Italy commemorates 79th anniversary, reaffirms strong bilateral ties with Nigeria

The Acting Ambassador of Italy to Nigeria, Mr. Iacopo Foti, has hailed Nigeria as a land of remarkable diversity, vibrant energy, and immense potential.

He made the remarks during the celebration of the 79th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Republic, la Festa della Repubblica  held  in Abuja.

In his address, Ambassador Foti commended Italians living in Nigeria for their industrious spirit and cultural diplomacy.

“To my fellow Italians, you are ambassadors of our culture, values, and hardworking spirit. Your dedication and integration into Nigerian society are a source of national pride,” he said. “As I always like to say, like Nigerians do to all the Italians in Nigeria: ‘Well done.’”

The ambassador highlighted the impact of the Italian community in Nigeria, noting their contributions in sectors such as food, construction, fashion, design, and technology.

“You have brought to Nigeria Italian food products, marbles, fashion, and advanced technology. You have built, manufactured, and contributed meaningfully to the country’s development since before independence,” he said.

Foti however expressed optimism about the future of Italy-Nigeria relations.

“There is so much more we can achieve together. We aim to deepen our economic ties, scientific collaboration, and cultural and academic exchanges.”

He noted that while Nigeria has the potential to be a cultural superpower through its rich arts, literature, and film, Italy, a longstanding global cultural leader  is increasingly engaging with Africa.

“We recognise Nigeria’s strong interest in Italian culture from fashion to cinema. Italy is home to the third-largest Nigerian diaspora after the U.S. and U.K. Italians appreciate Nigeria’s vibrant and diverse cultural heritage shaped by its many ethnic and religious groups,” he added.

Foti also expressed gratitude to Nigerian authorities for their support and for joining in the national celebration, describing it as a testament to the strength of the countries’ bilateral relationship.

“Your commitment to fostering this friendship is deeply appreciated. Let us reaffirm our dedication to working together for a brighter future,” he said.

He emphasised that both countries continue to collaborate on global challenges including climate change, migration, peace, and security.

He noted that both Italy and Nigeria are signatories to the Paris Agreement and are active in discussions on human trafficking and diaspora engagement.
