U.S. envoy arrives in Beirut seeking Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire deal

U.S. Middle East mediator Amos Hochstein arrived in Beirut on Tuesday in an effort to finalise a ceasefire agreement that would end the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah.

A government source and state media reported that the U.S. envoy arrived at the residence of House Speaker Nabih Berri, who is representing Hezbollah in the negotiations.

For weeks, details of an alleged U.S. ceasefire proposal have been circulating in the media.

According to Lebanese security sources, Israel and Hezbollah are to initially suspend their hostilities for 60 days.

During this period, the Israeli military is to withdraw from Lebanon and Lebanese armed forces are to be deployed along the border.

After 60 days, Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold negotiations on the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701.

Hezbollah reportedly regards the U.S. draft as a basis for further negotiations.

Since September, Israel’s military has massively expanded its attacks in Lebanon, where it said it is seeking to push back Hezbollah from its northern border so that residents can return to their homes.

Fighter planes have bombed targets across the country and frequently in the suburbs south of Beirut.

The Hezbollah militia, which launched its attacks on Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on October 8, has been firing on Israel in turn.

The Lebanese caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati told Qatar’s Al Arabi TV on Monday that his country views the U.S. ceasefire proposal positively, though certain points required further clarification and analysis.

Israel began its military campaign in Gaza to eliminate Hamas following the unprecedented Oct. 7 attacks by militants on southern Israel.

Around 60,000 people in northern Israel have fled their homes due to the shelling. Since the start of the war, 77 people have been killed there and more than 640 injured.

In Lebanon, more than 3,000 people have died as a result of Israeli airstrikes and shelling.

The Lebanese Football Association (LFA) has postponed all soccer matches in its affiliated tournaments after Israel struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah targeted military facilities in northern Israel on Tuesday.

Lebanese authorities said 558 people were killed and 1,835 were wounded after overnight airstrikes, with tens of thousands fleeing to safety amid increased fears of a full-blown war.

“Due to the current situation in the country, the executive committee of the Lebanese Football Association has decided to postpone matches of all tournaments to a date to be determined later,” the LFA said.

Palestine have also staged their recent home matches abroad in Kuwait and Qatar, while Israel are hosting their Nations League home games in Hungary.

Major Israel-Hezbollah missile exchange as region fears escalation

Hezbollah launched hundreds of rockets and drones at Israel early yesterday, as Israel’s military said it struck Lebanon with around 100 jets to thwart a larger attack, in one of the biggest clashes in more than 10 months of border warfare.

Missiles were visible curling up through the dawn sky, dark vapour trails behind them, as an air raid siren sounded in Israel and a distant blast lit the horizon, while smoke rose over houses in Khiam in southern Lebanon.

Three deaths were confirmed in Lebanon and none in Israel, where damage appeared to be limited. Hezbollah indicated it was not planning further strikes yet.

Israel’s foreign minister said the country did not seek a full-scale war but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned: “This is not the end of the story.”

Any major escalation in the fighting, which began in parallel with the war in Gaza, risks morphing into a regional conflagration drawing in Hezbollah’s backer Iran and Israel’s main ally the United States.

Hezbollah said it had fired 320 Katyusha rockets towards Israel and hit 11 military targets in what it called the first phase of its retaliation for Israel’s assassination of Fuad Shukr, a senior commander, last month.

A Hezbollah official said it had delayed its retaliation to give a chance for ongoing Gaza ceasefire talks and other “political considerations”. The official said the group had calibrated it to avoid triggering a full-scale war.
