  • Ejigbo sodomy: Prosecution closes case against accused persons

The prosecution in the trial of Isiaka Waidi and nine other persons charged with the assault on two women and a minor – Mrs. Ajoke Agomo, her daughter, Nike Salami and her step daughter, Juliana Agomo, at the Oba Morufu International Market, Ejigbo, Lagos, on Thursday closed its case  the Lagos  High Court, Ikeja, with the presentation of its final witness.

The team led by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP,  Mrs. Idowu Alakija, told the court that one Mrs. Shola Jimoh, a photographer was to give evidence as the last witness for the prosecution before the court presided by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye.

Alakija said a notice of additional evidence dated June 14, 2016 was filed to introduce the witness but the defence raised objections during the course of the trial about the photographs that were taken during investigation.

She said this development made it necessary to summon the photographer.

Led by the DPP, Jimoh a photographer who claimed to have had 30 years’ experience in photography, told the court that she took photographs of the defendants for the police during investigations.

“I learnt the art of photography at Olanrewaju Photos in 1976, I was requested by the police in February 2015 to take photographs of the defendants at the Adeniji Adele Police Station.

“The police pointed out those I should photograph and I obliged them using a Nicon D40 camera to take the photos.

“I printed out the photos from my memory card and handed them over to the police,” Jimoh said.

  • Ejigbo sodomy: Prosecution closes case June 16

The prosecution in the ongoing trial of leader of Oba Morufu International Market, Ejigbo, Lagos, Isiaka Waidi and nine other persons that allegedly assaulted Mrs. Ajoke Agomo, her daughter, Nike Salami and her step daughter, Juliana Agomo, in the market two years ago, on Tuesday told a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja that it will close its case against the defendants on June 16.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mrs. Idowu Alakija, told the court that the prosecution has only one witness left to give evidence and will close its case against the defendants thereafter.

She consequently requested for a short adjournment to enable her bring the witness before the court at the next adjourned date.

“My Lord, we are requesting for a short date for adjournment in this matter. We have only one more witness who is going to give a brief testimony in this matter,” Alakija said.

The trial judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, granted her request and adjourned the matter to June 16 for the prosecution’s final witness.

Earlier, the court heard that the leader of the market, Waidi, lied to the court on his role in the assault of Agomo and her children.

Contrary to Waidi’s claim that he was not present at the scene of the incident, a witness, Olabisi Adejumo, a police officer attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), told the court that investigation had revealed that he (Waidi) was at the scene of the incident.

Led in evidence by the DPP, Adejumo told the court how investigation was carried out on the role played by the market leader.

“As a member of the investigating team, I acted as an interpreter when getting the statement of the first defendant (Waidi).

“I visited his house with members of my team while executing the search warrant and also recorded his statement.

“The defendant claimed that he was only at the crime scene at the beginning of the assault on the victims and that he later left for a meeting at Alausa.

“But our investigations revealed that his claims were not true. He was also in custody for six months during the investigation,” she said.

  • Prosecution witness absence stalls Ejigbo torture suspects’ trial

The trial of leaders of Oba Morufu International Market, Ejigbo , Lagos, alleged to have tortured Julian Agoma and two other was stalled on Wednesday due to the absence of police prosecution witness.

Other victims of the Ejigbo market sodomy are – Ajoke Agoma and Nike Salami.

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Wednesday, the prosecutor, Mr. Akin George, informed the court presided over by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye that ‎his witness, Adejuwon Olabisi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police was not in court.

George told the court that Adejuwon was involved in another matter holding in Benin City, Edo State.

He asked the court for a short adjournment and to vacate earlier dates fixed for trial.

Justice Ipaye granted the prosecution request and vacated the dates earlier fixed for trial.

She thereafter adjourned the matter till May 26 and May 31 for continuation of trial.

    • Suspects should be prosecuted to send the signal that society does not condone such barbarity

The heart-rending story of the inhuman treatment of two young girls and their mother for allegedly stealing pepper in a market in Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos, sometime last year, appears set to be properly rested now. Thanks to the viral social media, the tenacity of a social activist, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, and the unwavering commitment of Lagos State government and the police; those allegedly responsible for the inhuman treatment of the young girls and their mother have been arrested by the police. The alleged suspects include the Babaoloja of Oba Morufu International Market, Ejigbo, Isiaka Waidi and 15 others.

In a most bizarre show of brutality, the victims, as shown in the video that went viral, were stripped naked, tortured and had pepper mixed with hot drink poured into their private parts. The bandits responsible for this most degrading assault allegedly also extorted the sum of N50, 000.00 as ransom from the victims, before banishing them from the community. Until the parade of the suspects, many Lagosians were astounded that such barbarity could be associated with the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. Ordinarily, such brutish assault would perhaps be associated with remote towns and villages, considering the share impudence of the barbarians involved.

