.

Our reporter,  recalls that JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, recently reiterated the board’s commitment towards improving the efficiency of its services to curb all forms of malpractice.

Oloyede said that the Central Admissions Processing System ( CAPS ), which is the automated admission platform, would provide candidates with the opportunity to track their admissions.

According to the registrar, the system ensures strict adherence to admission guidelines, thereby creating equity and fairness in the process.

He said this was responsible for timely completion of the 2017 admission.

JAMB to parents: Stay away from our exam centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has advised parents to stay away from its examination centres during the conduct of this year’s unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME).

JAMB registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede explained that some parents may connive with examination officials to cheat during the UTME.

He said this after monitoring the conduct of the board’s mock examination at its CBT centre in Kogo and Veritas university, on Monday, in Abuja.

The registrar said about 211,000 candidates wrote the mock in some select computer based test centres.

Prof. Oloyede said: “We urge the parents to keep away. You can see around here there are parents and I ask myself don’t they have some other things to do? We are not in a Kindgertaen School, you are preparing people for university education. And the parents come too much around, they want their children, their wards to pass at all cost.

“It is not helpful, because these candidates will you follow them to the classroom? Lecturers and others will start taking undue advantage of them because they are not matured, they are not prepared for the task. I think parents should stay clear and allow the children to grow.”

The registrar also advised candidates against cheating during the examination.

According to him, the board would monitor the system of every candidate to make sure they do not cheat

He added that all electronic devices like phones, wristwatches, calculators and special eye glasses, biros, and others remained banned from the examination hall.

The prohibition of the above listed materials and other rules, he explained, are applicable to not only the candidates but to the supervisors and examiners.

“We urge the students to desist from any form of malpractices or short cuts to pass the examination.

“You are aware that we have banned some items from going into the examination hall, special glasses, wristwatches and many other things that we are aware our candidates are using to do some illicit activities.

“As many of the candidates are getting cleverer, the board is getting wiser. We have done everything possible to avoid the issue of log out. When a student sees that the questions are difficult, he plays some pranks, remove some wires, pull out the cable, then there is problem. We are monitoring every system now and when we discover that it is at your instance. You will carry your cross,” he added.

UTME registration ends February 6 – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) has fixed February 6 as deadline for the sale of registration form for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination ( UTME ).

JAMB registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, stated this at a meeting on strategic planning, supervision and evaluation of the conduct of UTME in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He said only 283,319 candidates had so far registered for the examination out of the two million expected candidates.

The Board also fixed March 9 to 17 for the conduct of the UTME in 620 computer based test centres across the country.

Oloyede said: “Because of the criticisms that trailed the sale of entry form for a month in the past years, the Board has decided to earmark two months so that every willing candidate will be able to purchase, fill and submit the forms.

“We opened entry from December 6, 2017 to February 6, 2018, but one month later, only less than a quarter of the two million candidates expected for the examination this year have registered.”

He said the JAMB mock examination earlier slated for January 22 would now hold in first week of February.

JAMB begins construction of 500-seat CBT centre in Benin

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) 500-seat Computer-Based Test ( CBT ) Centre in Benin.

The governor said at the event that centre would add to the state’s education industry.

He said that the state had been known for hosting Federal Government institutions and, thus, its decision to partner with JAMB to have the centre in the state.

“We saw it as our responsibility to our people and the Federal Government to have a South-South Zonal Office and a CBT Centre in the state and we had to do all within our means to get a land for the project,” he said.

The governor gave assurance of power supply to the centre and construction of access roads to the centre in 2018.

He commended the Federal Government for releasing funds for the project, and hailed JAMB for introducing CBT which, he said, had helped to reduce examination malpractice.

Responding, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, commended Obaseki for promptly securing a parcel of land for the centre.

Oloyede said that JAMB decided to have a CBT centre in Benin in view of the growing number of candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in the state capital.

“Benin is the seventh in terms of JAMB examination enrolment and 22nd in terms of facilities available for candidates to sit for the examination.

