    Are candidates addressing issues?

Is President Goodluck Jonathan utilising effectively the opportunities available to him to ensure that his re-election bid sails through seamlessly? Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI looks at the President’s campaign vis-à-vis that of his main challenger, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

With the general elections about two weeks away, the campaigns are in full swing. The competition to occupy the moral high ground is intense. This is not unexpected; elections and campaigns are noisy enterprises. But,  the campaign for next month’s general elections is assuming a worrisome dimension because the candidates are not addressing the issues. The two major political parties — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) — may have been paying lip service to running an issue-based campaign, but for most part they have been abusing each other and heating up the polity.

    Diversionary tactics

Indeed, the PDP has been criticised by many observers for what have been described as a diversionary tactics; to shift away the focus of the campaign from the burning issues, such as corruption in high places, the insurgency in the Northeast, the inability of the government to rescue abducted Chibok school girls, unemployment and the fate of the power roadmap.

The APC has been making an effort to focus on issues. Judging from the messages filtering to the public, its campaign appears to be more focused, specifically on the issue of fighting corruption, tackling the insurgency and giving the country a new direction generally.

The same cannot be said for the ruling PDP. For most part, the party’s campaign has been focused more on the personality of the APC standard bearer, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, than anything else. Initially, it was the allegation of religious bigotry and plan of islamising Nigeria that was on the front burner of the campaign. Later, attention shifted to Buhari’s age, his health and capacity to function in a modern economy. Now, Gen. Buhari and the APC presidential campaign team are being compelled to focus on the issue of the candidate’s educational qualification.

Besides, the campaign posters, billboards and newspaper advertisements of President Jonathan appear to lack coordination and focus, compared to that of his major opponent in the election. According to experts, the content of the campaign communication materials suggest that they do not pass through a central coordinating authority or clearing house, as expected in a campaign of this nature.

    Smear campaign

In particular, it is generally believed that the advertisement by the Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose last week, suggesting that Buhari could die in office, is politically damaging to the President’s re-election bid. It has been widely condemned as insensitive. The advert suggested that Buhari could die in office, as was the case with three former Nigerian leaders from the Northwest geo-political zone. Two days after the advert appeared in two national dailies, the National Human Rights Commission carpeted Fayose and a Roman Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, who had earlier used his pulpit to preach politically partisan messages, saying they contravened provisions of the Electoral Act prohibiting the use of hate speech in campaigns.

The commission, through its chairman, Dr. Chidi Odinkalu, said the recent advertorial sponsored by Fayose and Mbaka’s comments on candidates constituted hate speeches barred by sections 95 to 102 of the Electoral Act. Odinkalu added: “Father Mbaka has violated the Electoral Act twice with his comments first in favour of President Jonathan and the second in favour of Gen. Buhari. Section 92 to 102 prohibits hate speeches. It prohibits the use of religious places for political campaigns.”

    Buhari under attack

Buhari has come under attack as an ex-military Head of State for seizing power from a democratically-elected government in December 1983. For the PDP, it is perhaps a case of a leopard and its spots. The party, which has been in power since 1999, has been whipping up the politics of fear, harking back to the days of the former army general’s crackdown on corruption and indiscipline. “No matter how many pretty robes you wear, once a tyrant, always a tyrant,” one PDP newspaper advertisement said, with photos of Buhari in military uniform, a dinner jacket and ethnic attire. Others evoked the fear of jailing political opponents or his muzzling of the media during his 20 months in power. Whether the tactic will pays off for the PDP remains to be seen.

But, for political observers, the standard of the campaign is a worrying development, arguing that it does little to help enhance already shaky confidence in the country’s leaders. “I think it has a negative impact on the political process and citizens aren’t able to see the quality of people running for election,” said Clement Nwankwo, Director of the Policy and Legal Advisory Centre, a pro-democracy group. “What they see are personal attacks, falsehoods and political smearing… that has not elevated the debate,” he noted. For Nwankwo, the APC has fallen into a PDP trap by responding to the claims, instead of rebutting the allegations by continually questioning the government’s achievements.

Dapo Thomas, a lecturer at the Lagos State University, called it a “gutter campaign” borne out of fear in the PDP that it could lose power for the first time in 16 years.  The electorate may be able to see through it, he suggested, particularly as some of the issues had not been raised on the three previous occasions that Buhari contested the presidential election. “They (the PDP) have seen the writing on the wall,” he added.

