  • itel, Lagos Food Bank worried over Nigeria’s extreme poverty

Just recently, Nigeria, overtook India as the country with the largest number of people living in extreme poverty, with an estimated 87 million Nigerians, or around half of the country’s population, thought to be living on less than $1.90 a day.

The findings, based on a projection by the World Poverty Clock and compiled by Brookings Institute, show that more than 643 million people across the world live in extreme poverty, with Africans accounting for about two-third of the total number.

In Nigeria, as with other countries on the continent, that figure is projected to rise. “By the end of 2018 in Africa as a whole, there will probably be about 3.2 million more people living in extreme poverty than there are today,” the researchers stated.

Perturbed by this sad reality, Africa’s mobile phone giant, itel Mobile, in partnership with Lagos Food Bank took a poverty amelioration Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to give back to the residents, particularly school-aged children of Agboyi-Ketu community, a Lagos suburb.

In a statement, itel said the hunger prevention initiative of feeding Nigerians is part of its commitment to building a better world by aligning its consumers and products to help eliminate hunger through its CSR program, adding that “itel always love on campaign.”

During the visit, itel gave out to the community residents- school-aged children, products such as school bags, food items, clothes, books, writing materials, as well as sensitising the community through skilled volunteers.

According to Marvin Umbeiye, itel’s Marketing Manager, itel demonstrated its concern for the community by offering its best resources to keep the momentum of giving going.

Umbeiye said: “I am very proud to be part of a brand whose priority is giving back to the communities where we live and work. The joy our CSR activities give the families, make me positive that Itel will continue to improve livelihoods, until the Nigeria we crave for is achieved. We are very hopeful for a brighter and more sustainable future.”
