  • Men in court for attacking man with cutlass

    Two men, who allegedly attacked a man with a cutlass and injured him during a fracas, were on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, Kehinde Azeez, 21, an auto mechanic and Ariyo Kazeem, 22, whose occupation was not stated, are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, damage and unlawful assault.

    Azeez, resides at No. 15, Olumo St., Aboru, Lagos, while Kazeem’s residential address was not provided.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offences with others at large on April 8 at Aboru, Lagos.

    The prosecutor said a fracas broke out between the duo and the complainant, Mr Joseph Ochonu; and in the process, the accused brought out a cutlass which they used to cut Ochonu’s body.

    He added that Ochonu suffered various injuries following the attack.

    “In the process, the accused stole a phone valued at N47,000 and two vehicle batteries belonging to Ochonu.

    “The accused also damaged a truck’s windscreen – a property of the complainant,’’ Samuel said.

    The offences contravened Section 173, 287, 350 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The news men  reports that Section 173 stipulates a three-year jail term for assault, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A. I. Abina, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    She said the sureties must provide evidence of two years’ tax clearance as part of the bail conditions.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until June 13 for further hearing.

    Man remanded over theft of bus brain box

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded a 29-year-old, Osemeka Ekene, in Kirikiri Prison over alleged theft of the brain-box of a school bus.

    The accused, who resides at Ojota area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of burglary and stealing.

    The Magistrate, Miss A.R. Onilogbo, who gave the ruling, said the accused should remain behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel said the accused broke the side mirror of a Toyota Hiace bus with registration no. KTU 237 XU and also stole its brain box, property of Kingstripes School.

    Samuel alleged that the accused committed the offences on June 1 at Degree Event Centre, Oregun, Lagos.

    He said the accused was earlier sighted at the event centre, where the vehicle was parked.

    “The was caught with a brain box which he stole from the Toyota bus parked at the event centre.’’

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until Aug. 24.

  • Woman charged with defrauding fellow trader

    A 45-year-old trader, Nurat Olayemi, who allegedly obtained N300,000 from another woman on the pretext of curing her ailment, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Olayemi, who lives in Iyana-Ipaja, a suburb of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charges of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing slammed on her.

    But the prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 14 at Oshodi Market, Lagos.

    Samuel said the complainant, Silifa Bashiru, gave the money to the accused to “heal” her of an ailment, but she failed to do so.

    “The accused failed to perform the `miracle of healing’ as promised; the complainant reported the case to the police and she was immediately apprehended.”

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 provides a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 312 stipulates 15 years for obtaining by false pretences.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, Magistrate A.R. Onilogbo granted her bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The magistrate said the sureties must be gainfully employed and also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The court adjourned the case until May 2 for mention.

     

  • Trader docked for beating co-tenant

    A 34-year-old trader, Patricia Osuma, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating her neighbor, Princess Rachael, to pulp.

    Osuma, who resides at No.6, Oluwa-Ajani St., Jibowu Estate, Abule-Egba, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault preferred against her.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 1 at her residence.

    Samuel said the assault by the accused on Rachael, her co-tenant, followed an argument between the duos.

    He said the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested.

    The offence, he added, contravenes Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 171 prescribes three-year jail term for assault.

    The Magistrate, A.R. Onilogbo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He stated that one of the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of   two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Onilogbo adjourned the case till May 2

     

     

     

  • Teenager arraigned for assaulting employer

    A 19-year-old employee, John Edward, was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos for beating up his employer over delay in the payment of salary.

    The accused, whose address was not stated in court, is facing a four-count charge of assault, conspiracy and malicious damage before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    The Prosecutor, Mr. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offences on September 1 at Olusoji Idowu Street, Ilupeju, Lagos.

    Samuel said the accused conspired with others still at large and assaulted their employer, Solomon David, over delay in the payment of their salaries.

    “The accused used dangerous weapons such as iron rod and stick to inflict injuries on the complainant,’’ the prosecutor said.

    According to him, the accused and his collaborators also destroyed a telephone handset worth N7,000 and tore their employer’s shirt, valued at N10, 000.

    Samuel said the offences contravened Sections 410, 171 and 337 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Miss A .R Onilogbo, granted the accused N50,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