The President committed a monumental blunder at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, when he flagged off his campaign, by not seizing the opportunity to explain to Nigerians the reasons why they have not started feeling the positive impact of his Transformation Agenda and what he intends to do, if re-elected. Rather than focusing on issues, he chose to take a swipe at past administrations, including that of his major opponent, for poorly equipping the military. This is in addition to indicting his generation for failing to do something to contribute to the development of Nigeria. In what seems like a clear failure of anger management for a public figure, the President has been hurling invectives in all directions.

    Missing link

Even, supporters of the President are not happy over the way his re-election campaign is being prosecuted. The mood at the President’s interactive forum with the organized private sector and leaders of professional bodies last Sunday suggests that his re-election bid is losing steam. The impression that assailed many observers at the event is that the problem of the administration is that of poor perception by the public and that the problem is self-inflicted. Some of President Jonathan’s ministers were on hand to reel out achievements of the administration, which are to some extent verifiable. They include the Minister of Finance and the Co-ordinating Minister for the Economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Petroleum Resources Mrs. Diezani Allison-Maduekwe, Minister of Agriculture Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, Minister of Trade and Investment Dr. Olusegun Aganga and Minister of Works Mr. Mike Onolememem. The ministers tried desperately to convince the audience that the administration has posted a scintillating performance in the last four years.

But, given the achievements that were enumerated, the missing link, as pointed out by the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals Limited Mrs. Stella Okoli, is communication. The impression was that those in charge of the government’s publicity are not doing a good job of it. The thrust of the achievements is that the administration has succeeded in diversifying the economy, as the recent rebasing suggested. In his response to the comment, President Jonathan admitted that his administration may not have done enough in terms of publicity. His words: “If I tell you the number of times that my ministers appeared on television to showcase what the administration is doing, you won’t believe it. But, still it doesn’t penetrate. Probably, they are using more of television; we must find a way of doing this, so that people would know what government is doing.”

    Lack of articulation

It was also obvious at the interactive forum, which was well attended by many captains of industries, that the President did not equally live up to his promise of holding such forum with the corporate world as regularly as he had promised. Jonathan acknowledged this by apologizing to the house that he could not sustain the interaction, which was supposed to take place quarterly. The Corporate Forum’s evening with President Jonathan, which also doubled as a fund-raising event, was almost a desperate plea by the ruling party to secure the backing of the private sector. Captains of industries that graced the occasion include Oba Otudeko, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Femi Otedola, Mr. Jim Ovia and Mr. Atedo Peterside.

In terms of their manifestoes and programmes, observers say there is no much difference the PDP and the APC; as they are still preoccupied by what has been described as “infrastructural democracy”, which focuses on the provision of roads, power, education, healthcare, housing and the like. For instance, oil industry operators have taken a swipe at the presidential aspirants, saying that electioneering campaigns are not issue based, but more of mud sliding.

    Vote of no confidence

Some of the operators expressed dissatisfaction that Nigerians are being taken for granted, as the aspirants are not identifying specific policies that will save the oil-dependent Nigerian economy from doom in the light of current realities of sliding oil prices. One of such respondents, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of Frontier Oil and Gas, Mr. Dada Thomas, said, “I’ve watched and listened to all the campaigns by the presidential aspirants in the different regions, and I’ve not seen or heard any issue based campaign from any of them.”

He added: “Such a development is a shame because what the private sector operators and Nigerians want to hear are: what are the issue, problems and challenges; what are the solutions and what we are going to do from level 1 to level 2; and what is the time bound for effecting these solutions? But they are not saying anything, and are busy attacking their personalities. Is this what Nigerians want to hear, or the aspirants saying that Nigerians do not understand the issues affecting their daily lives?”

While acknowledging that the campaigns are not issue-based, the President, Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), Mr. Chikwe Edoziem, noted that the aspirants are playing safe by concentrating more on common place issues that will appeal to the electorates. He said: “Nobody is making any economic comments or in deed any comment on the industry (oil and gas), which is the bedrock of the economy in the light of global developments. Rather, they talk about roads and other basic infrastructures which is taken for granted in other climes that the common man can relate to.”