“To solve the facilities need in the state, the Federal Government, is building this CBT Centre in the state,” he said.

The registrar gave assurance of more working ties with the governor who, he said, had much zeal to meet the education needs of Edo people.

Other dignitaries at the event include the Registrar of NABTEB, Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Benin, Prof, Pius Iribhogbe, and the state Commissioner for Education, Dr Christopher Adesotu.

  • NANS applauds JAMB over N5bn remittance to FG

NANS applauds JAMB over N5bn remittance to FG

The National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ) has commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) for remitting the sum of N5 billion to the coffers of the Federal Government.

NANS’ President, Mr Chinonso Obasi, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said such remittance from JAMB within a short period under the leadership of Prof. Is-haq Oloyede showed a great deal of probity.

Obasi said that he was in support of the Federal Government’s move to probe the former administrations of JAMB and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency ( NIMASA ).

He urged the Federal Government to extend the probe to other agencies.

The Federal Executive Council, FEC, presided by President Muhammadu Buhari recently ordered the probe of past heads of JAMB and NIMASA over poor remittances in the past.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, told the FEC that JAMB for the first time remitted N5 billion to the government with a balance of N3 billion still to be remitted.

She said it was a big difference when compared to maximum N3 million per annum remitted in the past.

Obasi said that the remittance of such amount from a non-focal revenue generating agency of government underscored the importance of transparency in the administration and management of government business.

“The development is highly commendable and all heads of Federal Government agencies and parastatals should emulate the registrar of JAMB.

“I urge President Buhari to beam his eagle eyes on all other agencies of the Federal Government to ensure that all loopholes that encourage corrupt practices are prevented and blocked.

“Corruption is evil and the worst thing that can happen to a country in dire need of financial resources for development.

“I wonder why any right thinking person would choose to abuse public trust bestowed on him by engaging in corrupt practices, stealing public funds that can used in addressing other development challenges,’’ he said.

Obasi called on Nigerians occupying public offices to endeavour to be responsible and patriotic in the management of government businesses.

He reiterated his call for the inclusion of the association in anti-corruption fight in order to stamp out the scourge and channel resources to critical needs of national development.

He said that the association would reach out to Federal Government agencies with a view to fostering interaction and building leadership capacity for Nigerian students.

  • Imo students top JAMB application list in 2017

Imo students top JAMB application list in 2017

For the second year running, Imo topped the number of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) applications with 101, 868 in 2017, JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede has disclosed.

The registrar said this during a briefing with reporters on Tuesday in Abuja ahead of the unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME) billed to start on Saturday in 642 computer based test (CBT) centres across the country.

According to him, Imo, Osun, and Oyo topped the list of those with the highest number of JAMB applications in 2017, following the applications of statistics by the state of origin.

Oloyede said Osun recorded the second highest with 88, 653 applications while Oyo recorded 87,811 applications.

The JAMB registrar said that Benue (68, 916), Kogi (70, 150) and Kano (70, 276) recorded the lowest applications.

He added that the agency registered 1.7 million candidates an increase of 464,287 candidates from last year’s 1.2 million candidates registered for the 2016 UTME,

Oloyede said: “As we set for the 2017 exercise, we have expanded on almost all the frontiers of the 2017 examinations. You may recall that last year, the examination was conducted in 524 centres. The 2017 UTME will hold simultaneously in 642 examination centres in Nigeria.

“A total number of one million, seven hundred and thirty-six thousand, five hundred and seventy-one (1,736, 571) candidates have registered for the 2017 UTME.

“In the last UTME conducted in 2016, a total of one million, two hundred and seventy-two thousand, two hundred and eighty-four (1,272,284) candidates registered for the 2015 UTME.

“The figure for the 2017 UTME shows an increase of four hundred and sixty-four thousand, two hundred and eighty-seven (464,287) applicants when compared with last year’s figure of one million, two hundred and seventy-two thousand, two hundred and eighty-four (1,272,284).

He said JAMB was more prepared to conduct a successful UTME after learning all the lessons from the recent past.

The JAMB registrar added that the agency has made provisions for 321 visually impaired candidates to take write examination.

