Iwobi lauds Eagles’  team spirit ahead of semi-final test

Alex Iwobi has  hailed coach Eric Chelle for creating a team spirit which has taken the Super Eagles to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations only two months after their dreams of World Cup qualification were ended in agonising fashion.

The Nigerians take on AFCON hosts Morocco in Rabat tonight, looking to continue the prolific form which has carried them to the last four.

They reached the final of the last Cup of Nations two years ago in Cote d’Ivoire before losing to the hosts, while Iwobi also played in the side that reached the semi-finals in 2019.

But he said a happier environment off the pitch – despite reports of rows with the national football federation over bonuses – was now helping bring out the very best in him and a team in its prime.

“I feel like the difference is the sense of brotherhood, the family environment that we have created for each other,” the 29-year-old Fulham star said at a packed press conference in the Moroccan capital.

“Of course, at previous AFCONs we have done really well. The team was so strong, but at the same time, we were young, and we were learning about each other.

“I feel like right now everybody is entering their prime, everyone is doing well for their clubs, and you can see the joy and the chemistry we have when playing for our country.

“It is not just on the pitch, also off the pitch, there is a big unity, we are a big family. It starts from the coach – he has brought that brotherhood.”

Nigeria limped through their qualifying campaign for the World Cup and saw their dreams of making it to the finals go up in smoke with a play-off defeat on penalties against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rabat in November.

“We have always given 100 per cent,” insisted Iwobi.

“In the World Cup qualifiers, we wanted to win as well, but it was a difficult moment for us, and we have used that disappointment as motivation to go and achieve something for our country, for ourselves, for our families.”

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has hailed Coach Eric Chelle for fostering a strong team spirit among the Super Eagles, which has propelled them to the AFCON semi-finals.

Iwobi, at a packed press conference in the Moroccan capital, highlighted the sense of brotherhood and family environment as key factors in their success.

The 29-year-old Fulham star stated that the team’s current prime, combined with the unity and chemistry among players, is driving their impressive performance.

“I feel like the difference is the sense of brotherhood, the family environment that we have created for each other.

“Of course, at previous AFCONs, we have done really well. The team was so strong, but at the same time, we were young, and we were learning about each other.

“I feel like right now everybody is entering their prime, everyone is doing well for their clubs, and you can see the joy and the chemistry we have when playing for our country.

“It is not just on the pitch, but also off the pitch, there is a big unity, we are a big family.”

Iwobi praised Chelle for creating this positive atmosphere, saying, “It starts from the coach; he has brought that brotherhood.”

The Super Eagles are set to face Morocco in the semi-finals, aiming to build on their prolific form and reach the final.

Fulham lose to Newcastle as Iwobi marks 300 appearances in EPL

Fulham lost to Newcastle at the St. James Park in the English Premier League.

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes scored a dramatic late winner as Fulham’s losing run continued at St James’ Park.

It looked like Newcastle were going to have to settle for a share of the spoils against injury-hit Fulham.

But in the 90th minute Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno could only parry substitute William Osula’s shot into the path of Guimaraes and the midfielder took full advantage to fire home from close range.

Nigerian international and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi also marked his 300th game in the English Premier League in the game.

The 29-year-old played 100 games for Arsenal, 123 games for Everton and 77 games for Fulham becoming the fifth African player to mark the achievement.

Defender Semi Ajayi, who missed the last two matches in the September window due to injury, returns to the group, as do France-based Terem Moffi and former junior international Olakunle Olusegun, who plays his club football in Russia.

  • Nigeria  vs. Gabon Iwobi ready to face ‘big brother’ Aubameyang

Nigeria  vs. Gabon Iwobi ready to face ‘big brother’ Aubameyang

Alex Iwobi says Nigeria’s efforts to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been “resurrected from the dead” following an ominously poor start that saw the Super Eagles take just three points from their first four qualifiers.

A campaign that involved home draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, three different coaches and several injuries to talismanic striker Victor Osimhen eventually ended in salvation thanks to an injury-time goal in their final group game against Benin.

That strike by Brentford’s Frank Onyeka gave the West Africans a 4-0 victory that saw them sneak into the African play-offs on goal difference as runners up in Group C.

But Nigeria face a new challenge tomorrow  – how to stop Iwobi’s former Arsenal team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when they meet Gabon in their play-off semi-final  in Morocco.

“He’s getting on, but you wouldn’t think that. He’s a youthful guy,” Iwobi told BBC Sport Africa when discussing the 36-year-old Gabon skipper. “I don’t know how we’re going to lock him up.”

Aubameyang has already bagged seven goals in World Cup qualifying, including four in one game against The Gambia, as Gabon finished a point behind holders Ivory Coast in their group.

And the Marseille striker will be motivated by the possibility of leading his nation to the World Cup for the first time.

Iwobi, who played alongside Aubameyang for the Gunners during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, added: “We both have the same goal and we both respect that, but he’s such a great person off the pitch as well.”

“I was his little brother. He was taking care of me. He used to talk to me, have banter, just make sure I feel comfortable.

“On the pitch, he always said to me, ‘Alex, just express yourself, be you’.

“He’s a very, very happy guy. His aura and his charisma are just amazing. He’s always playing with a smile on his face.”

After missing out on top spot to South Africa in Group C, which would have guaranteed automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, Nigeria now face a difficult path to reach the finals.

They must beat Gabon and then the winner of Thursday’s other play-off between Cameroon and DR Congo  to progress to an intercontinental qualifier which will be held in March.

Should Nigeria reach that stage, their world ranking should see them play one match against an opponent from  Asia, Oceania, South America or the Concacaf (North, Central America and Caribbean) region.