Edoziem, however, blamed the trend on lack of understanding, saying, “They (the aspirants) are not saying anything possibly because none of them is well grounded on economic operations, and may want to stick to what they know.” Nevertheless, a confrontation on the economy would become inevitable for all the contestants, especially Buhari and Jonathan, when they square up to each other face-to-face, to tell Nigerians how they intend to implement their party manifestoes.

  • 2015: Between issues and tussles

SIR: Elections offer voters the platform to make vital choices. Irrespective of its scope, whether local or national, elections give voters the chance to reflect on the issues which really matter to them and make a decision on which candidate to support. In a democracy, election campaigns, where candidates make attempts to persuade voters to support them, precede most elections. Campaigns present a windowpane for voters to study, discover and choose the candidates that truly represent their positions on critical issues that affect their future. Ideally, campaigns are always very critical to the final outcome of elections. In advanced democracies, voters’ preferences at polls are usually influenced by the performances of candidates during campaigns.

But do campaigns really sway voters in our nation? Historically, electioneering campaigns in Nigeria do not usually address major issues that bother on the interests, welfare and security of the people. It, therefore, often leaves the voter with little or no premise to determine who usually gets his votes. Rather than addressing very germane issues, campaigns in our climes, more often than not, are characterized by name callings, mudslinging, thuggery, hooliganisms, maiming and killing. And whenever the contestants choose to address issues, they often limit the scope of discourse to the usually divisive lines of religion, ethnicity and tribal sentiments.

Characteristically, as the all important electioneering year 2015 approaches, it is evident that nothing has really changed in terms of the style and pattern of political parties towards political campaigns. The incessant clamour by the media, civil society organisations, the academia, electoral monitoring groups, NGOs and other related bodies for aspirants and political parties to run issue based campaigns, seems to be yielding very little or no result. On the contrary, what pervades the polity is the usually needless acrimony that unnecessarily heats up the political atmosphere. From Sokoto to Maiduguri, Jos to Minna, Port-Harcourt to Benin City and Ibadan to Ado Ekiti, there is palpable tension, occasioned by unhealthy political happenings, almost everywhere. It beats one’s imagination that those that aspire to lead us often resort to tussles rather than concentrating on salient national issues that would engender socio-political and economic growth. Why, for instance in the 21st century, should maiming and killing become campaign strategies? Why should arson be a technique for political advocacy?

Turning electioneering campaigns into a tug of war is a slap on the face of the electorates. The voters deserve much more respect. They deserve more than the blabbing, that lacks substance which are most often erroneously taken for electioneering campaigns by the contestants. It is this aberration that is partly responsible for the predominance of voters’ apathy in the country. Most voters, rightly or wrongly, usually conclude that since the major issues that directly have significant bearing on their daily livings are not often extensively discussed by politicians during campaigns, they would rather stay away from the polls.

It is, therefore, imperative for all stakeholders in the electoral process to put in place a system that encourages dialogue, among aspirants, on relevant issues during political campaigns. There is need to put in place a structure that promotes healthy debates on burning national issues among aspirants. This would afford voters the opportunity to appraise the personality, character and other qualities of the respective aspirants. It is important that the electorates have a platform through which they could accurately gauge the preparedness, intellectual ability and emotional frame of these men before deciding on whom is most deserving of their precious votes.

CIBN issues code of conduct to check infractions

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) has issued new code of conduct for banks to check the rising cases of infractions in the banking industry.

The institutes also said it resolved 1350 petitions/cases of infractions within the last 13 years.

It said the new code of conduct represents the harmonized version of three codes, namely, the code of ethics and professionalism in the banking and finance industry, code of banking practice and the professional code of conduct.

Presenting the new code of conduct to the media in Lagos, the President/Chairman of Council, CIBN, Dr. Segun Aina said the new code emanated as part of efforts and mandate of the institute to further maintain and ensure compliance of banking institutions to the ethical standards and professionalism as well as guarantee the safety and soundness of the nation’s banking industry.

According to him, the code is expected to enhance the highest level of adherence to good banking practices and a strong commitment to high ethical standards in the banker-customer relationship.

He note that the provisions of the code is binding on the industry as all operators and regulators made inputs to its development while approval was obtained from the bankers’ committee.