“A total of 321 visually impaired candidates registered for this year’s examination and adequate arrangements have been provided to ensure that they partake in the examination.
“It is the board’s desire to ensure that no candidate is deprived of taking its examination. The examination will be conducted using JAMB’s equal opportunity group, a group of experts in education, who have graciously assisted in the assessment exercise.

“We have created 691,000 registration points instead of the previous less than 1000. This means that we have developed a system that would allow 691000 candidates to register in 10 minutes with our free access code granted to 100 points of registration at each centre even if our plan was to register 50,000 candidates per day.

“We have started to install CCTV cameras at our test centres so that from the situation room, we can monitor what is going on across the country,” he said.

Oloyede also said the organisation had successfully prosecuted two Nigerians who forged the board’s results and came for confirmation.

“It is certainly not going to be business as usual in the conduct of the board’s examination and other processes. In line with this resolution, the board had secured through diligent prosecution, the conviction of two Nigerians who forged the board’s results and came around for confirmation.

“At the moment, we have lodged complaints against a number of CBT centre owners for one infraction or the other and a number of them were arrested, cautioned, while others are to be prosecuted so as to serve as a deterrent to others,” he added.

First tertiary institutions football tourney to begin July 23

    …JAMB sponsors with N25m

The first edition of the Tertiary Institutions Football Competition sponsored by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) will hold between July 23 and July 30 in Ilorin.

The Kwara Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Kale Ayo, told newsmen in Ilorin on Tuesday that the examination body had approved N25 million to sponsor the competition.

Ayo who is the Chairman, Main Organising Committee (MOC) said the participants would be drawn from those who excel in NUGA, NIPOGA, COEGA and innovative entrepreneur institutions tournaments.

He commended the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, for allowing the body to collaborate with the Kwara State Government to sponsor an annual JAMB National Tertiary Institutions Football Championship.

Ayo however appealed to wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to emulate JAMB and sponsor competitions in other sports such as athletics, judo, squash, badminton, cycling and swimming.

“This should be part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),’’ he said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology in Kwara, Dr Aminah Ahmed, said sports should continue with its role of a unifying factor in the society.

She encouraged Nigerians, particularly students of higher institutions in the state, to always engage in sports activities for physical and mental fitness.

The state’s Director of Sports, Tunde Kazeem, disclosed that three venues would be used in Ilorin for the competition while 400 players and officials were expected at the seven-day event.

He listed qualifiers for the tournament as the semi-finalists from the NUGA, NIPOGA and NICEGA football events, two institutions from hosts Kwara and other two from innovative entrepreneur institutions.

`This makes it a competition for teams from 16 higher institutions,’’ Kazeem said.

The Director of Sports said the top three winners would go home with  certificates and medals, while assuring that adequate security and medical care would be provided during the competition.

He added that draws for the competition would be done a month before the event in Ilorin.

In his contribution, Secretary of the MOC and General Manager of Radio Kwara, Abdullateef Adedeji, promised that the Committee would organise a befitting competition which stakeholders would be proud of.

  • JAMB lauds role of media in nation building with caution notes

Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has commended the Nigerian media for their role in nation building and transformation of the society.

Oloyede gave the commendation in a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday in Lagos.

Oloyede said that the media remained a veritable tool in the board’s quest to execute its mandate of ensuring a brighter future for the Nigerian child.

“The JAMB will like to commend the role of the Nigeria media, especially in its quest to sensitise the public on the innovations carried out in the sale of 2017 application document.

“Of great interest is particularly on the recent publicity given by some media outfits over the `no admission for awaiting candidates’,’’ Oloyede said.

JAMB, however, faulted some of the headlines in the publications, noting that curious readers would jump into conclusion by merely reading the headlines of the publications without reading the body of the stories.

“Such headlines led to readers to think that JAMB had excluded candidates with awaiting results from taking the unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, which is not true.

“Such hasty perusal and attitude is not only capable of misleading the public but could cause disaffection, anger, misconception of Federal Government guidelines on admissions.