The winners will then take their place at the expanded 48-team tournament.

After Nigeria missed out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Iwobi is keen to return to the international game’s biggest stage.

“Giving ourselves another chance to go into the World Cup, the confidence is high,” said the 29-year-old.”I’ve been in one [Russia 2018], I would like to be in one again.

“Hopefully we get the chance to do that. It’s not going to be easy. We’ve got to play Gabon first and I’m sure he (Aubameyang) wants to go to the World Cup as well.”

Eric Chelle was tasked with delivering World Cup qualification when he was appointed as Nigeria boss at the start of this year

The man who has resurrected Nigeria’s World Cup dream is Eric Chelle.

The Malian became the first non-Nigerian African to take charge of the Super Eagles when he was appointed in January.

He has gone unbeaten in six competitive games, with four wins and two draws, and Iwobi says the 48-year-old has installed a positive atmosphere among the squad.

“Our manager constantly reminds us that we’re able to push through all circumstances,” explained the Fulham midfielder.

“He’s such a great man. We almost don’t see him as like a manager, but like a big brother. He’s created a big brotherhood.

“You see him on the touchline. He gets heated – he’s literally trying to fight for us.

“It motivates us, that we want to play not just for Nigeria but for him as well.”

Iwobi also had a message for fans who have been unhappy with the team’s qualifying campaign up until now.

“It wasn’t the greatest of starts,” he acknowledged with knowing understatement.

“But they (the fans) also need to understand we all have the same goal.

“I understand when they’re disappointed because we are very disappointed in not winning games comfortably or winning against teams that maybe we should have.

“We feel like on any day, if we give 100%, and we’ve got the players to do so, that we can beat any team.

“But there’s one thing saying it, we have to prove it.”

  • Iwobi tipped to shine for Fulham against Aston Villa

Iwobi tipped to shine for Fulham against Aston Villa

The international break brought an unexpected headache for Fulham with Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey part of the Nigeria squad left stranded overnight in a Libyan airport, forced to sleep on hard floors and plastic chairs without any access to food or water.

The club will hope the duo are able to shrug off the ordeal swiftly as they prepare for today’s meeting with Aston Villa at Craven Cottage. Iwobi, in particular, is a player they have come to rely on.

The 28-year-old’s Premier League record is modest in terms of goals and assists, with a combined total of only 26 in 160 games since leaving boyhood club Arsenal. But his value to Fulham, following his arrival from Everton last year, has been abundantly clear this term.

Having covered several positions last season, operating across the front line and even in midfield, he has mainly been used on the left this time around. His versatility remains an asset – he filled in at right wing-back in the narrow defeat to Manchester City before the break – but the greater stability has helped.

Iwobi has dovetailed effectively with Emile Smith Rowe and Antonee Robinson on Fulham’s left and, with licence to drift infield, the quality of his passing has stood out more than ever.

Iwobi ranks top in the division for open-play passes into the box and fifth for open-play chances created. He is only slightly lower for open-play expected assists and shot-creating actions. His total of 62 progressive passes puts him 14th  overall but top among wingers.

His creativity has been key in Fulham’s bright start to the campaign and his numbers put him in esteemed company this season. Consider the fact that, across Europe’s major leagues, the only player with more open-play passes into the box is the Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal.

Nigerian stars Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were instrumental as Fulham recorded a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United.

The win was Fulham’s first against Newcastle since 2017, ending a long winless streak against the Magpies.

Fulham’s attacking play was fluid, with Raul Jimenez opening the scoring in the fifth minute.

Iwobi, who joined Fulham from Everton in 2023, combined brilliantly with fellow Hale End Academy graduate Emile Smith-Rowe to score Fulham’s second goal with a composed finish in the 22nd minute, giving the hosts a comfortable lead at the break.

When quizzed to describe his goal against Leicester City, the former Everton and Arsenal player said the strike came off consistent practice in training sessions and was thrilled he has the chance to convert it last Saturday.

“We were proud of our performance against Manchester United but we didn’t get what we wanted and it was only right we got our first three points of the season before our fans.

“It was something we worked on in training and when the right back went on that amazing run I just had to make sure I stayed on the line and luckily for me there was no one on my way until I got the goal.”

Iwobi seals win for Fulham over Leicester

Goals by Emile Smith Rowe and Alex Iwobi gave Fulham a 2-1 home victory over promoted Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Fulham deservedly took the lead in the 18th minute when Adama Traoré played a superb through ball to midfielder Smith Rowe, who marked his Craven Cottage debut with a clinical left-footed shot.

Fulham’s lead lasted only 20 minutes before center-back Wout Faes headed home from a Facundo Buonanotte corner to level it up for Leicester. Faes’ goal was initially disallowed for offside but was awarded following a VAR review.

Iwobi restored Fulham’s advantage in the 70th minute, however, as he beautifully controlled a long ball from left back Antonee Robinson before finishing with a left-foot shot to secure all three points for the hosts.

Fulham manager Marco Silva had named an unchanged side after their 1-0 loss at Manchester United last week, and they largely dominated against Steve Cooper’s side.

Fulham could have been ahead much earlier after Faes’ defensive error handed the ball to Traore, who moved it for Rodrigo Muniz, only for the Brazilian forward to send his shot over the bar.

Iwobi has prominently featured in the Premier League for the last nine years since he made his debut for Arsenal. He spent four seasons at the club until 2019 when he joined Everton.

The 27-year-old spent four seasons at Everton before leaving for Fulham last summer. And since he joined, he has been a regular for them. This season, Iwobi has made 26 appearances for the Cottagers, and the latest was against Crystal Palace which ensured that he totalled 250 appearances in the Premier League, surpassing Mikel, who he was tied with on 249.