“The institute also requires its members, as a matter of necessity, to recognize the required responsibilities in the conduct of their businesses and to strictly adhere to the code.

“The provisions in the code governs the behaviours of both individual and corporate bodies in the banking industry, It also applies to all strata/cadre of employees in the industry whether full time, part time, temporary, contract of in-sourced.

  • Fayose: I won’t take up issues with APC

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, former Governor Ayo Fayose, has said he will not take up issues with Governor Kayode Fayemi and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the run down to the June 21 election.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Fayose told reporters in Abuja yesterday that: “This is not a sign of weakness on my part, but a sign of maturity, which I have gained over the years. I have vowed not to join issues with anyone on any matter between now and June 21.

“This is to show that Ayo Fayose is now more mature than he was when he was the governor of Ekiti State. I am going to focus on issues. My intention is to concentrate on our campaigns to ensure that we do not only win, but have landslide victory.’’

He said he would, henceforth, concentrate on his strategies to ensure that the PDP reclaims the state .

According to him, the strength of the APC at present is based on media propaganda.

Fayose challenged his critics, who accused him of corruption and other sundry vices while in office, to come up with fresh allegations.

  • Issues that will shape Anambra poll

Issues that will shape Anambra poll

Correspondent ODOGWU EMEKA ODOGWU examines the issues that will shape the Anambra State governorship poll.

Anambra State will elect a new governor tomorrow.

There are 25 political parties in the race, but only five are serious. The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Governor Peter Obi is interested in handing over to a succeessor. But the four parties and their candidates are mounting a road block.

Apart from the APGA, other parties in the race are the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP) and the Progressives Peoples Party (PPA). The candidates are Chief Willie Obiano (APGA), Dr. Chris Ngige (APC), Dr. Chris Ubah (LP), Comrade Tony Nwoye (PDP) and Mr. Godwin Ezeemo (PPA).

    Religious politics

The PDP candidate , Nwoye , has been adopted by the Anglican Church. The Bishop of Awka Diocesse, Dr Alex Ibezim, allegedly ordered that the congregation should endorse him tomorrow.

The directive has polarised the church. Many said that Ezeemo, an Anglican, has lost out, owing to the endorsement by the church. But the supporters of Ngige , Obiano and Ubah are unperturbed.

Observers contends that the Anglican Church is not as partisas as the Catholic Church. They are of the view that, if the Catholic Church had endorsed a candidate, the congregation would have complied. But Anglicans are known for their republican nature and their priests do not command the kind of followership that looks up to the Catholic priests for direction.

The situation would be a plus for any candidate who reaches out to other denominations and traditionalists for their votes. Obiano, Ngige and Ubah are Roman Catholic members.

A source said that the Roma Catholic Church will announce their candidate tonight. Whoever the Bishop says is the candidate is may win, it is believed, because the church has the numerical strength and the faithful are submissive. Ubah has been courting the church in anticipation of this favour. He and ezeemo have been supporting church projects.

Governor Peter Obi is close to the church authorities and may swing the pendulum to his candidate, Obiano. But Obi is not the candidate. Ngige, a knight of the Catholic church, can also be a beneficiary of a bloc support from the church.

    Incumbency factor

The APGA is the ruling party and ordinarily, Obiano would have anticiapted a walk over, if the formidable rivals are not around. Obi is mounting a lot of propaganda, using the incumbency factor. But, Ngige’s foot soldiers not giving him a breathing space across the local governments.

Ngige knows Obi is his headache and not Obiano. Had Obi not given his backing to Obiano, Ngige would have had an easy ride. So, he is doing everything he could to outsmart Obi to get the crown.

It is debatable, whether the APC candidae needs the support of the governor of Imo state , Owelle Rochas Okorocha. Many have said that some Anambrans, especially those in the APGA, are not happy with the governor.

Ezeemo and Ngige are bitter rivals. The PPA candidate had to defect from the APC when the ticket landed on Ngige’s palm. There are few APC sympathisers in the PPA working against Ngige, but their impact is not significant.

Ubah has followers, who are interested in money and other material gains in this election period. He has a deep pocket, but a weak platform.

    Federal Government’s support:

If the rumour making the rounds is anything to go by, then, the invasion of hundreds of policemen and other security agents is suspicious. Some people have said that they are in town to scare the public and rig the poll for the PDP. But rigging may be impossible as the candidates have vowed to police their votes. If the police and all other security agents do their work, then, a free and fair election would throw up the winner.