Unfortunately, it is reported that one of the victims had died, apparently from the injuries sustained from the assault. Dr. Okei-Odumakin, says that she has visited the grave of the victim, Juliana, in Benin Republic, where she was reported to have relocated for treatment. In her testimony, one of the victims, Nike Salami, a half-sister of late Juliana, claimed that one of the torturers was enraged that Juliana had resisted his pass on her, and so he gruesomely maltreated her, when the opportunity came. She also claimed in the testimony that they were forced to steal, just to buy a day’s meal.

While parading Mr. Isiaka Waidi and 11 other arrested suspects, the police noted that four others were on the run, and promised to publish their pictures so that public and other security agencies can help to track them. The names of the suspects on the run, who had been declared wanted by the Police, include Tiri, an alleged member of Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Otera Oluranti, Michael Abolore and one Akeem. The police public relations officer, Mr. Frank Mba, who paraded the suspects in company of the deputy commissioner of police, Mr. Chris Ezike, said the arrest of the suspects was facilitated by the civil society groups.

We urge the police to quickly and professionally conclude their investigation so that the suspects can be taken to court. Notably, the Director of the Office of Public Defender, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, while observing that the case file will be forwarded to the Office of Public Prosecution, promised: “we will ensure that justice is done in this case”. This is the least that members of the public expect from the authorities in charge of criminal prosecution in the state. For, as Dr. Okei-Odumakin succinctly put it, it is important “to prove a point that jungle justice does not pay”. A diligent prosecution of the offenders will also send a signal that Lagos State does not condone such barbarity.

It is also important that the state authority continues its effort to take miscreants off the streets and disarm cult groups and hoodlums who like to take the laws into their own hands. They must realise, by a zero tolerance action of the state officials and security agencies, that self-serving quasi-security agencies have no place in the mega city status of Lagos.

    • Police declare four wanted

Justice appears on the horizon for the three women that were assaulted in February, last year, at the Oba Morufu International Market, Ejigbo in Lagos State as the police yesterday paraded the Babaoloja of the market, Isiaka Waidi, and 11 other suspects.

They were paraded by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Mr Chris Ezike, and the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Frank Mba, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), at the Adeniji Adele Police Station, Lagos Island.

The victims – two young girls and their mother – were tortured and brutalised by some people at the market for allegedly stealing pepper.

One of the girls, Juliana Agoma, reportedly died in Benin Republic, where she was receiving treatment after the ordeal in which she sustained serious injuries.

The police said four others, who are still in hiding, had been declared wanted. They added that their pictures would soon be made public for their easy identification.

Those declared wanted by the police are: Tiri, an alleged member of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), who was captured in the video footage and alleged to give stripped Juliana, her daughter, Ajoke, and the other victim, naked; Otepa Oluranti, Michael Abolore and another simply identified as Akeem.

In March, last year, an internet video, showing where the three females were being tortured went viral, drawing the ire of Nigerians, especially civil society groups, who demanded investigation of the video and the perpetrators’ arrest.

Mba said: “Waidi is said to be the mastermind of the dastardly act which culminated in the arrest, debasement, torture and extortion of N50, 000.”

Another suspect is Haruna Abdullahi and Buhari Yusuf, who mixed the concoction of pepper and alcoholic spirit that were applied on the bodies, including private parts of the victims. Others are: Saheed Adisa, Lateef Tijani, Ahmed Adisa, Oloruntoyin Dauda (Iya-Oja), Adekunle Adenuga, Jimoh Busari and Azeez Akinosun.”

He said the suspects were identified on a parade by eyewitnesses, who went further to reveal parts played by each suspect, assuring that the Force would work with Interpol to confirm the veracity of Juliana’s death.

Ezike said the suspects’ arrest was facilitated by civil society groups and the state Office of the Public Defenders (OPD).

Waidi denied being involved in the torture of the victims, saying that he was at home when security guards attached to the market called him that they had discovered persons behind the stealing of missing pepper and tomatoes in the market.

Waidi added: “When I got to the market, I was taken to their home. I found out that it was a little girl. I left instructions that they should hand them over to the police since I was rushing down to Alausa in Ikeja for a meeting. I didn’t even know the extent of what the security guards did to the woman and her children until I saw the video. I was not the person that committed the crime; it was the security guards.”

Nike Salami, 16, half-sister of the late Juliana said Waidi lied as she recounted how Waidi repeatedly kicked her mother, after others had stripped her naked.

“They said they would cut off my mother’s head. They told our landlord to give us quit notice, that we were thieves. They sent us out of the area and we went to live at my mother’s village,” said Nike. Mrs. Ajoke Agoma praised Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin for “relentlessly pursuing the case.

Okei-Odumakin, who said she had visited the late Juliana’s grave in Benin Republic, added: “We also wanted to prove a point that jungle justice does not pay.”

The Director of the OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, who said the case file would be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution, vowed: “We’ll ensure that justice is done in this case.”

Mba said the police would work with other security agencies, in the distribution of the pictures of the wanted four, so that people could alert the nearest police wherever they sighted them.
