In fulfilment of one of his campaign promises, the Executive Chairman of Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Hon. Shamsudeen Abiodun Olaleye has given out bursary awards to 100 students in higher institutions across the country.

At the award ceremony held at the council’s secretariat on Thursday, the students received the sum of N25, 000 each from the council chief to support their education careers.

In his address, Hon. Olaleye said his administration is giving serious consideration to education; beginning with pupils at crèche level up to students in institutions of higher learning.

“Our aim is to touch the lives of many students as possible in their pursuit of education. We have distributed educational materials to pupils in the crèche classes; we have distributed school bags to primary school pupils; we have organised remedial classes for SS2 students preparing for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) during our first term in office.

“When we were campaigning for re-election, we promised to give bursary awards to students of tertiary institutions who are residents and indigenous to our LCDA. The money we are giving is to reduce the financial burden on their parents. We expect the students to spend the money on things that would impact positively on their education,” he said.

Hon. Olaleye added that the award programme would hold quarterly, even as he enjoined those who did not make the list of first batch of the award recipients to exercise patience as many of them who applied for the programme would have the opportunity to be considered for the award.

The bursary award scheme was first initiated by Hon. Olaleye in 2011 during his first term in office as one of his campaign promises. Over 500 students benefited from the programme.

THE chairman, Isolo Local Council Development Area, Hon Samsudeen Olaleye marked his 400 days in office. At an interactive session with journalists at the council secretariat, he reviewed past performances, explained the present situation including the challenges faced by the council and his plans for the future.

On roads and infrastructure, the chairman said 56 roads had been graded; 49 in Okota/Ago axis and seven in Ire-Akari. “The work done on these roads are palliative and ongoing; a permanent work will be done on them when the weather is favourable. For Osolo Way, Mushin Road, Promasidor Road, major work had been done on them and they are all in good condition. Alabe road was in bad shape but it is now rehabilitated. The same goes for Ogunbiwale Street in Ilasa where 485metres had been tarred. I can proudly say all the major roads in Isolo are in good condition,” he said.

Olaleye said the council had done creditably well in providing drains to control flood. In Adesina Street, about 250metre drain was provided and in Okoto area, about 50 culverts provided. For the dredging work at Ilasamaja, the state government was invited for the re-dredging of the canal after doing a report. The exercise had positively affected 49 streets in the first phase. The other phase will affectanother 49 streets. “In all, 70 streets have been desisted and no major flooding have been reported in the area”, the chairman noted.

In the education sector, his high points are the reconstruction of a block of classrooms each at Ilasamaja Primary School and St Paul Anglican Primary School, Ishagatedo, provision of furniture and distribution of writing materials and exercise books. “Our primary schools now have magnetic boards and we intend to extend same to secondary schools. We have distributed customised school bags and generating sets to power boreholes . In addition, the council conducted extra-mural classes for JSS2 students. There is a scholarship programme for indigent students of the council as well. Adults were not left out in the scheme of things as adult mass literacy centres have increased to five from just one at the inception of the current administration” he said.

The council, according to the chairman, has satisfied the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard of one health centre to a political ward. He said work on Apena Health Centre has been completed and that of Oke Openi is functioning with N12 million assistance from Johnson Wax Pharmaceuticals. The foundation for Alagbeji Ward Health Centre has been laid.

In social welfare, about 120 widows were carefully selected by representatives and traditional rulers to benefit from a social programme instituted by the council. Two widows and two senior citizens are now taking monthly dues with four women on monthly allowances.

Besides, a bursary scheme has been instituted by the council.

As revenue is the key to economic and social development, the council has raised his revenue profile. He said: “We met N80m revenue projection per annum, the actual performance was N56m. When we came in 2011, we doubled it to N160m. As we speak, we have gone beyond N100m mark. We have not anything magical apart from meeting the developmental needs of our people. Isolo people now pay taxes voluntarily without being forced to do so”.

In market development, the chairman said “we have inherited and adopted Ire-Akari market now. This is after the initial litigation that characterised ownership. The first phase of development will produce 1000 shops. The same goes for Ilasamaja International market whose contract has been terminated and rewarded. About 500 shops are now ready for occupation. All papers on Aswani/Farombi market are completed. About 3000 shops are planned for the market. The right side will be for textile is others such as aluminum and other wares would have their places too.

To ensure safety of lives and property, the council holds regular security meetings with the police. It has also procured generating sets for police posts and provided allowances for fuelling them. The council has equally provided two patrol vans out of the four planned for the police division.