    Experience

Ngige is a former governor. He is also a senator. For 33 months , he riled the state. He has said that he wanted to return to the State House to complete his unfinished business. Ngige is a crowd puller. He has a large followership. They are fanatically loyal to his cause. Ngige read Medicine, practiced for more than three decades and retired from the Federal Civil Service. .

Obiano is counting on his experience as a banker and first Igbo auditor of Texaco. He campaigning, based on the achievements Obi. He hopes to exploit the power of incumbency. But the incumbency power can collapse on the poll day. Obiano retired as a Chartered Accountant/Auditor. He is a banker of repute.

Nwoye is the former President of the National Association of Nigerians Students (NANS). He is the former Chairman of the PDP in Anambra state. He has grassroots followership. He also has the backing of Prince Arthur Eze, the oil magnate. Some people said that Nwoye read medicine , but he has not practiced the profession.

Ubah is a businessman. He is rich. But he is said to be in a business crisis. He has a honourary doctorate degree from a reputable university. But his critics say that his highest certificate is NECO.

Ezeemo resigned as a civil servant before going into private business. He has a conglomerate of business in Nigeria and abroad. He has about 10 industries in Anmabra State. He read Marketing and he has acquired other professional qualifications.

    Women

Obi’s wife, Margaret, is mobilising the women for Obiano. Ezeemo’s wife, Nneka, is also not relenting. She had visited almost 177 communities, urging the women to supportb her husband.

Mrs. Obi has visited the 14 councils across the three senatorial districts. She is fluent. At Awka North Council, she appealed passionately to the women to support Obiano, assuring that he will defend their cause. She described Obiano and his running mate, Dr Nkem Okeke, as the best men for the job.

Mrs. Obi has also initiated Obiano’s wife, into politics. She has led an independent campaign to some zones, along with the wife of the deputy governor, Mrs Sibeudu, Hon. Uche Ekwunife , the APGA Woman Leader, Mrs Nwokedi, and another federal legislator from Awka North and South Constituency, Mr Emeke Nwowgbo.

Mrs Obi said that Obiano shared the same vision with the governor, adding that he and his running mate will continue the transformation agenda of her husband.

Mrs. Obi has also enjoined the women to vote for APGA, in appreciation of the his husband’s people-oriented programmes targeted at the women.

She said that APGA will remain a partner in progress with the women groups.

The first lady advised the women to discourage their children from thuggery. She chrged them to report any breach of the peace during the election to the security agents.

She urged the women to vote for the candidates of their choice without fear.

The legislator from Anaocha/Njikoka and Dunukofia Constituency, Ekwunife, appealed to the women to vote for APGA so that they can continue to benefit from the dividends of democracy.

Her Awka North and Awka South counterpart, Emeke Nwogbo, assured that, with the support and love shown to the people of the area, they will vote for APGA.

Today, the governor’s wife will be rounding off his campaign tour of the remaining 17 local governments.

    Anambra Intellectual Forum

Anambra Atate Intellectuals Forum, comprising university, polytechnic and college, has shown interest in the poll. The body also organised a debate for the running mates.

The Head of Mass Communication Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka , Dr Ifeoma Dunu, said the event was a way of giving solidarity to one of them, Dr Okeke. The lecturer prayed for a free and fair poll, wher the best candidate will emerge.

Dunu described the forum as an advisory commmitte willing to render help to the politicians.

Dr Harry Obi Nwosu is the chairman of the forum. He lauded the civility exhibited at the campaigns.

Prof Osita Nwosu from Abia State University and the Director, Chike Okoli Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof Edmund Eboh, said that Obiano and Okeke have intimidating profile. He urged the state to give them the mandate to rule.

Okeke told the forum that he entered politics to add value to governance. He said that his integrity, and not money, will make people to vote for the APGA team.

Okeke prayed God to grant him victory at the polls. He said: “If you are sincere, you would work for your people . Do what is right and you have better future for our children. Good governance is the end of all these activities and you need some form of experience and credibility to be able to navigate these”.

Obiano assured the forum members that he will not let them down.

