Niger state college of education wins first JAMB football tourney

Niger State College of Education, Minna has won the first JAMB tertiary institutions football competition, held in Ilorin.

College of Education, Minna defeated Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto by 4-3 via penalties after a goalless draw during regulation.

In the third place match played earlier, Delta State University (DELTSU), Abraka defeated Kwara State College of Education, Oro, 4-2 on penalties, having played a one-all draw after 90 minutes.

In his message, the Minister of Sports, Mr Solomon Dalung called on corporate organisations to support government at all levels in sports development.

Represented by the Kwara Director of Sports Tunde Kazeem, the minister thanked JAMB for its investment in football and urged the board to consider further support to other sporting activities.

Also speaking, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said the organisation of the tournament was part of Board’s corporate social responsibility.

Prof. Oloyede who spoke through Dr. Yusuf Lawal, promised that JAMB would continue to partner relevant stakeholders in the development of youths, especially through sports.

  • “440,000 candidates write JAMB exams in two days”

“440,000 candidates write JAMB exams in two days”

No fewer than 440,000 candidates have sat for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations within two days across the country.

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is’haq Oloyede made this known in Abuja on Monday during a tour of the examination centres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Oloyede said that the exams would end in Bauchi, Abia, Niger states and some other states on May 15 while the UTME would continue in Kebbi state, Lagos state, Oyo and some other states.

He also said that some centres in Delta state were underutilised, adding that the Board would fully involved the centres in future exams.

He called on candidates to avoid being exploited by unscrupulous persons in the name of getting exam questions for them.

He said that a case of a person who attacked JAMB officials in Abia state had been reported to the security personnel.

“I believe everything is going on well. We are monitoring the situation except for a person that was said to have attacked our staff in Abia state this morning.

“Candidates should be careful because some of these people go about telling the candidates they can give them questions.

“We are therefore appealing to people to do everything according to the law and avoid cutting corners with JAMB,” he said.

On the recent industrial action at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Oloyede said there was preparation to move the candidates to the University of Ilorin for their exams.

“We understand that there is a sort of strike by either staff or students in Lautech and two of our centres are in that school.

“However, arrangement is being made already to transfer the students because there are no private CBT centres in Ogbomosho and the closest place is Ilorin because of the proximity.

“So we believe it is better than taking them to Ibadan or any other place in Oyo state.”

Oloyede also condemned the incessant strike in Nigerian Universities, saying that the acts could destroy the future of the country and citizens.

He added that unions were free to disagree with the government but not at the detriment of students.

“Anybody who loves this country and education will be against incessant strike.

“I don’t mean government should take academic staff or non-academic staff for granted but it means we should find a way of solving our crisis not at the expense of the innocent ones,” Oloyede said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, who was also on exams monitoring, applauded the board for smooth conduct of the exams.

Anwukah, however, urged candidates to put more effort in order to succeed in the examination.

“Based on what I have seen today, the exercise is excellent and if we can fathom this into what we are doing, I think it will be excellent from now on.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that centres visited within the territory are Digital Bridge Institute, Global Learning Institute, Sascon International School and the JAMB headquarters centre.

  • JAMB arrests 25 persons over illegal sale of UTME materials

JAMB arrests 25 persons over illegal sale of UTME materials

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has arrested 25 persons over illegal registration and sale of 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) materials.

JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede said the individuals arrested were  selling registration materials to the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to candidates.

The suspects, he said, were arrested by a combined team of Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU); members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police Force.

Oloyede said the e-Brochure and e-Syllabus, which were meant to be free were being sold by the culprits as high as N800 each nationwide.

He also said the culprits were extorting money and inflating cost of registration for candidates.

“Our quality assurance unit, particularly the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit had to go out to see what was happening, following reports of extortion.

“We were having reports that candidates are paying more than the N5,500 that is required.,” Oloyede said..

“Some of them inflated the prices of registration and application documents, so we had to arrest them to show Nigerians that those items were not supposed to be sold.

“The arrests were carried out across the country yesterday April 1, and we have handed them over to the Nigerian Police for prosecution, ” he said.

He urged applicants seeking to register for the forthcoming UTME to go about their registration in line with due processes, to avoid hitches associated with irregularities.

He noted that JAMB would stick to its stipulated  April-ending deadline  for registration for this year’s examination.

Oloyede debunked complaints about  poor internet connectivity.

According to him, many of the business centres who wanted  JAMB  to return to the old practice or producers of the scratch cards are behind the complaints.

Oloyede also assured all applicants that they would be registered for the exercise before the end of the month.

