  • Four-hour power cut at Itire, Ilasamaja, others tomorrow

THE Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)  yesterday said there would be a four-hour power outage at the Itire 132KV Transmission Sub-Station in  tomorrow because of ‘’routine maintenance’’ of its equipment.

Its General Manager (Public Affairs), Mrs Ndidi Mbah,  said, in a statement that the maintenance was necessary for the sub-station to maintain effective supply of electricity to the affected areas.

It explained that the  maintenance would disrupt 34 megawatts of electricity supply to customers around Ago, Okota, Ilasamaja, Ijesha, Itire and environs.

Mrs Mbah said: “The planned outage will enable TCN engineers from the Akangba sub-regional office in Surulere to carry out routine maintenance work on all the equipment at its Itire Transmission Sub-Station.

“The maintenance will also cover a 132KV insulated indoor switchyard for improved electricity supply to customers in the above-mentioned areas.

“TCN, therefore, appeals to customers that take supply from distribution load centres covering the areas mentioned above, to bear with it for four hours on Tuesday, March 27.

“The management of TCN apologises for the inconveniences that may result from the temporary disruption of supply to customers within the affected areas.

“TCN promises to continue upgrading and maintaining its equipment to serve Nigerians better, in line with the Federal Government’s strategy on incremental power supply to the people.’’

  • Itire has been in total black out since October 2017

We write in haste to intimate you of the plight of our community development association in the hands of your business manager in Ojo Business District, concerning our repeated demand for a Back-up transformer A 500 KVA 11/0415 KVA transformer.

Our letter, dated 3rd July, 2014, to the office of the Chief Executive\Officer (CEO) and acknowledged received  on 9th July 2014 (copy attached) complained about the distribution of (8) eight transformer infrastructure distribution of electricity. These are located on the other side of Ilogbo road to supply electricity to the following streets, Muniru Street, Alateowo Street, Ajayi Street, Olusegun Street, Ikale Ewa Street, Debo Close, Ajoke Street, Adeyemo Street and Y.S Street sketch of location of Transformer Distributing Power on Ilogbo Road (Tope / Itire Axis) Attached.

Whereas the other divide of Ilogbo road consisted of Joseph Babatunde Street, Ifebajo Street, Agbo – Nla Close, Ayeni Street., Sunray Close, Diegbeha Extension, Diegbeha Close and Wedluck Avenue, make use of one leg of transformer on Ilogbo road (Which was the first transformer installed in 1988 to serve the entire Ilogbo community) to distribute electricity in the whole eight (8) streets consisting of 141 houses in this axis.

Our community has since provided platform at a location for the proposed transformer supervised and certified by PHCN.

It is obvious that there is no fair distribution of transformer infrastructure to our community, hence the epileptic supply of power and regular trip-off of power continue unabated. And our request to EKCD for allocation of a back-up 500 KVA transformer for equitable distribution of power supply in our community remains unattended to. Our community has never enjoyed electricity up to six hundred minutes (10 hours) in a month.

The existing transformer we were told is not overloaded but the feeder needs balancing because one unit is serving about 141 (one hundred and forty one) houses in our community, while three feeder serve  twelve, another twenty eight houses and one hotel respectively which is on a unit. It has become increasingly embarrassing for the community comprising of 141 (one hundred and forty one)  buildings calling up your men at Ajangbadi Undertaking at least three times in a week to report rapture of fuse or jumper as a result of their overloaded unit.

On the 22nd May, 2017 President of Joint Youth Congress (Ojo Local Government) was invited to the stakehoder’s meeting held by EKEDC at Elite Events centre, Iba,  Lagos and he complained about the plight of our CDA. Since then nothing concrete has been done and your men carried ladder daily to harass our community people who are majorly made to pay high, unjustified estimated bills using the functional transformer on the others side to prepare bills for the epileptic energy supplied us. This was not acceptable by our community.

Our community had been in total black out since October 2017 despite our repeated demand for a relief transformer since 2014.

At this junction, your immediate and urgent intervention is required to calm the frayed nerves of our teeming youth and grant our request for a 500 kva 11/0.415 transformer with a provision for pre-paid meters. This will give a lasting and reliable resolution to the supply of electrical energy and revive economic activities in our community development association.”

Detainee’s death sparks protest in Itire

How did Nurudeen Aliyu die in the   custody of Itire Police Station? This is the puzzle his friends are asking the Inspector-General of Police (ICP) to unravel.

Aliyu was arrested last Tuesday for fighting and detained at the station where he died on Friday.

Aliyu who lives at 40, Aborisade Street, Lawanson, was allegedly beaten up by an Inspector before he was detained.

A friend, Ettu, said Aliyu was killed and his body was taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) mortuary to cover up the case.

He accused the police of extrajudicial killings in the area, recalling a similar incident that occurred last year.

Ettu said: “The  Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Itire Police Station should know that you can’t cover this one up. Last year at this same police station, an Inspector  killed a secondary school pupil and a young guy around Oduduwa in Surulere.

“This policeman is still in service as we speak. The annoying thing is that I saw this inspector three weeks after the incident. He has been posted to Agege Police Station.

“I call on well-meaning Nigerians to reach out to the inspector and ask him why his men killed Nurudeen.”

Lagos command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed Aliyu’s death, describing him as a habitual criminal.

She said: “The suspect is a habitual criminal. He was alleged to have removed two people’s eyes through his usual attack on innocent people.

“Last Tuesday, there was a distress call that he’s attacking some people again. The police arrested him and detained him to be charged to court but while in detention he vomited and complained of body ache. He was rushed to the hospital where the doctor on duty certified him dead.”

  • Save Itire from Eko Disco

SIR: The hardship deliberately imposed on the residents and legal business operators in Itire community by Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKDC) is becoming highly unbearable. The community is situated in Mushin Local Council Area of Lagos. EKDC, citing unsubstantiated attack on its staff, completely cut-off electricity supply to the area mid-November. Consequently, socio-economic activities have been brought to a standstill.

EKDC habitually imposes outrageous and estimated bills on the electricity consumers. Its staff, without any prior notice, also engages in indiscriminate and most times illegal disconnection of households and business premises even those with pre-paid metres. Most attempts by some leaders of thoughts from the affected community to dialogue with the management of the company in resolving the bill issue hit the rock.

However, an unidentified staff of EKDC publicly assured that electricity would be restored to the community on Monday, December 7. The assurance came after a peaceful protest by some of the residents and business owners at the company’s premises at Lekki. Silverbird Television (STV), last week, aptly captured the protest and EKDC’s assurance during its primetime news bulletin.

The yuletide is here and EKDC is yet to fulfill its promise. There are speculations that the company has deferred electricity restoration to the area to January, next year. This unconfirmed but shocking decision has evidently increased the hardship suffered by the consumers. The people are also contending with the unbearable noise and air pollution from power generating sets.