Obiano traced his life and work history, contending that he could not afford to disappoint Anambra people, having not disappointed himself as a chartered accountant since 1989.

He promised to build a good future for the state thorough interventions in agriculture and industrialosation targeted at creating employment and fighting poverty.

    Idemili

Idemmili is the base of Ngige. When Obiano visited the area, some community leaders still embraced him.

At Ogidi, a community leader, Chief Samuel Anyanwutaku, endorsed Obiano. The supporters of Ngige were not perturbed because the people who endorsed Obiano have no political clout.

Addressing the people, Anyanwutaku said the community endorsed APGA and its candidate , following the appraisal of the developmental programmes of Obi Administration.

He said: “I am not a politician, neither am I a contractor. I am a big time businessman and all I do is for the interests of my people in Ogidi and Anambra at large. We have come here to brainstorm on the need to support the APGA and Chief Willie Obiano as the next governor because of what the party had done for us and the only way we can show appreciation to what Governor Obi has done for us is to vote Chief Willie Obiano, who has promised to consolidate on the achievements of Obi.

“Since the creation of Anambra State in 1991, no administrator or governor has ever appointed Ogidi citizens as commissioners or special advisers. Today, an Ogidi indigene, Chief Obiakor, is the Commissioner for Health under Peter Obi and Bob Manuel Udokwu is today a Special Adviser”

Anyanwutaku said that Obiano will use his managerial acumen, which he exhibited as the Chief Executive of Fidelity Bank, to take Anambra State to a greater height.

Obi was accompanied by APGA leaders, including the National Chairman, Sir Victor Umeh.

The National Chairman thanked the Ogidi Community for coming out in large numbers to receive them and assured them of better days, if they vote for APGA.

Some members of the Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ekwusigo Council defected to the APGA. The decampees declared for the party at a rally in Ozubulu.

Speaking on behalf of the decampees, a former Vice Chairman of Labour Party in Ekwusigo, Mr. Ikenna Nwiki ,said they joined APGA because of its consistency, honesty and commitment towards promoting the Igbo agenda.

Also speaking, a former PDP Youth Leader in the area, Mr. Godfrey Adimmachukwu, said they were tired of the instability in their former party and wanted to be part of the success story of the Obi Administration.

  • Solutions to real life relationship issues

Question: Dear Princess, I am a 26 year old and have been married for the last 6 months. I am one of those old fashion ladies that do not believe in sex before marriage. My husband most of the time will release before the foreplay is even half way through, which means we can be on this for about an hour or more trying to see if I can get him to hold himself enough to enter before releasing. Even when we finally get him to enter and release, within on minute he is done. Although he is my 1st and only love, my body yells for more than this. Talking with my friends, it’s obvious that this is not a normal behavior. Princess, can you please help me on how I can help my husband so as to help my marriage. I do not want to end up looking outside before getting sexual satisfied. Ngozi, Amambra.

Answer: Ngozi, what your husband is exercising is called premature ejaculation. Which means “coming too quickly” it is one of the most common sexual problems which in our society most couples do not know where to turn, they just accept it. According to a 2006 congress of the European society for sexual medicine, an American research paper reported that the average lasting time for men with premature ejaculation was 1.8 minutes and “normal” men lasted an average of 7.3 minutes. But there were males who claimed to have premature ejaculation, yet who could last up to 25 minutes. This obviously shows people have wildly different ideas about what is normal. The condition can be so bad that the man can’t have sex because he ejaculates before he can get into the vagina. This can be devastating for a man’s self-confidence, and it can be hugely frustrating and annoying for his partner, especially if she wants to get pregnant. Earlier experience in trying not to get detected might have pre-conditioned some people to develop premature ejaculation. Some studies show it might have been inherited, so it can either be learned or inherited, either way it is a problem. Anxiety no questions or nerved play a part in many cases, like if you’re nervous you’re likely to come quickly. Some men find that drinking some alcohol might help lengthen the climax period. Of course I am not recommending on this as a treatment just an idea. There are different types of treatments from mild to severe cases. If your spouse is considered mild, i.e. you want him to increase his lasting period from 5 minutes to 10 minutes there is no point in seeing a doctor. Using a distraction technique will help by turning his mind to something else when you sense that climax is near. For example, you can think about something totally unconnected with sex or even pinch yourself. For severe ones, there is a “long love” condom, which was developed by a German scientist and won’t cause vaginal irritation. It is called “Long Love Condon” and it contains a local anesthetic (benzocaine or lidocaine) inside. If you are going try this make sure that you are not sensitive to either one of the medication and of course consult your doctor before trying this or any product that can cause sensibility to your skin. There is also a method called “the masters Johnson Method.” Go on the internet for step-by- step instructions on using and following this method. Remember, a marriage is for better or for worst. I would have wished that your husband told you about this before marrying you. The choice of marrying him knowing that he has a sexual problem would have been yours. Finally, love and a good communication skill is essential in any relationship. This is a problem that the both of you can solve together, but it will require both communication and patience from you. Good Luck!