  • UTME holds in May

The Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, on Thursday said the 2017/2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will hold in May.

Oloyede, who was speaking at the 2017 Nigerian Academy of Letters Annual Lecture in Abuja, said there was delay in the sales of the forms due to some logistics.

He said the board eliminated the use of scratch cards because many students were victims of extortion from cybercafé attendants.

Oloyede said the board was putting in place strategies that would ensure hitch-free conduct of the examinations.

He added that the board had consulted with relevant examination bodies to ensure there was no clash in any examination.

The JAMB chief said, “We have observed that people are selling fake forms but what we are doing is to try to sanitise the system and as soon as that is done we will start selling the forms.

“In any case, JAMB has invited other examination bodies, there will be no clash but we want to hold the exams when it is appropriate.

“You also know that if we conduct the examination in March, the result will come out almost immediately but the result cannot be used until August or September.

“So, we have to keep the results and that will give room for people to be thinking it’s possible to upgrade.

“But, if we conduct our examination very close to when the result is needed the possibility or perceptions for upgrading will not be there.

“We need to reassure stakeholders that those selling fake forms are gone. We are not going to sell out forms through the other process.”

  • Alleged Islamisation of Nigeria: NSCIA slams PDP

Alleged Islamisation of Nigeria: NSCIA slams PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday came under fresh fire for referring to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party with an agenda for the Islamisation of Nigeria.

Secretary-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Prof Ishaq Oloyede, slammed PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, for making the controversial statement.

    He called it reckless.

Prof Oloyede spoke with pressmen yesterday on the sideline of the 9th Zakat Distribution at the New Great Hall of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos/Lagos University Teaching Hospital (CMUL-LUTH), Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos.

According to the NSCIA scribe, the PDP statement was a product of a confused mind.

He prayed Almighty Allah to guide politicians to be conscious of God in whatever they do.

The event was also witnessed by the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad; Emir of Ilorin Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari; Chief Imam of Lagos Alhaji Garuba Akinola Ibrahim; Chairman of Jaiz Bank Alhaji Umar Mutallab; Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah in Southwest of Nigeria (MUSWEN) Prof Daud Noibi and host of other dignitaries.

The APC itself has already dismissed the PDP allegation as untrue, saying it was part of the agenda of the ruling PDP and the Presidency to discredit it, a plan which it said would fail.

Similarly, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has described the PDP statement as parochial and myopic.

The organisation’s Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said that the view that APC is an Islamic party exists only in the figment of the imagination of dreamers who lack drive and that the PDP statement could only have been meant for “a few gullible Nigerians” as the majority of Nigerians “will not allow themselves to be hoodwinked by self-serving politicians.”

It asked the PDP to call its spokesperson to order, stressing that religion “is a very sensitive issue in this country and no political party should attempt to turn Islam into a pawn in its political chess game.”

  • Promote solidarity among Muslims, says Oloyede

Promote solidarity among Muslims, says Oloyede

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin Prof Ishaq Oloyede has called on the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) to promote solidarity and address collective interest of Muslims in the country.

Oloyede alleged that the council was drifting towards becoming another section of Muslim organisation rather than focus on integrating various groups in the religion.

The scholar spoke at the 90th anniversary of the Ansar-ud-deen Society of Nigeria, held at the weekend in Abuja. He lectured on “An appraisal of a century of Islamic societies in Nigeria.”

Oloyede said: “The NSCIA, headed by Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, ought to be the leading Islamic body in the country but unfortunately, it has not lived up to that.

“It is a platform created by Muslims in Nigeria for interacting with others and catering for interest of others. It is made up of all segments of Muslims but the council almost became another segment of Muslims.”

Oloyede, who is also the NSCIA’s Secretary General, said the body ought to cater for the collected interest of Muslims in the country.

He cited how President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, promptly reacts to national issues as they affect the Christian community.

Oloyede, who noted that he was speaking outside his office, stated that he should be quoted only as an Islamic scholar.

“If anything happens to Christians, CAN will take it up but the Muslims, I will not say we are on our own,” he added.

He called for the integration of all Muslim organisations, adding that Islamic missionaries should avoid sectionalising but work towards the growth of Islam.

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mulikat Adeola-Akande, said it may be difficult for the council to oversee activities of all Muslims in the country.

She said: “The association does not know it all. You can always give a recommendation. Even though you have a high council, that does not mean it has all the knowledge it can use to serve for benefit of the people.

“They are humans and people are difficult to lead or control. When you are doing well, some people might say you are not doing enough. So what I think is we should run an inclusive government so that more people will appreciate what they are doing.”