“It may also demoralise the Nigerian child intending to take JAMB examination.’’

Oloyede said that the Ordinary Level (O/L) had always been a criterion in considering candidates for admission among other requirements.

According to him, one of such requirements included suitability of the candidate’s performance in the screening exercise, carrying capacity of various institutions, catchment areas and subject combination among other entry qualifications.

Oloyede said that the board was a responsible and responsive organisation and would not disfranchise any candidate intending to take the examination.

“Rather than closing assess, we will expand it in as much as quality and equity is not compromised.

“In view of that, the board stated that candidates with ‘awaiting results’ could take the examination, but would have to upload their results to the board’s portal before the commencement of admissions.

“No candidate should take his or her result to any office but upload on our portal.’’

The registrar urged candidates to upload their result on the website of JAMB to enable the board begin their admission process in record time.

He added that the board would not accept any recommendation from any institution based on awaiting result status.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the board had announced that it would begin the sales of its registration documents for the 2017 UTME before the end of March.

  • Killings, a national tragedy, say Muslims

Killings, a national tragedy, say Muslims

Nigeria Inter Religious Council (NIREC), Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit and The Criterion, a group of Muslim Women in business and professions, have described the series of killings and bombings in the country as a national tragedy.

NIREC Executive Secretary Prof Is-haq Oloyede, told reporters in Ibadan yesterday that he was pworried that the killings were on the increase, despite all efforts to curtail it.

“It is a national tragedy which defies all logic and civility,’’ he said.

Oloyede, who doubles as the Secretary-General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, (NSCIA), urged all Nigerians across all denominations to jettison political and religious propaganda.

The religious leader said that the nation was going through a trial and “all hands must be on the deck to collectively combat these calamities’’.

“We must all rescue our nation from impending doom and ensure that we restore peace and sanity in our country’’ Oloyede said.

Oloyede called on men of goodwill to do all within their powers to curtail the menace which has taken a dangerous dimension of killing innocent school children.

“While we appreciate the efforts of government and other security agencies, we urge them to be more tactical and strategic in confronting the unfortunate development,” he said.

Oloyede equally called on all parents, to take good care of their children and prevent them from taking hard drugs or join a bad gang, which in most cases, the root cause of the problem.

He commiserated with the families of those killed and called on the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the act.

MSSN Lagos State Area Unit Amir (President), Kaamil Kalejaiye enjoined President Goodluck Jonathan to take strategic and dynamic approach towards arresting the perpetrators of inhuman acts.

Kalejaiye said “The spate of unjustified killings have now gone much diabolic that we never can tell where next the subsequent attack would occur. Neither the numbers, nor those killed appears to be important. Lives, no longer seem to count for much. They have become sheer statistics reeled off at conference to authenticate information.

“We condemn these killings and all forms of killing of innocent souls, we state once again that those who are trying to paint Islam bad and black will meet their waterloo very soon.

“We however pour a heart wrenching condolence on the life of innocent souls that were lost in Yobe, Borno and all other places in Nigeria where these attacks are taking place”.

Government, Kalejaiye said has the responsibility to not only protect citizens, but to make them feel safe.

According to him, to win the war against insurgents, personal and political considerations have to receive less attention than millions of lives terrorists place at risk. He said: “The indiscriminate attacks put everyone at risk, terrorists and their supporters alike. Improvement on intelligence gathering and provisions for the security agencies would make the volatile parts of Nigeria peaceful again”.

The Criterion’s National President, Saudat Abu Baqi said mothers are weeping for the loss of innocent souls for no fault of theirs.

“It is saddening that innocent promising children could be cut down in their prime while in search of knowledge,’’ she said.

According to her, the wanton killings have dampened the sense of security and brought instead fears and grieves of attacks.

The Criterion called on the federal government to deploy all machineries at its disposal to preserve human lives, restore human dignity and project Nigeria as a country safe for all.

“We also call on well-meaning Nigerians, regardless of their religious or cultural leaning, to shun personal bigotry and join hands with relevant authorities in finding solution to the scourge,” she said.