Question: Dear Princess, in response to your Barristers story about Day,noon and night husband or partner. I am a 53 year old man and I have two daughters who are 23 and 24 respectively and I am not married. I have a steady girlfriend and not ready to settle down again with any woman. Aside from my steady girlfriend, I swing from one woman to another, and I see myself as a “evening partner or husband” to my current partner right now, especially since there is no paper commitment to each other. Deep down, she is free to do whatever she wants as long as I am not aware of it, and to be honest if I am aware I will forgive her. Alex, Benin.

Answer:Relationships do not have to be such a struggle. Only when we do not understand one another is there tension, resentment, or conflict. The first thing any couple must realize is that men and women are created differently; we are wired differently, unless each takes the time to study the other party. If not there will always be conflicts, and one of the pillar of foundation of any relationship or marriage would have been overlooked, which is understanding one another. So many people are frustrated in their relationships. They love their partners but there is tension they do not know what to do to make things better. Through understanding how completely different men and women are, you will learn new ways for successfully relating with, listening to, and supporting the other person. You will learn how to create the love you truly deserve.

    Thought of the week:

Men are motivated when they feel needed while women are motivated when they feel cherished. This is one of the best ways how a man can overcome the need to be resistant to giving love, while women must overcome their resistance to receiving it.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) at the weekend issued an Air Operators’ Certificate (AOC) to West Link Airlines, for general aviation and scheduled operations.

The issuance of the AOC is a follow up to the airlines’ meeting the prescribed requirements by the NCAA, under the new Nigeria Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP), which became effective last month.

West Link Airlines is among the new airlines to be granted AOC by the NCAA under a stricter regulatory regime rolled out by the authority.

Presenting the AOC to the Chairman of West Link Airlines, Captain Ibrahim Mshelia, the Director of Airworthiness Standards, NCAA, Mr. Benedict Adeyileka, an engineer, hailed the management of the airlines for waiting for the documents, whose processing began in 2010.

He urged the airlines’ team to ensure that the standard of safety does not fall below expectation and to maintain good safety records at all times.

According to him, the entrance of West Link Airlines into the Nigerian aviation industry has opened way for other airlines operators to apply for AOCs.

The director said NCAA was behind the airlines. He said the rules and regulations guiding the airlines operations must be adhered to.

Mshelia said his ambition to establish West Link Airlines began in 1999, but it was halted because of the Jos crisis in 2001 as the airlines would have started operations from Jos.

    -Princess’ Thought of the Week!

“The key to a happy marriage for any woman is to be able to cook a great meal, and a great sex life with her spouse. Understanding each other, emotionally, physically, and most importantly to some people, spiritually is the basis to a successful and happy marriage.”

Question: Is it possible to recycle or rebrand a woman? – Tomiwa, Ibadan.

Answer: Yes, it is possible to recycle or even rebrand a woman. To rebrand means to create a differentiated identity in the mind of others. A radical change to ones looks or image such that you create a new identity for yourself. An example is when a 40 year old woman looks 30. This can be accomplished if the woman is aware of the way she looks, by watching her weight, eating a well balanced diet, exercising daily, and paying attention to her general well being. By that, she will continue to look younger than her age and radiant. Another important thing to stay away from is stress. Stress, as we know, can cause a whole lot of medical problems, like high blood pressure which can eventually lead to stroke. But the first thing that stress does to one is that it fasten the ageing process, wherein a 30 year old looks like a 40 year old. So, it is very important to know your stressor and try as much as possible to reduce it. Maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle is the most important ingredient to youthfulness.

Question: How does a woman keep her marriage so that a younger or another woman for that matter does not steal her spouse? – Seyi, Ajah.

Answer: The question of keeping ones marriage is simple, but at the same time, also complex. Simple in the sense that if there is love, understanding, and an effective communication on both sides, the marriage will succeed. If your husband marries you when your dress size was 20 and now you try to shed that weight, chances are he likes big women, and that might create a problem in the marriage. The complexity will come in when love fades, understanding is lost, and most essentially the chain of communication breaks. Make sure you keep the fire lit in your relationship with your husband, go back to when you first started dating and see what attracted him to you, vice versa, and see if the same natural charm can still work.

Question: Princess, when does a woman stop having sexual urge in a marriage? – Yinka, Ikeja.

Answer: Sexual urge by itself differs for both men and women. A friend once told me “My husband’s infidelity is so uncontrollable that I can’t even imagine him touching me any longer”. One of her fears is STD (Sexual Transmitted Disease, e.g. HIV). Another reason was because she felt her husband no longer loves her. So, it requires an internal soul search to find out if the reason for decrease in sexual urge in your marriage is physically or emotionally or even both. Without sexual urge, there is no lovemaking. Lovemaking can be tested in marriage. Meaning, sex itself in marriage is a seal of oneness. A woman especially needs to be careful not to break that seal in order not to break her marriage. It should be no surprise that couples may experience problem that showed up in the bedroom. If sex is not working in your marriage, I will suggest looking below the surface. It may be a result of deeper issues that need to be addressed and resolved before sexual intimacy can improve. Also, things over time, such as job security, children, finances, and age might be contributing factors. Take a look and see how any one of this factor is affecting sexual urge. Ordinarily, just as men are well able to make love way into their 90s, most women also enjoy sex into their 70s and beyond.

Boko Haram issues threat in new video

A VIDEO of a French family of seven kidnapped last month in Cameroon and which also purported to show the acclaimed leader Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, was yesterday obtained by AFP.

The AFP had earlier in the week reported the audio clips.

In the video, Shekau and the seven French hostages were not together in the same location.

Shekau, who spoke in Arabic in the nearly 11-minute video, said the French tourists were abducted because of the arrest of Boko Haram members and their family members in Nigeria and Cameroon.

The screen is split during part of the time he speaks, with one half showing him and the other a photograph of the family.

“God sent us the French hostages …,” he said in what Shekau described as a message to the presidents of Nigeria, Cameroon and France.

“The proof that we are holding them is that our brothers and sisters were captured in Nigeria and Cameroon … We seek no money but the release of our brothers.”

The father of the French family, which includes four children, the couple and an uncle, later reads a statement from a piece of paper.

He is surrounded by his children, his wife and his brother, all seven standing in front of what appears to be a tarpaulin.

A source close to the family on Monday confirmed that the man speaking was indeed the father, Tanguy Moulin-Fournier.

The family were on holiday in the region around Cameroon’s WazaNational Park when they were kidnapped on February 19.

The father says in the video that they were kidnapped 25 days ago.

Cameroon has said the victims were taken over the border into restive northeastern Nigeria after their abduction, though their precise whereabouts are unknown.

Boko Haram is believed to include a number of factions with various interests and shifting demands.

The group has in the past called for the creation of an Islamic state in Nigeria.

Violence linked to the group’s insurgency in northern and central Nigeria, including killings by the security forces, has left some 3,000 people dead since 2009.

  • Brunt: No issues with Osaze

    Brunt: No issues with Osaze

West Bromwich Albion captain Chris Brunt is backing Super Eagles ace, Osaze Peter Odemwingie to bounce from his QPR transfer fiasco.

Brunt insists there are “no issues” with Odemwingie, providing he shows the right attitude in his approach to training and playing.

“There are no issues. Football is football,” Brunt said. “As long as everyone is doing their job then nothing that has gone on before will be an issue.

“Since Peter Odemwingie came back, he’s got his head down and got on with it. We’ve seen in the past what he can do on the pitch and how good he can be.

“It’s up to the gaffer what team he picks but we need all the players we can get. We don’t have a massive squad and Peter is a good player so I’m sure he will play a part for us.

“As long as everyone gives 100 per cent during training and on the pitch, then there are no complaints.”
